On a flat surface verify thesole is within .003-.004,be sure to have the ironretracted and undercutting pressure.

I have been working wood since my early childhood. On my mothers side my grandfather and greatgrandfather were both carpenters. I knew them both and had the opportunity to work with Gramp. My father was an industrial arts teacher turned carpenter so woodworking was definitely in myblood. During my boyhood I was always building something, from boats to gun handles and fromgo-carts to wooden bowls. Not only was I fascinated with wood but my quest for perfection nearlydrove my father crazy.

During my formal training I had the good fortune of working for a short time with MunroeRobinson. Munroe gave me a great understanding of hand planning and instilled in me the questfor the perfectly sharpened edge, a great craftsman and excellent teacher. I also had the advantageof meeting and befriending David Charlesworth. David introduced me to what I believe is thesmartest technique I have ever learned about sharpening. Davids woodworking precision is

legendary! I spent several years as an assistant to Dr Dale L. Nish, it was Dale who taught me thefoundation of true craftsmanship, without this my career would not have been the same. WhatI teach you in this DVD is a collection of techniques I have learned from these and other greatcraftsman. I feel honored to be able to pass these on to you and I bid you to do the same. The nextgeneration of woodworkers depends on it. I hope thru this DVD you come to enjoy the mostpleasurable woodworking process there is, hand planning. All the best.

Carefully flatten the rearcontact point of the frogby moving it side to sidealong the edge of your

    reference surface.

    Front points done.

Front contact points arebest done by pulling thefrog towards you, checkafter each stroke.

Adhere sand paper to thethree contact points andtrim the excess.

    These front contact pointsare done.

Using the sand paper onthe frog contact points, carefully sand the matingsurfaces on the plane body.

    Reassemble the plane.

Use tape to mark theamount needed to file.

Hold the blade in place todetermine how much toopen the throat/mouth.

Keep the filed surfaceperpendicular to the soleor slightly angled towardthe front knob.

The plane needs to beunder normal lever captension when its flattened.Keep the blade retracted.

Fine tune the throatopening to be parallelto the blade.

Use the front knob andthe rear tote to apply evendownward pressure, try tokeep the force centered.

Flatten at least 85% of thesole and all of the criticalarea forward of mouth.

Move the plane forwardand back and side toside with moderatedownward force.

Finish the sole with a 400grit polish.

Hone the blade at 29degrees to create thesecondary bevel on the1k stone. The AngleTrainercan help you tosharpen freehand.

    Keep your stones flat with

medium grit wet/drypaper on a float glass orgranite reference surface, remember flat = sharp.

Check for a bur that goescorner to corner to verifythe job on the 1k stoneis completed.

The tertiary bevel iscreated at 31 degreeson 8k stone.

Apply pressure for threeseconds on each corner tofeather the edges. Thishelps prevent the bladecorners from leavingplane tracks.

Work the tertiary bevel forabout 10 seconds.

Hold the steel rule (lessthan 1 mm thick) flushwith the edge of thefinish stone.

Secure the chipbreakerfirmly to the blade andabout 1/16" back from thecutting edge.

The ruler elevates theblade about 1 degree to

create a time saving backbevel. Move the bladeback and forth stayingwithin 1/4" of the edgeof the 8k stone.

Using the lateral adjust-ment lever set the bladeedge parallel to theplane sole.

Turn on your favoritemusic and relax!

Fully retract the bladebefore you start to plane, then gradually advanceit once the plane is in

motion. Watch wherethe shaving first appearsand make any necessaryadjustments with thelateral adjustment lever. The goal is a full width andeven thickness shaving.
