PRAYER FOR MOTHERS Heavenly Father, from the beginning you have chosen to entrust the human person to mothers in a special way. We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their tenderness, care, and compassion, for their intuition and encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers this day. Keep, strengthen, and refresh them in your loving care. May they be blessed by our
open-hearted love and gratitude.
Amen.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? -
CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Question: Why are some feast days moved from a weekday to a Sunday?
Answer: Throughout Church history, the liturgical calendar has been filled with feasts, memorials, and solemnities commemorating saints and Scriptural events. Some days have greater
importance then others, and they are instated as Holy Days of Obligation, in which the faithful attend
Mass and celebrate like on Sundays.
However, the local conference of bishops has the ability to remove a day from the "obligation" list or transfer the feast to Sunday, as long as they have the prior approval of the Vatican. This is done for a variety of reasons, but in the United States, it is primarily a pastoral consideration. Decreased priest numbers leading to decreased Mass time availability, as well as work and school day complications, led to declining numbers at midweek Masses. To enable as many of the faithful as possible to participate in the liturgy, some feasts are moved from a weekday to Sunday, like the Ascension of the Lord.
Congratulations –

Guadalupe Award!

the spirit and the core beliefs of the Life Ministry.
Maria will be recognized and be honored at an award ceremony which
will take place on May 18th at the Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral,
2525 N Arrowhead Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92405, at 5:00 p.m.
and you are welcome to join in celebrating with our honoree.
Congratulations Maria!
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD Where did he go? Many times when we think of those who have died, we imagine escape from this world to a purely spiritual place. Jesus' Ascension can leave us in a place of confusion. What happens to Je-sus? And why does this matter to us?
The Ascension has been confirmed in the Creed for two millennia. In Jesus' Ascen-sion, we're invited to consider our own ulti-mate end. Regardless of death's reality now, we believe in the resurrection of the body and the reunification of body and
soul. One day, earth and heaven will meet perfectly and without end. We anticipate this "new heaven and a new earth" at every Mass and throughout the beauty, truth, and love of the Church and her members. Today, cel-
ebrate a foreshadowing of the fullness we all await!

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
Prayer is essential to Christian living and decision making. The goal of prayer is really rather simple. By prayer we can deepen our love and desire for God and increase our knowledge and understanding of God's
unconditional love for us. Prayer is not about acquiring this or that or convincing God to act on our
behalf. Prayer is the way we begin the process of change, of coming to see as God sees and realize that
God's presence permeates all God has created. If we strive to develop this life of prayer, then Jesus naturally
will become our way, our truth and our life. We can then live in the world as he would live in the world.
MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO -
ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA
ESCRITURA

TION - ENCOURAGE
DEEPER UNDER-
STANDING OF SCRIP-
TURE
May 10, 2018 The Ascension of the Lord The Ascension is an interesting feast when you think about it. We celebrate Jesus leaving! Jesus' first departure from the earth was sudden and unexpected, at least to his followers. That Good Friday departure was characterized by sorrow, confusion, and loss. This departure has a different feel: anticipation. Today's Gospel is full of the mighty deeds Jesus predicts for his followers. "In my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark's account of the Ascension is abrupt and succinct. "Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven." Jesus ascends and the Apostles go. "But they went forth and preached everywhere." The real moment likely had a bit of lag time. Realistically, the Apostles had quite the task in front of them. Can you imagine those first few moments on the hilltop after Jesus disappeared, as the Apostles met each other's eyes? "This is it. He really is gone this time. It's up to us now." Mark's abrupt transition from Ascension to action makes his meaning clear. The Ascension isn't just about Jesus. It's about us. Are we ready to go? Are we ready to be commissioned? This is the heart of the Ascension message -Jesus leaves so we can go. We might not "go into the whole world," but we all live in a corner of it. The command to "proclaim the Gospel" isn't a call for everyone to be formal preachers of the Word. We do, however, proclaim our beliefs with the way we live our lives. Do our lives proclaim Easter joy?
