Title

• B1-102 Reduction of magnetic field levels on joint graves

Summary

• This paper reports about an underground 220 kV cable link across the urban area of Buenos Aires. The magnetic field levels requested by local utilities are half of the regulatory national level. The whole link is under this limit with the exception of the joint bays. Thus mitigation techniques have to be applied. Passive loops are preferred, as most cost effective solution, to ferromagnetic plates or increased depth of laying. The original magnetic fields are reduced by more than 50%. On field measured values are consistent with foreseen calculated values.

Innovative elements:

• Calculation results regarding magnetic shielding methods around cables. Passive loop effectiveness was calculated and measured as a check. In the end, max. magnetic field was 2.5 uT for 220 kV, 300 MVA

• B1-104 Availability and risk assessment of 380 kV cable systems in transmission grids

Summary

• Construction of a long 380 kV double circuit in The Netherlands lead the local TSO to investigate the behaviour of EHV cables in a transmission grid; this study was made with cooperation from other TSOs and the results are reported in the paper. The risk position of the Utility can be improved either by reducing the outage duration and/or the failure rate. Failure rate can be decreased by quality assurance procedures (at design, manufacturing, testing and operation stages). Reducing the impact of failure, by acting at component level (e.g.explosion-free terminations), taking measures for reducing the repair time (reactive teams, spare management, etc…) are also important for decreasing the total outage time.

Innovative elements:

• Strategic consideration of reliability and quality management of 400 kV power cables

Interessante papers Title

• B1-105 Guide to sheath bonding design, in distribution and transmission lines with HV underground cables

Summary

• Increasing use of HV underground cables in large cities, increasing fault currents and increasing lengths of elementary cable sections make necessary the need to have proper design criteria for both the SVLs and the insulation level of cable system components. A software package has been developed for calculating the metallic sheath overvoltages in different standard configurations and for different short circuit currents. A guide has been issued from these calculations for use in practical cases occurring on HV system up to220 kV.

Innovative elements:

• Actually not many, but this is a good overview of short circuit situations in HV power cables, addressing voltages/currents in complex bonded cable circuits, and addressing the ways to select SVL's

Title

• B1-108 Design and installation of one section of Anhanguera - Casa Verde underground transmission line -138

Summary

• Special accessories are often a good solution to overcome particular issues is specific projects. An application case is presented in this paper: two cable sections with respectively one and two cables per phase had to be connected; different solutions were studied and finally T-joints were used. The paper describes the joint itself, its physical arrangement in the joint chamber, the changes made to the grounding system. It also gives a general overview of possible advantages in using T-joints..

Innovative elements:

• Usage of T-Joints to connect 1 phase cable to 2 phase cables

Title

• B1-109 EHV cable installation technology for tunnels and ducts in Japan

Summary

• The paper gives a comprehensive description of technological issues to be considered in cable installations in tunnels and ducts, particularly when long-lengths are involved. Various subjects are discussed, including effective use of existing infrastructure, new joint installation technologies for existing narrow manholes and installation technologies for vertical shafts. Also comparisons between technologies, tests on mock-up assemblies and practical experience are reported.

Innovative elements:

• Overview of Japanese experience with HV cables in tunnels

Interessante papers Title

• B1-202 Pneumatic testing of the insulation of low-voltage underground cables

Summary

• Low Voltage (LV) cables may easily suffer damages during handling and pulling. The paper presents a new method of verifying the condition of the insulation of installed LV cables by injecting compressed air into the cable core and then checking how well pressure is maintained. Three variants of the same method are presented. Defective insulation is detected by a drop in pressure. Method has been proven with an extensive laboratory test program, and then prototype testers have been successfully used on the underground distribution system.

Innovative elements:

• New test method to ensure quality of LV power cables, using air pressure

Interessante papers Title

• B1-207 Condition assessment of synthetic insulated cables and accessories operating more than 20 years in the French network

Summary

• Ageing evaluation of cable assets is often a main concern for TSOs. The paper reports a French experience, where cooperation with manufacturers allowed the appraisal of the status of synthetic insulated cables and accessories removed from the field. To obtain significant data, cable and accessory samples have been randomly picked out; physical and chemical properties and electrical performance of different components have been investigated and compared to their initial conditions. Similar characteristics have been globally found, with a few exceptions which are currently still under evaluation.

Innovative elements:

• Full evaluation of ageing of extruded cables by performing mechanical, electrical, chemical and overall tests on the cable system including accessories.

Interessante papers Title

• B1-210 Condition and remaining life of taped transmission cables through non-invasive and invasive testing based on in-service cables and cable samples removed from service

Summary

• The authors draw the reader’s attention to the large number of taped cables that have exceeded their 40-year design life limit but are still part of the High Voltage US underground transmission system; this lead to the need of condition and life assessment of taped cables. The paper covered non-invasive testing which included dissolved gas analysis (DGA), and fluid testing. It also covered invasive testing on removed samples, like visual inspection and a number of possible tests and measurements. The result of this testing program concluded that DGA is an effective tool for condition assessment of laminated cable whilst invasive testing on cable samples may help to better understand the cable’s condition and its remaining life.

Innovative elements:

• Overview of USA paper cable experience with DGA. We can learn indicators for reduced condition of paper taped cables.

Interessante papers Title

• B1-215 Integrated development and assessment of new thermoplastic high voltage power cable systems

Summary

• In this paper Authors discuss the better results in terms of whole life performance obtained by new high temperature and recyclable thermoplastic cables for HV. Dedicated software has been used to assess performance, with assumptions on production process and work conditions. It is reported that with this new generation of cables, the conductor cross sections could be reduced, but losses would increase. Savings in terms of energy by using thermoplastic materials are announced, both for the material production process and the cable production process. Performance improvements and savings, in terms of total CO2 reduction(for whole product life) are calculated (as a percentage) compared to current XLPE cables.

Innovative elements:

• New cable design using recyclable plastics as insulator instead of XLPE, leading to better performing cables. Next to this, usage of a new 'LEETS method' to compare different cable technology on multiple criteria.

• B1-301 Superconducting medium-voltage cables for urban power supply as an alternative scenario to 110 kV installations

Summary

• The purpose of this paper is to show the results of a comprehensive study that was carried out to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of the use of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cables in highly populated areas. The study includes a preliminary investigation of the target grid, thus being able to compare different solutions (overhead and underground, HV and MV, conventional and HTS cables). Conceptual design of superconductive cables and relevant accessories is presented, with focus on a system capabl eof carrying a permanent current of 2310 A at 10 kV. A specific study is based on the example of the inner city of Essen, Germany, and which is now developing into a proper pilot project that will include HTS cables as part of the local MV grid.

Innovative elements:

• details regarding economic feasibility of HTS cables are given, Germany is conducting pilot project of 1 km in lenght, which may be successful, feasibility study outline is given.
