CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Sheldon Watt. He has been selected to be part of the u/18 South African Indoor Cricket Squad. This squad will go through a series of selections and training with the ultimate goal of being part of the touring team, which will compete against New Zealand in September 2018. Sheldon, we wish you the best of luck. Show then true Springs Boys’ High Spirit!

DRAMA CLUB This year our Drama Club was introduced and we entered over 48 items in both the Allegretto and Teatro Eistedfodd. We look forward to the same amount of entries to the Springs Music and Arts Festival which runs through August and September 2018. Many of our learners participated under the Speech and Drama / “Redenaars” section at both the Allegretto and Teatro Eisteddfods and have done remarkable well. Several learners achieved above 95% and have therefore qualified for the Regional Eisteddfod (Allegretto) and/or to compete in the Greater Ekurhuleni Eisteddfod (Teatro) which will be held at the end of October 2018. Congratulations to all the participants and wish those who are still to perform the best of luck. The Indo School Art Competition as well as the Springs Music & Arts Festival closing date is 23 May 2018. All learners are encouraged to participate in the art, drama or speech section.

TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Sponsored by Springs Rotary Club

Every year the Springs Rotary club sponsors 5 – 10 learners from Springs Boys’ High School to take part in this amazing course.

The Youth Leadership Program is a workshop consisting of eight one- to two-hour sessions that enable young people under the age of 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. In the work-shop, young people learn valuable skills including:

Evaluating their own speaking ability

Preparing and giving speeches

Giving impromptu talks

Controlling their voice, vocabulary and gestures

Giving constructive feedback and more

How the program works

The workshops are structured for small group learning. They are presented by a coordinator who attends each meeting. Meetings generally follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting, with an announced agen-da that includes practice in parliamentary procedure, prepared and impromptu speeches and the selection of presid-ing officers.

This year’s participants are:

B Chiya gr 11, T Tsiane gr 11; S Walters gr 10; K Pamire gr 10; N Mbata gr 10; M Gwarinda gr 9, D Mahara gr 9; M Butshingi gr 9.

It is an experience that provides skills that will be beneficial to the futures of each of these learners. May they grow and develop into magnificent speakers.

Thank you to Springs Rotary Club for the continued support of SBHS. It is greatly appreciated.

SBHS BRASS BAND The Brass Band kicked off early this year with parades and competitions. As was expected our boys did us proud. The first parade for the Striders Marathon in February was a success, as the boys played music for the weary runners. All the athletes and supporters were impressed by the quality of music that our boys played on the day. The second parade was in April, where the boys played at the annual Birchwood Marathon, where our boys impressed the crowds once again. On 5 May 2018, our boys took part in the Teartro Arti Eisteddfod, where we competed in two sections - namely Concert Band where our boys received 92% (A++) and Percussion where they received 95% (A+++). We are very proud of our boys and look forward to the rest of the year. Dates to remember! Band Concert - 27 July 2018 Band Tattoo - 18 August 2018 National Band Competition - 5 & 6 October 2018.
