CONCERT BY THE UNIVERSITY OF TH E PHILIPPINES

M em bers and guests o f the U n ive rs ity enjoyed a varied program m e o f classical and contem porary compositions and an in te resting selection o f F ilip in o m asterpieces at a concert on 20th M a y at C ity H a ll Concert H a ll.

T h is concert was presented fo r the U n ive rs ity by the v is itin g Cham ber M us ic G roup o f the Conservatory o f M us ic , U n iv e rs ity o f the Ph ilipp ines. T h e program m e featured the renowned S tring Q uarte t in Residence at the Conservatory, w h ich is composed o f M iss Celia Sucgang, f irs t v io lin is t; M rs . R iza lina E. Buenaventura, second v io lin is t ; M r . Celso Estrella, v io lis t; and M r. M a rtin ia n o Esguerra, ce llis t; and such d is tinguished

artists as M r . A u re lio Estanislao, ba ritone ; M rs . Andrea O. Veneracion,soprano; and M r. Regalado Jose, p ian ist. T h e y are a ll professors and ranking facu lty members o f the various m usic departm ents o f the U n ive rs ity o f the Philipp ines.

T h e Cham ber M us ic G roup came to H ong K o n g on a concert to u r o f Southeast Asia designed by the U n iv e rs ity o f the P h ilip p ines w ith the purpose o f fostering good w ill among un ivers ities in the region.

SUMMER COURSES

U n ite d College in co-operation w ith the W illia m s -in - H ong K o n g Program, is again o ffe ring a special sum m er school fo r teachers o f p rim a ry and secondary schools.

T h e course w ill inc lude intensive tra in in g in spoken E ng lish by means o f live oral d r ills and language laborato ry exercises. T h e facu lty w i l l be made up o f recent graduates o f W illia m s College, U n ited States. T he course w il l run from 22nd Ju ly to 25th August.

A sum m er art course w ill be given by the D epartm ent o f F ine A rts o f New Asia College w ith the purpose o f developing Chinese trad ition a l cu ltu re and p ro m otin g a rtis tic com m unica tion between the East and the W est.

△ Professor M a rk Perlm an, Chairm an o f the D epartm ent o f Econom ics at the U n ive rs ity o f P ittsbu rgh , was a guest o f the U n ive rs ity from 3rd to 9th M ay.

D u rin g his stay, Professor Perlman delivered a pu b lic lecture in tw o parts on “ T h e R e lationship o f D em ographic Change, P ub lic H ealth Investm ent, and Econom ic G ro w th " . He m et w ith V ice-C hance llo r C h o h -M in g L i on 4th M ay.

Professor Perlm an had taught at H arvard , C orne ll, H aw a ii and Johns H opk ins U n ivers ities before jo in ing the U n iv e rs ity o f P ittsbu rgh as a Professor o f Economics and H is to ry and Econom ics in H ea lth at its G raduate School o f P ub lic H ealth . Since 1965, he has been the Chairm an o f the D epa rtm en t o f Econom ics. H is many pub lica tions inc lude H u m a n Resources in the Ur ban Economy {1963) , He a l t h M a n p o w e r in a Developing Economy {1967) , and The Met hodology o f Economic Investment in Publ i c He a l t h Programs.

A t the in v ita tio n o f the U n ive rs ity , Professor L iu de livered a pu b lic lecture in M anda rin on "E m p e ro r Sung K ao T 's u n g " on 6th M ay, and another lecture in E ng lish on "T h e P o litica l C o nd ition o f Southern S ung" on 8th M ay, at New Asia College.

Professor L iu is an a u th o rity on the study o f the h is to ry o f the Sung D ynasty. H is m any pub lica tions inc lude "R e fo rm in Sung C h ina : W ang A n -S h ih and the R e fo rm P o lic ies" published in E ng lish in 1959, and “ O u-Y ang H s iu , an 11th C entu ry C onfuc ian is t ” pub lished in 1967.

Professor L iu is a m em ber o f the Sung Project cu rre n tly headed by Professor H e rbe rt Franke o f the U n ive rs ity o f M u n ich .

△ U n de r the jo in t sponsorship o f the U n ive rs ity 's E conom ic Research Centre and C hung C h i College, D r. M a rie C. Berger delivered a pu b lic lecture on "C u ltu ra l Obstacles to Econom ic D e ve lo pm e n t" on 27th M a y at N ew Asia College.

In Europe M r . Y oung v is ited the offices o f the In te r- U n ive rs ity C ounc il fo r H ighe r Education Overseas in Lond on and the G erm an Academ ic-Exchange Service in Bonn.

△ M r. Robert H .N . H o , M anager o f K u n g Sheu ng D a ily News, has been appointed a new m em ber o f the Board o f G overnors o f N ew Asia College. E ig h t o f the Board M em bers whose services were to te rm inate on 31st Ju ly have also been re-nom inated by th e ir respective nom ina ting bodies to serve on the board fo r a fu r th e r period o f three years.

A A research grant has been approved by the U n iv e rs ity fo r M r . L ia n g C h i-S en, L e c tu re r in G eography at C hung C h i College, to con tinue his research on ‘ ‘ U rban La nd -U se in H ong K o n g and K o w lo o n " . A fte r com ple tion o f research in the T s im -S h a -T s u i and C entra l D is tr ic ts an in tensive fie ld survey is now being carried out in K ow loon . I t is expected tha t the fie ld w o rk fo r the whole peninsula w ill he com pleted in late au tum n, 1968.

△ T h e Chinese L ite ra tu re D epartm ent o f New Asia College sponsored a lecture on 23rd M ay. M r. M ok H o -F e i, L e c tu re r o f the D epartm ent, was in v ited to speak on “ A Causerie on Ju L in W ai S h ih ".

On 21st M ay, a "B o w lin g E ve n in g " was he ld at the bo w ling centre o f the South China A th le tic Association. T h e second fun c tion was a launch p icn ic to Lam m a Is land on 29th M ay. M r . Cheung Y ok-luen , T rustee o f the College, prov ided tw o launches fo r the occasion when nearly one hundred staff m embers and th e ir fam ilies were present.

聯合書院商學及社會科學學院院長兼工商管理學�

系主任司徒新博士,應香港科學管理協會之邀,出任�

大專杯男子羽毛球比賽,由四月初起連續舉行至�

五月中旬始告結束,新亞書院代表除榮獲本年度冠軍。�

新亞書院敎職員聯誼會與該院學生會,近在荃灣�

聯合書院工商管理學系講師張健民先生,應香港�

新亞書院董事會經聘請工商日報經理何鴻毅先生�

爲該院新董事。又該院董事會有八位董事之任期,將�

於本年七月三十一日屆滿,業經各有關機構推舉其續�

任董事,爲期三年。�

崇基學院史地系講師梁蘄善先生,業經本大學同�

意,給予硏究補助金,俾其繼續從事「香港及九龍都�

市土地利出」之硏究計劃。關於尖沙咀及中環兩地區�

之調査工作,業已完竣,現方在九龍各地區進行硏�

究,詳細調査工作可望於今秋完成。�

聯合書院圖書館,最近獲得西德葛特思璧温泉鎮�

之德國硏究院,以若干德文圖書相贈,計有八十七�

種項目,共一百九十冊,其中包括有精選之參考書藉�

多本,如「Der Grosse

Duden」,「Das Fischer

Lexikon」,德國文學,歷史及戲劇等專集,又有漢�

堡版之歌德全集,德國現代戲劇作家布勒希德全集,�

曁字源學等書,此類書藉,將爲本大學學生進修德文�

參考之用。�

新亞書院硏究所,於五月九日舉行茶會,招待該�

所名譽硏究員,現任美國普林斯頓大學中國歷史講座�

敎授劉子健博士。劉敎授於席間,曾以其本人之經�

驗,談論從事學術硏究者所應具備之語文條件。新亞�

各學院開設暑期進修班�

本大學聯合書院,今夏又與美國威廉士大學合作,�

共同舉辦特別暑期英語進修班,以利本港中小學校敎�

師之進修。�

該班課程內容,包括有英語會話之練習,及語言實�

驗室之實習。所有課程,均由美國威廉士大學畢業�

生現在聯合書院任職者担任。上課時間由七月二十二�

起至八月廿五日止。�

本校新亞書院藝術學系,亦開辦暑期藝術班、其目�

的在發揚中國固有文化,及促進東西藝術之交流。�

該班所設科目計有:國畫、西洋畫、裝飾畫,書�

法、印畫、藝術設計及藝術欣賞等科,槪由該系敎師�

講授。凡有興趣於藝術者,均得於七月十一日至十七�

日期內,向該系報名參加。上課時間共歷五週,由七�

月十八日起至八月廿一日此。�

過去數年來,經參加該藝術班進修之學生,在小學�

校任藝術敎員者頗多,而中學生之準備入新亞書院藝�

術學系進修者,亦復不少。�

日本政府文部省獎學金�

日本駐港總領事函告本大學,謂日本教育當局業經�

同意,以日本政府「文部省獎學金」,獎助崇基學院�

學生余均灼君及余冠初君二人,於一九六八至六九年�

度,在日本東京大學日本語文學系,以外國學生之資�

格,進修大學本科課程。�

大學公開學術演講�

美國畢茨堡大學經濟學系主任柏爾文敎授(Prof.

Mark Perl

man)�,於五月三日至九日來港,爲本大�

學之嘉賓。柏氏留港期間,曾在本大學作公開學術演�

講,分兩階段演講「人口狀況之變化,公共衞生之建�

設,與經濟發展之關係」,並於五月四日拜訪大學校�

長李卓敏博士。�

柏爾文教接曾在哈佛,康尼爾,夏威夷及約翰士哈�

京斯各大學敎學,其後轉就畢茨堡大學經濟學及歷史�

學敎授,兼該校公共衞生硏究院之衞生經濟學敎授,�

并自一九六五年以來,卽任該大學經濟學系主任。柏�

氏著述豐富,計有:「城市經濟之人力來源」(一九�

六三年出版);「開發經濟之衞生事業人力」(一九六�

七年出版);及「公共衞生計劃中之經濟建設方法」�

等著作。�

柏爾文敎授常訪問海外各地,曾於一九六〇年參加�

公共衞生考察團訪問巴西,又於一九六二至六四年,�

參加醫務人力考察圑訪問台灣,並曾以富柏萊學者之�

身份,前往澳洲訪問。�

美國普林斯頓大學東方文化硏究兼歷史學敎授劉�

子健博士,於五月四日至十一日,到本港訪問,並担�

任本大學歷史科之校外考試委員。�

劉氏應本大學之邀請,於五月六日作公開學術演講�

,以國語講述「宋高宗其人其事」,又於五月八日,�

在新亞書院發表另一次演講,以英語講述「南宋政治�

情況」。�

劉敎授爲硏究宋史權威,著作豐富,計有:「王安�

石及其新政」之英文版一書,已於一九五九年刊行問�

世,及「十一世紀之儒家歐陽修」一書,則於一九六�

七年方告出版。�

劉氏對慕尼黑大學富倫克敎授(Prof. Herbert

菲律賓大學音樂學院之音樂團,於五月十八日至二�

十二日來港訪問。菲律賓大學此次派遣該團前往東南�

亞各地作旅行演奏,其目的在與該地區各大學建立良�

好之關係。�

五月二十日,該團爲本大學在大會堂舉行音樂會。�

學位考試及中期考試�

本大學於一九六八年五月十五日至二十二日,在新�

亞書院舉行一九六八年學位考試,考第一段及第二段�

之筆試,而理科實驗試,則分別在三成員學院之實驗�

室舉行。參加第一段考試之學生凡四七一人,參加第�
