In zijn lezing zal hij ingaan op de oorsprong, actuele thema's en toekomstperspectieven
van de kritische gerontologie.
The lecture will be divided into three main parts; first, the main phases in the study of ageing
- from the mid-twentieth to the early twenty-first century- will be reviewed. Second, the
lecture will examine the dominant strands in critical gerontology, namely: political economy,
cumulative advantage/disadvantage theory, humanistic perspectives and cultural gerontology.
Finally, the lecture will address key issues facing studies in ageing at the present time,
notably those dealing with relationships between generations and questions relating to the
impact of globalisation on the welfare state and related institutions.

verhouding tot de systeemwereld.
In his lecture he will focus on concepts of time and Habermas's concept of the life world in
relation to the systems world.

Chris Phillipson, PhD, is Professor of Applied Social Studies and Social Gerontology, at the
University of Keele, UK. He received his Ph.D from Durham University in 1977. Chris established
the Department of Applied Social Studies and Social Work at Keele in 1988 and headed the
Department until 1996. He has been Dean of Research for the Faculty of Social Sciences and
served as a Pro- Vice Chancellor for the University (2005-2009). He was also founding Director
(1986-1997) of the Centre for Social Gerontology at Keele and former President of the British
Society of Gerontology. His research interests have focused on family and community life in old
age, problems of social exclusion, and issues relating to urbanisation and migration. He has
published extensively on age-related matters and his books include:
- Reconstructing old age/ (Sage, 1998)
- Social theory and social ageing/ (with Carroll Estes and Simon Biggs)
- McGraw-Hill, 2003), /Social networks and social/ /exclusion/ (co-edited, 2004), Ageing,
globalisation and inequality/ (co-edited, Baywood,2006)
- Futures of old age/ (co-edited, Sage, 2006).
- He is the co-editor (with Dale Dannefer) of the forthcoming Sage /Handbook of Social
Gerontology

Jan Baars is Hoogleraar in de Interpretatieve Gerontologie aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek te
Utrecht. Vanuit zijn academische achtergrond in de wijsbegeerte en de sociale wetenschappen
heeft hij een omvangrijk oeuvre gepubliceerd over ouder worden en leven in de tijd. Zijn meeste
recente publicatie is een overzicht van filosofische teksten over ouder worden, vanaf de Pre-
Socraten tot hedendaagse denkers, geredigeerd samen met Joep Dohmen: "De Kunst van het
Ouder Worden" (480 pp.,Amsterdam: Ambo, Maart 2010 - zie ook http://www.janbaars.nl.)
Jan Baars is Professor of Interpretive Gerontology at the University for Humanistics in Utrecht, The
Netherlands. From his academic background in Philosophy and Social Theory he has written
extensively about aging and living in time. His most recent publication is a collection of
philosophical texts about aging, from Pre-Socratics to contemporary thinkers, co-edited with Joep
