Dear Parents/Carers and Pupils. On behalf of the Governors, staff and current pupils of Rhosymedre Community Primary School I warmly welcome you, your child and your family to our school and the Rhosymedre Family.

Parents and Carers, we understand that your child is about to take one of the most important steps of young their lives and we will try our best to ensure that at Rhosymedre we make them feel secure, valued and safe throughout their time with us. We hope to ignite your child’s inner adventurer and problem solver and develop their ability to question. At every stage of their learning we will provide activities and experiences that will help them to develop the skills of making decisions and taking responsibility for their actions. We will be making this journey with your child and will learn with them, so that we are providing the best experiences and education possible.

We will set and expect high standards of behaviour and discipline. All the children will be encouraged to do their best in a caring and supportive environment.

We will also endeavour to build relationships with you that are honest, respectful and caring. Children need to know that they are part of a partnership, which includes themselves, their parents and teachers. You, as parents are so important to this process. Only by working together can we support our children to do their best.

I hope this prospectus gives you the information you need about the school, but if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me, I look forward to working with you.

Yours Sincerely,

Mrs E Edwards

Admissions

The Local Education Authority are responsible for all admissions to Rhosymedre Community Primary School. Application forms are available on line at www.wrexham.go.uk. Parents are welcome to visit the school by prior arrangement.

In addition, we ask every parent to complete a school information form for his or her children. This provides us with vital information about your child and if circumstances change please let us know as soon as possible. Parents wishing to transfer between schools need to collect a form from Lord Street in Wrexham town centre.

All pupils are welcome and are treated equally irrespective of any disability. The school will make every reasonable effort to meet particular needs, taking any steps necessary to prevent disabled pupils from being treated less favourably than others.

There is a Special Educational Needs Unit attached to the school and pupils are encouraged to take a full part in the daily life of the school. However, admission to this unit is decided by the Local Education Authority not the governors or Headteacher.

Admission to Nursery

Children are admitted to Nursery in the September following their 3rd birthday. Children attend part time, mornings only. We believe that children who attend regularly in Nursery develop and reinforce skills which ensure a good foundation for later learning.

There is also the opportunity for Nursery pupils to attend the Rising 4s provision in the afternoons in an adjacent setting. For more information about Playgroup, please contact

Ms S Evans at school.

Please note: attendance at our Nursery does not automatically guarantee admission to Reception and is subject to an application and admissions process.

If this is a condition requiring specific management and awareness on a regular basis, such as severe asthma or diabetes or alternatively, a condition which may present as an emergency such as severe allergy or epilepsy, parents should discuss this with your child‟s Class Teacher, Headteacher Mrs Edwards or the Senco Miss Davies. They will then prepare a Healthcare Plan for your child and arrange for any relevant information or training to be provided for staff. All Reception children receive a letter to request a health review and Flu vaccination with the School Nurse, which may lead to a full medical if necessary. Hearing and eye tests are conducted periodically by the School Nurse. Also the school are participating in the Dental tooth brushing campaign, therefore you will receive regular letters to consent to your child‟s teeth being screened, checked and regularly brushed in class. Class teachers can administer medication to children as long as you complete a medical request form. Prescribed medication for an on-going medical condition can also be administered if required during the school day following the completion of a written consent form.

Please note that all medicines should be clearly labelled with the name and address of the child, the dose and the times of administration of the dose, and that the child should not be

SAFEGUARDING/CHILD PROTECTION

In the event of serious concerns about a child’s welfare, physical or emotional, it is the duty of the Headteacher as the school Safeguarding Officer, to make a referral to the appropriate partner agencies in order to ensure the protection of the child.

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

It is imperative that all parents, carers provide up to date contact numbers and addresses for adults who can be contacted by the school for emergency use, welfare, progress, behaviour or attendance reasons.

The school will provide a weekly newsletter to keep you up to date with all school activities, clubs, news and if there are any issues or concerns. If you would like anything to be raised on the newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff.

Parent-Teacher Consultations Parents and carers will be formally invited into the school to review their child‟s progress a minimum of three times during the year. However, if you have any concerns during this time teachers are available before and after the school day. If you wish to meet with Mrs Edwards or Mrs Pennington anytime during the school day an appointment will need to be made by a member of staff or via the school office. If you need to discuss your child‟s progress, or to inform the teacher of any matter which may have an impact upon your child‟s progress and well-being at school, please contact the secretary, who will arrange an appointment for you. The Headteacher is always willing to discuss any matter with parents. Whilst every attempt is made to see parents on request, a telephone call to make an appointment is often advisable. Respect

We aim to respect ourselves and each other, we treat everyone professionally and with care and empathy. The governing body together with the Local Authority and Police will not tolerate abusive or violent behaviour towards their staff and will take appropriate action if it occurs. Parental Helpers in School We believe that parents and carers can bring valuable, knowledge, expertise, experience, energy and support to the school in many ways. Teaching and Learning

The Welsh Government Literacy and Numeracy Framework is at core of teaching and learning at Rhosymedre and great importance is placed on developing Oracy, Reading, Writing, Mathematical reasoning and applying Mathematical skills across the curriculum.

We also recognise the importance of wider skills and provide opportunities for pupils to:

Solve problems, think critically and apply their skills and knowledge

Assess their work and the work of others, refine and edit their work and reflect on their success

Develop their independence, both socially and academically

Work collaboratively and learn from others

Express themselves appropriately and develop empathy towards others

The Digital Competency Framework identifies key skills to be developed throughout a pupils‟ education. At Rhosymedre we aim to develop pupils‟ knowledge and skills in meaningful and challenging activities and experiences.

The school is divided into 9 classes from Nursery to Year 6 and, including a Resourced Provision for pupils with Moderate Learning Needs.

The Curriculum

Rhosymedre provides a stimulating learning environment within a caring and nurturing environment. We teach to the Foundation Phase Outcomes for pupils in the Foundation Phase and all National Curriculum subjects are taught in Key stage 2.

The Foundation Phase (Nursery to Year 2)

The Foundation Phase is about enhancing the learning experiences which enable children to be creative, imaginative and to have fun whilst involved in active learning.

Children will be given opportunities to explore the world around them and to understand how things work through engaging in relevant

Page 18: RHOSYMEDRE COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL ......RHOSYMEDRE COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL PROSPECTUS 2017-2018 2 Rhosymedre Community Primary School Park Road Rhosymedre Wrexham LL14 3EG

18

practical activities which are fun and enjoyable and relevant to their developmental stages.

The Foundation Phase places great emphasis on each child‟s experiential learning and active involvement in order to develop, whenever possible starting from child led and initiated activities.

Personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual wellbeing, so as to develop the whole child

Positive attitudes to learning so that they enjoy it and will want to continue with their education for longer

Self-esteem and self-confidence to experiment, investigate, learn new things and form new relationships

Creative, expressive and observational skills to encourage their development as individuals with different ways of responding to experiences

Activities in the outdoors where they have first-hand experience of solving real-life problems and learn about conservation and sustainability

The Foundation Phase has seven Areas of Learning, where stimulating structured active play activities can be woven into the learning experiences. The curriculum is built around these seven areas to support and encourage your child‟s personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being and development. The use of technology is planned and developed throughout all areas and a framework of literacy and numeracy underpins the whole curriculum.

Religious Education and Collective Worship throughout the school

The teaching of Religious Education encourages and develops an

awareness of religious, spiritual and moral attitudes. As parents you can

help by encouraging your child to have a caring and respectful attitude

towards others and to respect the environment.

The daily act of Collective Worship is the unifying force of the school and

encourages self-awareness and care and understanding of others and of

the world in general.

The school has no affiliation with a particular religious denomination and

follows the guidelines issued by the Local Authority. A variety of

cultures, festivals and religions are discussed and arise naturally from

project work. However, parents have the right to withdraw their child

from the act of Collective Worship or religious education lessons. In

such cases alternative arrangements can be provided following

discussion with the Headteacher.

Health and Sex Education

Sex education is firmly placed within a context of a planned and co-

ordinated programme of health education within the current context of

the personal and social provision of the school. The content and the

approach are carefully planned to match the age and stage of

development of the children.

For older children, parents are fully informed of the Sex Education

Programme and given the opportunity to see the teaching materials

before they are introduced in the classroom.

21

Under the new legislation the governors of a school have the discretion

to accept or reject requests from parents that their children be withdrawn

from any sex education to which they object. Full details regarding the

school policy on sex education is available from the school office.

Nurturing Provision and Emotianal Wellbeing

Rhosymedre welcomes learners with all types of needs. Some learners

require a personalised, flexible approach to learning that incorporates

learning experiences that complement the curriculum. Individual

learning programmes are developed to suit the variety of needs of the

pupils that access our Nurture Resource. These pupils enjoy a dynamic

creative and sensitive approach to learning and go on to success and do

extremely well. The development of children‟s emotional well-being is

extremely important to us and addressed through our personal and

social education programme and high level of care and support for all.

There are instances where individual children require additional

intervention, either short or long term, in order to address specific issues

in this area such as managing emotions, developing friendships or

coping with bereavement. We continually run programmes to support

children through difficult times of their lives. In such cases we will

contact you to discuss your child being able to access support from our

„nurturing provision‟. This may include regular time spent with Mr Jones

our Emotional Wellbeing Worker and trained Teaching Assistants

through in our Rainbow Nurture Room or outside on our Adventure

Activity Park. As a team we work closely together to support your child

to overcome any identified difficulties or issues.

HOMEWORK

At Rhosymedre Community Primary School we have studied all the of

the research published in recent years that supports the view that

children who regularly do homework achieve significantly higher results

in basic literacy and numeracy than those who don‟t. We ask for your

support in helping and encouraging the children to complete their tasks.

Home -School Reading

We strongly believe that parental involvement and encouragement in

their child‟s reading development is of vital importance. Our philosophy

is that „Reading is Fun‟ and that it is a partnership between children,

parents and teachers. We strongly urge all parents to read to, read with,

and listen to their child read regularly. Your interest, praise and

encouragement are so important.

Especially during the Foundation Phase of learning to read, children will

be given words to learn at home. It is important that they are

encouraged to learn these in an atmosphere of fun. Parents are

provided with advice and support on playing games, which encourage

children to learn effectively.

Literacy and Numeracy Tests Every Year since May 2013, all Learners in Wales in Year 2 through to Year 9 sit tests in reading and numeracy. The reading tests span two year groups:- Year 2 – Year 3 Year 4 – Year 5 Year 6 – Year 7 The tests consist of a number of passages followed by short, closed response and multiple choice type questions. There are two numeracy tests. One test assesses knowledge of Numerical Procedures such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication whilst the other, the Reasoning Test, assesses learners‟ ability to apply this knowledge to everyday problems. The tests are marked in schools and learners‟ raw scores are converted to standardised scores and age-equivalent scores. The standardised score show how your child‟s performance in the test compares to other children of the same age who have sat the test in Wales. The age-equivalent score tells you whether your child‟s reading age (or equivalent for numeracy) is equivalent to, above or below their actual age, based on how he or she performed in the test. You will receive these scores in a report from your child‟s school. The scores act as a guide to how your child is performing in reading and numeracy. School Sport

Our aim at Rhosymedre Community Primarty is to involve children in a variety of sporting activities as part of the National Curriculum and as part of the extra-curricular provision. School Sports Day is held during the Summer Term and parents and carers are invited to attend. Children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have lessons at Chirk swimming pool. Opportunity is provided for some children to participate in competitive sporting events involving children from other schools and regularly participate in tournaments at our Secondary Feeder School Ysgol Rhiwabon. All the children are challenged to achieve high personal standards in school sports and they improved their skills and confidence in football, rugby, gymnastics, athletics and dance. We are members of the Ysgol Rhiwabon Curriculum Development Centre and this provides many opportunities for staff and pupils to develop their skills and try new activities.

Physical development focuses on increasing the skill and performance of the body in the following areas: Personal, Adventurous and Physical Play and Health, Fitness and Safety.

Children are helped to use their bodies effectively by encouraging spatial awareness, balance, control and co-ordination and by developing their motor and manipulative skills.

They develop gross and fine motor skills through using large and small equipment across all Areas of Learning, indoors and outdoors.

Extra Curricular Activities

The school organises a variety of extra-curricular activities at the end of the school day. These after school clubs periodically include: Choir, Swimming, Football, Netball, Rugby, Dance, Art and Craft, Information Technology, Gardening Club and Games Club, Eco Council.Young Enterprise Gymnastics and many more..

ATTENDANCE / ABSENCE/ARRIVING LATE/APPOINMTENTS

At Rhosymedre Community Primary School we take pride in our attendance history. We strive to work

together to ensure your child is able to reach their full potential by attending school regularly and on time. Mrs Edwards and Mrs Williams will always be available to discuss any problems or issues you may have with attendance and punctuality. We are there to help and support you to give you the confidence and enable your child to maximise the opportunity and their potential. Regular attendance at punctuation in school is essential to ensure uninterrupted progress and to enable children to extend their potential. The attendance pattern for all children is monitored weekly with the school seeking to work actively with parents to ensure a regular pattern is maintained. We expect all children on roll to attend every day, when the school is in session as long as they are fit and healthy enough to do so. We do all we can to encourage the children to attend, and to put in place appropriate procedures to support this. We believe that the most important factor in promoting good attendance is development of positive attitudes towards school and learning. Poor attendance can seriously affect each child’s:-

• attainment in school

• relationships with other children and their ability to form lasting friendships

• confidence to attempt new work and work alongside others Each child’s attendance can be summarised

High attendance and punctuality is a priority at Rhosymedre Community Primary School. Attendance at school is compulsory – it is a requirement that all absences are confirmed by parents/carers and recorded in the child’s records.

We rely on parents to ensure that children are absent only for genuine reasons. It is expected for all children in Wales to achieve at least 95% attendance which means no more than 5 days missed over a whole year.

Rhosymedre Community Primary School operates a First Day Notification of Absence system. Parents/carers of pupils who are absent from school are expected to contact the school before 9.30 a.m. If there is no message left on the attendance answer machine then Mrs Williams or a member of staff will be contacting you as for the reason your child is absent. If your child has an appointment e.g. dental or medical during the school day we will require a written letter or appointment card. This is to ensure the safety of the pupils in our care and ensure that children have access to the education system that is theirs by right on a regular basis

Unexplained absences or patterns of absence and/or punctuality are constantly monitored and will be investigated by the school and our School Attendance Officer will become involved if necessary. If we do not receive any message regarding your child‟s absence you will receive an attendance absent letter when your child returns to school.

10 unauthorised sessions within 1 term will result in a warning for a Fixed Penalty Notice.

In all classes, letters are distributed to parents/carers of children whose absence falls below 90%. From this time onwards we monitor your child’s attendance records closely and work with you to achieve improved levels of attendance.

HOLIDAYS

The absence request must come from the parent with whom the child normally lives with. All requests for holiday absence must be made at least 4 weeks prior to the absence. The law does not grant parents/guardians an automatic right to take their child out of school during term time and is only approved at the Headteacher’s or Governors discretion.

WARNING: If the school refuses your request and the child is still taken out of school, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and may be used as evidence in any future legal proceedings for poor school attendance.

PUNCTUALITY

Parents are encouraged to make every effort to be punctual. It is very important that all children arrive on time as it helps to set standards and ensures that children do not miss out on important instructions and information for the day ahead.

All parents are expected to ensure that children arrive punctually at school by 8.50 a.m. in KS2 and 8.55 a.m. in Foundation Phase. if a parent brings a child to school after external doors have been closed, the main entrance door has to be used and you must sign in on the red late book.

The school is obliged to keep a record of the reason for late attendance. If a regular pattern emerges the School Attendance Officer will intervene.

Children who arrive 30 minutes after the start of the session will be marked as an unauthorised absence as will all absences without explanation.

School Safety and Security

Entry to School Premises

Parents and children should enter the site using the pedestrian access and footpath. The Foundation Phase, Flying Start and Sun Flowers are to the right of the building and the Key Stage 2 entrance and cycle sheds are to the left of the building. The main entrance is straight ahead of the main footpath. If you do bring your child to school by car please do not park in the main car park you can only access this if you or your child has a disability badge. Please do not park in the Taxi drop off points near the green gates or where you would cause an obstruction or danger to children and adults.

Photographs

We use Press photographs to celebrate pupils‟ individual or team successes. Unless parents contact the school to ask for names to be withheld, the school will release full names to accompany photographs. Parents are asked to complete a permissions slip for photos to be used, please ensure you inform a member of staff if your circumstances change.

Car Parking

Please do not park cars directly outside the main gates as this is an obstruction for emergency vehicles and it creates a hazard for which the Local Authority cannot accept responsibility. To prevent possible accidents parents are asked to park well away from the main gates. Please note that the school car parks are for staff and visitors to the school and are not for parental use. We especially ask that parents refrain from using them for dropping children off at Breakfast Club as this is the time staff arrive and congestion or accidents could occur.

Security & Fire Safety

Every effort is made to ensure that the school building is as secure as possible. All doors have automatic locking devices and entry can only be gained by using the intercom system in the main entrance.

All parents entering or exiting the school buildings are requested to use the main entrance only.

In order to maintain the highest possible level of security, the school operates a “Visitors Book”. All visitors and parent helpers are required to sign in at the school office on arrival where a visitor‟s badge will be issued and sign out before leaving the school building/site.

In the event of an emergency, locks on all the external doors are automatically released upon activation of the fire alarm system. Children are then evacuated onto the pre-arranged assembly points, where a roll call is conducted to ensure that everyone is present. Once a term, a fire drill is conducted, in line with LA guidelines.

CCTV cameras are also in operation and constantly monitored by all staff.

POLICIES

All policies may be obtained from the school office at any time during the

school day. SEN policy can be obtained from the Senco Miss Davies.
