World-Class Music from Weimar

Bach’s Weimar YearsOver 300 years ago, Johann Sebastian Bach came to Weimar and spent nine important years of his life in this city (1708 – 1717). He began his era as a master composer here. It was here that he created three fourths of his organ works as well as many cantatas and works for harpsichord. Initially, he was employed as court organist and chamber musician. Later, he served as concert master of the court orchestra. His private life in Weimar was also a time of cre-ativity: his sons Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, and Johann Gottfried Bernhard were born here.

Franz Liszt – a European in WeimarIn 1848, Franz Liszt came to Weimar as Court Musical Director. Before that, he travelled throughout Europe as a celebrated pianist. During his time in Weimar, he developed into a composer, conductor, and art patron. It was here that he wrote many of his piano works, the Hungarian Rhapsodies, and the symphony based on Goethe’s Faust, and he also conducted the world premiere of Wagner’s “Lohengrin”. In nearby Den-stedt, the pianist organized the legendary “Organ Conferenc-es” together with Cantor Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg. In the Liszt House, to which he returned many times for the summer months after he left Weimar in 1861, there is now a museum.

Weimar is famous as a center for literature and the arts. Even if Goethe and Schiller are the most famous inhabitants who chose Weimar as their home, the city has also earned world-wide renown on the music scene. Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and Richard Strauss all spent time here. Each of them added a new chapter to the artistic and cultural history of Weimar. Weimar has remained to this day a city of music – important contributors to this status are: The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, the Staatskapelle Weimar with its over 400-year tradition, and the many music festivals. The German National Theater’s repertoire, performed by the Staatskapelle Weimar in symphony concerts and in various opera productions, continually presents works from the musical greats from Weimar. Discover Weimar’s musical side with this detailed map.
