INTRODUCTION

24th DJANGOFOLLLIES

13 > 31/01/2018 - 31 locations - 32 concerts – 5 movie shows ‘Django did something that few other people could have done. He was so exceptional that he was able on his own to forge a whole new music genre (Hot Club Gypsy swing). He was a guitar virtuoso with a fantastic feeling for lyricism, structure and balance. His unmistakable genius lies in the way he so effortlessly combined existing elements of jazz with musette and gypsy music to create masterpieces which have passed and will continue to pass the test of time. He must be considered one of the most important musical innovators of the 20th century.’ Waso De Cauter.

REMINDER OF THE MAIN OUTLINES

Django Reinhardt is commonly considered as the most influential personality that European Jazz has ever produced. Thanks to his improvisations on the guitar, this Gypsy made a major contribution to Jazz. His performances were characterized by unmatched intensity. Even today, he remains a model for many of the world’s greatest guitar players.

Brosella initiated the first Djangofolllies to honour the memory of this great artist in 1994, at the initiative of Koen De Cauter. Since then, Brosella has celebrated Django’s birthday annually, to the delight of fans of this kind of music whose thirst for it remained unsatisfied.

It has always been our intention to work across musical boundaries. The programme of Djangofolllies is not limited to the traditional ‘Django style’ but also includes music which shines a new light on the genre and goes beyond the barriers of the ‘Hot Club’ music. Brosella has featured a wide and varied musical programme, including modern jazz, experiments in flamenco, the poems of Garcia Lorca, or other creative projects that the organizers considered interesting for their audience.

Brosella seeks a balance between the headliners and young talents, giving the latter the opportunity to play for an audience attracted by better-known artists.

Over the years Djangofolllies has presented such bands as the Patrick Saussois & Koen De Cauter Quartet, the Fapy Lafertin Quintet, the Tcha Limberger Quartet, the Christian Becker Trio, Radio Lume, Opus Swing, the Lollo Meier & André Donni Quartet, Alexandre Cavaliere & Jazzy Strings, the Jokke Schreurs Trio, the Django Experience, …

In the meantime, Djangofolllies has become a significant and major event in its category, to the great joy of both the aficionados of the ‘Django’ style and the curious newcomers. Over the years, the organizers have collaborated with many venues throughout Belgium, giving rise to interesting exchanges that seem to have already borne fruit in other fields.

2018 ARTISTS JAZZY STRINGS (BE/FR)

13/01 Les Riches-Claires (Brussels) Jazzy Strings was born from a passion for gypsy jazz and the two jazz giants Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grapelli. The band was formed in 1992 by Mario Cavaliere, father of the violin virtuoso Alexandre Cavaliere, and has been invited in the meantime at the biggest European festivals (Juan-Les-Pins, Nice, Marciac, Samois-sur-Seine, Helsinki). At these concerts, the band shared regularly the stage with guest musicians like Angelo Debarre, Birelli Lagrène, Didier Lockood, Samson and Dorado Schmitt. Alexandre Cavaliere is a gypsy jazz violinist virtuoso. As a child prodigy, he was discovered at the age of 12 at the Django d'or in Brussels in 1998. Two masters, Didier Lockood and Babik Reinhardt, were impressed and invited him to Paris. It was the beginning of a successful career. In the meantime, Alexandre has been invited to perform at a lot of international venues with the band of his father, Mario Cavaliere, and he stands for an impressive list of performances. He can’t hide his passion for playing, it’s all over his face during his performances. Fred Guedon is originated from the Auvergne in France. He discovers Django’s music thanks to Mathieu Châtelain. He has been touring for many years in the Gipsy Swing circuit in France with Dominique Carré, Claudius Dupont, Véronique Audin, François Brunel, ... and had the opportunity to play with grandmasters. Today, he’s regularly performing with his friend Christophe Astolfi, but you can also find him in a number of Belgian bands. Bart Denolf has been playing the double bass for Toots Thielemans, Adamo, amongst others. This omnipresent musician had the pleasure to perform with an impressive number of soloists, like Horace Parlan, Jerome Richardson, Kenny Wheeler, Mal Waldron, Von Freeman, Sadi... He also shared the stage with Dave Pike, Deborah Brown, Gene "Mighty Flea" Connors, Mal Waldron, Michel Herr, Barney Wilen , Shirley Bassey, Eric Le Lan, Kenny Werner, Peter Erskine ... In the new line-up, René Desmaele, trumpet player & singer, joins the band. René and Mario share the same passion for the music of Django and Louis Armstrong, for swing and the music of the thirties. Together, they put a surprisingly original mix of gypsy jazz and classical jazz. It is fact that very few trumpet players are able to play Django’s music properly, because his pitches and rhythms are very unusual for brass players.

Mario Cavaliere (lead guitar), Alexandre Cavaliere (violin), Fred Guédon (rhythm guitar), Bart Denolf (double bass) & René Desmaele (trumpet, vocals)

It is fact that very few trumpet players are able to play Django’s music properly, because his pitches and rhythms are very unusual for brass players. For the Djangofolllies, they are proud to invite their friend, the well-known French composer, violinist and guitarist Dorado Schmitt and his son Amati. Dorado, considered one of the great stars of gypsy jazz, contributed to the development of a universal artistic heritage: some of his works have become standards in the world of jazz. No one has done more to ignite contemporary interest in the idiom than Dorado Schmitt. Born to gypsy parents near the German border in Lorraine, France, Dorado was weaned on traditional Roma music and gypsy jazz. He rebelled as a teenager by taking up electric guitar and emulating Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. Schmitt started visiting the United States in 2002 and has become a star attraction at major festivals. He has stolen the show at several of the annual Django Reinhardt New York Festivals at Birdland, and his legendary status has earned him the role of ambassador to the jazz world, performing alongside Oscar Peterson, Paquito D’Rivera, George Benson and James Carter. He now stands as one of the most respected and in-demand gypsy jazz artists in the world. Against the tide of fashion and show business pressures, his kindness and natural voice bring pride to the gypsy community. Sonny Amati Schmitt, one of the sons of Gipsy Jazz legend Dorado Schmitt, was born on 8 August 1995 in Thionville in Moselle. He started studying piano and solfeggio at the age of six, but at the age of eight, he couldn’t resist the attraction of the guitar, honouring his origins. His technical progress on the instrument was spectacular, thanks to the advices of his father and of course, his talent. At the age of nine, he joined his father on stage for the very first time. In the meantime Harmonia Mundi has released his debut album “Sonny Day”. He performed for the first time with his own quartet at the Jazz Transfert festival in Saarbrücken/Germany and the public got wild. The same thing happened at the famous Django Reinhardt festival in Samois sur Seine. Very few musicians can claim such a privilege at the age of sixteen.

‘WANNES MEETS DJANGO ’ Wannes Van de Velde is known in Flanders above all as bard and lyric writer, much less as a composer. However, Wannes and his companions (Walter Heynen for example, just to name one) have written many brilliant compositions that needed no lyrics to be outstanding. Jokke Schreurs and his musicians wanted to highlight this little-known aspect of Wannes’ repertoire. With their project 'Wannes meets Django', they want to demonstrate that the institution Wannes Van de Velde has issued such strong musical compositions that they can become jazz standards on their own, alongside those of Duke, Django, Cole Porter or Gershwin. They also hope in this way to raise awareness of the qualities as a composer of the singer-songwriter-troubadour. Jokke Schreurs is known as a guitarist and interpreter of Django’s music, and from now on, also of Wannes’ music. Jokke played among others with Warre Borgmans, Tanguedia, Miel Cools and Guido Belcanto as well as a few times with Wannes himself. Composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, flugelhorn, percussions and timpani drums) Sam Vloemans is a Jack-of-all-trades and his music is difficult to categorize. Born in Curacao, Sam was immersed in a Latin culture from infancy, but he is equally comfortable with jazz, soul and pop. Bass player and vocalist Henk de Laat has played with Enrique Tarde, Denise Jannah, Shirley Bassey, Pieter Embrechts, Bob Mallach, Sabien Tiels, Bob Mincer, ... Luc Vanden Bosch received multiple awards (first prize in the European Jazz-contest ‘Jazz Hoeilaart’, solo-prize in the AVRO-JAZZ contest in Amsterdam, …). He got the chance to play as a free-lance musician in the Belgian radio Big-Band directed by Etienne Verschueren. He has played with Vaya con Dios, Rony Verbiest, Olla Vogala, Johan Clement Trio, Arne Van Coillie Trio, ... What would have happened if Django had had the opportunity to discover and play Wannes’ compositions? This perhaps?

LOLLO MEIER SEXTET (NL/RO/IT)

Lollo Meier (guitar), Rares Morarescu (violin), Carlo Butera (rhythm guitar), Boebu Meier (rhythm guitar), Henry Schuler (double bass) & Bart Keltjens (drums).

19/01 Flagey (Brussels) - 22/01 Banana Peel (Ruiselede) 26/01 Church (Liberchies) - 27/01 GC de Muze van Meise (Meise)

Lollo Meier, the legendary Gypsy guitarist met Rares Morarescu, a violinist of Romanian origin, during a tour in the South of Italy. Thanks to their traditional and unique style, they give life to a surprising and joyful Gypsy jazz, defying a wide repertoire through the most popular Gypsy melodies and the finest compositions of the "impressionistic" period of Django Reinhardt (Porto Cabello, Noir et Blanc, Nymphéas,...). Lollo Meier and Rares Morarescu explore Gypsy jazz with a taste for swing phrasing and virtuosic improvisation. Their music is a journey through the "Belle Epoque", when Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, accompanied by the Hot Club of France, awed crowds around the world. The lyricism and the swing of Lollo Meier & Rares Morarescu are fabulous. This will no doubt be an absolutely memorable concert for fans of Django’s music. Raised on Gypsy swing from an early age, Lollo Meier is a guitar master, composer, bandleader and arranger, Lollo comes from an elite family of Gypsy players and is cousin to the great Fapy Lafertin and Stochelo Rosenberg. His goal: to carry on the music of Django, with a style and technique that’s traditional, melodious, lyrical, sensitive and joyful. His mellifluous compositions have a refreshing authentic Django flavor and are played with extraordinary talent, unique style and amazing suppleness that clearly reflects that he makes music he loves. His Quartet is sought after around the globe for private functions and renowned jazz festivals, famous for playing lesser known Django tunes and his own compositions. A man of style, grace and humor, Lollo’s pure melodious playing touches his audiences and makes Django’s music as fresh today as it was 80 years ago. As well as performing, he spends much of his time teaching sought-after master-classes, sharing his artistry and passing down Django’s legacy. A remarkable man, with a remarkable style of playing. Out of 15,000 world entries in the 2005 International Song Writing competition, Nashville USA, Lollo Meier became a finalist with Melody for Le QuecumBar, with honouree status and became part of the top 1.4% of entrants. Violinist of Romanian origin, Bucharest, Rares Morarescu is one of the most extraordinary and surprising contemporary jazz violinists. A child prodigy, he began playing the violin at the age of 5 and, at the age of 14 years, he played on many international stages. In parallel, he performed with the Orchestra of the "Romanian Television Radio" as a violinist and participated in several productions of the orchestra of the Bucharest Opera and the big band "Rapsodia". In 1993 he moved to Italy where he worked with the most prestigious musical institutions and sets. With its sincere attachment and dedication to the Gypsy Tradition and the Swing of the Belle Epoque, he is considered a faithful disciple of the Grand Master Stéphane Grappelli.

MAURIZIO GERI SWINGTET (IT)

Maurizio Geri (guitar, vocals), Luca Giovacchini (guitar), Michele Marini (clarinet), Giacomo Tosti (accordion), Nicola Vernuccio (double bass).

25/01 La Tentation (Brussels) - 26/01 CC Leopoldsburg (Leopoldsburg) 27/01 De Centrale (Ghent) - 28/01 De Roma (Antwerp)

The show is stylistically inspired by the Alsatian gypsy tradition, by the original founder Django Reinhardt, and all the other contaminations that have up to now made gypsy jazz vital and “modern”. The musical content places the concert in a current dimension, while the instrumentation (acoustic) communicates a nostalgic and evergreen retro feeling. On this path, between the European gypsy tradition, American swing and Italian popular songwriting, a new and original alchemy is born, a sound that winks to the Mediterranean, between the historic and innovative, the stylistic research and new creation, all aspects that place the swingtet as The Band in Italy for the genre, for its longevity, curriculum and discography, the only formation to date to have participated in the most prestigious French festival dedicated to Django: “Samois sur Seine”. The “Swingtet” is for Maurizio Geri the culmination of a work that began many years ago and with the project in question, enters in the heart of a new development. Orienting his instrumental and musical research towards the great Django Reinhardt, Maurizio did so the “right way”: by studying gypsy jazz with the “manouche”, playing with them, living in close contact with them, learning directly from them, without giving up himself and his own roots. He practiced Django’s lesson not only and not as much on the instrument, but mostly in the space between originality and adherence to tradition that made Reinhardt the undisputed model for many generations of European not formally trained musicians. The music of the Swingtet are testimony, along with Maurizio’s interviews, of the free and passionate, rigorous and at the same time open approach that has characterized the band, particularly the emphasis on Django’s contribution to the articulate context of jazz, dance music and improvisation, a totally European context, but careful to the tradition of the italian song, along with the popular Tuscan and Mediterranean music that was his first love and his formative “gym”, as a instrumentalist and author. MINOR SING (FR) Sylvain Pourrat (double bass), Jean Lardanchet (violin), Laurent Vincenza (guitar), Yannick Alcocer (guitar).

16/01 CC Les Riches-Claires (Brussels) 17/01 Jacques Pelzer Jazz Club (Liège)

18/01 La Posterie (Courcelles) As a French gypsy swing acoustic quartet, Minor Sing blends own compositions and interpretations of great standards by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. Although they are very respectful of the great masters of the style, they keep on developing their own identity and cultivate their own band sound. First associated with a singer (hence the name of Minor Sing), the group became an exclusively instrumental quartet when it was joined in 2014 by Yannick Alcocer (also guitarist of Les Doigts de l’Homme). Yannick Alcocer (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) started playing guitar with his father, focussing on Latin American music. When he arrived in France, he discovered Western music, including jazz and soul. Completely enthralled by the music of Django Reinhardt, he recorded his first swing records in Brittany before joining in 2005 ‘Les Doigts de l’Homme’. Jazz violinist and guitarist, Jean Lardanchet, another admirer of the music of Django and Grappelli, has been active on the gypsy swing scene for over ten years. Sylvain Pourrat has been involved as a musician and composer in jazz ensembles, French chanson bands and projects with actors (Bastien Brison Trio, Les Amandises, Trio Kodama). Laurent Vincenza who discovered the music of Django at the age of twelve with an old vinyl LP record borrowed from his father, divides his time between giving concerts with his group Minor Sing and teaching the guitar at the Conservatoire of Limonest. Their joyful and catchy swing combined with a performance full of complicity and humour on stage, contributes to their success, attracting a still growing enthusiastic audience!

NATHAN, TCHA & VILMOS (BE/HU) Nathan Daems (tenor saxophone & Turkish kaval), Tcha Limberger (guitar & vocals),

Csikós Vilmos (double bass).

14/01 CCRC (La Louvière) - 19/01 ‘t Ey (Belsele) - 20/01 Rataplan (Antwerp)

23/01 Kunsthumaniora (Brussels) - 31/01 CC Het Bolwerk (Vilvoorde) This new trio with Tcha Limberger on guitar and vocals, Csikós Vilmos on double bass and Nathan Daems on tenor saxophone and Turkish kaval, has a wide repertoire: old Manouche songs, Nathan & Tcha's own songs, something Romanian, something Greek, an old unknown standard, Django Reinhardt tunes, etc ...

Nathan Daems is a multi-instrumentalist, playing mainly saxophones and flutes (ney, kaval, washint, western classical flute). He has a love of gypsy music from the Balkan region and Turkey, jittery Ska or Indian classical music, Ethio jazz as well as full-blooded jazz. It thus comes as no surprise that Daems can be found in a variety of bands such as Bazaar d’Orient, Black Flower, Ragini Trio, Mafiasko Taxi and the Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra. He won in 2010 the Young Jazz Talent competition during the Ghent Jazz Festival with his Nathan Daems Quintet, resulting in the release of the album “Praten dialect”. In 2013 he founded Ragini Trio with the Italian double bass player Marco Bardoscia and Lander Gyselinck on drums. The three young musicians tore the boundaries of jazz and Indian rag on the album “Ragini”. The name is derived from a similar electronic instrument that produces a kind of sitar-like sound, which gives the music an invasive and almost meditative test. However, whoever thinks of esoteric muzak immediately is wrong. Ragini Trio surprised with fast soles, ingenious compositions and arrangements, interchanged with exciting collective improvisations. Daems' other band Black Flower plays music inspired by Ethiopian jazz (eg Mulatu Astatke or Mahmoud Ahmed). Black Flower released its debut album “Abyssinia Afterlife” in 2014. The album ended up in 87th place in the World Music Charts Europe 2014. On top, Daems also founded the Nathan Daems Karsilama Quintet, which plays Turkish Roma music. He was one of the musicians who composed the soundtrack of the “Thank God it's Friday” documentary by Jan Beddegenoodts and Niel Iwens. In 2015, he composed the soundtrack of the Palestinian film "Love, Theft and Other Entanglements", directed by Muayad Alayan and presented at the Berlinale in February 2015. Daem's next band is called Collective N Trance, a combination of ancient sufi rhythms with jazz and afro-Brazilian percussion. Now he is the founder of this new trio that we would like to introduce at Djangofolllies 2018. Tcha Limberger is the son of guitarist Vivi Limberger (Waso Quartet) and grandson of violinist Piotto Limberger, both well-known figures in the gypsy jazz. The music he masterfully and graciously plays, is close to his heart. Tcha does not only focus on Gipsy jazz, he has already a lot of other music styles in the fingers, witnessing the large number of projects he has been working on, so far. With Tcha (meanwhile world famous among the connoisseurs of just about every Balkan style & Gipsy jazz) it's always pure magic. The young Hungarian double bass player Csikós Vilmos (also well-known to Djangofolllies and Brosella Folk & Jazz) won various prizes ant talent competitions in France, Italy, Romania and in Belgium the Belfius Classics and Young Belgian Talent. He’s just amazing to see in action...

"Rire avec Chaplin" is a feast, an impromptu symphony, powerful and beautiful, a meeting-point of rare talents that is going to unite people for a very long time. It’s the encounter between Samson Schmitt and two exceptional musicians from Liège: Johan Dupont and Joachim Iannello. In the Galaxy of the Schmitt Family, Samson signed with audacity the new story of the gypsy guitar. Lyrical, charming, powerful, creative, flexible, generous with profound sound, precise bending and unstoppable rhythm, …all at the same time. Add to this the ferocious and brassy virtuosity of Joachim’s violin, the swing and creative genius of Johan Dupont and you’ll get an unlimited cocktail of great music. You’ll even get a taste of new rhapsody, bossa, nu-jazz ... Served with sounds emblematic of benchmark compositions, we could say that we are satisfied with this delectable work, without fuss.

Every night, guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt delights Parisian audiences with his witty, life-affirming ‘gypsy swing’ music. Whilst many other Romany people are finding themselves the target of racist persecution and being murdered in concentration camps, Django believes himself to be safe due to his popularity – until agents of the Nazi propaganda machine demand that he goes on tour to Germany in order to counteract the influence of ‘negro music’ from the USA. Django Reinhardt decides to run …"
