WHAT IS NEW IN PSYCHIATRYAND PSYCHOTHERAPY?Creative Dimensions in ModernTreatment

On occasion of the centennialanniversary of the Bekhterev Instituteand the 25th anniversary of theWADP, we would like to invite youto our 15th World Congress of theWorld Association for Dynamic Psychiatry(WADP) and the 28th Inter -national Symposium of the GermanAcademy of Psychoanalysis (DAP).Both the congress and the symposiumare to be held in 2007 at theBekhterev Institute in St Petersburg, which has a long tradition of psychiatryand psychotherapy as well asmany years of close cooperation withus. The congress will address topicsrelating to the continuing advancementof psychiatric and psychotherapeuticknowledge in the service oftreatment, research, and teaching. Many pathologies, such as personalitydisorders, psychoses, and comorbiddiseases, and all early traumatizedpatients in general can beunderstood and treated only if psychoanalys-is,psychotherapy, and psychiatrykeep developing. An open, creative attitude and a multidimensionalapproach is necessary. Thismeans we must have treatment integratethe creative, healthy, and constructiveareas of the human beingand must understand the person asa multidimensional, holistic being. In recent years the world has witnessedthe development of revolutionarybrain physiology and imaging. It has become possible to use thebrain’s neuronal plasticity to substantiatemorphological and physiologicalcorrelates of affects, traumatisms, butalso of psychotherapeutic processeswith increasing clarity. Psychotherapyhas been stimulated also by the conceptof intergenerational transfer, the

development of attachment theory, and efforts to integrate recent physicaltherapies into psychotherapy. These advances, in turn, stimulatethe scientific search for a more holisticvision of the patient. It would givedue consideration to the processestaking place at the biological, psychological, and social levels ofhuman existence; to the interactionand interference of the processestaking place in that complex system;and to the limits on the potential oftherapeutic intervention at everylevel of the system.Establishing the gold standardsof therapy is a continuous dynamicprocess, for the limits on the potentialof therapeutic intervention are inconstant flux due to the progressbeing made by individual disciplineswithin our science.Dynamic Psychiatry sees itself asthis kind of open system of treatmentthat can absorb the results of widelydiverse areas of knowledge byembracing quantitative and qualitativeempirical research. The intent of this congress is tobring together the practitioners of asmany different disciplines as possibleto share their scientific expertise.May this gathering move forward ondevelopments in medicine, psychology, and psychoanalysis; on inter -disciplinary research from the fieldsof sociology, philosophy, education, and cultural anthropology; and onthe integration of pharmacotherapy. We owe special thanks to theRussian colleagues organising thiscongress, which is expected to drawscientists and scholars from morethan thirty countries. We also expressour gratitude for the supportreceived from a number of internationalorganisations, including theWorld Psychiatric Association, theWorld Association for Social Psychiatry, and the World Association ofPsychosocial Rehabilitation.
