1 Introduction
AESTUVER fire-protection boards are classified under the highest construction material class: non-combustible A1
4
2 Products
At its Calbe plant in Saxony-Anhalt,
Fermacell GmbH produces its
cement-bonded AESTUVER fire-
protection boards as well as its mois-
ture-resistant fermacell Powerpanel
HD and H2O panels. The production
process is fully automated.
Specially designed production methods
give AESTUVER fire-protection
boards a dense and uniform fibre
structure, which provides for great
strength.
The AESTUVER board matrix combines
micro-porous granules with long glass
fibres for high compressive and flexural
strength and abrasion resistance,
while also providing excellent water and
frost resistance. Since no combustible
components are used in the boards,
no toxic or visibility obscuring gases
are released in the event of a fire.
In 2013, some 20 million euros were
invested in the extension of the produc-
tion plant. With this extra capacity,
Fermacell GmbH can manufacture
high-quality special products while
also responding flexibly to the needs
of international customers.
The company offers fire-protection
and construction engineering solutions
tailor-made in close collaboration
with its customers. A team of experts
provides assistance right from the
product development stage, so the fin-
ished product or system incorporates
optimal fire safety features.

applications.
With their tried-and-tested fire-protection and moisture-
resistance properties, fermacell board materials are
an excellent product for industrial applications.
The fire-protection requirements, the geometry of the
construction elements, and the product-specific require-
ments of our industrial and OEM customers are factors
that decide on the shape, processing stage and packaging
of the used products.
Our own AESTUVER element workshop is equipped
with state-of-the-art machinery, so the board materials
can be cut to size and machined to suit each customer's
specifications.
4 Solutions and services
Mechanical board cutting
AESTUVER fire-protection boards are easily worked with wood working machines
AESTUVER fire-protection boards are first calibrated, and then the surface is ground to the required size
Even sharp-edged corners and edges can be produced using sawing, milling, routing and drilling tools
21
Production is however not limited to pre-cut boards.
Pre-fabricated fitting pieces and elements can also be
produced. The board materials are cut to size, calibrated
and put together, and then packed into packaging units
and labelled as specified by the customer, and finally
shipped. Pilot or indicative fire tests can also be carried
out as a first step of checking new fire safety concepts
for their reliability.
This is what the AESTUVER element workshop
offers you:
■■ Boards cut to size to meet your precise specifications
■■ Complex CNC machining
■■ Pre-fabricated fire-protection elements for all types
of applications
■■ Boreholes or cut openings
■■ Customer-specific order picking
■■ Pilot / Indicative fire tests
Large-scale production on CNC machines with guaranteed precision CNC centre for high-precision and fast processing
Duct elements and fitting pieces are assembled with high dimensional precision
Even complex elements, or elements consisting of small pieces can be easily produced

Storage and handling
AESTUVER fire-protection boards
are laid horizontally on pallets for
shipment. They should always be
stored horizontally on a flat surface.
If stored in an upright position, the
boards may suffer deformation or
damage to the edges.
Since the boards are frost and water
resistant, storage outdoors is no
problem, but adequate protection with
a waterproof cover should be provided.
Where boards are to receive a sub-
sequent surface finishing soiling of the
board surfaces should be prevented.
Fork lift trucks or pallet trucks can be
used for horizontal board handling.
Individual boards must always be
carried in an upright position. Tools,
such as board lifters or carriers,
make it easier to manually handle the
boards. If such tools are not available,
operatives should wear gloves.
Cutting to size and machining
AESTUVER fire-protection boards
are cut to size with a conventional
rail-mounted circular hand saws fitted
with a dust extractor, preferably an
immersion saw or stationary panel
saw.
High-precision and sharp-edged cuts
are best produced with hard-metal
faced saw blades with alternating
cutting edge configurations on the saw
teeth. Saw blades with a smaller
number of teeth produce less dust,
as does a slower saw speed.
Further refinements, such as curva-
tures, boreholes and profiled edges,
can be produced with a jig saw, sets
of drill bits or router cutters.
Stationary machines are primarily
CNC machining centres in which
high-precision and high-quality
fire-protection products can be made.
Hard-metal faced tools are the pre-
ferred option for cutting to size and
machining, as these ensure long tool
service lives and optimum results.
We recommend using a dust extractor,
which is common practice when
working board materials.
Fixing
Screws with cutters under the head
are recommended for fixing the
boards. Any commercially available
brand is suitable for connections
with resin-coated staples. Staple guns
should always be operated with
a depth limiter as specified by the
manufacturer to prevent surface

damage. Fixing sizes and spacing are
given in the corresponding data sheets.
Screws can be placed into the board top
or bottom face, and into the edge.
Surface quality
■■ Exposed side: fair-faced concrete
surface
■■ Rear side: ground or smooth,
partly slightly sanded
Surface finishing
For gluing and sealing joints and sur-
faces, we recommend using AESTUVER
installation mortar (major surface
damage) or fermacell Powerpanel
surface finish.
For surface finishing, the boards must
be dry and free from dust and grease.
Since the exposed side of AESTUVER
fire-protection boards is smooth, the
alkaline base does not require any
rendering for most surface finishing
treatments.
Surfaces that are to be coated or
painted should however be treated with
an adequate primer. Commercially
available dispersion, synthetic-resin
or acrylic based products can be used
for rendering, coating and painting.
For special applications, the board
surface may have to be impregnated
with alkali-resistant products.
It is generally advisable to check with
the manufacturer whether the coating
system is suitable.
AESTUVER fire-protection boards
used as fire-protection with high
aesthetic requirements, which are
permanently exposed to weathering,
should be provided with a surface
protection.
Gluing
We recommend using our AESTUVER
1300 fire-protection adhesive for gluing
boards together.
Disposal
AESTUVER fire-protection boards are
classified as a mineral construction
material. They do not contain any toxic
or groundwater polluting substances
and can therefore be disposed of as
building waste or household waste.
AESTUVER waste can be reconditioned
in special recycling plants for use as
an aggregate for various applications.
Waste disposal code (EAK):
170101 (concrete)
