What’s New This Year?

LATE-START FRIDAYSClasses will start approximately one hour later each Friday this year. The bus schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the late arrival. During the late start on Fridays, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. our teachers and staff will be participating in professional development, which will consist of Understanding by Design Curriculum Framework, collaborative conversa-tions on teaching and learning, diver-sity training, as well as community building. Period 1 (E-Period) will begin at 8:35 a.m., and Period 2 will begin at 9:30 a.m. on all Fridays this year.

TRAFFIC FLOWThe Fine Arts Expansion Project is now underway at the South Building! Your patience will be greatly appreciated as the construction will impact pick-up and drop-off locations. Parents will need to use Door 12 when students are dropped off in the morning and/or picked up in the afternoon at the South Building. The front driveway, off of Kedzie Avenue, will be limited to bus traffic only. (See map below.)

2019-20 school year begins as H-F’s 60th year of education

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year at Homewood-Flossmoor Communi-ty High School! This is our 60th year of educating teens in District 233.

Last year, we worked with our current students, parents and staff members to develop a list of Transfer Goals — a list of skills that Viking students will carry with them once they graduate from H-F. Our school has committed to guid-ing students with these ideals in mind:

AFFIRMATION & ACCEPTANCE — A graduate from H-F High School willvalue diversity, be inclusive, and interact positively, empathetically, and respectfully with all people in order to prosper in a global society.

COMMUNICATION — A graduate from H-F High School will communicateeffectively, based on purpose, task and audience.

COLLABORATION — A graduate from H-F High School will collaborativelyand respectfully work with — and learn from — others in a variety of situa-tions, appreciating and inviting diverse perspectives.

RESPONSIBILITY TO SELF & OTHERS — A graduate from H-F High Schoolwill govern oneself in a variety of situations, advocate for self and others, and engage in social responsibility.

CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVE THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING — A graduate from H-F High School will think critically and creatively to develop innovative solutions in an ever-changing world.

MANIFESTING CHARACTER — A graduate from H-F High Schoolwill adapt to evolving circumstances, embrace and lead change while demonstrating resilience.

As you can see, there are days full of learning ahead in this 60th year. Please stay informed by reading your weekly H-F FYI enewsletter and follow H-F on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@HFHS59) for daily news updates. Have a great year!O

All-School Test Day: Oct. 16H-F periodically administers standard-ized exams in order to better understand individual growth, school-wide trends, and to help prepare students for college-en-trance exams. On Wednesday, Oct. 16, all freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take the tests noted below. Please note that this is an early-dismissal day with students excused at 1:20 p.m. There is also no first period. Check-in and seating for testing will begin at 8:20 a.m.

c FRESHMEN will take the PSAT 8/9 test.

c SOPHOMORES will take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT).

c JUNIORS will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The PSAT is a Preliminary SAT exam and — like Advanced Placement exams — is administered by the College Board. H-F uses the PSAT to determine AP potential. This test is also the qualification test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

c SENIORS are not required to attend school on this day. They are invited to use this day to explore colleges and universities, either through in-person visits or online through Naviance. The H-F Guidance Department will be offering guided trips to select colleges. Call 708-335-5612 for tour informa-tion.

For more information about testing, please contact the Assessment Depart-ment at 708-335-5584.
