    February, 1964Dear Fr iends ;

    When I look back at th e calendar, I see how many purelyNative functions I have been able to par t ic ipa te in this month.On the 2nd, brother Qwamongwe, the marriage of f ice r and Iwent to Bull Hil l again where we held services and two weddingswere performed. We met again in a garage, but on a di f fe ren tfarm than t he p revious visi t . I had tea and a long visi t withthe owner of the farm, another farmer who was vis i t ing tha tmorn ing and the wife from s t i l l a third farm was also present .They a l l remained and l i s tened to my sermon and the wedding.Before I l e f t the br idal couple sent a messenger with a lovelycake which they said was for the Misses, then they a l l climbedi n to th e Commer fo r th e sho r t r i d e to the o the r farm w here th esecond couple inter tained us to a feas t as well . This time Ijoined them for potatoes, r ice and meat. The drink was gingerbeer , a root beer l ike concoction with a very strong gingerf lavour. I can not drink much of i t without an upset stomach sotook only a sip o r two. Brother Qwamongwe f in ished the glass ina couple of big gulps l a ter . The ladies here.brought out a lego f lamb fo r me to br ing home. Most of the animal was hanging inthe t ree o uts id e th e house where the dogs could not reach i t .

    Brother Solane came by I f t e r in the week to invi te me to be the-Speaker fo r h isreception to be a t the local Galeshwe Village church. He suggested tha t I plan to stayonly long enough to bring the sermon as they had no idea how long the service would l a s t .Accordingly , I ar r ived a t the usual s ta r t ing t ime on the af te rnoon o f the 9th to f ind t h athey had already had communion and were j u s t ready fo r the sermon. I was able to s t a r tpreaching a lmos t immed ia te ly af te r only a song and prayer. By the time the message wasf in is he d t he re was already a fu l l house and they were bringing in benches borrowed fromother chu rches. S ince there was no place to s i t , I took his advice and lef t when I hadf in ished. They to ld me la te r tha t the serv ice was not f in ished till 9:30 in the eveningand that every inch of th e b uild in g had been f i l led toward the end.Brother Nicholson visi ted us a couple of days in the middle of the month when wewere able to discuss the buildings to be bui l t a t Galeshwe Village and the one a t GermisTo

    Again on the 23rd. brother Solane and a group of men and I went out of town. This timwe vis i t ed Jacobsdal , in the Orange Free Sta t e . There was a congregation of over a hundredmembers there who wish to become a New Testament Church only. They were part icular lyanxious about baptism . This too, was an interest ing outing. The congregation had beenwithout a m in iste r fo r nearly a year and a hal f , yet they seem to be very ac t ive . SundaySchool was in session when we arr ived there . Since they are Tswana speaking, I was ableto d i st ri bu t e t ra ct s to most of the adul ts present . I spoke on the su bjec t o f the Churchin the Bible stressing i t s worship and pract ices . Time will only t e l l the f inal outcomeof our vis i t probably, though i t appears that they shal l continue with us as a fai thfulihurch. 1 hope to hasten the print ing of the doctr ines book in Tswana so that I can sendnpicb to them for the l eaders a t l e a s t .

    During the month, we have prin ted the ser ies of t r ac ts in the Zulu and Sepedi langua^tThis makes them avai lable in eight di f ferent languages a t the present t ime. We have alsoi lone some small print ing jobs for the other missionaries and are ready to s ta r t the Gospell . ight , a b it la te this month due to the heat and dryness . (The machine does not work wellwhen th f humidity is too low .)

    Dear Fr iends ;The church a t Schmidtsdr i f t recent ly sent me word to please

    come and " in t roduce" t h e i r m in is te r to the churches o f th e a r ea .They made a great day of i t with the location church here inKimberley also taking a large delegat ion. I had 13 in the bus,and would have probably had more i f I would permit i t . We arrivesafely and the service started at 11:00 as announced. After afew hymns, I was asked to bring a short message. By this timethe building was absolutely packed with many people si t t ing outside under the scrubby trees of the area. Every church of th elocat ion had sen t del egat ions and their ministers were also present on the platform. When I had finished speaking, one of thesemen was asked to lead in p raye r. A ft er a verse of a hymn, anothespeaker was introduced and so on t i l l the end. The preachingFORWARDING AGENT: portion of the service was completed at about 3:00 only to befollowed by the bringing of the gifts and offerings. Each delegation brought a gif t from their church which they added toin the t radi t ional "penny slapping" collection. Their wholedelegation and others march past the table singing and slappingdown a penny at a time. If they have ten cents, they make thecircui t of th e church ten tim es, not the one with the cent, butthe whole group. I t then becomes rather drawn out so after abouta half an hour I went outside and took pictures and distributedt r a c t s . I was also invi ted to have a b i t of lunch s ince it wasby this time nearly four oiclock. Services were only completedat 5:00 and even then the Kimberley people with me s t i l l had tohave lunch before we could s t a r t back t o K imbe rley. One lady hadnot been there when the others were eating and had to pass herdish out the door o f the car as we were ac tua l ly dr iv ing away.Even so, I barely had time to drink a cup of coffie before leav ifor services a t Warren Street , af ter getting back home in Kimbe r l ey .

    I t had been quite a day. There had been a six hour service, heat a plenty and a verydisagreeable wind whipping up dust and dirt. I will remember i t for a long time.Our Kimberley congregation held their business meeting during the month and one ofthe accomplishments was that they approved the appointment of brother Joseph as an assist

    ant to help me, especially in the calling among the Coloured people of Kimberley. Theyhave given brother Joseph a small salary as an incentive to harder work. I am sure that hewill be a great help with the church, though there is st i l l the urgent need for a missionato take over the church since the native work and th e print ing are a ful l time task inthemselves. Likewise some of the present workmen will of necessity be taking furloughshortly and i t may be necessary to shift about a bit to keep the c lasses in operation andthe churches properly supplied with ministers during their absence. We are particularlyconcerned over the large class of students in Johannesburg.

    We published a series of four different tracts in the Nyanja and Tonga languages thismonth and another t ract in the Xhosa and Tswana languages. Most of our t racts are now bilingual. For the month ahead, the Lord willing, we have on hand the translation fo r the(OVER)

    lesson work-book in Tswana and to do the series of t rac ts in Zulu and Pedi. We alsohave the tract translation in Ntebele and hope shortly to have i t in Shona which willmake possible publication in those Rhodesian languages. The Lord has truly blessedthis tract publication ministry and He has now opened the way for us to purchase aused Varityping machine at a tremendous discount price. An import permit from theSouth African government is already on hand for this machine as well. The usedprice was $400. However, the seller has agreed to let us have i t for $300. and topack and ship i t to us . Of course i t will greatly improve the quality of the tracts,Gospel Light, and books as i t will give a wide variety of type styles and sizes aswell as simplifying the alignment of the margins. We are confident that the same Lordwho has shown us where to find i t and gotten the import permit so promptly for uswi l l a l so see to the needed funds .

    March. 1964Dear Fr iends ;

    I t seems l ike we have been rushing a l l this month. Ear lyin the month I had to get the whole month's printing donee i ther to take t o c on fe re nc e or to have ready fo r use as soonas we re turned. We did the GOSPEL LIGHT, enveloped them and hthem ready so tha t th ey co uld oe mailed on our re turn to Kimberley. I also did materials for conference i t se l f , abouttwelve hundred t rac ts , which we mailed out before we l e f t toour Tract-of- the Month-Club members, gummed posters which wedis t r ibu ted a t conference, and a thousand handbi l l s , in twocolours, announcing the ten t meetings a t Riverlea township neJohannesburg.

    We a l l are very anxiously praying for this effort . BrotheHamil ton has i nves t ed in a modes t t e n t and r e l a t ed ma te r i a l sand is planning a series of tent meetings before his furloughearly next year, the Lord will ing. This will be the f i r s t timthe church o f C hrist has attempted tent meetings sin ce theKellems-Holt team many years ago. We are planning to keep himsupplied with printed mate ria ls fo r th e publ ic i ty . This f i r s tmeeting is being held in a Coloured community of Johannesburg

    You may be curious about th e l i t t l e fellow a t the bel l - r inger above. He representsour standing on the repayment of our print ing machine loan. This is our only debt andwe are anxious to do away with i t as soon as possible that the money now going for in terest a t the bank may be applied to the actual work of the Lord. The total debt in th ebeginning was R2337.50 of which we have now paid $499. Help us to "ring" this debt outo f ex i s t e nc e .

    The Varityper pictured in las t month's l e t te r , has now a rriv ed in South Africa andrea l ly should be in Kimberley by t h i s time though we have not received any sor t ofnot i f ica t ion as yet . We are anxiously looking forward to i t s ar r iva l in the off ice aswe have two books waiting to be se t and hope to use i t on them. We are presently investigating a special font of type for i t that will make possible the p rope r sett ing of a llthe Native languages, some of which have special punctuation not in ordinary type.

    Obviously with this increasing pr in t ing work, and more suggested, we have less andless t ime to devote to the needs of the loca l congregat ion, thus we renew our requestthat you keep this need in your prayers. The white population of Kimberley, over 25,000needs i t s own minister fu l l time. We a n ti ci pa te t ha t brother Joseph w ill s ho rtly beable to minister to the Coloured population, about 14,000, as brother Solane does tothe Native people, about 28,000. All these people need the,Gospel, jus t as much so asany ci ty of America, and they have far less opportunity to learn the New Testament mesage. Pray for them, tha t there may be workers avai lable for the f ie lds .

    The Native conference is over . We arr ived a t noon Wednesday s ince we h ad Tue sd ayevening church act ivi t ies and could not leave ear l ie r . I was the opening speaker for Weevening and I t r ied to open the i r eyes to our need for greater ef fo r t toward the NewTestament ideal of the indigenous church. The whole theme th is year was on the subjectof the indigenous church. I fear, though, that we have a long way to go before the Natichurches can ever be thought of as being t h i s . Thursday morning was a race against timeas, being the treasurer at the time, I wished to collect fees and funds and get them inSERVICES: "The Gospl "N*wTestament Doctrines" - Tracts"Daily Bible Reoding Guide' Church Reference Service

    the bank befo re th ey closed a t noon for th e long week end.(Easter) 1 had no desire tohave that much money on oy person while sleeping in a tent in Johannesburg either! F rid aywas a day of business and I was to preside. The evenings, Saturday, and Sunday morningwere purely evangel is t ic in nature.

    Monday also being a holiday here, we s tayed ove r in Johannesburg and s ta r ted backto Kimberley on Tuesday; thus the new month has started with the desk pi led high withaccumulated mail, the QOSPEL LIGHT to be mailed, the books and bi l l s to be attended toand the lawn several inches high as i t real ly rained vdiile we were away. These packets were a big Job this month, but we havemanaged p len ty o f other things as well. In fact the off iceis so stacked with printed matter that a person ha s to walkcareful ly to avoid the boxes. Some will go into the mailtomorrow af ter "Republic Day" a national holiday.

    We have completed two more la nguages in the t rac t ser ies . June, 1964

    Dear Friends,Winter has descended upon us in a l l i t s fury. Muchof South Africa ha s actually been blanketed with snowand we had very severe frost result ing in many people

    having burst pipes for the f i r s t time and even frozenauto r adia tor s . We h ave ad ded an t i - f reeze to our r ad i a t o r s .We have been hovering around the heat as there are noprovisions for heating the houses here. 1 have a gas heateralmost under my cha i r a t the moment and a kerosene one backof me. They are only starting to effect the temperature ofth e room now.

The mission meeting was held inour home, though some of the missionaries had to stay at the hotel since we couldnot possibly handle all of them here. There were nineteen in all. It was a very

    good meeting and we laid plans for an emphasis on evangelism in the next year,especially in the establishing of new work and the training of the ministry forDuring the Native meeting, we laid the basic plans for conference which is tobe held at Worcester in the Cape Provence this coming year, tended to variousmatters of business and they selected their new superintendent, s ince brotherNicholson is returning to America shortly for furlough. The latter choice wasmade while we were at the hotel for our evening meal. On our return we were toldthat they had chosen me to superintend the work. It is a great responsibilityand will require much time and work. Brother Nicholson did l i t t le else than that.I shall not plan to do the traveling which he did as we have no funds for this,and certainly will not plan to do the actual construction of the church buildings

    as he did, since I know nothing of masonry. They certainly would not pass abuilding inspector if I did attempt iti There is of course the legal side of thework involving the correspondence with the Government's Offices at Pretoria,correspondence with the ministers, etc. We shall be driving to Port Shepstoneimmediately after our Revival in order to collect the files and records of thework and to bring them back to Kimberley. This is the reason our news letter isbeing prepared a few days early this month.We are happy now to have the first few pages of the Life of Chr is t Visualizedin Zulu on hand and we shall shortly be starting to set type for this. The blankpages should have arrived in South Africa already and we shall probably also getthem when we go to the coast in July for the fi les.

    July, 1964Dear Fr i ends ;

    We are enclosing th is month a l i t t l e gi f t which wethought yoti might find useful . They may be used as t r ac t s ,conversation-starters in your personal evangelism work, orsimply as placards for the bullet in board or wall. These arefree of course, but i f you would l ike more to give away, wecan pr in t and mail them to you for 1 cent each in quanitiesof a hundred. The prof i t will go toward the A.B.Dick pr in terfund. You must order them from us here though, and not fromour forwarding agent .

    We f e l t that we had a very good D.V.B.S. as we did notmake any real publicity push for i t , yet we had a high of63 in attendance and had an average of 58 present for i t .The Rev iva l was no t so wel l a t t ended and because o f th e cold nights during th e week, but i t ave raged 36 in attendancewith a high of 43 on the c lo si ng n ight . One young lady wasbaptized la ter as a resul t of a decision made during th e week.Two others are waiting for thei r parent ' s permission beforethey may be baptized. The p ar en ts are non-Christ ians.At the present time we have jus t completed preparation ona series of four new t racts prepared especially for Jehovah's Witnesses, Catholics,the Protestant Denominations, and the Jewish. In paral le l columns are given the basic

    teachings of these groups and the scr iptures . Each also has a page on the basic teachings of the church. We are quite enthusiast ic about them and they do f i l l a gap whichwe have long real ized has been in our t rac ts . In time we hope to p rep are a companiont r ac t on Mohammedianism, which is of course, a problem here as well.

    One day this month, we printed some 10,000 io^ressions simply to bring our t rac tstock back up to par. We never keep more than 500 of any one t i t l e on hand ei ther .Even with some of th e North African countries closing thei r doors to mail originat ingin South Africa , we s t i l l have a busy schedule. The Tract of the Month club increasedby about ten persons this month. Only the Gospel Light has los t ground and tha t isbecause one o r tw o sm a ll er c o u nt ri es have re fu s ed to a llow it in t h e i r ma i l s . Inother areas, including Ghana and Niger ia , the demandis s t i l l increasing.

    Because of my new responsibi l i t ies in reguard to th e Nat ive churches, we havefound i t necessary to drop, for the time being, our evening classes at the church.Brother Roland Joseph is get t ing married a t the moment in any case and i s happy forthe extra time Jus t now. We hope to resume study at the end of th e year with a newt e rm .

    These respons ib i l i t ies meant tha t we had to make the t r ip to Port Shepstone oneweek, th is month to bring the records of the mission work back to Kimberley. We alsobrought the blanks for the Life o f C hris t V is ua liz ed in Zulu which I must s t i l l preparefor pr in t ing . The weight of these materials so slowed us in the mountains tha t i t tookus a fu l l 16 hours to drive the 600 mile t r ip back! We were really exhausted fo r s ev era ldays. In any case, I have been a t work on the f i l e s and records and have th ings, wehope, fa i r ly well in hand. Our biggest problem is the necessi ty of the bui lding program among the Native churches and th e s ho rt ag e of funds for i t .Yours in H is Se rv i c e

    Hi very frightening experience earlier this monthbegan while Phyllis was at the loca ti on fo r women'smeeting. Judy and Kathy decided that they would take a l i t t l elunch and go out fo r a picnic alone. They generally go to a panear here and come back in plenty of time, bu t this lime they

    Robe r t s , Mills decided to go far ther and crossed the fence line into the openPhyllis J, Mills vield beyond. I gather that they paid no attention to where thewere going until Judy looked at her watch and found that i t waSPONSORED BY: time to come home.By this time,they could see no houses, and ocourse as the vield looks th e same eve rywher e, th ey had no idea

    Webber Stree t which way to go . They must have wandered even deeper before darChurch of Chr i s t Of course, both Judy 's fa ther and I were searching for them sooUrbana, Illinois after sun-set, but as the darkness comes very rapidly it wassoon dark and we had found no gi r l s . Mr Reign phoned the pol iceFORWARDING AGENT; to help and we both called at a number of farms along the road

    th is s ide of the c i ty . Mrs Reign was nearly hys te r ica l and evenMabel S, Mills Phyllis was badly f righ tened . Fortunate ly Mr Reign stopped atBox 134 a farm where they had been seen and th e farmer and h is familyWest Salem, Illinois started a search. The older daughter went out on a horse and62476 the son went, with a nat ive worker, and a dog, on foot . Wewere more worried about the cold than anything as both g i r l s had only sweaters s inceth e a ft er no on had been warm, but i t turned very cold a f t e r the sun se t . We visual izedthem perishing of exposure as many people have done in the vield. We knew, too, thatthey would be t e r r i f i ed of wild animals^ though poss ibly not in too much danger so c loto town. Fortunately, as soon as i t was dark, the drive- in- theatre , near here switchedon the i r l ights and especial ly the l ights a t th e top of the screen. These can be seenfor many miles in this f l a t country. I could see them from fou rteen m iles out on theDouglas road where we turned back that night . . The gir ls could no t se e them at f i r s tbut they climbed a koppie and spotted them, then star ted in that di rec t ion , knowingt he i r way from th e theat re if they could reach it . I t was about the same time that theboy with the dog found them and he took them to the i r house which was much nearer. Thein turn , phoned the Reign home and we went for them a t the farm. They were home, safeand sound by 8:00 but real ly frightened. I am confident they won't do that again!

    This month, we have given considerable at tent ion to the building needs of th eBantu churches. I have urged them to s tar t savings accounds, even i f they jIo no t expecto bui ld r igh t away, an d have helped them to organize th i s fund with special p r in tedenvelopes for the members, e tc . Several of them have already s ta r ted . Now we are lookininto a cheaper and more sui table method of errec t ion . I ha\*' already found a source ofs tee l window frames where we can get a 2^% discount and th* prices are cheaper alreadythan we have been paying. I find tooj tha t we have not b*Mi using the most economicalsizes and shapes. We can get more glass a t a cheaper pr ice by changing to a differc^ntframe!l am also looking into pre-fabr icated roofing ass^mblies which will cer tainly bemore durable and a t t rac t ive than th e p re se nt arrangement. Price remains to be seen.

    Unfortunately our pr int ing is fa r behind schedule this month. Paper ordereda t the f i r s t of the month has been over a month in arr iv ing! I have s

    September, 1964Dear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d s ,

    This has been a busy month, but we can see definite progressbeing made in the Lord's work, especially among our Bantu brothers. At the end of the month (September), the archi tect f ina llyproduced the plans for the Kimberley location church. I will bepresenting these to the congregation shortly and then to the cityfor t h e i r approval.In the realm of buildings in general, we have prepared thebul le t in on the reverse side of t h i s l e t t e r to act as a guide tothe local churches in t h e i r method of obtaining a building. Theidea of the mission providing the roof and the local church thewalls is a very old plan which they have always preferred. This

    is really only an orderly presentation of a plan already , intheory,in action, making use of the rotating Evangelistic andBuilding Fund. I t is our prayer that American churches will wantFORWARDING AGENT:jigip with this program, especially in the provision of doorsand windows which wil l cost abou t $75 . for t he buil di ng shown.The roof structure, as i t is shown, will cost about $3^. TheEvangelistic and Building Fund would be greatly helped i f yourchurch would like to under^ite one of these projects for abuilding.-PJ-^ase mark any contributions-for this purpose so thatwe may be c e r t a i n .

    We have just returned from a missionary meeting at Port Shepstone where we discussedthe atmve plan for presentation to the Bantu churches and where we also discussed at somlength other vital matters of the churches. One matter of deep concern is the need forstewardship teaching and a definite plan for presentation to them. We decided to make thenatter a subject for prayer and to strive to bring to South Africa a new mission familywho will be relatively free of family ties and can travel extensively among the Bantuchurches to teach them. It is apparent to us that some one must go directly to the churcand to teach them there. Since they are widely scattered, this family will probably haveto live in a house trailer and plan to be traveling most of the time. Most of us haveschool age children and can not arrange such travel as needed. Fortunately trailer faci l i t ies are available in all parts of the country and roads have improved to the placethat they offer no handicap. If you know of a family would would like this sort of work,please let us know as soon as poss ible and pray for them that the Lord may guide them.Inthe meantime we shall teach as best as possible through our printed materials, le t ters ,a n d at t h e S c h o o l .The printing press has been active, once we received our printing paper supplies, aswell. We printed 36,550 impressions during September, including the GOSPEL LIGHT, revivaannouncements for Capetown, tracts for the Mashoko Mission, materials for brother Hamiltoof Johannesburg,, and several thousand t racts fo r our own distribution. Two new tractsprinted this month were for the "What does the Bible Say?" series on Adventism and IslamThere was also a run on our lesson books this month in a l l languages. Forty came in fromvarious areas for grading, which is more than usual. A large number of them came from al arge p ri son where the inmates have been studying the B ible in spare time .

    Please keep us constantly in your prayers as we strive to continue in His work.Youxs^in , C h r i s t J e s i

    October, 1964Dear Chr i s t i an Fr iends;

    With the r is ing cost of everything else , we were delightedth is monthwhen we were able to establish a local supply ofprinting paper which is no t only of better quality, but whichMISSIONARIES* considerably cheaper than we had been getting and isavailable locally when we need i t . A fr iend who operates a local

    Robert S. Mills printing firm will keep us supplied.Phyllis J, Mills The building plans have now been filed for the churchbuilding on the location here and we hope shortly to hear tha tSPONSORED BY: they have been approved and we can start construction at anyt ime. I have already asked the men o f the locat ion church toWebber Street start breaking down th e old school bui ld ing s ince we want to useChurch of Christ those bricks in the new building. I don't have to go down, how-Urbana, Illinois ever, to be almost c er ta in th at they have done nothing. Theyalso owe me for the building fees which I had to pay before IFORWARDING AGENT: could leave the plans for approval.

    Mabel S Mills announced the immediate sale of city ownedBox 134* construction of coloured homes. Since it is directlyWest Salem Illinois opposite Sq. Hill Park, where most of our coloured members live,* I wrote an^made an application for a church site in the township.They have acknowledged the l e t t e r , but we have not yet heard i fthey will approve a s i te for us. The Lord leading in the_provision o f a s i t e the re , we sha l l ask the Warren St r ee t cong rega ti on to borrow money on

    the i r building to build on i t . I hate to do this since the Warren Stree t property wil lbe paid for by tha t time and most of tha t congregation wil l move to the new building andleave a very few to repay the debt on the original property, but I see no other way. Wewil l probably plan to build a very small hall such as the one pictured on th e re ve rseo f t h i s letter.

    We have been working long hours this week in an attempt to get not only this monthsprinting out, but also to make a start on November's work since I will be away fromKimberley one whole week during the middle of the month. Brother Hamilton has arrangeda tent meeting for Noordgesig Coloured township in Johannesburg and I am to go up topreach for th e mee ting.

    One big job of this month has been the typesetting for the Zulu edition of theLife of Chr ist Visual ized. I have nearly a l l o f th is done now, but wil l have to dosome over af ter proofreading no doubt. In antic ipat ion of burning the p r in ti ng p la te sfor these and because our old exposure l ight was already l os ing s tr eng th in any case,we have bu i l t a cabinet and ins ta l l ed a bank of f lourescent l igh t s to burn our p la t e s .I t is far more eff ic ien t and gives a complete coverage for even large areas.

Certa inly Ihave thought of these things time andagain, yet have always returned to thes a m e c on cl u si o n . T h e re i s no o t h e rway, at least in principle, than theway already chosen a revolvingfund, heavily subsidized, must be used.WHY NOT MEET IN HOMES?. There a r e tw o r e a s o n s t h i s i s notan. acceptable solution to the problemof housiiig the church. The first is that

    -md^re anj lifore of th e Bantii of SouthAfrica are being housed in governmenthousing devielopments. Because of thegreat need for these houses, they ar eof bare>minimum s tandards . Their formerself-made homes were often smal lerand less suitable as places of worship.Most of these new homes ar e crowdedwith furniture. The l iving room, smallto begin with, is in most cases thedining room, sometimes the kitchenan d a l s o doubles a s a bedroom a tnight. From a practical viewpoint, itis not sui table for a place of worship.The second reason for not meetingin a home permanently is that it isillegal to use a home as a church. Because they are too small, are toocrowdedi and are not public places,they are illegal as churches. A churchis expected to be open for the attendance of the general public and mustnaturally comply with basic health requirements.WHY CAN NOT INDIVIDUALCHURCHKS RAISE THEIR OWNFUNDS AS IN AMERICA?American c h u r c h e s often r a i s e

    thousands of dollars, even hundredsofthousands, for the purpose of erectingbeautiful structures of many rooms andwith elaborate equipment. Why can notthe B antu do t h i s in South Africa?

    The Bantu peop le of South Africahave always, and probably always will,live only from day to day, a sort of''hand-to-mouth" existence. They do 'not plan in advance. If they shouldperchance have more money than theyneedi for one day, they seldom think tosave some for another t ime, when theymay be^short . It is probably more unusual tha t they should ever have anything to lay aside, since the wagescale is quite low. The wages areusually gone long before pay day rollsaround again.More and more frequently newchurch sites are forced upon the churchon short not ice, as when th e locationis moved ill a slum clearance project,or a road i s built, or a new area isannounced. They have little time toprepare, even if they were so inclined.One application on my desk has 30days in which to apply if we wish as i t e in an area where a smal l churchgroup meets now. When the site isgranted , there wil l be a clause in thel e a s e t h a t cons truct ion must s t a r t ins ix. months or the l e a s e will be cancelled. If we do not comply this closesthe door, as another site cannot beapplied for in the area.WHY CAN THEY NOT BORROWFROM A BUILDING SOCIETY?The Bantu chu rch never owns th eland on which the building is placed.The land is always a part of the build

    ing project and it is leased by the year.Building societies do not lend moneyfor buildings to be placed on leasedland in Bantu locations. In any disturbance it is usually the public buildingsof the locations which are damagedfirst. The building societies are inbusiness to make money. It is veryd i f f i c u l t fo r a B an t u t o o bt a i n a l oanof any sort; especially would this betrue o f a church b e c a u s e of i t s l a c kof a guaranteed income.WHY NOT BUILD A C H E A P E R

    T Y P E O F FRAME BU ILDING ?

    In South Africa, frame buildingwould not be cheaper; and they woulnot be approved for construction in thdevelopments. We would not be ablto obtain a permit to construc t a framhome in nine ou t of te n of th e municpalities of South Africa. A basic requirement of the law is that they be oburned brick or cement block, withmetal or a s b e s t o s roof.NOW WE HAVE A QUESTION TOO.

    B eca use o f th e c ircumstan ces iwhich we work , the number of sites tbe developed simultaneously, and witthe shortage of time, we must worthrough a revolving fund. The repayment is also certain to be slow, yethere is no other way. Houses of woship must be built.

    The six applications for sites ansite approvals on my desk will havto be developed soon at an estimateminimiun figure of |1,500 each. Thresult will be yery plain buildings ocement block or b rick containing onroom and possibly having a baptisterand tiny dressing rooms. The windowframes will be of steel. These bui ldings wil l last for years with little ono upkeep; they will fill the bare needof the church using them, having noeven a ceiling to turn away the scorching summer heat. They will have nelectricity, though it is available, anprobably will have no water-bornsewage unless the municipal ity requires it . They will, though, provida place of worship for about 600 Christ i a n s .

    What part will you take in thiproject, by far the most expensive parof the work? Contact any forwardinagent with a check clearly marke"Church Building Fund." Don't delayThese sites must be developed if thcause of Christ is to go forward iSouth Afr ic a. A c t now!

    1 am sure that you will be anxious to know th e resul t ofour week long tent revival at Johannesburg We felt that theLord truly gave His blessings on the meeting which began onthe firs t night with an overflow crowd and continued everynight with a f ill ed tent. We truly praise God that four havegiven their hearts to the Lord andhave already been baptised.Several others also came forward and some of these may alsobe immersed short ly. We feel that those who came in obedience,plus the Christians already living in the area will make agood start toward a church in this township, the Lord willingand guiding. They are several miles from the church downtown.Johannesburg is truly a field "white unto the harvest" but Ohthe workmen are so few! Brother Hamilton and I again discussedat some length the need for proper training facili t ies for themin is try for such places as this. We are, at the present time,so distant from one another tha t i t is hard to be able to dovery much in this area ,

    M a b e l S. Mi l l sB ox 134West Salem, Ill inois62476 -- . . .shall conduct a tent ;neeting in the Coloured area toward th e end of January. Decemberand early January have turned out to be just too filled to work in a full week.

    You will recall that we took th e varityper machine to Johannesburg to be workedon. Unfortunately i t was not finished when I had to return so we left i t there to becompleted, I hope to be able to bring it now when we go up at the end of December tobe on hand to welcome the LeMay family and say "so-long" to the Hamiltons. I t is verydoubtful that we would have had an opportunity to use i t before that time in any case.We have the type set for the Zulu, "Life of Christ Visualized" book and will short lystart the making of the negatives for the plate preparation. This will be a lengthyjob.

    Please note that our l i t t le "Bell-ringer" has returned. This is to show th eprogress in our paying off the debt on the A.B. Dick printing machine. We are gaining,but we are very anxious to get this debt paid so that we can use all funds in activeevangelism. Will you not help us to erase this drain on our budget for the Lord inthe new year? Our goal is that we might pay i t completely off by February, the Lordb less ing .Last month we tried an experimental teaching method for the Native churches andtheir Sunday Schools in particular. I printed a stewardship lesson on large flash-cards. This eliminates the need for expensive extra equipment such as flannelgraphrequires and also for proper layout also required by flannelgraph. (They sometimesget figures upside down, etc. on that.) Each lesson is printed in six languages onthe back of the cards with the picture on the audience side. I have sent out abouta ftalf dozen test sets to get their reaction. Those which have returned letters havehad very good comments, so we are now planning other lessons and stories. (We coulduse an antist now!) Our ultimate goal will be 52 lessons so that leaves but 51 to plan!" May the Lord truly bless you all as we look forward to the new year in Hisservice.     31st. December, 1964Dear Chr i s t i an Fr i ends ;

    We have jus t returned from Johannesburg where we went tomeet the LeMay family on their arr ival from America, to pay onelas t vi s i t to the Hamiltons, who are now in America, and also tocollect the Varityper which is now ready for use. I t has beenoverhauled, and should be ready for general work now. We hope tomake the greatest use of i t in setting up tracts and the books.The Gospel Light will probably continue to be mainly set up onthe typewriter with captions by Varityper.

    While we were in Johannesburg , 1 preached for a ful l houseat the Johannesburg church on Christmas morning. The congregationalso had a se r ie s o f soc ia l events to welcome the new minis te rand say fare-well to the Hamiltons. Unfortunately, I became veryi l l with "Gastr ic Enter i t i s " on Saturday morning and spent a l lday Saturday and Sunday in bed. We had gotten up, intending toORWARDING AGENT: re-tum to Kimberley on Saturday. I responded well to the Dr*fdouble injection, however, and with the medicines was able toabel S. Mills return home on Monday. There has been an epidemic of this illnei*Box 134 this year and many babies have died.

    Wes t S ale m . I l l in ois62476 Plans are being l a id by the Kimberley church that we-_&hall 1a tent meeting near Square Hill Park area, th e last week of January. We hope that th e pla nscome about without hi tch s ince th i s i s the f i r s t t ime t ha t I have arranged for a t en tmeeting and i t is a ll new to us. Brother Roland Joseph plans to lead in t he preaching ,and the LeMays hope to be here for a few days at the end of th e meeting since they donot feel that they can be away from Johannesburg for the ent i re week.

    The Life Of Christ Visualized books were printed last month and now we are assemblingthem and stapling and trimming th e completed books. We probably would have gotten them alldone had not th e l int from the paper given me a very severe case of "hay fever". I had tocompletely s top for several days. We now have 750 done and hope to have more very soon.The gir ls are fo ld in g them for me at the present time sin ce the pages are too large forthe e lec t r ic folding machine. I am anxious to get a thousand done th i s week at l eas t ,especially so since they take up at least thir ty square feet of dining room floor unt i lthey are f in ishedl This has been a d i f f i cu l t job since the measurements of the pages areactually too large for a l l our equipment. This means much has to be done by hand.

    The Municipali ty has f ina l ly returned the approved plans for the location churchbui lding and as soon as the bu il de r* s ho li day i s over , we must find a bui lder and s t a r tconstruction on that building. I t seems that the Germiston Municipality i s will ing tocontract for the building of the Germiston building so we hope tha t will be started soonas well . Brother LeMay will discuss deta i l s with them over that building as Germiston ismore than 300 miles from Kimberley and he l ives near-by.

    I t is but a few days now until the preaching ral ly at Capetown. This is for the "DownTown" churches. We hope to have th e ral ly at Kimberley next year. We have invited th eLeMays and the Freemans of Rhodesia to stop over here for the night on th eir tr ip downand they have both r e tu rned th e f avor with an i nv i t a t i on t ha t I r ide with one o f themfrom here. I think I shal l since we need the Bus here for church services while I am away.Phyllis and th e children are not p lann ing to attend since i t is a very long hard t r ip ,
