STAROOT VACANCIES

Editor’s pick of the week:

June is celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa, with a specific focus on 16 June, which is also known as Youth Day. Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the 16 June 1976 uprising in Soweto.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprisings, and in honour of this, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has developed a national pro-gramme under the theme of “Youth Action for Economic Freedom in Our Lifetime”.

On 16 June 1976, more than 15 000 stu-dents gathered at Orlando West Secondary School with the intention of participating in a peaceful march to the nearby Orlando Sta-dium. The demonstration had been planned in protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction at schools.

However, the police and armed forces re-sponded to the protest violently and the first fatality of the day was Hector Pieter-son, a 12-year-old pupil who was shot by the police. It is believed that 175 others were also killed that day.

This violent backlash to what was meant to be a peaceful march caught the attention of the international community. After this event, many countries imposed sanctions on South Africa in an attempt to force the apartheid government to ease its repressive rule.

On that day the government and the police were caught off guard, when the simmer-ing bubble of anger of schoolchildren finally burst, releasing an intensity of emotion that the police controlled in the only manner they knew how: with ruthless aggression. SA History Online puts the number of dead at 200, far higher than the official figure of 23.

A City of Johannesburg business initiative, Jozi: My Beginning, announced the final 17 ventures selected from over 2 000 entrants to receive a financial helping hand from the city. It will allow them to grow and compete in the marketplace, while creating jobs and boosting the economy.

The initiative forms part of the Jozi@Work program that is setting aside R50-million to fund local talent with innovative business ideas that can benefit the public and enrich the lives of local residents. Announcing the results on 20 April 2016, Johannesburg mayor Mpho Parks Tau congratulated the 17 businesses selected to develop its ideas fur-ther, adding how vital it was for the businesses to provide local solutions to local problems, saying it should not always be on the shoulders of the municipality.

The mayor also noted the need for these businesses to be able to compete successfully nationally and internationally, saying “local solutions to lo-cal problems help us grow enterprises into not only locally competitive enterprises but into internationally competitive enterprises”.

Two of the finalists have developed unique ideas that show promise for servicing the community. One addresses the challenges of shack fire pre-vention and the other tries to solve the issue of rubbish collection and recycling.

Fireproofing informal settlementsJonathan Frost and Peter Barthel spent years developing a viable solution to the problem of shack fires in and around the city. Through trial and error tests, the pair came up with a safe chemical applicant that can be used to curb the spread of fires in any home. “[The concept is] a fire-proofing material that you can apply onto any structure for example glass [or] metal surfaces for your informal settlements. We want to prevent the spread of fire from the source hence securing the rest of the dwellings surrounding them so that they don’t get damaged,” Frost told news website, News24.

According to Frost, the applicant can be applied to the inside of an informal home made up of timber frames and metal parts. “The chemicals will reduce the burn properties of wood and wood products and will give shack dwellers a chance to either douse the fire or vacate the shack in time. It will also prevent spreading of fires to adjacent shacks,” Frost said. The product is currently undergoing various health and safety tests, but the outcome for the idea looks positive. Considering the product’s selec-tion for Jozi: My Beginning, Frost said “we’re very privileged to have been chosen. I’m looking forward to developing the product fully”. A fresh take on trash collectionAbomakgereza, a recycling idea with a difference, has been developed by Soweto entrepreneur Sifiso Ngobese, who looked at improving safety of “recycling riders” – those who sift through rubbish to collect and sell recyclables. “The biggest problem that the [riders] face on a regular basis is that the trolleys they use break down easily and have poor visibility at night,” Ngobese said about the genesis of the idea. Ngobese and his team designed and built a safer, roadworthy and more functional trolley that riders could use to collect, as well generate some extra income. To finance the manufacturing, Ngobese sold advertising space on the trolleys, “it doubles up as a mobile billboard where companies can advertise their brand and add content on the trolley,” he explained, adding that 10% of all business profits for the companies generated from the advertising will be distributed to the trolley riders, in the form of food, financial support and anything else the recyclers may need. The company is beginning to create a database of registered, vetted riders that could be accessed by both potential advertisers as well as the mu-nicipality. The system can track the identities and number of riders operating in a specific area, as well as the amount of recycling items the trolleys pick up.

The project currently has 40 recycling riders registered on its database. With the help of the Jozi: My Beginning initiative, Ngobese would like to increase that number to 100.The idea has also developed into waste management services for special events, such as the 702 Walk The Talk race in 2015 which saw recyclers using their trolleys to tidy up after the event. Ngobese hopes the Abomakgereza business concept, now with backing from the City of Johannes-burg, can branch out into full time waste management as a supplementary service with larger waste pick up companies to serve more areas of the

Johannesburg developing entrepreneurs who make a difference.

However, since the country’s population is so young, the adoption of a more socially connected, digital retailing space where customers not only purchase products but also receive a memorable experience, is imperative for retailers looking to maintain or gain a competitive advantage over competitors, said PwC SA’s retail and consumer head John Wilkinson.

The survey, based on 19,000 respondents globally, of which about 1,000 were from SA, found that the physical store remains the retail touch point with the highest frequency, driving retailers to transform in-store experiences with differ-entiated storefronts that turn stores into ultimate shopping destinations.

Only 14% of South African online shoppers say they shop online weekly or more frequently. Preserving the strength of the traditional store, 53% of local survey respondents say they have browsed for products at a store but decided to pur-chase them online, while 73% say they have browsed online but decided to purchase products in-store.

“For the past several years, the story around retail stores was ‘showrooming’, in which stores were places to display items for online purchase,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“However, this year’s survey results show that the online shop has also become a showroom where shoppers research and compare prices for later, in-store purchases,” he said.

Mr Price, whose core market comprises 16- to 24-year-olds, is seeing online traffic significantly driving offline sales, and its market share has grown significantly since it launched its online store.

The spending capacity of older consumers is also strong in emerging economies.

“Interestingly, most of our customers under age 24 are just browsers. The vast amount of transactions are people above that age group, they’re the ones with the money. So the data tells us that the younger generation is made up of browsers and the older generations are transacting,” the fast fashion retailer said.

Similarly, Italtile’s web platform is gaining traction, with customers getting quotes on the website and then going into the store for the actual sale.

According to CFO Brandon Wood, shoppers were also doing product research in-store and then ordering through its CTM brand’s online shop.

In the PwC survey, titled Total Retail: Retailers and the Age of Disruption, 64% of respondents noted the ability to see, touch and try on the merchandise before buying as the main reason for purchasing in-store after having browsed prod-ucts online, while having the item immediately, and avoiding delivery charges were other key reasons.

The majority of South African online shoppers would be willing to pay extra for same-day delivery.

As consumers continue to develop their own approach to researching and purchasing products, both online and in-store, the environment for retailers has never been more complex. Achieving “total retail” to meet the needs of consumers requires retailers to think beyond channels.

According to PwC, retailers are faced with “waves of disruption”. One of these is the evolution of the store which is con-tinually adapting into something sleeker, more customised, and increasingly attuned to individual shoppers’ expectations of what the in-store experience should be.

Unilever-owned Magnum, launched pop-up café’s in markets like New York, Paris and Istanbul last year. The Magnum Pleasure store allows customers to create signature ice creams by choosing their own flavours and toppings. In SA, sales at the group’s Rosebank, Johannesburg outlet have risen by 12% weekly and revenue amounted to R40,000 per day. De-spite long queues and the ice cream being priced at a premium of R40, the store’s success has proved that it is not only about the product but the customer experience.

The PwC survey cites mobile technology as another wave of disruption. Although a very small piece of the pie in terms of overall retail sales, it is increasingly a critical factor in setting the stage for a purchase.

Signs that social media interactions are driving consumers to buy products and services are also becoming clearer.

Nike engages the runner community through its Nike+ platform, an application for runners, that promotes interaction with other users and the company through features such as a running blog, mapping and sharing of runs and training with a running coach.

Demographic shifts are also altering retailers’ terrain.

Digital natives — the 18-24 age cohort that is the first group of adults to have grown up with the internet — are differen-tiating shopping behaviour.

Consultancy firm EY said earlier this year that redesigning an “omnichannel” supply chain had to be a priority for con-sumer goods companies and retailers if they were to remain relevant to both the consumer and their shareholders. Omnichannel is meant to engage customers and encourage a sale, whether a consumer is in a retailer’s store or using a tablet computer, phone or personal computer.

http://www.bdlive.co.za/business/retail/2015/03/10/south-africans-still-prefer-to-shop-in-stores

SOUTH African shoppers still prefer physical stores despite significant growth in online shopping.
