OVER AMUZAMUZ is een internationaal muziekcentrum waar culturele, educa-tieve en wetenschappelijke activiteiten plaatsvinden. Het concert-programma van AMUZ wordt samengesteld op basis van de criteria van de Historically Informed Performance: vanuit een historisch-wetenschappelijke benadering wordt op een creatieve, vernieuwende én toegankelijke manier muziek van alle tijden, stijlen en culturen aan een breed publiek gepresenteerd. De muziek treedt daarbij geregeld in dialoog met andere kunstvormen. Die doelstelling wordt gerealiseerd in een historisch monument – de voormalige St.-Augustinuskerk – dat werd uitgerust met de infrastructuur van een volwaardige, moderne concertzaal en beschikt over een onovertroffen akoestiek. Ook ander onroerend erfgoed in de stad Antwerpen wordt geïntegreerd in de werking, meer bepaald tijdens het festival Laus Polyphoniae.

ABOUT AMUZAMUZ is an international music centre, hosting cultural, educational and research activities. The concert programme of AMUZ is inspired by the criteria of Historically Informed Performance: on the basis of a historically valid approach, music from all periods, styles and cultures is presented to a broad public in a creative, re-invigorating and acces-sible way. Often music also engages in a dialogue with the other arts. For the achievement of this broad aim AMUZ can take advantage of a baroque monument – the former church of St Augustine – a felicitous environment adapted with advanced technology so as to offer a modern concert hall that provides unsurpassed acoustics to boot. Furthermore, AMUZ integrates other historical buildings of the city of Antwerp as venues, more specifically during the events organized in the framework of the Flanders Festival-Antwerp.

Hana BlažíkováDe Tsjechische sopraan Hana Blažíková is frequent te gast op de Europese en Japanse concertpodia, waar ze samenwerkt met gere-nommeerde musici als Philippe Herreweghe, Masaaki Suzuki, Ton Koopman en Peter Kooij. Hana Blažíková voelt zich als een vis in het water in het renaissance- en barokrepertoire, maar blinkt eveneens uit in gregoriaanse en in middeleeuwse muziek. Ook romantische liederen en hedendaagse muziek zijn haar lang niet vreemd. Ze speelt gotische harp en zelfs basgitaar in de rockband Stillknox en maakt deel uit van het Tiburtina Ensemble en Cappella Mariana.Als de nieuwe artiest in residentie van AMUZ zal ze de komende concertseizoenen te horen zijn met verschillende ensembles en heel divers repertoire. U mag zich verwachten aan zeer veel moois!

IN RESIDENCEThe Czech soprano Hana Blažíková is a frequent guest at European and Japanese concert halls, where she works with renowned musicians such as Philippe Herreweghe, Masaaki Suzuki, Ton Koopman and Peter Kooij. Hana Blažíková feels truly at home in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, but also excels at Gregorian and mediaeval music. She is certainly no stranger to Romantic lieder or contemporary music either. She plays the Gothic harp and even the bass guitar in the rock band Stillknox and is a member of the Tiburtina Ensemble and Cappella Mariana.As the new artist in residence at AMUZ, you can hear her at work with various ensembles in a highly diverse repertoire for the coming concert season. Expect things of great beauty!

Europa werd in de 14de eeuw geteisterd door rampen, tegenspoed en grote omwentelingen. De pest en de Honderdjarige Oorlog maakten miljoenen slachtoffers. Het continent was politiek verdeeld, niet in het minst door de strijd tussen de pausen in Avignon en Rome. Tegelijk was deze ‘waanzinnige eeuw’ een bloeiende periode voor de kunsten, met als beroemdste literaire voorbeelden Dante’s Divina Commedia, Boccaccio’s Decamerone en de Canterbury Tales van Chaucer.

Laus Polyphoniae 2016 richt zijn pijlen op de omwentelin-gen in de 14de-eeuwse muziek in die Europese context. In Frankrijk realiseerde Philippe de Vitry een muzikale kentering dankzij zijn traktaat Ars Nova. Het notatiesysteem kreeg een serieuze boost waardoor componisten complexere muziek konden schrijven, zoals blijkt uit de motetten, chansons en de Messe de Nostre Dame van Guillaume de Machaut. De complexiteit werd op het einde van de 14de eeuw op de spits gedreven met de bijzonder verfijnde muziek van de ars subtilior. De Vitry’s invloed reikte tot in Italië, waar componisten prachtige motetten en werken in de volkstaal schreven. Op de Britse eilanden ontstond dan weer een heel eigen unieke polyfonie.

Tien zomerdagen lang komt de wereld van de 14de eeuw tot leven tijdens de concerten van Laus Polyphoniae op historische locaties in Antwerpen. Van de ellende van de zwarte dood, tot de pracht en praal aan het pauselijke hof in Avignon en staatsfeesten in Venetië. Laus Polyphoniae nodigde gevestigde waarden en jonge ensembles uit die de muzikale rijkdom verkennen van de Lage Landen, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Engeland, Spanje, Cyprus, Israël, Tsjechië en zelfs IJsland. Tijdens lecture-performances kan u zich verdiepen in de toenmalige uitvoeringspraktijk en de context van een van de belangrijkste handschriften uit die tijd. En zelfs de jongsten worden muzikaal verwend tijdens speciale babyconcerten.

In the 14th century, Europe was ravaged by countless disasters, misfortune and major transformations. The plague and the Hundred Years’ War claimed millions of lives. The continent was politically divided, not least by the conflict between the popes in Avignon and Rome. At the same time, however, this ‘calamitous century’ was a period in which the arts flourished: Dante wrote the Divine Comedy, Boccaccio the Decameron and Chaucer the Canterbury Tales.

Laus Polyphoniae 2016 will focus on the transformations in 14th century music in a European context. In France, Philippe de Vitry brought about a startling turn in music with his treatise Ars Nova. The notation system made great advances, allowing composers to write more complex music, as can be seen in Guillaume de Machaut’s motets, chansons and the Messe de Nostre Dame. This complexity reached a climax at the end of the 14th century in the particularly refined music of the ars subtilior. De Vitry’s influence extended as far as Italy, where composers were writing stunning motets and pieces in the vernacular. In the British Isles, however, composers developed a unique form of polyphony all of their own.

For ten summer days, the world of the 14th century will come to life at the Laus Polyphoniae concerts held at historic locations in Antwerp, taking audiences from the misery of the Black Death to the magnificent grandeur of the Papal Palace in Avignon and state occasions in Venice. Laus Polyphoniae invites famous names and young ensembles to explore the musical treasures of the Low Countries, France, Germany, England, Spain, Cyprus, Israel, the Czech Republic and even Iceland. Attend lecture performances and learn about 14th century performance practice and the context of the most important manuscripts of the time. There is even something for our very youngest audiences, who are bound to love our special concerts for babies.

Huelgas EnsembleCYPRIOTISCHE O-ANTIFONENHet middeleeuwse Cyprus, op het kruispunt van de Europese, Aziatische en Afrikaanse cultuur, ontwikkelde een heel eigen rijke en geavanceerde muzikale stijl, duidelijk beïnvloed door de ars subtilior. Huelgas Ensemble verwent u met de Cypriotische O-Antifonen – religieuze motetten die geen deel uitmaakten van een mistekst en waarvan de tekst steeds begint met de letter O – met unieke polyfonie uit het bijzondere manuscript J.II.9 (Turijn).

International Young Artist’s Presentation

CONCERTWANDELINGDe International Young Artist’s Presentation (IYAP) geeft jonge vocale en instrumentale artiesten die zich toeleggen op de historische uitvoeringspraktijk een duwtje in de rug op de internationale muziek-scene. De geselecteerde artiesten en ensembles worden in 2016 intensief begeleid en gecoacht door Peter Van Heyghen en Raquel Andueza. U kunt de geselecteerde IYAP-ensembles van 2016 ontdekken tijdens een unieke concertwandeling in Borgerhout.

CONCERT WALKThe International Young Artist’s Presentation (IYAP) gives young vocal and instrumental artists focusing on historical performance practice a foothold in the international music scene. The artists and ensembles selected in 2016 will be intensively coached and mentored by Peter Van Heyghen and Raquel Andueza. Alla FrancescaLA PESTE OU LE TRIOMPHE DE LA MORT – COMMENT DIEU “FIT SORTIR LA MORT DE SA CAGE”Op basis van enkele herontdekte joodse muzikale schatten uit het oosten van Frankrijk en Duitsland stelt Alla Francesca een zeldzaam en verfijnd programma samen met muziek in de volkstaal uit de eeuw van de zwarte dood. Hebreeuwse en Jiddische liederen, ballades van Guillaume de Machaut, klaagzangen tijdens de processies, minneliederen ... vertellen op aangrijpende wijze hoe de bevolking omging met de verwoestende pestepidemie en hoe men probeerde eigen of andere zielen te redden.

Rediscovered gems of Jewish music from Germany and eastern France form the basis of Alla Fran-cesca’s unusual and refined programme, along with music in the vernacular from the century of the Black Death. Hebrew and Yiddish songs, ballads by Guillaume de Machaut, lamentations during proces-sions and Minnesang are among the poignant works that recount how the population dealt with the devastating plague epidemic and how people tried to save their own souls or those of others.

Gothic VoicesPILGRIMAGE TO CANTERBURYGeïnspireerd op Chaucers Canterbury Tales neemt Gothic Voices ons mee op een imaginaire pelgrims-tocht naar het schrijn van de Heilige Thomas in Can-terbury. De vier zangers brengen motetten, Engelse cantilenes en eenstemmige gezangen ter ere van de martelaar, afgewisseld met mariale hymnes en antifonen en seculiere gezangen. Er wordt ook gereciteerd uit de Pardoner’s Tale, een fragment uit Chaucers verhalenbundel en het gedicht Lestentytz lordyngs bothe grete and smale. PILGRIMAGE TO CANTERBURY Inspired by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Gothic Voices takes us on an imaginary pilgrimage to the shrine of St Thomas in Canterbury. Le Miroir de Musique MACHAUT ET LES VISAGES DE LA MORTVoor Guillaume de Machaut, de meester bij uitstek van de ars nova, is het idee van de dood een zeer sterk poëtisch element. Het gaat hem vooral om ‘la mort d’amour’, de liefdesdood, soms voorgesteld als een verlossing (weg van de kwellingen van de liefde), soms als een overheersende pijn (het gescheiden zijn van de geliefde). Machaut hergebruikt hiervoor het thema van de dood in religieuze context: Christus aan het kruis. Deze verwijzingen tussen de thema’s creëren een boeiende gelaagdheid in de muziek. Le Miroir de Musique laat u kennismaken met de ongeëvenaarde stijl van Machaut.

For Guillaume de Machaut, the absolute master of the ars nova, the idea of death is a very prominent poetic motif. He is particularly concerned with the ‘lovers’ death’, sometimes presented as salvation (from the tortures of love), and sometimes as over-powering pain (being separated from the beloved). Machaut reuses this theme here in a religious context: the death of Christ on the cross. These references between themes create a fascinating complexity in the music. In the mid-14th century, the plague had already killed a third of the population of Europe. Those like Guillaume de Machaut who could not flee from the plague epidemic hid in their houses and put their hope in spiritual protection from the flagel-lants, who processed through the city singing and scourging themselves. Toen de pest in het midden van de 14de eeuw grote delen van Azië, Europa en Afrika trof, was dit motto actueler dan ooit. Het jonge, maar reeds met prijzen overladen Sollazzo Ensemble speelt een repertoire gebaseerd op deze thematiek uit de eeuw van de zwarte dood.

Cito, longe, tarde (flee quickly, go far, return slowly) was the wise advice of the Greek doctors Hippocrates and Galen to the population when an epidemic broke out. When the plague hit large areas of Asia, Europe and Africa in the mid-14th century, this motto was more pertinent than ever. The Sollazzo Ensemble, already showered with awards despite their youth, will play a repertoire based on this theme from the century of the Black Death.

The Messe de Tournai is a polyphonic collection of parts of the mass written exclusively for male voices. Nonetheless, the three women who make up Trio Mediaeval have created an inimitable new version. This mediaeval work is programmed alongside motets and songs from the same period and the contemporary Words of the Angel by Ivan Moody: a combination that promises to result in a mystical evening in the atmospheric surroundings of the candlelit St.-Pauluskerk!

PENTAMERONEDe personages uit Decamerone van Boccaccio ontvluchten de zwarte dood. Zij verblijven samen op een plek buiten de stad en vullen er de tijd met ver-makelijke verhalen. Ook tijdens de muziekvakantie komen elke dag blijgemutste kinderen en jongeren samen. Hun tijd delen zij in volgens een strak ritueel. Zij vertellen elkaar verhalen, musiceren en dansen. They stay at a place outside the city, entertaining themselves with stories to pass the time. De meeste kinderen blijven lekker op de schoot bij mama of papa, maar avontuurlijke kleintjes wagen zich ook tussen de muzikanten. Het mag allemaal! Net als meezingen, klappen in de handen en bovenal actief ontdekken! In lijn met het festivalthema brengen de muzikanten muziek uit de 14de eeuw.

Concertos para Bebés gives babies, toddlers and young children up to the age of five an interactive introduction to classical music. The concerts are held in a play area in the middle of the hall. The musicians are surrounded by cushions for the young audience and their parents. Most children prefer to stay on Mum or Dad’s lap, but more adventurous toddlers venture out among the musicians. Either way is fine! And why not sing along as well, clap your hands and – most important of all – take an active approach to discovering music. In line with the theme of the festival, the musicians will perform music from the 14th century.

Ensemble Organum MISSA GOTICA – AVIGNON, TOULOUSE, BARCELONA, APTIn de traditie van de Messe de Nostre-Dame van Machaut creëert Marcel Pérès een nieuwe polyfone mis met delen uit de manuscripten van Toulouse, Barcelona en Apt, zoals die in Avignon kon klinken. De vestiging van het pausdom in Avignon (1309-1377) leidt tot contacten tussen zangers uit het Noorden en het Zuiden, waardoor volledig nieuw repertoire ontstaat. De Missa Gotica representeert op meesterlijke wijze de significante vernieuwingen in de muziek (ars nova) evenals gelijktijdige ontwik-kelingen in de liturgie onder invloed van de pausen van Avignon.

Following the tradition of Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame, Marcel Pérès has created a new polyphonic mass with parts taken from manuscripts in Toulouse and Barcelona, the way it might have sounded in Avignon. The establishment of the Avignon Papacy (1309-1377) led to contact between singers from northern and southern Europe, which resulted in an entirely new repertoire. Missa Gotica is a masterly representation of the significant innovations in music (ars nova) and concurrent developments in the liturgy under the influence of the popes of Avignon.

Hij creëerde een unieke structuur met verwijzingen tussen de misdelen en een sterke muzikale eenheid, met een ongehoorde textuur en vocale mogelijkheden, majestueus verkend door Björn Schmelzer en graindelavoix.

The Messe de Nostre Dame is one of the great icons of the 14th century. It is among the first complete masses known to us that were composed by a single composer: Guillaume de Machaut. He was a poet, diplomat, canon and composer all at once. He created a unique musical structure with references between the parts of the mass and a strong musical unity, with an unprecedented texture and vocal fireworks, performed here in a majestic interpretation by Björn Schmelzer and graindelavoix.

In 1972 maakten Viktor Derevianko en Mark Pekarsky een kleurrijke en interessante bewerking voor pianotrio en percussie die dicht aanleunt bij het origineel en werd goedgekeurd door de componist zelf.

SYMPHONY NO. 15 BY SHOSTAKOVICH AS CHAMBER MUSICShostakovich has been called the “last symp-honist”. He wrote his fifteenth symphony in the summer of 1971, shortly before his 65th birthday. Critics were unanimous in recognising the particular importance of this work, praising the richness of Shostakovich’s ideas, his mastery as a composer and his intellect. In 1972, Viktor Derevianko and Mark Pekarsky made a colourful and interesting ar-rangement for piano trio and percussion. Remaining faithful to the original, it gained the approval of the composer himself.

In deze bundel van dertien poëtische stukjes voert de componist zichzelf én de luisteraars terug naar de kindertijd. Met enkele subtiele penseelstreken evoceert hij de vele gemoedstoestanden van een kind, balancerend tussen angst, nieuwsgierigheid en geborgenheid. Oude familiekiekjes en -filmpjes uit het archief van het Huis van Alijn geven de muziek een extra nostalgische toets. Deze voorstelling is een spin-off van de kindervoorstelling Gelukkig genoeg. Nu voor volwassenen.

Can a person be Happy Enough? What bliss lies in these words, which are also the title of the fifth movement of Kinderszenen by Robert Schumann. In this collection of thirteen short, poetic pieces, the composer takes himself and his listeners back into childhood. With a few subtle brush strokes, he evokes the many moods of a child. Old family pho-tographs and films from the House of Alijn’s archive give the music an extra touch of nostalgia. This production is a spin-off from the children’s theatre production Gelukkig genoeg, now in a version for adults.

Lore Binon & Inge Spinette LES POÈTES MAUDITSIn 1884 publiceert Paul Verlaine een bloemlezing met als titel Les poètes maudits. Het is de defini-tieve aanzet van een literaire stroming die eigenlijk niet bedoeld was er één te zijn. Miskende, ver-schopte kunstenaars, ondergedompeld in drank en drugs, zonde en decadentie, zoals Verlaine, Rimbaud en Mallarmé kregen – ongevraagd – navolging en inspireerden tal van andere kunstenaars, onder wie componisten als Debussy, Hahn, Poulenc en Ravel. Na haar opgemerkte optreden met Revue Blanche in november 2015 kon een snel weerzien met de Belgische sopraan Lore Binon niet uitblijven.

In 1884, Paul Verlaine published an anthology entitled Les poètes maudits. It is the definitive identification of a literary movement that was never meant to be one at all. Rejected, derided artists, drowning in drink and drugs, decadence and depravity, such as Verlaine, Rimbaud and Mallarmé gained an unsought following, inspiring countless other artists including composers such as Debussy, Hahn, Poulenc and Ravel. After her remarkable per-formance with Revue Blanche in November 2015, we knew we would be seeing the Belgian soprano Lore Binon again before long.

Cyril Auvity & L’YriadeSTANCES DU CID & AIRS DE COUR In het 17de-eeuwse Frankrijk waren de ‘airs de cour’ (een seculier liedgenre) populair bij alle lagen van de bevolking. De ‘haute-contre’ (een lichte, hoge tenor) kreeg daarbij de voorkeur als zangstem: gedistingeerd, zacht en helder. Stances du Cid combineert een selectie van Charpentiers werken met airs de cour van een vroegere meester van het genre, Michael Lambert. Daarnaast staan expressieve, instrumentale triosonaten van François Couperin uit het Franse ancien régime op het programma.

In 17th century France, ‘airs de cour’ – a form of secular song – were popular among all social classes. The favourite singers were the ‘haute-contres’ (light, high tenors) with their distinguis-hed, soft and clear voices. Stances du Cid brings together a selection of Charpentier’s works with airs de cour by an earlier master of the genre, Michael Lambert. The programme also includes expressive, instrumental trio sonatas from the French Ancien Régime by François Couperin.

The Image of Melancholy is based on the theme of melancholy in the British music of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Geen enkele fluitist waagde zich ooit aan een dergelijk uitgebreid onderzoek. Het resultaat ervan hoort u live in AMUZ!

THE KEYED FLUTE In the 19th century, the keyed flute was in its heyday. As part of her doctoral research the German flautist Anne Pustlauk spent three years studying and collecting around 140 historic teaching courses for the flute, playing original instruments and searching for the best chamber music repertoire for flute and keyboard and/or strings. CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACHOver de klaviermuziek van Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, de tweede zoon van J.S. Bach, schreef J.F. Reichardt dat “geen enkele muziek voorheen zo rijk en harmo-nieus was, met zo’n nobele zang, zoveel schoonheid, orde en originaliteit”. Die gevoelige zangerigheid geldt ook voor andere instrumentale werken zoals zijn sinfonia’s en triosonaten. De jonge Britse Charles-worth, winnaar van de ‘Händelwedstrijd’ in Londen (2013) en van de Cesti Competition in Innsbruck (2014) is met zijn elegante en zoete stem de geknipte zanger voor Bachs galante aria’s en cantaten.

Writing about the keyboard music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the second son of J.S. Bach, J.F. Reichardt claimed that “no earlier music had ever been so rich and harmonious, with such a noble lilt, such beauty, order and originality.” The sensitive lilt of C.P.E. Bach’s music can also be heard in other instrumental works, such as his sinfonias and trio sonatas. Rupert Charlesworth, the young British winner of the Handel Singing Competition in London (2013) and the Cesti Competition in Innsbruck (2014) is the perfect singer for the galant areas and cantatas, with his attractive and elegant voice.

MESSIAENS QUATUOR POUR LA FIN DU TEMPS EN RICHARD POWERS’ ORFEOComponist en organist Olivier Messiaen schreef zijn Quatuor als Duitse oorlogsgevangene in Görlitz (1940-1942). Onder zijn medegevangenen waren er nog drie muzikanten, wat de ongewone instrumen-tatie viool, klarinet, cello en piano verklaart. Verteller François Beukelaers leest fragmenten uit het boek Orfeo van Richard Powers, een roman waarin “biologie en muziek, verleden en heden op een ingenieuze manier samenkomen”. Het belooft een beklijvende avond te worden.

Composer and organist Olivier Messiaen wrote his Quatuor as a German prisoner of war in Görlitz (1940-1942). There were three other musicians among the prisoners, which is the reason for the unusual instrumentation: violin, clarinet, cello and piano. Narrator François Beukelaers reads fragments from the book Orfeo by Richard Powers, a novel in which “biology and music, past and present come together in an ingenious manner”. An evening that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Hasnaa Bennani & Les MuffattiLITTLE SIREN OF THE STAGESopraan Francesca Cuzzoni, ook wel de kleine sirene van het podium genoemd, was de absolute prima donna van de Londense operascene in het begin van de 18de eeuw. Händel kende haar stem als geen ander en liet de vele verschillende facetten ervan ruimschoots aan bod komen. Hasnaa Bennani, die internationaal furore maakt, zingt gedragen en diep emotioneel, soms ontwapenend ontroerend door eenvoud, maar ook wel licht en speels en af en toe zelfs verbeten of verrassend virtuoos.

Soprano Francesca Cuzzoni, also known as “the little siren of the stage”, was the uncontested prima donna of the London opera scene at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Handel knew her voice better than anyone, and showcased its many different facets to dazzling effect. Hasnaa Bennani, the singer creating a storm on international stages, gives a majestic and deeply emotional perfor-mance that is sometimes moving in its simplicity and at other times ranges from light playfulness to moments of repressed rage or astonishing virtuosity.

IN MEMORY OF THE GREAT ARTIST RUBINSTEINTsjaikovski schreef zijn pianotrio in Rome rond 1881-1882. Hij voorzag die van de ondertitel “In memory of a great artist”, voor zijn goede vriend en mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, die eerder dat jaar overleed. Het trio bestaat uit twee delen en wordt beschouwd als een van de moeilijkste werken die Tsjaikovski voor piano schreef. Het eerste deel klinkt melancholisch, warm en gepassioneerd en bevat de typerende brede melodieën. Het tweede deel werd enorm gesmaakt omwille van zijn adembenemend lyrisch-weemoedige karakter en verdrietige expressie.

Tchaikovsky wrote his piano trio in Rome in about 1881-1882, subtitling it “In memory of a great artist”, for his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubin-stein who died earlier that year. The trio is in two parts and is considered one of the most difficult works that Tchaikovsky wrote for the piano. The first part has a melancholy, warm and passionate sound, incorporating the composer’s typical broad melodies. The second part was greatly appreciated for its breathtaking, lyrically gloomy character and sorrowful expressiveness.

Collegium Vocale Gent ISRAELIS BRÜNNLEINHet oeuvre van Johann Hermann Schein behoort tot het beste van wat de Duitse vroegbarok heeft voortgebracht. Op teksten uit het Oude Testament componeerde hij de Fontana d’Israel of Israelis Brünnlein, een verzameling werken ‘in een speciale, elegante Italiaanse madrigaalstijl’. Schein laat verzen, woorden, lettergrepen en accenten tempo en ritmiek bepalen. De verhalende inhoud van de tekst werkt dan weer in op de melodievoering, har-monische opzet, kleur en sfeer van de liederen, met een krachtig, beklijvend en ontroerend resultaat.

The work of Johann Hermann Schein is among the best music written in the German Early Baroque. He composed Fontana d’Israel or Israelis Brünnlein to Old Testament texts as a collection of pieces ‘in a special, elegant Italian madrigal style’. Schein allows verses, words, syllables and accents to determine rhythm and tempo. In turn, the narrative content of the text influences the melodic line, harmonic intentions, colour and atmosphere of the songs, with an outcome that is powerful, gripping and moving.

More MaiorumLA NUOVA MANIERA‘Nieuw’ is het kernwoord voor dit concert: het voorgestelde repertoire, het bijbehorende arsenaal aan affectieve en virtuoze versieringen die rond 1600 door de Italianen zelf reeds als vernieu-wend werden beschouwd én een volledig nieuw instrumentarium. Kris Verhelst liet een nieuw orgel en een nieuw klavecimbel bouwen die in première gaan tijdens dit concert. Meer zelfs: ook de basviool en de blokfluiten werden speciaal voor dit reper-toire en concertprogramma gebouwd.

‘New’ is the key to this concert: in the repertoire it presents and the accompanying array of affective and virtuoso ornaments that the Italians themselves already found innovative around the year 1600, along with a completely new set of instruments. Kris Verhelst has had a new organ and harpsichord made for her, to be premiered at this concert. And that is not all: the bass violins and recorders were made especially for this repertoire and concert programme as well.

Geïnspireerd door het programma La nuova maniera van More Maiorum krijgen de kinderen elementen van de Italiaanse barokmuziek aangereikt als bouwstenen voor hun eerste composities.

W.A. MOZART EN DE BASSETKLARINETMozart gebruikte de bassetklarinet in drie meester-lijke composities: La Clemenza di Tito, KV 621, het Klarinetkwintet, KV 581 en zijn Klarinetconcerto, KV 622. De bassetklarinet is een klarinet met een erg laag bereik, hiervoor voorzien van een systeem van duimkleppen vergelijkbaar met dat van de fagot. Mozart schreef deze stukken voor vriend en klarinettist Anton Stadler, die in dienst was van het Weense hoforkest. Vlad Weverbergh wordt geflankeerd door het jonge en beloftevolle Consone Quartet, voor het eerst op het podium van AMUZ.

W.A. MOZART AND THE BASSET CLARINETMozart used the basset clarinet in three masterly compositions: La Clemenza di Tito, KV 621, the Clarinet Quintet, KV 581 and his Clarinet Concerto, KV 622. The basset clarinet is a clarinet with a particularly low range, achieved by means of a thumb key system comparable to that of a bassoon. Mozart wrote these pieces for his clarinettist friend Anton Stadler, who was employed by the Viennese Court Orchestra. Vlad Weverbergh is joined by the promising young Consone Quartet, on stage at AMUZ for the first time.

Le Poème HarmoniqueLEÇONS DE TÉNÈBRES François Couperin was in dienst van de Franse koning Lodewijk XIV, maar componeerde zijn Leçons de ténèbres in 1714 voor de abdij van Longchamp. Hij schreef ze voor de drie laatste dagen van de Goede Week. Het werk wordt gekenmerkt door een hoogmelismatische vocale lijn. De muziek is van een ongekende schoonheid, absoluut een van de hoogtepunten van de Franse barok. Ze is dan ook in perfecte handen bij Vincent Dumestre en zijn Poème Harmonique.

François Couperin was in the service of the French king Louis XIV, but composed his Leçons de ténèbres in 1714 for the abbey at Longchamp. They were written for the last three days of Holy Week and are characterised by a highly melismatic vocal line. This is music of unparalleled beauty, one of the absolute jewels of French Baroque. With Vincent Dumestre and Poème Harmonique, it is also in perfect hands.

Abdel Rahman El BachaCHOPIN 1842-1845Chopins oeuvre bestaat bijna geheel uit composities voor solopiano: technisch zeer veeleisend en met subtiele nuances en expressieve diepten. Tussen 1842 en 1845 beleeft Chopin een intense, maar moeilijke relatie met de schrijfster George Sand. Het is ook een periode waarin hij zijn compositorische ambities herbekijkt. Het resultaat, zoals de Drie mazurkas, opus 59 of de Sonate nr. 3 in bes, opus 58, behoort tot het beste wat hij heeft geschre-ven. El Bacha draagt Chopin op handen en is de gedroomde pianist voor deze meesterwerken. U hoort hem op Chris Maenes prachtige kopie van een Grand Concert Pleyel Piano uit 1843.

Chopin’s oeuvre consists almost entirely of works for solo piano: extremely demanding at a technical level, but with subtle nuance and expressive depth. Between 1842 and 1845, Chopin was in an intense but difficult relationship with the writer George Sand. It is also a period in which he was reconsi-dering his ambitions as a composer. The results, including the Three Mazurkas, opus 59 or the Sonata No. 3 in B minor, opus 58 are among the best work he ever wrote. You will hear El Bacha on Chris Maene’s impressive copy of a Grand Concert Pleyel Piano dating from 1843.

This Christmas programme takes us back to the Renaissance. Christmas songs in German from the Lutheran tradition stand alongside Catholic motets in Latin. Julian Prégardien & Masato SuzukiWINTERREISEDe liedcyclus Winterreise van Franz Schubert bevat 24 getoonzette gedichten van Wilhelm Müller voor zangstem en piano. “Schubert begrijpt de genialiteit van de dichter. De emoties in de gedichten worden op zo’n manier in muziek omgezet dat het niet mogelijk is de liederen te zingen of te beluisteren zonder diep te worden geraakt”, schreef de Thea-terzeitung in 1828. Rijzende ster Julian Prégardien zorgt voor een krachtige en expressieve uitvoering.

The Winterreise song cycle by Franz Schubert consists of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller in a setting for voice and piano. “Schubert understands the poet’s genius. The emotions in the poems are trans-formed into music in such a way that it is impos-sible to sing or hear the songs without being deeply moved,” the Theaterzeitung wrote in 1828. Rising star Julian Prégardien meets with great enthusiasm for his powerful and expressive performances.

Hij belandde door zijn toenemende doofheid in een persoonlijke crisis en schreef grootse werken die heroïek en strijd uitdrukken. The three piano sonatas Waldstein, Appassionata and Les Adieux date from the middle of Beethoven’s career as a composer. He had fallen into a personal crisis due to his increasing deafness, and was writing major work expressing heroism and conflict. The Russian pianist Olga Pashchenko, praised as “one of the most talented all-round pianists of the younger generation” by the pianist Aleksander Melnikov, will give an enthralling performance on the fortepiano.

Vox Luminis & Ensemble MasquesABENDMUSIKENDe ‘Abendmusiken’ waren een legendarische concertreeks die Buxtehude organiseerde in Lübeck. J.S. Bach kwam zelfs van ver om deze avonden met religieuze en instrumentale muziek bij te wonen. De muziek die speciaal voor deze gelegenheid werd gecomponeerd, is verloren gegaan, maar ongetwij-feld weerklonken ook de cantaten die Vox Luminis en Ensemble Masques in AMUZ brengen.

The ‘Abendmusiken’ were a legendary series of concerts that Buxtehude organised in Lübeck. Even J.S. Bach travelled a long way to attend these evenings of religious and instrumental music. The music composed especially for those occasions has been lost, but the cantatas that Vox Luminis and Ensemble Masques will perform at AMUZ must surely have been among the pieces heard there.

Veronika Skuplik en Kris Verhelst ontmoetten elkaar in 2011 en waren sindsdien betrokken bij verschil-lende muzikale projecten. In november 2015 stonden beiden op het podium in AMUZ met Bruce Dickey en Hana Blažíková, wat de directe aanleiding vormde tot dit recital. Met zijn muzikale gevoeligheid en virtuoze trefzekerheid is het Italiaanse ‘aroma’ dat zich in de eerste helft van de 18de eeuw over het continent verspreidde – van het diepe Napels tot het hoge Londen – hen op het lijf geschreven.

Beautiful productions often generate more beauty in turn. Veronika Skuplik and Kris Verhelst met in 2011 and have been involved in a range of musical projects since then. In November 2015, they performed at AMUZ with Bruce Dickey and Hana Blažíková, after which we immediately asked them to come back for this recital. The duo have a deep affinity with the musical sensitivity and virtuoso precision of the Italian style of music that spread across the continent, from Naples in the south as far as London in the north, in the first half of the 18th century.

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was wellicht een van de meest invloedrijke vrouwen van haar tijd. Reeds als veertienjarige trad ze binnen in het klooster van Disibodenberg waar ze later de priores zou worden. In 1150 richtte ze haar eigen klooster op in Rupertsberg nabij Bingen. Dankzij haar intelligentie, kennis en vele talenten excelleerde ze op vele gebieden. Ze schreef over geneeskunde, wetenschap en religie en correspondeerde met belangrijke politieke en geestelijke leiders uit haar tijd, onder wie keizers en pausen. Haar visioenen noteerde ze in het boek Scivias, teksten over natuurwetenschappen en geneeskunde bundelde ze tussen 1150 en 1160 in Physica en Causa et cure. Haar prachtige muziek is terug te vinden in twee boeken, de Riesencodex die in Wiesbaden wordt bewaard, en een manuscript dat in het bezit is van de abdij van Dendermonde. De rijkdom van haar mystieke teksten en muziek blijft tot op vandaag tot de verbeelding spreken. Van uiterst eenvoudige hymnen, tot melismatische responsoria – haar prachtige liederen laten niemand onberoerd. Haar hemelse muziek zal vier dagen lang in AMUZ weerklinken, samen met de muziek van andere componisten die zich door mystiek lieten inspireren. Het Collectief en Psallentes geven een podium aan een andere grote componiste, de Russische Galina Ustvolskaya. Het Belgische Goeyvaerts Strijktrio legt de relatie met de verstilde muziek van de Italiaan Giacinto Scelsi. Het Hongaarse Ensemble Geneamus speelt de muziek van Hildegard op middeleeuwse instrumenten, en experimenteert ook met elektronische klanken die het etherische karakter van haar muziek nog versterken. (Trouwens, wist u dat er ook een planeet rondom de zon cirkelt, die aan Hildegard is opgedragen?) De Amerikaanse musicologe Honey Meconi heeft het leven en de muziek van Hildegard jarenlang onderzocht. Ter gelegen-heid van HILDEGARDinPRIMETIME komt zij haar onderzoeksresultaten in primeur aan het publiek voorstellen. Vier dagen lang beleeft u in AMUZ middeleeuwse en hedendaagse verstilling en mystiek.

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was probably one of the most influential women of her time. At the age of only fourteen, she entered the Disibodenberg monastery, where she would later become the prioress. In 1150, she founded her own convent in Rupertsberg near Bingen. Her intelligence, knowledge and many talents enabled her to excel in many areas. She wrote on medicine, science and religion and corresponded with important political and spiritual leaders of her time, including popes and emperors. She recorded her visions in the book Scivias and collected her texts on natural sciences and medicine between 1150 and 1160 in Physica and Causa et cure. Her beautiful music can be found in two books, the Riesencodex that is kept in Wiesbaden and a manuscript in possession of Dendermonde Abbey. The wealth of her mystic texts and music continue to appeal to the imagination even today. From extremely simple hymns to melismatic responsories – her magnificent songs leave no one unmoved. Her heavenly music can be heard for four days at AMUZ, along with the music of other composers inspired by mysticism. Het Collectief and Psallentes also present the work of another great female composer, the Russian Galina Ustvolskaya. The Belgian Goeyvaerts Trio links Hildegard’s work with that of the Italian Giacinto Scelsi. Ensemble Geneamus from Hungary will play Hildegard’s music on mediaeval instruments, also experimenting with electronic sounds that bring out the ethereal aspect of her music even more. The biography of the 12th century abbess, mystic, composer, philosopher, botanist and linguist is perfect material for such a film. We see Hildegard, as a Benedictine nun, breaking free from patriarchal rule and founding her own convent on the Ruperts-berg in Bingen, as well as the precariousness of her relationships with the other nuns. Vision shows the human face of one of the most fascinating women of the Middle Ages.

INSPIRED BY SONGDe jonge Zuid-Afrikaanse blokfluitist Stefan Temmingh nodigde sopraan Dorothee Mields uit voor een programma rond Engelse liederen. Bekende deuntjes als Greensleeves en liederen als Flow my Tears van Dowland reisden over heel Europa in instrumentale (en vaak virtuoze) bewer-kingen en variatiereeksen. Temmingh en Mields moeten niet voor elkaar onderdoen in zeggings-kracht, inleving en bravoure. Sit back and enjoy!

The young South African recorder player Stefan Temmingh has invited soprano Dorothee Mields to join him for a programme of English songs. Well-known tunes such as Greensleeves and songs such as Dowland’s Flow my Tears travelled all over Europe in instrumental adaptations – many of which were highly virtuoso – and variation series. Valerij Kisseljow & Els BiesemansPOUR LA BELLE JOSEPHINE De mooie en intelligente Josephine Brunsvick was wellicht Beethovens mysterieuze 'unsterbliche Geliebte'. Hij gaf haar pianoles en eerde haar met enkele werken, zoals het Andante favori en de variaties op Ich denke dein. Er was echter nog een andere Josephine in Beethovens leven: Josephine von Clary-Aldringen, een zangeres en begenadigd mandolinespeelster. Voor haar schreef Beethoven de werken voor mandoline en piano. Ook Beet-hovens beroemde tijdgenoot Johann Nepomuk Hummel schreef een indrukwekkend werk voor deze bezetting.

The beautiful and intelligent Josephine Brunsvick was probably Beethoven’s mysterious ‘immortal beloved’. He gave her piano lessons and honoured her with several pieces, including the Andante favori and the variations on Ich denke dein. However, there was another Josephine in Beethoven’s life, Josephine von Clary-Aldringen, a singer and talented mandolin player. Beethoven wrote his pieces for mandolin and piano for her. Beethoven’s famous contemporary Johann Nepomuk Hummel also wrote an impressive piece for these instruments.

Jan Dismas Zelenka is one of the most important representatives of the Bohemian Baroque. Although he spent most of his life at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, his music is closer to the Italian style of the Catholic Viennese Baroque than the German Protestant tradition. J.S. Bach himself was among his admirers. These poignant Lamen-tationes, to bible texts taken from the Book of Jeremiah, were performed during Holy Week.

Die hebben we opgezet samen met de collega’s van Collegium Vocale Gent, Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, deFilharmonie, Koningin Elisabethzaal en deSingel. Met vier concerten op drie verschillende locaties, die we voor de gelegenheid tot een ‘Virtueel Concertplatform Antwerpen’ hebben gemaakt. Een virtuele ruimte die we delen in één abonnement met ticketverkoop voor en in elkaars zalen en online streaming. Samen hebben we een groot feest te vieren.

Philippe Herreweghe will be seventy years old in May 2017. How better to celebrate his birthday than with a special concert series? Zijn composities balanceren op de dunne scheidingslijn tussen traditie en revolutionaire vernieuwing. De esthetische spanning tussen beide, of de combinatie ervan bleek een bron van onuitput-telijke artistieke rijkdom, zoals te horen is in de acht madrigalenbundels die Monteverdi tussen 1587 en het einde van zijn leven schreef. (De negende bundel verscheen postuum.) Op en top expressief, vol kleur en reliëf vertolkt Collegium Vocale Gent madrigalen uit de zesde en achtste bundel.

No composer embodies the transition from the Re-naissance to the Baroque better than Claudio Mon-teverdi. His compositions balance on the fine line between tradition and revolutionary innovation. The aesthetic tension between them, or the combination of the two, turned out to be a source of inexhausti-ble artistic wealth, as can be heard from the eight collections of madrigals that Monteverdi wrote between 1587 and the end of his life. Collegium Vocale Gent interprets madrigals from the sixth and eighth collections with abundant expression and a wealth of colour and texture.

Koor en Orkest Collegium Vocale Gent

HOHE MESSEWeinig barokcomponisten waren zich zo sterk bewust van hun historische positie als J.S. Bach. Hij zette doelbewust 'definitieve' versies van enkele van zijn grootste werken op papier voor het nageslacht. Tegelijkertijd werkte hij aan een grootse, allesomvattende mis, deels opgebouwd uit eerder geschreven cantaten, deels volledig nieuw gecomponeerd. In de H-moll Messe of Hohe Messe synthetiseert Bach twee eeuwen kerkmuziek op onnavolgbare wijze.

Few Baroque composers were as deeply conscious of their historical position as Johann Sebastian Bach. He deliberately set down ‘definitive’ versions of several of his greatest works on paper to be preserved for posterity. At the same time, he was working on a huge, all-encompassing mass, partly composed of previously written cantatas and partly a completely new work. In the Mass in B minor, or the Hohe Messe, Bach creates an incomparable synthesis of two centuries of ecclesiastical music.

BEETHOVEN 9Zingt oden aan de vreugde, want Philippe Her-reweghe tilt de meest belangwekkende symfonie uit de muziekgeschiedenis nog eens op het toneel. Toen Beethoven in 1824 koor én solisten liet opdraven in zijn nieuwste symfonie, tuimelde het bepoederde establishment pardoes van zijn stoel. Intussen heeft deze menslievende ode aan de broe-derschap niets meer te bewijzen. Minder grensver-leggend, maar minstens zo pakkend: Berlioz’ Tristia, een muzikaal essay over dood en droefenis op basis van Shakespeares Hamlet.

When Beethoven brought in a choir and soloists for his latest symphony in 1824, the powdered establishment practically fell over backwards. Since then, this humanist ode to brotherhood needs no introduction. It is complemen-ted with a piece that is less pioneering, but every bit as exciting: Berlioz’ Tristia, a musical essay on death and grief based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

VAN MACHAUT TOT DUFAY: HET PATRIMONIUM VAN DE 14DE EEUWTijdens de summerschool Van Machaut tot Dufay in het kader van Laus Polyphoniae worden gevorderde amateurs en jongprofessionele muzikanten een week lang gecoacht door internationale experten. Samen met andere cursisten werken ze rond een historisch repertoire waarbij het musiceren vanuit de bronnen centraal staat. Op het einde van de week presenteren de deelnemers hun resultaten aan het publiek. De masterclass is bedoeld voor (pre-)professionele zangers (groep 1) en gevorderde amateurzangers (groep 2).

International Young Artist’s Presentation 2016

De International Young Artist’s Presentation (IYAP) geeft jonge vocale en instrumentale artiesten en ensembles een duwtje in de rug op de internationale muziekscene. De geselecteerde artiesten en ensembles worden intensief begeleid en gecoacht door een of meerdere internationale topartiesten. Bovendien krijgen ze een podium tijdens Laus Polyphoniae in Antwerpen en krijgen ze de kans zich te presenteren aan een comité met internationale vertegenwoordigers uit de muziekwereld. De coaching en de concerten zijn voor de deelnemende artiesten en ensembles gratis. De International Young Artist’s Presentation wil op deze manier jonge musici aanmoedigen en bekend maken binnen de internationale muziekscene. Nadien worden deze artiesten en ensembles verder gepromoot.

The International Young Artist’s Presentation (IYAP) gives young vocal and instrumental artists and ensembles a foothold in the international music scene. The selected artists and ensembles will be intensively coached and mentored by one or more leading international artists. They will also have the chance to perform at Laus Polyphoniae in Antwerp and an opportunity to present their work to a committee of international representa-tives from the world of music. ZOMERCURSUS DAVIDSFONDS ACADEMIEIn de 14de eeuw zaaiden de pestepidemie en verschillende oorlogen dood en verderf in Europa. Toch was het niet alleen kommer en kwel. Tijdens deze zomercursus maakt u uitgebreid kennis met de culturele hoogtepun-ten die de donkere 14de eeuw deden oplichten.

Wolfgang Amadé Mozart Een verrassend portret van een geniaal componist

CURSUS DAVIDSFONDS ACADEMIEWolfgang Amadé, zo tekende Mozart zijn brieven. Op basis van zijn correspondentie schetst musicoloog en auteur Yves Knockaert het verrassende portret van Mozart, ontdaan van de mythe. Mozart was een geniaal componist, maar tegelijk een gewoon mens met leuke en minder aangename karaktertrekken. Uit zijn leven en zijn brieven komt ook een man naar voren die een kind van zijn tijd was. Iemand die vrij wilde zijn ten koste van alles. Zijn persoonlijke visie op wat muziek moet zijn, heeft Mozart uitgebreid beschreven in zijn brieven. Yves Knockaert geeft een totaalbeeld van Mozart en slaagt er wonderwel in om de originaliteit en de blijvende schoonheid van zijn muziek te beschrijven. Net zoals zijn muziek op een authentieke manier wordt uitgevoerd, licht Yves Knockaert in deze cursus leven en werk van Mozart toe op een authentieke en op feiten gebaseerde wijze.

MusicalmenteCONCERTOS PARA BEBÉS Concertos para Bebés laat baby's, peuters en kleuters tot vijf jaar speels en interactief kennismaken met klassieke muziek. De concerten vinden plaats op een speelvlak in het midden van de zaal. Rond de muzikan-ten liggen kussens voor het jonge publiek en hun ouders. De meeste kinderen blijven lekker op de schoot bij mama of papa, maar avontuurlijke kleintjes wagen zich ook tussen de muzikanten. Het mag allemaal! Net als meezingen, klappen in de handen en bovenal actief ontdekken! In lijn met het festivalthema brengen de muzikanten muziek uit de 14de eeuw.

Concertos para Bebés gives babies, toddlers and young children up to the age of five an interactive introduction to classical music. The concerts are held in a play area in the middle of the hall. The musicians are surrounded by cushions for the young audience and their parents. Most children prefer to stay on Mum or Dad’s lap, but more adventurous toddlers venture out among the musicians. Either way is fine! And why not sing along as well, clap your hands and – most important of all – take an active approach to discovering music. In line with the theme of the festival, the musicians will perform music from the 14th century.

KinderkunstendagIn het kader van de Kinderkunstendag organiseert AMUZ in samenwerking met De Veerman een muziekworkshop voor kinderen van 6 t.e.m. 8 jaar en van 9 t.e.m. 12 jaar. Body percussion en stemtechnieken bieden talrijke mogelijkheden om muziek te maken zonder instrumenten. Plezier verzekerd! Om 12.45 uur krijgen de ouders een demonstratie. Er is geen muzikale voorkennis vereist. Maximum 20 kinderen per groep. Snel inschrijven is dus aangewezen!

WORKSHOPEspecially for the Kinderkunstendag, AMUZ in collaboration with De Veerman is organising a music workshop for children aged six to eight and from nine to twelve. KlankenbadMUZIKALE DIALOGEN VOOR KINDEREN VAN 0 TOT 3 JAARDe mens vertoont de grootste aanleg voor muziek in zijn vroegste kindertijd. Het is dan ook heerlijk om met baby’s en peuters eenvoudige liedjes te zingen en te experimenteren met ritme en geluid. In de foyer van AMUZ kan u uw kindje tijdens vier korte sessies laten kennismaken met muzikaliteit. Klankenbad is gebaseerd op The Music Learning Theory van de gereputeerde pedagoog Edwin E. Gordon, die stelt dat muzikaliteit op dezelfde manier wordt verworven als taal. Gordons theorie toont aan dat op zeer jonge leeftijd in contact komen met muziek een grote invloed heeft op de toekomstige muzikale ontwikkeling. Heel nuttig dus om uw kind te stimuleren en spelenderwijze in contact te brengen met muziek, maar bovenal ook bijzonder plezierig voor ouder en kind! Er wordt gewerkt met drie leeftijdscategorieën. Baby’s worden gestimu-leerd in hun eigen muzikale gebrabbel. Peuters gaan aan de slag met melodie, ritme en beweging. Als ouder of begeleider ontdekt u hoe u ook thuis met uw kindje muziek kan maken.

MUSICAL DIALOGUES FOR CHILDREN AGED 0 TO 3Humans have the greatest aptitude for music in very early childhood. This makes it a wonderful experience to sing simple songs with babies and toddlers, experimenting with rhythm and sound. Come and find out about musicality with your child at four short sessions in the AMUZ foyer. Klankenbad is based on The Music Learning Theory by the renowned educationalist Edwin E. Gordon’s theory demonstrates that coming into contact with music at a very early age has a significant influence on future musical development. PentameroneMUZIEKVAKANTIE TIJDENS LAUS POLYPHONIAE Antverpia, meer dan zeshonderd jaar geleden. De Schelde stroomt al lang naar zee, de zon draait nog rond de aarde. In grote delen van Europa woedt de pest, een vreselijke ziekte waarvan Antverpia grotendeels gespaard blijft. In Firenze schrijft Boccaccio zijn Decamerone. Over jongeren die de zwarte dood ontvluchten. Zij ontmoeten elkaar elke dag op een plek buiten de stad, en vullen er de tijd met vermakelijke verhalen. Ook hier, in de Ridder Steghe, komen elke dag blijgemutste kinderen en jongeren samen. Hun tijd delen zij in volgens een strak ritueel. Zij vertellen elkaar verhalen, musiceren en dansen. Elke dag eindigt met een lied. Vijf dagen lang. Pentamerone.Er zijn drie leeftijdsgroepen: 6-9 jaar, 10-12 jaar, 13-16 jaar, met of zonder muzikale voorkennis. Wie een instru-ment bespeelt, kan dit meebrengen (alle instrumenten welkom).

The plague is raging across large areas of Europe: a terrible disease which, luckily, has not hit Antverpia hard. In Florence, Boccaccio is writing The Decameron: a book about young people fleeing the Black Death. They meet up every day at a place outside the city, entertaining themselves with stories to pass the time. Here, too, in the Ridder Steghe, enthusiastic children and young people come together every day. They structure their time according to a strict ritual. They tell stories, make music and dance. Tijdens de repetities word je gecoacht door componisten Bram Van Camp, Mathias Coppens en Hanne Deneire. Op zondag 12 februari 2017 worden de geselecteerde composities door het HERMESensemble uitgevoerd o.l.v. Benjamin Haemhouts op het podium van AMUZ. Van het concert wordt ook een opname gemaakt.

TARIEVEN, REDUCTIES & VOORDEELFORMULES

TARIEVENElke concertpagina vermeldt de standaard- en reductieprijzen, exclusief eventuele reservatie- of verzendkosten. Op het bestelformulier vindt u een overzicht van alle ticket- en abonnementsprijzen. In de brochure en op het bestelformulier vallen (druk)fouten niet volledig uit te sluiten. AMUZ spant zich in om eventuele fouten zo snel mogelijk recht te zetten. De vermeldingen op de website hebben voorrang op de gedrukte brochure.

REDUCTIESAMUZ werkt steeds met genummerde zitplaatsen, tenzij anders vermeld. Genummerde zaalopstellin-gen hebben meestal twee prijscategorieën. Stoelen in de tweede categorie hebben een beperkte zichtbaarheid. Binnen elke categorie geldt een reductietarief voor -26/65+, lerarenkaart, Davids-fonds Cultuurkaart, VT-statuut en groepen vanaf 10 personen. Klanten die een reductietarief genieten, moeten hun bewijs daarvoor tonen bij de ticketcon-trole aan de inkom van de zaal. Wie jonger is dan 19 jaar, betaalt slechts € 5 per ticket. Wie studeert aan een Antwerpse hogeschool of universiteit, kan gebruikmaken van de cultuurcheque. Personen met een VT-statuut kunnen een bijzondere korting genieten. Gelieve contact op te nemen met de ticketbalie voor bijkomende info.

VOORDEELFORMULES

A-kaartDe A-kaart is de spaar- en voordeelkaart van de stad Antwerpen. Met uw A-kaart kan u in AMUZ een punt sparen bij deelname aan een activiteit. Tien punten (= 1 bon) geven recht op een korting van € 2 op een AMUZ-concert. Tijdelijke acties worden aangekon-digd via de nieuwsbrief van de A-kaart. Voor € 3 heeft u al een A-kaart. U kan de kaart op verschil-lende locaties in de stad aankopen, ook in AMUZ. Surf naar a-kaart.antwerpen.be voor alle informatie.

Podiumhopper Wie in AMUZ een abonnement koopt, krijgt boven op ons geijkte kortingstarief een podiumhopper ter waarde van € 20 cadeau. Met deze kaart krijgt u een eenmalige korting van € 5 in de Filharmonie, Opera Vlaanderen, Ballet Vlaanderen en in het Toneelhuis. AMUZ-introHet jongerenabonnement AMUZ-intro laat jongeren t.e.m. 26 jaar proeven van de seizoensconcerten. Een kaart kost € 25 en biedt de mogelijkheid 5 concerten naar keuze bij te wonen. RATES, REDUCTIONS & SPECIAL OFFERS

RATESThe standard and discount ticket prices, excluding booking or postage fees, are listed on each concert page. You will find a list of all the ticket prices and the season ticket prices on the order form at the back of the brochure. Prices in the brochure and on the order form may be subject to change due to possible mistakes or printing errors. AMUZ makes every effort to correct any errors as soon as possible. The prices stated on the website take precedence over those in the printed brochure. Visitors eligible for a reduction must show their reduction card when the tickets are checked at the entrance to the hall.

REDUCTIONSAMUZ always uses numbered seats, unless stated otherwise. There are usually two categories of numbered seats. Both of these categories have reduced rates for -25/65+, holders of a teacher’s card, Davidsfonds culture card, people who receive benefits and groups of 10 or more people. Visitors eligible for a reduction must show their reduction card at the entrance to the concert hall. Young people under the age of 19 only pay € 5. Students in higher education in Antwerp can use a culture voucher.

SPECIAL OFFERS

A-kaartThe “A-kaart” is the discount and benefit card of the City of Antwerp. Every time you attend an event in AMUZ you can add a point to your card. Ten points entitle you to a discount of € 2 on your ticket to an AMUZ concert. Temporary promotions are announced in the A-kaart newsletter. The card itself costs € 3. There are several places where you can obtain an A-kaart. See a-kaart.antwerpen.be for further information.

PodiumhopperIf you buy a season ticket in AMUZ you will receive a “Podiumhopper” worth € 20. This card entitles you to a once-off reduction of € 5 for tickets to the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the Flemish Opera, the Royal Ballet Flanders and the Toneelhuis. AMUZ-introThe AMUZ-intro youth season ticket allows young people aged 26 and under get a taste of this season’s concerts. The ticket costs € 25 and allows you to attend five concerts of your choice. RESERVATIE- EN VERZENDKOSTEN

AMUZ rekent € 2 kosten aan per reservatie van één of meerdere tickets, kosten die niet inbegrepen zijn bij de vermelde ticketprijzen. Bij aankoop van tickets aan de ticketbalie zonder voorafgaande reservering, worden deze kosten niet aangerekend. Wilt u de tickets per post ontvangen, dan rekenen wij € 1 verzendkosten aan. Kiest u voor zelf te printen e-tickets, dan betaalt u deze kosten niet.

TERUGNAME TICKETSTickets kunnen worden geruild tot 7 dagen voor het concert waarvoor ze werden gekocht. Dit kan enkel binnen het seizoen 16|17. Hiervoor worden € 2 transactiekosten aangerekend per geruild ticket. Ruilen kan enkel tijdens de reguliere openingsuren van de ticketbalie: maandag-vrijdag 12.00-17.00. Tickets worden niet terugbetaald, dit geldt ook voor niet-gebruikte tickets. Er wordt geen cadeaubon in ruil gegeven.

AMUZ charges € 2 for the reservation of one or more tickets, costs that are not included in the ticket prices mentioned. These costs do not apply to tickets bought at the ticket office without prior reservation. If you want to receive the tickets by mail, we charge € 1 postage costs. You can also opt to print e-tickets yourself without charge.

TICKET EXCHANGETickets can be exchanged until seven days before the concert for which they were bought. This incurs a transaction fee of € 2. Exchanges are possible only during the regular opening hours of the box office: MON-FRI 12.00-17.00. No refunds are given, even for tickets that have not been used.

AbonnementenU kan nu uw abonnement kiezen en samenstellen. Kies eerst hoeveel identieke abonnementen u wil bestellen en tegen welk tarief. Of u recht heeft op het reductietarief, leest u bij ‘Tarieven, reducties en voordeelformules’. Wil u verschillende abon-nementen bestellen, dan geeft u ze één na één in. Klik dan in het winkelmandje telkens op GA DOOR MET WINKELEN. Selecteer dan de concerten die u wil bijwonen door bij de betreffende vakjes SELECTEER aan te vinken. Hebt u alle gekozen concerten aangevinkt, klik dan bovenaan op SELECTEER STOELEN om verder te gaan. Nu krijgt u voor elk concert de zaalplattegrond te zien. Klik eerst bovenaan op de naam van het concert en kies vervolgens uw plaats(en) in de zaal (in het geval van een ongenummerde zaal geeft u het aantal in). Als u dit voor elk van de gekozen concerten heeft gedaan, klikt u op BESTEL.

3. Overloop uw bestellingNu komt u in uw winkelmandje terecht. Hier ziet u een overzicht van wat u heeft besteld. Uw keuze wordt 60 minuten vastgehouden, zodat u voldoende tijd heeft om de volledige bestelling af te ronden. U kan uw bestelling nog bewerken (als u iets wil veranderen), u kan doorgaan met winkelen (als u nog tickets of abonnementen wil kopen) of u kan verder gaan naar de betaalpagina.

4. Log in of registreerOm uw tickets te kunnen betalen en de bestelling af te ronden, moet u eerst inloggen. Als u al over een login beschikt, kan u gewoon inloggen en verder gaan. Als u nog geen login heeft, moet u zich eerst registreren. Vul daarvoor uw gegevens in de voorziene velden op de pagina. Kies op deze pagina ook hoe u uw tickets wil ontvangen. U heeft de keuze om ze per post te ontvangen (+ € 1) of om zelf e-tickets te printen na aankoop. Gelieve uw login en paswoord te bewaren.

5. Betaal uw tickets en druk ze zelf af of ontvang ze per post Nu u ingelogd bent, kan u uw tickets betalen. Kies een betaalmethode: betaling met geschenk-bon, online betaling met kaart of overschrijving (mogelijk tot één week voor het concert) en rond de betaling af. Uw tickets zullen u na ontvangst van betaling per post of via mail (e-tickets) worden toegestuurd.

Click on the name of the concert at the top and then select your seat(s) in the hall (if the hall has unnumbered seats, simply indicate the number of seats you require). When you have done this for all the concerts of your choice, click ORDER.

3. Check your order Now you will be taken to your shopping cart and be shown an overview of your order. Your shopping cart will expire after 60 minutes, giving you sufficient time to complete your order. You can still edit your order (if you wish to change something), continue shopping (if you wish to purchase more tickets or season tickets) or proceed to the payment page.

4. Log in or register You need to log in to pay for your tickets and complete your order. If you already have a login then log in and continue. If you do not have a login yet then you will need to register first. Please enter your details in the boxes displayed on the page. Do not forget to select how you wish to receive your tickets. You can receive them by post (+ € 1) or print e-tickets yourself after completing your purchase. Please save your login and password.
