Beste deelnemers, genodigden en bezoekers,

Het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd, Neerpelt (EMJ) ontwaakte op 1 januari 2019 in een nieuw dorp. “Pelt” is de naam van de nieuwe fusiegemeente die ontstaan is uit Neerpelt en Overpelt. Wij zijn daarom ook verheugd om duizenden jongeren voor de eerste keer te mogen ontvangen in onze nieuwe gemeente “Pelt”. Hoe jong deze gemeente ook mag zijn, het EMJ mag reeds 67 kaarsjes uitblazen. In al die tijd werkte een zeer grote groep vrijwilligers aan een samenhorigheidsgevoel dat reeds vanaf de eerste editie de grenzen van onze gemeente overschreed. Als kers op de taart kunnen we dit jaar aan onze bezoekers melden dat het aantal deelnemende landen van deze 67ste editie een nieuw record van 29 landen heeft bereikt. “Jongeren stimuleren om muziek te maken”, “Jongeren stimuleren om SAMEN muziek te maken”, “Respect tonen voor identiteit en cultuur”, allemaal doelen waarin ons Festival een trendsetter wil zijn. In dat opzicht kunnen er nooit voldoende landen deelnemen aan ons Festival.

Zowel binnen als buiten de Europese grenzen wordt onze samenleving uitgedaagd om de positieve boodschap van “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” uit te dragen. Muziek is daarbij een belangrijk en dankbaar medium. Een universele taal …

die niet gekleurd is door vooroordelen maar enkel harmonie nastreeft;die niet iedereen kan spreken maar wel kan aanhoren;die we niet moeten kennen om ze te waarderen.

Ons Festival wil een stimulans zijn voor onze jeugd om de taal van muziek van alle landen te ervaren. Daarom zullen wij de komende dagen een uniek event, ervaring en een gevarieerd programma aanbieden voor elke muziekliefhebber. Wij hopen u dan ook te mogen verwelkomen op een van onze vele concerten of activiteiten.

Het Festival dankt de Europese Gemeenschap, de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Provincie Limburg, de Gemeente Pelt, de diverse sponsors en partners, de vrienden van het Festival en de vele vrijwilligers voor hun structurele ondersteuning en sympathie.

Dear participants, invitees and guests,

The European Music Festival for Young People, Neerpelt (EMJ) woke up in a new village on January 1st, 2019. “Pelt” is the name of the new village, a merger of Neerpelt and Overpelt. This is why we are happy to host, for the first time, thousands of youngsters, in our new-found village Pelt. And how ever young our village may be, the EMJ celebrates its 67th edition. All this time, a dedicated group of volunteers have worked on a feeling of togetherness that has, eversince, gone far beyond the borders of our village. As cherry on top, we are proud to say that the amount of participating countries in this 67th edition has reached a new record of 29. “Stimulate young people to make music”, “Stimulate young people to make music TOGETHER”, “Show respect for identity and culture”, goals in which our Festival wishes to be a trendsetter. In that respect there can never be enough participating countries.

Within Europe, as well as outside, our society is being challenged to spread the message “Alle Menschen werden Brüder”. In this, music is a significant and grateful medium. A universal language …

not stained by prejudice, but striving to harmony;that not everybody speaks, but everybody can hear;that we don’t have to know, to appreciate.

Our Festival wants to be a stimulus for our youth to experience the language of music of all countries. This is why, in the days to come, we offer a unique event, a unique experience and varied program for all music lovers. We hope to welcome you to one of our many concerts or happenings.

Neyire AshworthLonden - Verenigd KoninkrijkNeyire, half Brits en half Turks, heeft als motto het integreren van instrumentaal musiceren op topniveau en improvisatie met een engagement om holistisch te presteren. Ze is een klarinettiste met vocale- en acteervaardigheden en is een all-round improviseerder. Met een succesvolle opleiding, genoten in Londen, Rotterdam, Antwerpen en New York, trad ze op internationaal niveau op in ensembles, theaterstukken en als soliste. Ze voerde vele nieuwe werken uit en werkte mee aan meerdere opnames. Haar “Zimro Trio” met invloeden van folkmuziek, improvisatie en het klassieke trio-repertoire en haar “New London Chamber Ensemble” vinden plezier in het musiceren met choreografie en dit vanuit het geheugen. Neyire is professor klarinet voor jonge muzikanten aan de “Guildhall School of Music, Juniors”.

Neyire, half-British and half-Turkish, has as motto integrating top-class instrumental playing and improvising with a commitment to performing holistically; an embodied clarinettist, with vocal and acting skills, and an all-round improviser. Trained in London, Rotterdam, Antwerp and New York City, she has performed in ensembles, theatre pieces and as soloist internationally, has performed many new works and has appeared on numerous recordings. Her Zimro Trio is blurring boundaries between folk music, improvisation and classics of the trio repertoire and her New London Chamber Ensemble has much fun playing pieces from memory with choreography. Neyire is professor of clarinet for young musicians at the Guildhall School of Music, Juniors.

Arild AndersenSkien – NoorwegenArild Andersen studeerde fluit aan het “Østlandets” Conservatorium van Oslo en muziekdirectie aan de Muziekacademie van Riga. Hij is fluitist in meerdere orkesten en een succesvol dirigent van meerdere amateur- en professionele orkesten en koren waarmee hij goede resultaten behaalt in binnen- en buitenland. Hij is tevens jurylid in verschillende nationale en internationale wedstrijden.

Arild Andersen studied flute at Østlandets Musikkonservatorium in Oslo and conducting at the Music Academy in Riga. He is a flute player in various orchestras and a successful conductor of many amateur and professional orchestras and choirs, achieving good results in Norway and abroad. He also is adjudicator at several national and international competitions.

Anders ÅstrandStockholm – Zweden Anders Åstrand is een slaghamerspecialist die regelmatig over de hele wereld optreedt en workshops geeft. Hij legt de focus op melodisch en ritmisch improviseren en maakte hierin meerdere composities. Hij werkt samen met verschillende internationale muzikanten, is opleidingsconsultant en leidde diverse muziekprojecten. Hij heeft op artistiek vlak relaties met “Zildjian” en “Vic Firth” drumstokken.

Anders Åstrand is a mallet specialist who regularly performs and gives workshops throughout the world. He focusses on melodic and rhythmical improvisation and has made various compositions. He collaborates with a lot of international musicians, is education consultant and has led several projects. Ludo Claesen*Hasselt – BelgiëLudo Claesen studeerde percussie, muziekschriftuur, compositie en koor- en orkestdirectie aan het Lemmensinstituut van Leuven en het Vlaams Muziekconservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij doceerde 36 jaar lang polyfonie en orkestratie aan LUCA-ARTS Leuven. Momenteel doceert hij koordirectie aan het Conservatorium Maastricht Zuyd en aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium Hasselt. Hij is componist, dirigent, docent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Ludo Claesen studied percussion, notation, composition and choral- and orchestral conducting at the “Lemmensinstituut” in Louvain and the Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp. He taught for 36 years polyphonics and orchestration at the LUCA-ARTS Louvain. Currently he teaches choir conducting at the Conservatory Maastricht Zuyd and at the Conservatory Hasselt. Andrew CruickshankGlasgow – Verenigd KoninkrijkAndrew Cruickshank komt van het Schotse Glasgow en studeerde aan de Londense Koninklijke Muziekacademie en de Guildhall school voor muziek en drama. Hij heeft zeer intensief gemusiceerd als contrabas-speler en dit in diverse stijlen en genres. Hij won meerdere prijzen als componist en schreef meerdere stukken voor kunsten op het podium en het scherm met als hoogtepunt een eerste uitvoering van zijn opera afgelopen jaar. Hij componeerde verschillende werken voor jongeren en is een veelgevraagd docent en onderwijsspecialist. Hij neemt voor een derde keer deel als EMJ-jurylid.

Andrew Cruickshank is from Glasgow, Scotland and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. He has performed extensively on double bass in many styles and genres. He is an award-winning composer and has written several works for stage & screen with his first opera being performed last year. Andrew has also composed numerous works for young people and is constantly in demand as a teacher and education specialist. This is Andrew’s third time as EMJ jury member.www.andrewcruickshank.com

John Damsma*Scheemda – Nederland John Damsma studeerde cello, schoolmuziek en orkestdirectie aan het Conservatorium te Groningen. Hij is internationaal actief als arrangeur en dirigent en heeft zich toegelegd op lichte muziek en het opleiden van koordirigenten. Hij is medeauteur over de ontwikkeling van het muziekonderwijs, gastdocent en jurylid tijdens binnen- en buitenlandse festivals en wedstrijden. John is artistiek leider en landelijk juryvoorzitter van het Nederlands Koor Festival.

John Damsma studied the cello, school music and orchestra conducting at the Conservatory of Groningen. He is internationally active as arranger and conductor and concentrates on light music and educating choir conductors. He is a co-author for the development of school music, a guest lecturer and a jury member at festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. John is artistic leader and national jury president at the Dutch Choir Festival. www.johndamsma.nl

Raf De Keninck*Veldhoven – NederlandRaf De Keninck werkte als dirigent in heel Europa en nam cd’s op voor de labels Phaedra en Vanderkrieken Classics. Als dirigent en als klarinettist creëerde hij tientallen werken die te beluisteren zijn op radio-opnames en cd-producties. Daarnaast is hij directeur departement Muziek aan de Fontys University of Fine and Performing Arts te Tilburg. Dit departement is onderdeel van een kunstencampus en herbergt “Academy of Music and Performing Arts”, “Master of Music”, “Rockacademie” en “Academie voor Muziekeducatie”.

Raf De Keninck worked as conductor throughout Europe and recorded CDs for labels, such as “Phaedra” and “Vander Krieken Classics”. As conductor and clarinettist he created dozens of works that can be heard on radio recordings and CD productions. Furthermore, he acts as director of the music department at the Fontys University of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg. This department is part of an art campus and accommodates “Academy of Music and Performing Arts”, “Master of Music”, “Rock Academy” and “Academy of Music Education”.www.rafdekeninck.be


Pavel EliashevichSint-Petersburg – RuslandPavel Eliashevich studeerde piano en kamerensemble aan het Conservatorium van St. Petersburg. Hij won prijzen in verschillende internationale wedstrijden, is concertpianist en artistiek directeur van het kamermuziekensemble “Musica Da Camera” uit St. Petersburg. Hij doceert piano en kamermuziek aan de Herzen muziekuniversiteit in St. Petersburg en geeft masterclasses over de hele wereld. Hij is tevens jurylid in verschillende nationale en internationale wedstrijden.

Pavel Eliashevich studied piano and chamber ensemble at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He is a prize-winner of various international competitions, concert pianist and artistic director of “Musica Da Camera” Chamber Ensemble of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society”. He is professor of piano and chair of chamber ensemble at the Herzen University Institute of Music in St. Petersburg and gives master classes all over the world. He is a jury member of several international competitions.

Aygül GünaltaySint-Amandsberg/Istanbul – België/Turkije Aygül Günaltay is pianiste, professor, departementshoofd klassieke muziek en directrice van het Conservatorium van Istanbul. Ze is als pianodocent verbonden aan de Belgische Halewynstichting en werkte haar bachelor-, master- en doctoraatsstudies af aan het Conservatorium van Istanbul, het Mozarteum (AT) en de Lübeck Muziekacademie (DE). Haar academische carriere startte aan het Conservatorium van Istanbul waar ze nu professor is voor zowel theoretische als praktijkvakken piano(repertoire), begeleiding, kamermuziek, onderzoeksmethodologie, seminarie en presentatie methodologie. Verder is zij promotor/jurylid van diverse binnen- en buitenlandse master en PhD onderzoeksprojecten. Ze is ook professioneel performer van solorecitals en kamermuziekconcerten in binnen- en buitenland en is stichtend lid van twee kamermuziekgroepen.

Aygül Günaltay is pianist, professor and acts as head of classical music and Director of the Istanbul University State Conservatory in Turkey. As piano teacher she is also affiliated to the Belgian “Halewynstichting”. She finished her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies at the Istanbul University State Conservatory, the Mozarteum (AT) and the Lübeck Academy of Music (DE). Her academic career began at the IU State Conservatory where she now acts as professor for both theoretical and practical majors piano (repertoire), guidance, chamber music, research methodology, seminar and presentation methodology. Furthermore she acts as promoter/jury of various national and international master and PhD research projects. On a professional level she also performs solo recitals and chamber music concerts at home and abroad and is a founding member of two chamber music groups.


Willy Fransen*Zolder – BelgiëWilly Fransen studeerde trompet en piano aan het Stedelijk Muziekconservatorium van Hasselt en het Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij vervolmaakte zich in hafabra-directie en was actief als docent, componist, arrangeur en dirigent bij verschillende harmonieorkesten in België en Nederland. Met zijn eerste harmonieorkest promoveerde hij van de allerlaagste afdeling tot de concertafdeling op het WMC te Kerkrade, wat hem een ereburgerschap opleverde.

Willy Fransen studied trumpet and piano at the Music Conservatory of Hasselt and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. He perfected himself in wind band conducting and was active as a teacher, composer, orchestrator and conductor at various harmonies in Belgium and the Netherlands. With his first wind orchestra he promoted from the lowest level to the concert department of the WMC in Kerkrade, which earned him an honorary citizenship.www.willy-fransen.be

Luc GoosMeerhout – BelgiëLuc Goos studeerde percussie, kamermuziek, harmonie, contrapunt en fuga aan het Conservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij doceert diverse percussievakken aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium voor Muziek, Woord en Dans van Hasselt en aan de Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans van Geel. Muzikaal is hij daarnaast vooral actief als arrangeur en componist voor de vele slagwerkensembles die onder zijn leiding staan.

Luc Goos studied percussion, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint and fugue at the Antwerp Conservatory. He teaches various percussion courses at the Conservatory for Music, Word and Dance in Hasselt and at the City Academy for Music, Word and Dance in Geel. Musically, on top of that, he is mainly active as orchestrator and composer for the many percussion ensembles under his lead.

Sabine HaenebalckeVloesberg – BelgiëIn de eerste jaren als uitvoerend musicus verwierf pianiste Sabine een uitstekende reputatie als uitmuntend Chopin-vertolker en was ze een gewaardeerd partner in diverse kamermuziek- formaties. Later schoolde ze zich bij als koor- en orkestdirigente bij onder meer Nicolas Brochot (FR), Pierre Cao (LU), en Laszlo Heltay (GB). In 1997 debuteerde zij als orkestdirigent aan het hoofd van het Symfonieorkest van Vlaanderen. Ondertussen behoren de meeste grote oratoria van o.a. Bach, Verdi, Brahms, Fauré, Webber, Michael Tippett tot haar repertoire, maar creëerde ze eveneens diverse composities van Vlaamse componisten. Zij is ere-docente piano aan het MUDA te Gent.

In her first years as a performing musician pianist Sabine acquired an excellent reputation as superb Chopin interpreter and she was an appreciated partner in various chamber music formations. Later she took lessons to become choral and orchestral conductor at Nicolas Brochot (FR), Pierre Cao (LU), and Laszlo Heltay (GB). In 1997 she debuted as Orchestra conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders. Nowadays, most major oratorios of Bach, Verdi, Brahms, Fauré, Webber, Michael Tippett are part of her repertoire, but she also wrote several compositions of Flemish composers. She acts as Honorary Professor for piano at the MUDA in Ghent.

Alexander JiménezTallahassee - USAAlexander Jiménez doceert koor- en orkestdirectie aan de “Florida State University College of Music”. Dankzij zijn dynamische en veelzijdige podiumpresentatie nam hij deel aan orkest-uitvoeringen in de USA, Europa en het Midden-Oosten zoals België, Oostenrijk, Tsjechische Republiek, Israël en Italië. Hij heeft met lovende kritieken opgenomen op “Naxos”, “Neos”, “Mark” en het “CBC-Ovation label”. Als gewaardeerd leraar wordt hij vaak gevraagd als gastdirigent, docent en jurylid van jeugdorkesten en jurypannels in the VS en Europa.

Alexander Jiménez serves as professor of conducting and director of orchestral studies at the Florida State University College of Music. A dynamic and versatile podium presence, Jiménez has appeared with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East including engagements in Belgium, Austria, the Czech Republic, Israel, and Italy. He has recorded to critical acclaim on the Naxos, Neos, Mark, and CBC-Ovation labels. A highly-respected educator, Jiménez is in demand as a guest conductor, teacher and adjudicator with youth orchestras and adjudication panels throughout the US and Europe.


Xenophon KelseyRipon – Verenigd KoninkrijkXenophon Kelsey studeerde hoorn, contrabass, piano en directie in Manchester, Wenen, Salzburg en Montreux. Hij was oprichter, dirigent en muzikant van menig ensemble en is gespecialiseerd in het werken met jonge muzikanten. Hij stichtte meer dan 20 jaren geleden de “Vacation Chamber Orchestras” en dirigeerde hen tijdens verschillende tournees in Europa en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Hij is een ervaren jurylid en kreeg in 2009 een MBE voor zijn diensten aan muziek en de muziekopleiding.

Xenophon Kelsey studied horn, double bass, piano and conducting in Manchester, Vienna, Salzburg and Montreux. He has been founder, conductor and player with many orchestras and ensembles and has specialized in working with young musicians. He founded, over 20 years ago, the Vacation Chamber Orchestras and has conducted them on many tours throughout Europe and the UK. He is also an experienced adjudicator and was awarded in 2009 an MBE for his services to music and music education.www.xenmus.net

Wouter LenaertsBrussel – BelgiëWouter Lenaerts studeerde muziekschriftuur, harmonieleer, contrapunt en fuga, piano, hafabra-directie, compositie en symfonische directie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel. Hij doceert muziekschriftuur en analyse voor dirigenten en is als componist internationaal bekend. Hij is artistiek leider van het orkest “symphoniaASSAI” en regelmatig gastdirigent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Wouter Lenaerts studied composition, harmony, counterpoint and fugue, piano, wind band conducting, composition and symphonic conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He now teaches music composition and analysis for conductors and is internationally renowned as a composer. Martien MaasVlierden – Nederland Martien Maas is pianist, dirigent en muziekpedagoog. Hij studeerde klassiek piano aan het Brabants Conservatorium te Tilburg en volgde verschillende masterclasses. Hij behaalde zijn bachelordiploma klassiek piano en het diploma piano uitvoerend musicus. Bovendien behaalde hij de diploma’s aantekening begeleiden, hafa-directie en schoolmuziek, eveneens aan het Brabants Conservatorium. Hij is actief als solo-pianist, als begeleider en als dirigent in binnen- en buitenland. Hij wordt vaak geïnviteerd als begeleider bij masterclasses en audities. Momenteel is hij als correpetitor en als voorzitter van de examencommissie verbonden aan het Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg. Daarnaast is hij dirigent en freelance pianist.

Martien Maas is pianist, conductor and music pedagogue. He studied classical piano at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg and attended several master classes. He got his bachelor’s degree classical piano and a diploma performing piano musician. He also obtained the diplomas annotation guidance, hafa-conducting and school music also at the Brabant Conservatory. He acts as solo pianist, as guide and as a conductor at home as well as abroad. He is often invited as supervisor at master classes and auditions. He currently acts as correpetitor and as president of the examination committee attached to the Fontys Conservatory in Tilburg. He is also conductor and freelance pianist.

Peter MerckxSint-Denijs-Westrem - BelgiëPeter is een veelzijdig, nieuwsgierig instrumentalist; van saxofoon tot basklarinet, van klassiek tot jazz. Hij is dirigent van het symfonisch orkest van de Academie voor Podiumkunsten te Gent en richtte Duo Roosemeyers op, een kwartet gespecialiseerd in ‘Klezmer’ muziek. Een constante in zijn leven is de liefde voor hedendaagse kamermuziek met het ‘Hermes-ensemble’. De oprichting van ‘MyPMinternational’ in 2012 is het resultaat van zijn lange persoonlijke research naar een betere houding en grip bij het bespelen van de klarinet. De duim-fix is zijn persoonlijke uitvinding.

Peter is a versatile, curious instrumentalist; ranging from saxophone to bass clarinet, from classical music to jazz. He acts as conductor of the symphonic orchestra of the Academy of performing arts in Ghent and founded Duo Roosemeyers, a Quartet specialized in ‘Klezmer’ music. A constant in his life is the love for contemporary chamber music with the ‘Hermes ensemble’. The set up of ‘MyPMinternational’ in 2012 is a result of his long personal research to better posture and grip when playing the clarinet. Nico Neyens*Neerpelt – BelgiëNico Neyens studeerde klarinet, muziektheorie en kamermuziek aan het Conservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij is een gewezen leraar klarinet, kamermuziek en coördinator aan de Kunstacademie Noord-Limburg en oprichter van het gelijknamig orkest. Hij fungeert als gastdirigent en jurylid in Europa, China en Zuid-Afrika.

Nico Neyens studied clarinet, music theory and chamber music at the Antwerp Conservatory. He is a former teacher clarinet, chamber music and coordinator of the Art Academy Noord-Limburg as well as founder of the eponymous orchestra. He acts as a guest conductor and member of jury in Europe, China and South Africa.

Stefan MeylaersHasselt – BelgiëStefan Meylaers, genomineerd kunstenaar in Hollywood & Carnegie Hall, is actief als pianist, componist, docent, producent, gastdocent en jurylid en is verbonden aan het Stedelijk Muziekconservatorium van Hasselt. Hij behaalde verschillende nominaties in binnen- en buitenland zoals Hollywood, New Delhi en Saint-Tropez. Stefan Meylaers, Hollywood Nominee & Carnegie Hall artist is active as pianist, composer, instructor, producer, guest lecturer and jury member and is associated with the Music Conservatory of Hasselt. He received various nominations at home and abroad as in Hollywood, New Delhi and Saint-Tropez. Janis Purins studied trumpet and orchestra conducting at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music where he now is assistant professor and leader of the wind orchestra conducting class. He is conductor of the Cesis Symphonic Band and the wind band at the Latvian University. He is a guest conductor of several international bands and is board member of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE).

Hij is trompetleraar, dirigent en oprichter van het schoolblaasorkest “Allegra”. Hij is commissielid van de Muziekschool in Zurich en jurylid in menig nationale en internationale wedstrijd.

Beat Simeon studied trumpet at the Conservatory of Zürich and conducting at the Music Academy of Zürich. He is active as trumpet teacher and conductor and founded the School Wind Orchestra “Allegra”. He is a commission member of the Music School in Zürich and juror in various national and international competitions.


Richard SutcliffeMechelen – BelgiëRichard Sutcliffe, opgeleid als violist en muziekleerkracht aan de “Crane School of Music” in Potsdam, New York, studeerde viola da gamba aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel. Hij vervolgde zijn studies oude muziek en musicologie aan het Orpheus Instituut te Gent en de universiteit van Huddersfield. Hij publiceerde onderzoeken en drie boeken over de viola da gamba. Momenteel focust zijn interesse zich in onderzoek op de 19de eeuwse vioolscholen en het herscheppen van hun technieken. Hij doceert viola da gamba aan de Koninklijke Conservatoria van Brugge en Mechelen en is researchbemiddelaar aan de bibliotheek van het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel. Hij is een freelance bespeler van de viola da gamba en de historische viool.

Richard Sutcliffe, trained as violinist and music educator at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York, studied viola da gamba at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He has furthered his studies of early music performance and musicology at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent and the University of Huddersfield. He has published research on the viola da gamba as well as three books of graded solos for the instrument. His research interests have recently focused on the 19th century Belgian violin school and recreating their techniques. He teaches viola da gamba at the Conservatoires of Bruges and Mechelen and is research facilitator at the library of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He is a freelance performer on viola da gamba and historical violin.

Piotr SuttGdansk - Polen Piotr Sutt, professor (Ph. D.) kan omschreven worden als solo percussionist, kamermuzikant, hoofd paukenist, leraar, onderzoeker, cultureel animator en promotor van muziek als kunst. Sinds 2016 is hij hoofd van de percussieafdeling van de Muziekacademie van Lodz. Sinds 27 jaar is hij ook hoofd paukenist van de Poolse Kamerfilharmonie en stichter en leider van het “Gdansk Jeunesses Musicales Percussion Ensemble”. Hij is auteur van verschillende projecten gebaseerd op de muzikale verwezenlijkingen, percussie-instrumenten en percussie-electronica, te gebruiken in kunsttherapie en de heractivatie van kinderen en volwassenen als kankerpatiënt. Drie jaren geleden werd hij erkend als “Vernieuwend Percussieartiest”.

Professor Piotr Sutt (Ph. D.)- soloist, chamber musician, principal timpanist, teacher, researcher, cultural animator and a promoter of music art. Since 2016 he acts as head of the percussion department at the Music Academy in Lodz. For 27 years, he is the principal timpanist of the Polish Chamber Philharmonic and founder and leader of the “Gdansk Jeunesses Musicales Percussion Ensemble”. He is author of numerous projects based on musical achievements, such as percussion instruments and percussion electronics to be used in art-therapy and re-activation of children and adults suffering from cancer. Three years ago, he was acknowledged as “Innovative Percussion Artist”.

Dejan TamsePolzela – Slovenië Dejan Tamse studeerde percussie aan de Muziekacademie van Ljubljana en is percussieleraar in de Muziekschool “Risto Savin” in Zalec. Hij is stichtend lid van SToP, een Sloveens percussie-project waarmee hij sinds 1999 wereldwijd optredens verzorgt. Ze werden in 2013 bekroond met de Župančič award en in 2014 met de Prešeren Foundation Award. Hij is artistiek directeur van het BUMfest, een internationaal percussiefestival in Slovenië.

Dejan Tamse studied percussion at the Academy for Music in Ljubljana and teaches percussion at the music school Risto Savin in Zalec. Voorafgaand was hij lid van de bekroonde kwartetten “Badke” en “Bronte”. Daarnaast, wordt hij regelmatig gevraagd als eerste altviolist van het “London Philharmonic Orchestra”, het “English Chamber Orchestra”, van het “Londen Philharmonic Orchestra”, het “Philharmonia”, het “English Chamber Orchestra”, het “Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra” en de “London Mozart Players”. Hij doceert altviool en kamermuziek aan de Koninklijke Muziek- academie in Londen en doceerde dit eerder aan het Koninklijke Muziekcollege en het Koninklijke Welsh Muziekcollege. Jon gaf masterclasses in Brazilië, Portugal, Spanje, Finland, USA en VK en jureerde in binnen- en buitenland. Sinds 10 jaren is hij als jurylid verbonden aan ons EMJ.

Jon Thorne studied at the Royal- and London College of Music and is violinist in the Oculi Ensemble. Previously he was a member of the award winning Badke and Bronte Quartets. In addition, he is a regular Guest Principal Viola for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and London Mozart Players. He is Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the Royal Academy of Music, London having previously taught at the Royal College of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music. Jon has given Masterclasses in Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Finland, the USA and the UK. Dirk Van GinderenEssen – BelgiëDirk Van Ginderen is leraar dwarsfluit, samenspel en instrumentaal ensemble in de Academie voor muziek en woord te Ekeren. Van 1990 tot 2013 was hij dirigent van het Academie orkest Deurne waarmee hij 13 Europese concertreizen maakte, deelnam aan wedstrijden in binnen-en buitenland en waarmee hij in 2011 en 2013 een 1ste prijs cum laude behaalde tijdens het EMJ. Hij is voormalig dirigent van diverse harmonie-orkesten in België en Nederland en was als fluitist verbonden aan de Operette vereniging in Bergen Op Zoom en de concertband van Vlaanderen.

Dirk Van Ginderen teaches German flute, Harmony and instrumental ensemble at the Music and Word Academy in Ekeren. From 1990 until 2013 he acted as conductor of the Academic Orchestra Deurne with which he made 13 European concert trips, participated in many contests at home as well as abroad and with which he won a 1st prize cum laude at the EMJ in 2011 and 2013. He also acted as conductor of several brass bands in Belgium and the Netherlands and as flutist was associated with the operetta Association in Bergen Op Zoom and the Flanders Concert Band.

Maarten WeylerSint-Amandsberg - BelgiëMaarten Weyler is professioneel bassist, docent aan de School of Arts – Koninklijk Conservatorium in Gent en cultureel educator bij de Halewynstichting. Hij studeerde aan Berklee College of Music (VS) en studeerde af aan de Gentse Rijksuniversiteit als licentiaat in de kunstgeschiedenis, richting musicologie en als master in de archeologie. Hij is stichter van Jazz-Studio, de eerste Belgische volledige hogere dagopleiding voor jazz, is theorie- en praktijkdocent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Gent en promotor van verschillende muziekonderzoeksprojecten. Hij doceerde aan het Conservatorium van Istanbul en ontwikkelde er het jazz programma. Momenteel is hij ook coordinator en docent aan het Kanazawa jazz-camp (JP) en verantwoordelijk voor allerlei lessenreeksen, workshops en andere vormingsactiviteiten.

Maarten Weyler is professional bassist, acts as lecturer at the School of Arts - Royal Conservatory in Ghent and is cultural educator at the “Halewynstichting”. He studied at Berklee College of Music (USA) and graduated from the University of Ghent with a Master’s degree in art history, musicology and as master in archaeology. He founded Jazz-Studio, the first Belgian high school for jazz, acts as theoretical and practical teacher at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent and as promoter of various music research projects. He taught at the Istanbul University State Conservatory and developed their jazz program. At present he also acts as coordinator and lecturer at Kanazawa jazz-camp (JP) and is responsible for all kinds of courses, workshops and other training activities.


Filip VerneertMerelbeke – BelgiëFilip Verneert behaalde zijn masterdiploma in de pedagogische wetenschappen aan de Koninklijke Universiteit van Leuven en studeerde jazzgitaar aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel. Hij is als PhD researcher en docent verbonden aan de Onderzoeksgroep Music Education & Therapy, LUCA School of Arts - KU Leuven en is afgevaardigd bestuurder van “Muziekmozaïek”.

Filip Verneert gained a master’s degree of educational sciences at the Royal University of Louvain and studied jazz guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. As PhD researcher and lecturer, he is connected to the research group Music Education & Therapy, LUCA School of Arts- KU Louvain and acts as Managing Director of “Muziekmozaïek”.

André WillemsNeerpelt – BelgiëAndré Willems studeerde slagwerk en piano aan het Conservatorium van Antwerpen en was muzikant in meerdere orkesten en bigbands. Daarnaast was hij docent muziekvakken en esthetica en als dirigent succesvol betrokken bij diverse orkesten. Hij is een veelgevraagd jurylid voor mars- en podiumconcerten, muziekanalyses en solistenoptredens in zowel binnen- als buitenland.

André Willems studied percussion and piano at the Antwerp Conservatory and was a musician in several orchestras and big bands. He taught music and aesthetics and was successful as conductor in various orchestras. He is a wanted juror for march and stage concerts, music analysis and solo performances at home as well as abroad.

Elke reeks bestaat uit een gewone reeks en een wimpelreeks. Voor de wimpelreeks komen enkel ensembles in aanmerking die tijdens een internationaal festival een opvallend resultaat behaalden of minstens een grondige artistieke ervaring kunnen aantonen.

Each category is divided in a standard and a pennant category. To qualify for the pennant series the ensembles must have gained a remarkable result at an international festival or at least be able to show a thorough artistic experience.

De maximumleeftijd van de deelnemers bedraagt 28 jaar.

The maximum age of the participants is fixed on 28 years.

BEOORDELINGENREVIEWS

Een gerenommeerde, internationale jury beoordeelt op een constructieve manier de muzikale prestaties van de deelnemers. Na het Festival wordt een juryverslag verstuurd.

A prominent international jury will evaluate the performance of the participants from a constructive angle. A jury report will be sent after the Festival.

Het diploma vermeldt:

Eerste prijs “summa cum laude” (1SCL) = voor ensembles die 98, 99 of 100 % behalenEerste prijs “cum laude” (1CL) = voor ensembles die 90 tot 97 % behalenEerste prijs (1) = voor ensembles die 80 tot 89 % behalenTweede prijs (2) = voor ensembles die 70 tot 79 % behalenDerde prijs (3) = voor ensembles die 60 tot 69 % behalenVermelding = voor ensembles die 59 % of minder behalen

Ensembles met 90% of meer ontvangen tevens de festivalmedaille.Groepen die op eigen verzoek deelnemen ‘buiten categorie’ ontvangen enkel een getuigschrift van deelname en worden als dusdanig vernoemd tijdens de proclamatie.

De Kick-off is de officiële start van het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd. Leerlingen van de Peltse basisscholen heten met het festivallied “Sing this song” de vele internationale deelnemers welkom om samen van een sprankelende muzikale show te genieten. Daarnaast zorgen de zangers van de Belgische a-capellagroep Voice Male voor het muzikale entertainment. Iedereen is alvast van harte welkom. De toegang is gratis.

The Kick-off is the official start of the European Music Festival for Young People. By singing the festival song “Sing this song”, pupils of the elementary schools of Pelt will welcome the many international participants to enjoy a sparkling musical show. Furthermore, the singers of the Belgian a capella band Voice Male will provide some musical entertainment. You are all very welcome. Free admittance.

Ook dit jaar zorgt het EMJ, in samenwerking met regionale traiteurs, handelaars, verenigingen, culturele partners en het gemeentebestuur van Pelt, voor een compleet totaalspektakel en topcatering. Naast het smullen van allerlei lekkernijen, hapjes en drankjes, kunnen de aanwezigen ook genieten van sfeervolle muziek verzorgd door het ensemble “Guitarillon”, de leerlingen van de Muziekhumaniora Musart! en de a-capellagroep Voice Male.

Next to tasting all kinds of delicacies, snacks and drinks, you can enjoy atmospheric music provided by the students of the music school Musart! and the a capella band Voice Male.

GuitarillonGuitarillon is een verrassende combinatie van beiaard en gitaar; twee instrumenten die op het eerste gezicht weinig met elkaar te maken hebben. Toch passen de klankkleuren perfect bij elkaar. De Neerpeltse beiaardier Jan Verheyen neemt de jonge beloftevolle gitarist Cedric Honings mee naar de beiaard-cabine boven in de toren, waar ze samen spelen. De gitaar

wordt van daaruit versterkt. Het programma dat ze brengen is erg gevarieerd met muziek van Bach tot Nirvana. Laat u verrassen door een jazz- of rockmedley.

Guitarillon is a surprising combination of carillon and guitar; two instruments which at first sight have little to do with each other. Yet the sounds fit perfectly together. Neerpelt carillonneur Jan Verheyen takes the young promising guitarist Cedric Honings to the carillon-cabin at the top of the tower, where they play together. Here the guitar will be amplified. The program that they bring varies from music from Bach to Nirvana. Let us surprise you with a jazz or rock medley.

Musart on TourMusart on Tour is een project van Musart!, de Hasseltse muziekhumaniora. 50 jonge musici volgen hier hun opleiding klassiek, pop en jazz. Maar ze doen meer dan studeren. Ze hebben een heuse tournee

opgezet met voorstellingen in Praag en Wenen. Als apotheose eindigen ze hun concertreis in Neerpelt en starten ze ons EMJ met hun jeugdig muzikaal enthousiasme. EMJ en Musart! hebben dus de handen in elkaar geslagen voor een unieke samenwerking. Voor de juryconcerten schreven de studenten van de afdelingen ‘Klassiek’ en ‘Jazz’ zich in als festivaldeelnemers, juryconcerten die tevens gelden als hun humaniora-examen. De studenten samen met hun leerkrachten van de afdelingen ‘Pop’ en ‘Jazz’ zorgen voor het muzikaal entertainment tijdens A Taste of Neerpelt: een harmonieuze ontmoeting tussen diverse stijlen. Het wordt zeker en vast een uniek optreden!

The students of the departments ‘Pop’ and ‘Jazz’ along with their teachers provide the musical entertainment during A Taste of Neerpelt: a harmonious meeting of various styles. It is sure to be a unique performance!

Voice MaleVoice Male is een begrip in Vlaanderen en ver daarbuiten. Ook op het EMJ waren ze al enkele keren te gast. Maar deze keer is het toch wel heel speciaal. Na ruim twintig jaar zet Vlaanderens bekendste a-capellagroep er een punt achter. Dat vieren ze met een korte en krachtige afscheidstournee door Vlaanderen en Nederland. Op 19 mei spelen ze hun allerlaatste concert van hun allerlaatste tournee. Maar voor ze er definitief mee ophouden, wilden ze toch nog een keer naar ons EMJ terug komen.. En wie zijn wij dan om “nee” te

zeggen. Deze 6 mannen zullen opnieuw garant staan voor muziek en entertainment van topniveau en bieden zo een unieke gelegenheid om deze sfeervolle bende nog eens een laatste keer in Pelt aan het werk te zien en mee te zingen met hun aanstekelijke nummers.

Voice Male has quite a reputation in Flanders and far beyond. They already performed a few times at the EMJ, but this time is special. After more than twenty years, Flanders’ most famous a capella group will cease to exist. This is being ‘celebrated’ by a short and powerful farewell tour through Flanders and the Netherlands.On May 19th, they play their last concert of their last tour. But before they definitely stop, they wanted to come to the EMJ one more time. And who are we to say “no”. These 6 men will once again provide music and entertainment of the highest level at our festivals, giving us a unique opportunity to witness this gang in action for the last time and sing along with their catchy songs.

Gezellig nakaarten over het afgelopen Festival of nog even de benen loszwieren voor een lange busrit: dat is wat de Farewell Party is. De avond start met een Boombal, een dansfeest met live folkmuziek waarop je je kan uitleven in allerlei soorten dans zoals de wals en de polka. Onder een professionele begeleiding worden deze dansen aangeleerd en ontstaat er snel een plezante kringdans of sfeervolle sliertdans. DJ Buzz zal voor een opzwepende en spectaculaire afsluiting van de avond zorgen.

A bit of socializing after the Festival is over or loosening those stiff muscles before a long bustrip, that is what the Farewell Party aims to be. The evening starts with a “Boombal”, a dance party with live folk music during which you can let off steam with all kind of dances, such as waltz or polka. Under the guidance of professional dance instructors, these dances are taught and before you know it, you’re having fun, dancing a swing dance or a circle dance. DJ Buzz ends the evening in an exciting and spectacular way.

VERBROEDERINGSCONCERTENFRATERNIZATION CONCERTS

Sinds vele jaren brengen de verbroederingsconcerten sfeer en muziek in Neerpelt en haar buurtdorpen en laten zij een breed publiek kennismaken met de uitgebreide variatie in Europese culturen. Vrijwilligers uit Grote Heide, Herent, Boseind en Overpelt organiseren dit jaar enthousiast mee aan deze prachtige verbroederingsfeesten. De toegang van alle verbroederingsconcerten is gratis en iedereen is van harte welkom! Dus kom en geniet ervan!

Since many years, the fraternization concerts have created atmosphere and music inNeerpelt and the surrounding villages; they confront wide and diverse audiences withan extensive variety of European cultures. This year volunteers from Grote Heide, Herent,Boseind and Overpelt work with enthousiasm on the organization of thesewonderful fraternization events. There is no admission fee and everybody is welcome. So, come and enjoy!

WORKSHOPSTijdens dit 67ste EMJ zullen opnieuw met de steun van en in samenwerking met de Vlaamse muziekfederaties VLAMO en Muziekmozaïek diverse instrumentale en team-building gerelateerde workshops georganiseerd worden. Jonge muzikanten kunnen er enthousiast kennis maken met nieuwe muzikale uitdagingen en samen met andere voor hen onbekende internationale muzikanten musiceren. Zo leren ze allemaal kennis maken met allerhande nieuwe muzikale technieken en composities en zorgen workshops van body percussion, cajun en latin voor een sfeer van muzikale verbroedering.

Op zaterdag 4 en zondag 5 mei zullen 23 ensembles deelnemen aan volgende 8 workshops, allen onder de deskundige leiding van binnen- en buitenlandse docenten.

During this 67th EMJ, a range of instrumental and teambuilding related workshops, supported by VLAMO and Muziekmozaïek are organised. Youngsters are offered the opportunity to enthusiastically get to know new musical challenges and to perform together with children’s and youth ensembles from various nationalities. This way participants get acquainted with different kind of music techniques and compositions and offer workshops of body percussion, cajun and latin for an atmosphere of musical fraternization.

On Saturday 4 and Sunday May 5, 23 ensembles will participate in following 8 workshops, all presided over by Belgian and foreign lecturers.

Deze koorwedstrijd vindt tweejaarlijks plaats en vanaf dit jaar in Genk. Voor deze wedstrijd worden ongeveer de 15 topkoren uit de hele wereld geselecteerd voor twee optredens: op zaterdag het verplichte programma en op zondag een keuze uit de profane koorliteratuur.

This International Choir-contest of Flanders is a bi-annual contest to which some 15 high-standard choirs from around the world are selected to perform in two concerts: on Saturday there is the compulsory programme and on Sunday a selection from the profane choral literature.From 2019 onwards the contest will take place in Genk.

This meeting, which is not a contest, is one of the biggest European cultural festivals of various arts for children and youth. De Internationale Koorwedstrijd van VlaanderenThe International Choir Contest of FlandersMaasmechelen, België (BE)

Deze koorwedstrijd vindt tweejaarlijks plaats in Maasmechelen. Voor deze wedstrijd worden om en bij de 15 topkoren uit de hele wereld geselecteerd voor twee optredens: op zaterdag het verplichte programma en op zondag een keuze uit de profane koorliteratuur.

The International Choir-contest of Flanders-Maasmechelen is a bi-annual contest to which some 15 high-standard choirs from around theworld are selected to perform in two concerts: on Saturday there is the compulsory programme and on Sunday a selection from the profane choral literature.

Het “Cork International Choral Festival” nodigt jaarlijks amateurkoren uit de hele wereld, competitief en niet-competitief, uit voor 5 dagen vol koorconcerten, nationale en internationale wedstrijden, samenkomsten, een koorsymposium, workshops, masterclasses en meet & greets. Ook zullen een aantal van de fi jnste amateurjeugdkoren geselecteerd worden om deel te nemen aan de prestigieuze “Fleishmann International Trophy”.
