VIVA VALENTINO

Inspired by the historical concept of the

Grand Tour, which saw members of high society

exploring Europe to soak up the cultural sights

and sounds, the spring/summer collection

from Valentino references the icons of Italy.

The intricate forms of the country’s historic

architecture are refected in bold forals, while

draped gowns are reminiscent of Roman dress.

Coastal Italy fnds expression in motifs of

starfsh, shells, ships and underwater creatures,

with a seaside theme working comfortably on

formal attire and casualwear. The design team

at Valentino has mastered modern femininity,

and the skill behind this collection lies in the

freshness it creates out of such traditional

inspirations. No summer wardrobe is complete

Milan often attracts attention thanks to its status as an international fashion centre and as Italy’s commercial heart, and for six months from 1 May the world’s gaze will be very frmly fxed on the city as it hosts Expo Milano 2015, a series of varied events and shows.

The exhibition site stretches for three kilometres and 144 countries will take part; 20 million visitors are expected to visit the city, many travelling on Expo-themed aeroplanes. With these kinds of numbers involved, it is unsurprising that Expo Milan 2015 will dominate daily life in Milan throughout the spring and summer.

MODERN

MASTERSItaly’s designers are turning to traditional

artisan techniques to impress today’s clients,Harriet Quick discovers

‘I started making sandals for myself, taking remnants of crocodile skins to small sandal makers in Positano. I also used crocodile tails, which can’t be easily made into bags, for belts. One summer, the Mr Porter team came to dinner at our home in Florence and asked me to produce the belts and sandals for them, so the line was born,’ says designer Álvaro González.

He, along with other designers living and working in Italy, is creating niche collections and bringing on board skilled artisans, small businesses and traditional ateliers. Marco de Vincenzo is a womenswear designer who skillfully combines traditional approaches

and modern technology to create sensational, deeply tactile clothes. Meanwhile, Carlotta Danti is a lingerie specialist. Milan-born Danti cut her teeth at Vivienne Westwood in London before returning to her home city to launch her lingerie and boudoir wear under the label Rosamosario. All three designers display impeccable taste and share a passion for the unique and for craftsmanship.

Behind these labels lies a wealth of experience. González is an accessories pioneer who, for the past 20 years, has been designing for labels including Jimmy Choo and Loro Piana; as well as running his own label, he is now also the creative director of luxury label

DREAM WEAVERS

For those in the know, one country excels when it comes to making fabric. Italian textile production, mainly focused in the north of the country and along the Amalf coast, stretches back hundreds of years. Age-old skills and commitment to perfection have been maintained, which is why Italian textiles have become synonymous with unrivalled quality.

For example, the linen bed sheets, towels and table coverings that grace some of the world’s fnest hotels and smartest private residences are crafted by a handful of highly regarded, and sometimes secretive, Italian companies.

Frette is one of the best examples of traditional Italian linen production. Founded in 1860, the company was originally based in Grenoble, at the foot of the French Alps. After moving to Monza, an industrial town near Milan, the company was exposed to the exacting standards of Italian linen production

Italy’s reputation for producing the world’s fnest textiles is well deserved. Ruairidh Pritchard picks out some of the leading names

and by the start of the 20th century it was producing some of the fnest linens available.

Still based in Monza, Frette has maintained its reputation, which is largely attributed to its patented and rather secretive method of textile bleaching which, according to the company, results in the white, soft and shiny fnish of its linens. Guests at the Ritz in Paris, Claridge’s in London and the Plaza in New York sleep between Frette sheets, while diners on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will be seated in front of the company’s table linen. Frette also supplies royal families across the globe.

Frette’s exquisite linens, as well as its range of sleepwear and interiors fabrics, can also be bought in its boutiques. This season the collection is inspired by countries and islands such as South Africa, Argentina and Bali, resulting in the use of elaborate motifs, crochet and lace in a vibrant mix of watercolour shades.

A similar trajectory has taken place at Sferra. The company was founded in 1891

of the fnal piece of cloth. Sferra continues to be held in high esteem and its linens have been chosen for numerous important residences and buildings, including the White House and the Vatican.

Linen isn’t the only highly coveted material being produced in Italy, as acclaimed label Loro Piana can attest. For decades the brand has been manufacturing some of the world’s most sought-after fabrics and creating collections of knitwear, shirts and jackets with sumptuous linings that have become wardrobe essentials for well-dressed people around the globe.

Loro Piana also produces a range of sumptuous interiors fabrics: its cashmere is available in more than 30 shades and can be combined with coloured suede to create

by Gennaro Sferra, one of Venice’s most talented lace craftsmen, and its linens became popular in the early 20th century among American industrialists with discerning tastes. This success in the US led to Sferra setting up a shop on New York’s Fifth Avenue, but Gennaro Sferra always ensured he returned to Venice twice a year by steamer to create new collections of handmade lace and luxury linens.

Sferra has updated its production methods, investing in state-of-the-art technology to spin, dye and fnish each yarn to precise specifcations and stringent standards. Even so, the four key elements prioritised by Gennaro Sferra 120 years ago remain central: the fbres used, the weight of the fabric, the fnish and, perhaps most importantly, the luxurious feel

TABLE TALKWhether classic alla Milanese or

a version featuring unconventional

favour combinations, risotto

is still Milan’s main dish.

Isabella Redmond Styles tastes

a selection from around the city

Risotto is a Milanese favourite for good

reason. The dish is said to have originated in

the city, the result of the region’s tradition of

slow cooking and infuences from Spanish

cuisine. It’s a staple in many restaurants due

to its versatility and popularity with customers.

The most typical incarnation is risotto alla

Milanese, a simple yet sublime dish which uses

safron for its distinctive yellow hue and subtle

favour. This is generally served alongside

osso buco – slow-cooked veal – another of the

region’s renowned dishes. Risotto also works

well with seasonal ingredients: come spring,

risotto primavera, made with fresh green

vegetables, is the order of the day, while in the

summer look out for strawberry risotto (risotto

alla fragole), an intriguing mix of sweet and

savoury favours. Autumnal root vegetables

are also classic risotto ingredients and, as a

result, pumpkin and mushroom are favourite

favours once the weather cools.

True risotto lovers should be sure to make

a reservation at this aptly named trattoria.

So called because of its menu of 23 risottos,

the restaurant opened in 1979 and has a

well-deserved Michelin star for its diferent

versions of the classic Italian dish. Whether

it’s a perfectly made risotto alla Milanese, a

gloriously simple yet decadent trufe version

or something more adventurous, the wide-

ranging menu doesn’t disappoint.

SABBADINI

Sabbadini’s exquisite jewellery has been

turning heads since the boutique was

opened by Bruno Sabbadini in 1940. Since

then, Bruno’s son Alberto and grandson

Pierandrea have joined the business, opening

a showroom in New York as well as the

elegant Via Montenapoleone fagship store in

Milan. The playful yet classic bee brooch is

Sabbadini’s best-known piece, and is covered

in a choice of precious and semi-precious

stones with diamonds; it is also available as a

bracelet or necklace.

VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO

In the heat of the summer, Villa Necchi

Campiglio is the perfect place to visit. Built

in the 1930s by Milanese architect Piero

Portaluppi, the villa has a very inviting

swimming pool in addition to a tennis court

and beautiful grounds. Inside, visitors can

fnd an interesting selection of artefacts,

including 18th-century paintings and

decorative items, and artist Claudia Gian

Ferrari’s collection of early 20th-century art.

Villa Necchi Campiglio,

Via Mozart 14, 20122 Milan,

ATOS LOMBARDINI

Given its Italian heritage, it’s appropriate

that Atos Lombardini’s spring/summer

2015 collection has been inspired by the

Mediterranean sea. This translates into chic

monochrome separates including jackets,

shorts and loose-ftting trousers as well as

clever embellishment in the form of crystals

and tassels. Metallic accents and geometric

prints, in keeping with vintage Moroccan

carpets, give the pieces a pleasant 1970s feel.

Corso Giacomo Matteotti 3, 20121 Milan,

MARCO BICEGO

A recent addition to the exclusive boutiques

on Via della Spiga, Marco Bicego’s fagship

store fts in perfectly. The Italian jewellery

designer is inspired by his Venetian roots,

and each piece of Bicego’s jewellery combines

artisan heritage with contemporary

style. This boutique showcases the Goa,

Marrakesh, Jaipur, Paradise, Seville and

Africa collections, which are all designed in

18-carat yellow gold. Also available alongside

these is the nature-inspired Lunaria range,

which features delicate, hand-engraved leaf-

shaped pieces of irregular sizes.

LES COPAINS

Les Copains is known for its chic and

contemporary approach to womenswear, an

attitude that’s perfectly in keeping with the

location of the brand’s new Italian fagship

store. At the Via della Spiga boutique, clients

can browse the label’s latest womenswear

and accessories collection. The store follows

a similar design concept to the brand’s Rome

shop: hanging racks feature Vienna straw

while the cream stone fooring and white

wood alcoves provide a setting that feels

warm and welcoming yet current.

62: Taste Of Success

Page 141: SHOP Milan SS15

143

70: Modern Masters

Именно особенными и являются эти новые дизайнеры.alvarogonzalez.co, marcodevincenzo.com, rosamosario.com

80: Dream Weavers
