As the holidays near, I have seen more and more advertisements about fooddrives, clothing drives and the need for volunteers. The team at sdBackyard.com

and I decided that we wanted to compile a list of non-profits in the area that need items or help fortheir holiday activities.

If you know of a non-profit agency in need of donations, please have the director submit thetop five items needed and the deadline for dropping them off, along with locations, on sdBackyard.com.We will print the listings in our special Thanksgiving issue on Nov. 28.

We are looking for anything from clothes or food needed to help with wrapping presents, put-ting together packages or delivering gifts. This is a great opportunity for organizations that haven’tgotten the word out. If you have any photos that could run with the story, please upload thosealong with captions to help tell your story.

Also include contact information for anyone who has questions about the holiday activity. If you have any

questions about theproject, please contactme at [email protected].

Don’t forget to takephotos of your wrap-ping parties and holidayget-togethers over theholidays and submit themon sdBackyard.com.Have a safe and happyholiday season. We hopeto see you in the ‘yard.

SHAREPurple Heart recipients attend long-range fishing trip

By Sal BrunettosdBackyard.com member, Scripps Ranch

As a Scripps Ranch resident and business owner of Brunetto Video Services, I wasinvited to document a long-range fishing trip to thank our military veterans in

October. Eight spots specifically for Purple Heart recipients were reserved for this trip.It was organized by Allen Gross in conjunction with the Purple Heart Fund organizationand the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.

Gross told us, “For 10 years, I have been the charter-master for a long-range fish-ing trip aboard the world’s largest and most luxurious long-range sport-fishing boat, the EXCEL. Each and every trip has been amazing and we look forward to our upcom-ing trip.” Gross went on, “I am doing something to thank our military veterans for thecourageous job they’ve done. I have reserved eight spots on the trip specifically forPurple Heart recipients to join myself and 17 friends and family members.” When

organizations and people started hearing about what he was about to do, donationsgraciously started coming in.

Gross contacted Brunetto Video Services to videotape and photograph the trip. Isaid yes without hesitation. What a great idea, not only to invite wounded veterans, but to also document this historic trip. This was the biggest undertaking BrunettoVideo Services has attempted and one of the most successful. I shot more than 11hours of video along with 550 pictures. Each person aboard will receive a fully editedhighlight DVD of the trip along with a photo disc that includes all the pictures thatwere taken aboard.

Hearing about the Marines heroic experiences’ serving our country was trulyfascinating. These eight Marines and their fellow anglers had an outstanding trip withclose to seven tons of fish brought aboard. I believe everyone aboard had a great timealong with plenty of fishing.

The boat was full of fish after the trip. / Photo provided bysdBackyard.com member Sal Brunetto

SD COALITION FOR THE HOMELESSHOLDS TURKEY DRIVE

The San Diego Coalition for the Homeless is prepar-ing for their 2008 Christmas Party for Homeless and

Low Income Kids. “Holiday Magic for Kids” is Dec. 20 atGolden Hall. There is a great line up of entertainment andwe are honored to have our returning emcee from Chan-nel 6, Joe Bauer. Randy Jones, Cy Young Award Winneras the Honorary Chair and Miles McPherson of The RockChurch, doing the invocation.

These are difficult times and the coalition wants toprovide holiday meals for every family in attendance. Itexpects more than 2,500 kids at the event and the goalis to collect more than 500 turkeys so each family willleave with a turkey they can prepare for the holidays.

They also need new toy donations. The toys need to

be for ages infant to 12. They can be unwrapped. If theyare wrapped, they need to be labeled with the genderand age of the recipient. In the past the group had aChristmas tree with tags on it listing an age and gender.People take a tag from the tree then buy and wrap thegift to go with the tag.

Other donations needed to make this party a successare:

• Lots of candy canes.• Wrapping materials, scissors, tape, stickers to

mark presents.• New toys. The age range is infant to 12.• Food for the volunteers Friday and Saturday during

the wrapping party.• Food to give to the homeless frozen or non-perishable.• Turkeys.• Monetary donations. Visit www.sdhomeless.org to

give via PayPal or mail your check to: San Diego Coalitionfor the Homeless, 270 East Douglas Avenue, El Cajon.

If you or your organization can help this mighty causeto take care of the underpriveldged families in San Diego, please e-mail [email protected] or contact the pro-gram director at [email protected].

This event is only for low-income and homeless chil-dren. All families must be pre-registered to attend.

FFriday, Oct. 18, was an exciting day for the elementary chil-dren of Country Montessori School. The 4th and 5th gradeMeadows class capped their fieldtrip at the San Diego NaturalHistory Museum by joining internationally known artist Robert

Wyland with his transformation of an original art piece.Studying the importance of water, the class took a field trip to see

the Water H20=Life Exhibit. While there, they ran into Wyland. Knownmostly for his marine life murals,Wyland’s work is seen on buildingsin several continents including the San Diego National Bank buildingdowntown.

Friday was the official grand opening of “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas fora Cooler Planet” in Balboa Park. Painting in the lobby,Wyland invitedthe class to help transform the sphere into a beautifully designedglobe. Encouraged by the artist, the children placed their handprintsand autographs on the work of art. Engaged in his conversation withthe children,Wyland remarked, “What a smart group of children.”Wyland asked Mallika Parlikar to paint the title of the work, “HandsAcross the Ocean.”

“Since you have all worked with me, you are all artists now!”Wyland said.

“This is a life changing experience,” commented David Beck, age 9.Wyland donated a copy of his book “Hold Your Water” to the class

and then signed the back of each child’s shirt. “This should help payfor college‚“ he joked. Some of Wyland’s pieces are known to sell fornearly $500,000.

The Cool Globes San Diego exhibit in Balboa Park is comprisedof 40 globes designed by local, national and international artists. The“Hands Across the Ocean” globe will be on display in the museumlobby for the next three weeks.

CMS is one of the first private education school options in Powayand continues to provide a world-renowned quality education-servingchildren from preschool through 5th grade.

The finished globe is on displayin the San Diego Natural HistoryMuseum lobby.

By Stephanie ParrysdBackyard.com member
