PRAYERPRAYERPRAYERPRAYER----THINKING AND NEWSTHINKING AND NEWSTHINKING AND NEWSTHINKING AND NEWS----THINKING THINKING THINKING THINKING

Whether we turn on the television or click an app, the news brings us into dark realms of the human condition. As we came out of the first days of Yom Tov, we learned of the horrible coordinated terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka (for which we and the world must mourn). The contrast to our Pesach experience could not have been more stark. We had celebrated peacefully with friends and family; we enjoyed good food and cheer amidst prayer, study and song.

What makes news news is that it deviates from our expectations - usually for the worse. This makes it exciting and interesting, earning its producers our attention (and our advertisers’ dollars). Swarthmore Professor Barry Schwartz famously argued that the secret to happiness is low expectations. We live (as we should) expecting that innocents should not be slaughtered. When they are, we become transfixed with horror and with the worry that this could be us.

Passover speaks of newsworthy events (containing much horror) and argues for their eternal relevance. Yet, we internalize these events diMerently from the way we do the news. We tell the story from a low starting point. Matchilin b’genut u’mesaymim b’shevach - beginning from shame and concluding with praise. We begin our national narrative from a slave status. From there, all directions point up.

This approach extends beyond our first moment of freedom. When we emerged from the Red Sea, we sang. When we awake every morning, we sing that same song as we pray. We approach every day, with modeh ani - our existence cannot be taken for granted. We approach life through praise and appreciation, for God and God’s world.

Prayer (and praise) can be a corrective to news-thinking. As we hear Shirat Hayam and Shir Hashirim this Shabbat, let us commit to bringing more song into our lives. Internalizing and regularizing prayer is a good place to start.
