Dear Christiao Friends,Ihe follcpwing quotations from CHRISTIAN READER (April-May), reallystruck home Co me. "Hiey point out a pathetic situation in the church."Practically nothing is being produced by the church to teachChrist iani ty to the non-Christian." When we read our own churchpublications, we see how very true this really is . Vfhat we produce isnearly all intended for Christian readers. This is even true of manyof our tracts. Added to this is the fact that a perverted religion ismost active teaching i ts false doctrines, much to our shame. "Duringthe past twenty years the Jehovah's Uittnesses have grown over 300percent. It is not incidental that this sect owns the largest privatelyowned printing presses in the world," To top all this, the writer addsa final thought to make us quake at our neglect. "Russia has publishedtwo pieces of propaganda for every man, woman and child living in theworld." What are we doing to win the world for Christ?*Since our last news letter, we have been really busy preparing to printtwo of our lesson books and accompanying tracts in several Europeanlanguages. The French is already printed. The Portuguese is ready to besec up for the camera, and the translators are b*isy with the Spanish,German and Italian. I t will not be possible to properly set up thePortuguese, German and Spanish with our present typewri ter as i t is aaolder model and does not accept the balls with these languages. As thenew models are compatible to these type balls, we presently plan to sellthis machine and to replace i t with the newer model. We have also thoughtof purchasing an IBM Selectric Composer in i ts place, but at present wedo not have funds for this large a purchase. The South Africa deliveredprice on the composer is about $4500. The replacement typewriter will bethe f i r s t purchase from the "MABEL NICHOLS MEMORIAL FUND".

How can correspondence lessons be followed up?Several means of arranging a personal contact when i t is

possible, are planned. Correspondence lessons and tracts arenot meant to stand alone. Both of them are used as a means ofcontacting interested prospects. The personal contact of aChris t ian teacher i s still necessary.

In every mailing of the lesson books, we include adirectory service tract, and follow up report. This is aspecially printed tract which includes the name and addressof every minister or mission station in the area of thecontact . I t includes ins t ruc t ions tha t the s tudent must go tothe nearest minister on the l i s t where he can be taught moreand can be baptised for the forgiveneso of sino, and also aportion for the minister to complete when the prospect isbaptized- so that i t can be mailed back to ourselves. Thisenables us to keep our f i les more completely.

The third book contains at the close, a notation that i fthe student wishes to study further, he should contact themini s t e r i a l Bible School and the address i s wri t ten or rubberstamped in. Many of our students have been ministers of otherchurches or men who want to t rain for the ministry, thoughfor various reasons only a few of the more sincere actuallydo become ministers of the Mew Testamant Church. Some ofthose who have, have been some of our best men, and"we~^stilirlook forward to making contact with men to minister in someof the home areas where we do not presently have churches in

If the missionary has in mind opening a new country forthe Lord's work, he can do the same thing there, simply byusing the address cards selected by country. The missionariesrecently visiting Malawi with the hope of planting a new worktook with them a l i s t of addresses drawn from our files. Hadthey wished to do so, they could have mailed announcements ofthe i r coming ahead.

We Kave one last means which can be used to encourage anindigenous work in remote areas where i t is not possible todirect the student to a church or to go personally. This isoften true when there are thousands of contacts as in correspondence work. In this case, we have a specially preparedt rac t which we enclose with the return of the l as t lessonbook in the ser iea. This t rac t carries de ta il ed ins truc tionson how to go rf)0ut establishing a new congregation of thechurch, with special emphasis being given to the observance-of the ordinances, how to conduct services, how to performbaptisms, and scriptures to use at these services and atb u r i a l s .

Correspondence lessons are a tool for the making ofcontact. They are not meant to do the whole work. They areto be followed up with a personal contact with the studentif this is at a l l possible, though not necessarily by themissionary personally. The follow up may be by others, evenas Paul planted, Apollos watered! but God gave the increase.

Our little efforts will not be any great challenge, at this stage, to theJ.W. or to the non-Christian world, but all things must start somewhereand at least i t is a start toward a great need, and i t is a start toward'sthe answer of our own prayers. Won't you pray with us?Another answer to these same prayers has been indicated in an outstandingoffer made for our nine year old A.B. Dick as a trade in on a ouch largerand much faster Davidson 700 dualith. Ihe local dealer has offered us athird of our original purchase price! Some help is beginning to arrive back on the field in so far as the localchurch work is concerned. The Cooks have returned to take the responsibilityof the Craighall Park work again. The D'Altons have come to take leadershipof Tulisa Park, and the Hall family is here to help in several areas. Theyhave rented an apartment near us and will be working with the Tulisa Parkcongregation as their home church. i have.made the offer to assist with the

j Street. Roger VicHroy helps there in the morningso there is no real need fo r me to be there then.Brother Stamm hM resigned there and has moved to Durban where he is plannito start an Indian (Asiatic) work. We were happy to be able to send him a lof our Durban contacts among the Indians and he has written to tel l us of hsuccess with these. "Just a note to say thanks for the addresses of theIndians. ; I have made friends in Chatsworth and have been visitingseveral times. We are a ll set up for Lord's Days services in a home and midweek Bible study and prayer. We had prayer and study last night. God is realblessing us."

    JOHANNESBURG

    Dear Brother in C hris t :

cet t t t(CHURCH OF CHRIST POSTAL MISSION)

    P.O. Box 5135, Johannesburg

August, 1972At one time i t seemed impossible that we could come on furlough this year as wehad planned because of the lack of a replacement for the period, but, familyobligations, the need to augment our working and equipment funds in order toreach our goal of wider circulation of the study materials in other lands , andother considerations make it essential tha t we leave as soon as possible. As ourdaughter Ruth is to be married in November, we have made our plans accordinglyto leave Afr ica after her wedding, and in time to be at the Missionary Conventionat Phoenix, Arizona on November Hst> the Lord willing. Following the convention,we plan to return to Illinois to be with the family for Christmas, and to beava il ab le for speaking appointments in various areas. We had originally planned to teach a class in one of our Bible Colleges duringthis furlough. As the subject for tbi class, "The Preparation and Use of thePrinted Page in World Evangelism", one that we feel is vital that our peopletake to heart, we hope to be able to use the highl ight s of this course in asmany Bible Colleges, conventions and rallies as is possible. We now plan eightsessions which may be used for a mission class, a convention workshop, etc .Naturally, single speaking engagements will s t i l l be taked for sermon or sl idepresentation of th e work in particular. Our present goal of producing and distributing packets of correspondence lessonsand t racts on a world-wide basis makes this a distinct challenge to all Christianeverywhere. I f you would like this work to be presented to your group , pleasecontact us by return air-mail as soon as possible. The Lord willing, we expect tobe heavily booked. Use our Johannesburg address until we are actually in America.Of general interest since our las t news l e t te r , is the fact that we have been ablto have our ex^r&ting I.B.M. typewriter converted to a "compatible" machine, meaning that it is now capable of typing with the new European language type faceballs in the el i te type. This will enable us to progress with our set t ing up of tEuropean languages until furlough, when, the Lord will ing, we hope to be able to^purchase an I.B.MComposer for the work. We have already been working on the firdrafts of se^J^af^df^^wele languageso and some are in print and now available. In the meantime, we continue to distribute the African versions and to processthose which are returned to us for marking and fur ther lessons. Our-enrollment hanow, reacj^ed 66.^203 souls and the number of booklets in print 34 along withaccompanying t racts in each language.

    Yours ist J e su s

P.S. We suggest pos ting the enclosed poster on the bulletin board af ter writingfor a speaking appointment booking.

September - October miDear Christ ian Friends,Our most sincere Christmas greetings to each of you. I t appears nowthat we will be spending the Christmas season in West Sal em, the Lordwilling, and that we will be able to look forward to seeing most ofyou in the new year. We are now scheduled to leave Johannesburg byjumbo je t on the evening of the 16th of November, and to a rriv e inAmerica on th e 18 th .We have been exceptionally busy these past weeks in making arrangementsto be away for nearly a year. The house had to be leased, since we werenot able sell i t as we had f i rs t planned. The furnishings will have to bestored. Materials have had to be prepared to last the duration of ourabsence, we have instructed a fr iend in the essent ia l work tha t must beattended to, and on the top of all of th is , Ruth and Edwin are to bemarried only a few days before we actually take leave. Their wedding isscheduled for the 4th of November at the Craighall Park church building.I have enclosed a calendar of our furlough period with this letter. Wewould most appreciate i t i f you would f i l l in the address of the churchand mark three most convenient dates when you would like us to plan tomake a vis i t and p re se nt th e Lord's work.
