THE DALE WARLAND SINGERSBased in the Twin Cities, The Dale Warland Singers is recognized internation-ally as one of the world's premier professional choral ensembles. The chorushas gained countless fans from 21 years of subscription concerts, tour andfestival appearances, radio broadcasts and 16 critically acclaimed recordings.
Founded in 1972, The Singers has earned an international reputation for itscommitment to the commissioning and performance of twentieth centurychoral music. This pioneering effort has fostered a greater awareness andappreciation of contemporary choral literature and has provided vital leader-ship to foster the creation and performance of the music of our day bytoday's emerging and established composers.
With a particular focus on the works of living American composers, theorganization is committed to providing increasing opportunities forcomposers and to keeping the choral genre fresh and alive with new musicalideas. Regular commissioning projects have involved such composers asDominick Argento, Stephen Paulus, Anthony Davis, George Shearing, MaryEllen Childs, Peter Schickele, Bernard Rands, Edwin London and CarolBarnett, The Singers' current composer in residence.
The New Choral Music Reading / Commissioning / Performance Program,unique among choral organizations, encourages the writing of new choralworks by emerging composers. Funded by the Jerome Foundation andIDS Financial Services, commissions have been awarded to Mary EllenChilds, William Hawley, Alf Houkom, Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson, Jackie T. Gabeland Janice Hamer. A recent call for scores resulted in over one hundred andthirty submissions.
In 1992 The Dale Warland Singers was the first-eve-r recipient of the .Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. In back to backawards, 1992 and 1993, the Singers' extraordinary efforts on behalf ofcomposers and new music resulted in the ASCAP-Chorus America Awardfor Adventuresome Programming.
As one of the Twin Cities' major cultural institutions, the 36-voice DaleWarland Singers is also committed to the professional employment ofensemble singers and is the only fully-professional choral ensemble in the
( Upper Midwest. This focus has raised the awareness and appreciation ofprofessional choral performance and has created new opportunities in theTwin Cities and beyond for the growing employment of professionalchoral singers.
The Dale Warland Singers presents an annual subscription series in the TwinCities and tours extensively throughout the United States. The group has alsoconcertized internationally and most recently represented North America atthe Second World Symposium on Choral Music. Their concerts have beenbroadcast over German, Swedish and Finnish state radio. The ensemble wasoften heard on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, and hasappeared regularly on American Public Radio's St. Paul Sunday Morning.The 1992 Dale Warland Singers' Echoes of Christmas concert was carried by190 public radio stations and reached an estimated seven million listeners.

DALE WARLANDFounder and Music Director, The Dale Warland SingersThe 1993 - 94 concert season marks founder Dale Warland's twenty-secondyear at the helm as Music Director of The Dale Warland Singers. Warland hasdevoted his professional life to attaining the highest musical level in choralsinging. Consummate musicianship and attention to detail have been histools in building one of the finest choral groups in the United States. UnderDr. Warland's leadership, the ensemble has thrilled choral music lovers, notjust in its Twin Cities home, but throughout North America and Europe.
Beyond his active schedule as Music Director of The Dale Warland Singers,Warland is in demand as guest conductor, lecturer and composer. He hasconducted such prestigious choirs as the Swedish Radio Choir, Danish RadioChoir, Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, andIsrael's leading professional choir, the Cameran Singers. In August of 1990,Warland prepared the chorus for Penderecki's Polish Requiem, the culminat-ing event of The Second World Symposium on Choral Music in Finland.Warland is an active composer and a member of the American Society ofComposers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). This season he will serve onthe choral panel of the National Endowment for the Arts.
After earning academic degrees at St. Olaf College, the University ofMinnesota and the University of Southern California, he served as Professorof Music at Macalester College, St. Paul. He has been the recipient of majorgrants from the Ford Foundation, the Bush Foundation and the MinnesotaState Arts Board. Dr. Warland holds distinguished alumnus awards from St.Olaf College and the University of Southern California. In May 1992,he washonored with a Doctor of Humane Letters from Augustana College, SiouxFalls, South Dakota in recognition of his service to choral music.
PETER HENDRICKSoNMusic Director, The Warland Symphonic Chorus; Assistant Conductor,The Dale Warland SingersPeter Hendrickson joined the artistic staff of The Dale Warland Singers inJuly as Music Director of the Warland Symphonic Chorus and AssistantConductor of The Dale Warland Singers. Since that time, Hendrickson hasprepared the Symphonic Chorus for five concert programs with theMinnesota Orchestra including Bernstein's Candide and the orchestra's open-ing concert of Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand. As Assistant Conductor ofthe DWS, he will prepare the Singers for guest conductors and will assistwith programming, recording activities, and the development of a choral
,education program.
Hendrickson is the Director of Music and Organist of WestminsterPresbyterian Church, Minneapolis and recently served as the Music Directorof the Minnetonka Choral Society and as the Interim Director of ChoralActivities at Augsburg College. He has been on the faculties of MacalesterCollege and Columbia University. As a graduate student at both theHochschule der Kuenste and the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule, Berlin, hestudied conducting, organ, and harpsichord. He received his Doctor ofMusical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music and has performedat the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, the Bach Aria Festival inStony Brook, and the Aspen Music Festival.

Minnesota Public Radio (locally, KS]N 99.5 FM) will broadcast TheDale Warland Singers' Echoes of Christmas concert, recorded earlierthis month at Ted Mann Concert Hall, on Thursday, December 23, at7 pm. The program will be hosted by MPR on-air personality and DWSsinger Mark Sheldon.
WCAl (89.3 FM) will present a tape-delayed broadcast of TheGlorious Sounds of Christmas on Sunday, December 26, at 2 pm.
