The lecture will be held at the KIVI building, Prinsessegracht 23, The Hague. Rutger Gras of Schiumberger, GeoQuest will speak about: The Petroleum Geoiogy of the Eastern Sirte Basin ". The speaker has provided the following abstract: The Sarir or Nubian sandstone is the principal reservoir for giant oil accumulations in the eastern Sirte Basin in Libya. This sandstone constitutes a non-marine, intra- continental clastic syn-rift sequence deposited during the Late Jurassic-Early . has been revievsed, with emphasis on the trap geometries in relation to the structural evolution of the basin. Relative to the North Sea the prolific Sirte basin is in an immature stage of exploration. The most recent phase of exploration, utilising 3D seismic techniques, revealed a complex structural development. The trap geometries are often related to E- W trending, basement-controlled fault sy sterns, oblique to the dominant NW-SE Sirte basin trend. The E-W trending fault systems are frequently developed in en-echelon patterns, as a result of the NW-SE trending extension of the Sirte Basin superimposed upon the pre-existing infrastructure. These fault systems were active during deposition of the Sarir sandstone; giving rise to structural as well as combined structural- stratigraphic traps. An increased understanding of the trap architecture has led to re- evaluation of older fields, as well as new discoveries and prospects. Permission to present this paper by Arabian Gul/OU Company (Benghazi, Libya) and Schiumberger GeoQuest (Paris) is gratefully acknowledged._

IN MEMORIAM Prof.Drs. F. Walter

Our Member Frans Walter died on July 15th, after a sudden illness, at the age of 63. Frans Walterstarted his carrier at TNO, where, as director, hè expanded the Dienst Grondwaterverkenning from ahandful of people to an international institute of more than 150 persons that now carries outgeological research on water and hydrocarbons. This achievement, the spin-off of a number Dutchresearch groups and consultancies and the independence given to the Dutch domestic industry onforeign expertise, lay close to his heart. After his departure from TNO hè was appointed asProfessor of Geothermal Energy at the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at theUniversity of Technology at Delft. In the short time hè worked there, several students finished theirMasters in geothermics under his tutelage. He was an esteemed guest at our monthly PGK meetingsat the KIVI building. Many of us knew him from his lecture last November, where hè promotedGeothermal energy for the Netherlands. He inspired the PGK to have a joint geothermal/oilfieldexcursion to Pechelbronn/Elsass at the end of May, which hè unfortunately could not attend. Aboveall Prof. Walter will remain in our thoughts as a very involved researcher/manager who tried toconvince people v.'ith a human approach to his opii ion.

MEMBERS NEWSWe have received applications for membership from Ir. Peter C. Montijn a geothermalengineer from TNO Institute of Applied Geoscience, Mr. R.W.Berendsen from GeoLogic inAlphen a/d Rijn, Mr. Paul F. Jacobs of Dietsman International N.V.in Antwerp., JaquesHaagoort, Ewout Biezen, Barry Dros and An van Bockstaele all petroleum engineerswith Hagoort Associates B.V. If no objections are received by the end of the next meeting theywill automatically be elected members of the society.

Do any member have a current address for the following missing members: Mr. P.F. Evansand Mr. T.B.G. De Natris.

I would like to welcome members back after the surnmer break. I hope everyone found itrelaxing and/or profitable. In this bumper edition of the newsletter I would like to bringmembers attention to the following Information about a PGK sanctioned field trip to Oman. Those interested are encouraged to fïll in the form as soon as possible. This field trip will nottake the place of our annual field seminar but will run parallel with our existing programme.

We now have officially 395 members. The 400th member of our society will, officially, receivea PGK tie and a bottle of wine, as will the member that recruited him or her. The 400th memberwill be the newest member added to the list that totals 400 (remember we also have cancellationsof members). Applications received on the same day will be sorted in chronological order. Iencourage all members to contact as many potential new members as soon as possible. So farwe have had a rather spirited attempt on the prize by Hagoort Associates unfortunately this waspredated by a number of cancellations. Inasmuch as they have made the best attempt to date theywill be awarded the prize at the end of 1996 if the 400th member is not reached.

Our records have been updated up to September l, 1996. Please remit ƒ25 for each year due, into one of the accounts mentioned above AS AP. Records are currently being updated so membersshould not be too alarmed if their labels do not reflect the latest payments. RECORD UPDATE & MEMBERSHIP SURVEYThis months newsletter contains a number of forms that we would appreciate you filling in andre turning.

Will all members of the society who have been a member for over two years please fïll in the recordsupdate form. Since our inception the records have undergone 3 mutations and change of format. Asa result our membership data base contains some important omissions while professional andbusiness affiliations and telephone numbers are somewhat out of date. This form is just a copy ofthe form sent to new applicants. All data on this form will treated in strictest confidence.

I also encourage as many members as possible to find the time to fill in our membership surveyform. We are undertaking this survey (which is anonymous) in order to get a better feel for theneeds of you, the members with respect to the facilities offered by the PGK. We also wish to use itto gain an insight into the demographic trends in employment and industry you our members andyour opinions on the future of petroleum geology inn the Netherlands. Not only will thisinformation help us with our approach to sponsors, it will also help us better formulate and expressthe oninions of our roerobership to eovernm.ent fnH the penera! public We hope to publish theresults of the survey in either the December or January newsletter.

BOOK DELIVERIESThe secretary has now distributed the remaining copies of "The Geology of Gas and Oil Under theNetherlands". All money should now have been returned the accounts concerned. If there are anyproblems please contact the secretary.

PGK WHISKY GLASSTo coincide with the lecture of Nigel Trewin on the Stratigraphy of Malt Whisky it was decided toenquire into the possibility of commissioning a special whisky glass for the occasion. After muchsampling (unfortunately for the secretary, of glass and not whisky) a design has been found onwhich we will etch the PGK logo. We have gone for a traditional strait 29 cl whisky tumbler with a2cm thick base in which sits a bubble. An example of the glass will be on display at the nextmeeting. We require a minimum order of 50 glasses and the tumbler will retail for -ƒ10 per glass. The glass, as with our tie, is also ideally suitable for presents and business gifts. If you areinterested please fill in the following form. The deadline for ordering is November Ist.
