Greetings,

Hope you are all faring well during these very challenging times. Each day I tell myself this too shall pass, but darn it I can’t wait for this craziness to pass. I do know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have some positive news to share with you. Although the Center remains closed the Twp. Parks have reopened, which includes our Senior Activity Garden out back of the building.

After more than 10 years Estelle Wilson is no longer overseeing Meals on Wheels and the congregate lunch program at our Center. We wish her well, and thank her for her service.

Jim Foley, our 2019 Volunteer of the Year has been overseeing the program since mid-March and has ensured there are no interruptions in the delivery of the M.O.W. ‘s each week.

I am hearing a lot of positive feedback about outdoor programming, and I plan to have our Senior Activity Garden available for optional programming for the classes that would like to meet outdoors when the Center is approved to safely reopen. In the meantime I’m so happy to hear from those of you who have been able to reorganize/revamp your classes to be able to offer activities in a safe manner during this time. Brenda Stewart is offering outdoor Tai Chi, Maxie Jo Haase is offering outdoor exercise, and both classes are held at Quirk Park. Elaine Lewis is in the process of organizing the Bible study group to meet outdoors as well. I just spoke with Sissel Bridges and she informed me she would like to offer outdoor chair massage when the Center reopens. Challenging times indeed but, I am so grateful to be able to work with like-minded instructors who are not only passionate about what they do, but even more so about the best interest of the participants.

In an effort to keep you in the loop please be sure your contact information at the Center is up to date, including email and phone number. For updates on Senior Center information visit the township website at: www.vanburen-mi.org or call the Center office at (734) 699-8918.

The Center now has the capability of sending mass messages by phone to all members or to select groups. Members can quickly be informed of any new developments at the Center. No word yet on the reopening of the Center, but I can’t wait for the day I am able to share the news of the Center reopening and approval of outdoor programming.

Thank you in advance for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this unsettling time. Take good care, can’t wait to see all of you!!

Lynette

May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right. A quote by Peter Marshall

Coronavirus Disease(Covid-19) Steps to Prevent Illness from the CDC Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person within 6 feet of one another. Also through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Take steps to protect yourself: Clean your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid close contact.

Take steps to protect others: Stay home if you are sick. Cover Coughs and sneezes. Wear a facemask if you are sick.

Clean and disinfect: To disinfect, most common EPA-registered household disinfectants will work. Use disinfectants appropriate for the surface. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.

Diluting your household bleach: To make a bleach solution mix: 5 tablespoons or 1/3rd cup bleach per gallon of water. or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water.

Alcohol Solutions: Ensure solution has at least 70% alcohol.

What’s in this Watermelon Salad?

This watermelon salad recipe is truly easy to make and it’s one of the best watermelon recipes out there. It’s just a matter of chopping a few ingredients and throwing them together on a platter. A fantastic accessory for summer cookouts and potlucks. But because it’s so simple, the quality of the ingredients is key. You’ve got to have a super ripe watermelon and high quality feta cheese to make this one taste like 1 million bucks. This post was created in partnership with ALDI.

Ingredients:

Ripe watermelon Feta cheese crumbles Fresh basil Lemon Baby or English cucumber (or peel a standard cucumber)
