1936) se quedó huérfano den i ñ o. ‘Me mandaron con mi tíom a t e rno al Sahara, donde eraadministrador civ i l de un fuert e.Era un apasionado de la lecturap o rq u e mi madre y él, hijos delfarero de la Isla de Lobos (Fuer-t eventura), ya se habían refu-giado en los libros para sobre-v ivir en un lugar en el que eranlos únicos habitantes. A h o r a ,se repetía la historia. Y yo, soloen el desiert o, me evadía en l o slibros de aventura de Steve n s o n ,de Julio Ve rn e, de Conrad... ycon Sandokan o Los piratas deMalasia...’, detalla.

De aquí viene entonces supasión por la piratería...Sí. Fui también marino, profe-sor de submarinismo y entre1960-1961 navegué en un ya t ede 15 metros de eslora de Bar-celona hasta Polinesia. Ta m-bién, en 1964, viví en la base dela piratería mundial: SantoD o m i n g o, como corr e s p o n s a lde guerra del diario ‘La Va n-guardia’. Mi pasión por la pira-tería me llevó años más tarde aescribir la trilogía ‘Piratas’,‘ N e greros’ y ‘León Bocanegr a ’ .

¿Qué opinión le merece la expo-sición de Museu Marítim?Es una muestra intelige n t e, por-que es un tema poco habitual apesar de ocupar los sueños dege n e r a c i o n e s. Es como un pis-toletazo de fantasía para loshombres que se ilusionaronalguna vez con encontrar unt e s o r o, y para las mujeres quefantasearon con ser aguerr i d a s

piratas o ser raptadas por unc o r s a r i o, sobre todo si se pare-cía a Errol Flynn... Ta m b i é n ,es importante el tono didácticode la exposición. Distingue cla-ramente entre bucanero (pira-tas que se alimentan de ‘bucan’o cerdo ahumado, propio de laisla de la To rtuga en SantoDomingo), filibusteros (piratasde bajura), corsarios (mercena-rios al servicio de un rey) y pira-tas (bandidos de alta mar).

¿Es difícil documentarse parahacer un libro de piratas?En España, Holanda e Inglate-rra hay mucha documentacióny es apasionante recopilarla. Sesabe más de los piratas que deldescubrimiento de América.

¿Quiénes son para usted lospiratas del siglo XXI?Aquellos magnates del ladrilloque destrozan la costa y no res-petan los parajes protegidos.

That is where your passion forpiracy comes from...Ye s. I was also a nav i g a t o r, sai-l o r, scuba-diving teacher, and Isailed in a 15-metre long ya c h tfrom Barcelona to Po lynesia in1960-1961. And, in 1964, I live d

in the world centre of p i r a c y :Santo Domingo, as the wa rc o rrespondent of the new s p a-per ‘La Vanguardia’. Years later,my passion for piracy led me towrite the trilogy ‘Pirates’, ‘SlaveTraders’ and ‘León Bocanegr a ’ .

What do you think of the exhi-bition at this museum?It’s an intelligent ex h i b i t i o n ,because it is not a ve ry norm a lsubject, despite the fact that ithas filled the dreams of m a n yge n e r a t i o n s. It will fuel the fan-tasies of all the men who havedreamt of finding treasure, andall the women who have fanta-sised about being fearsome pira-t e s, or being carried off by a cor-s a i r, especially if he looked likeE rrol Flynn... The educationaltone of the exhibition is alsoi m p o rtant. It clearly distinguis-hes between buccaneers (pira-tes who ate ‘bucan’ or smokedpork, typical of the island of L aTo rtuga in Santo Domingo),filibusters (coastal pirates), cor-sairs (mercenaries in the serv i c eo f a king) and pirates (bandits).

Is it difficult to research a bookabout pirates?In Spain, the Netherlands andBritain there are a lot of d o c u-m e n t s. We know more aboutpirates than about the disco-very of America.

Who do you consider to be thepirates of the 21st century?The construction tyc o o n s, whoare destroying the S p a n i s hcoast and have no respect foranything –not even protec-ted nature areas.
