Enkele mannen wilden een wedstrijd organiseren met de Tour de France als voorbeeld. De eerste editie van de Jeugdtour Assen telde 40 deel- nemers. Vijftig jaar later is de European Junior Cycling Tour volwassen geworden. Het is nu het grootste jeugdwielerevenement van de wereld met elk jaar ruim 700 deelne- mers uit alle windstreken. Wereldkampioenen als Mark Cavendish en Marianne Vos reden in Assen en vele andere profrenners en -rensters wonnen hun eerste koersen op de Drentse wegen. De 50e editie is een feestje waard. Daarom pakken we groots uit met leuke evene- menten. Echter, het wielrennen blijft het allerbelangrijkste van de Jeugdtour. Proloog, klassieker, criterium, omloop en tijdrit zijn allemaal weer in het programma opgeno- men. Na een week van vreugde maar ook van teleurstellingen staan er dan zaterdag weer elf toekomstige wielerkampioenen te stralen in de gele Energiewachttrui Mis deze 50e jubileumeditie niet! Het belooft een week te worden om nooit te vergeten. It all started back in 1964. A group of men wanted to organize a race modelled on the Tour de France. The first edition of the Jeugdtour Assen had 40 participants. Fifty years on the European Junior Cycling Tour Assen has grown up. It’s the biggest youth cycling event in the world with over 700 participants coming from all parts of the world every year. World champions like Mark Cavendish and Marianne Vos rode in Assen and many other pro cy- clists won their first race on Drenthe soil. The 50th edition is worth a celebration. That’s why we organize all sorts of great events. However, the cycling remains the most important feature of the Jeugdtour. A prologue, cobbled classic, criterium, omloop and time trial are all part of the programme again. After a week of joy and also of disappointment eleven future champions will be celebrated on the big podium. They will shine in their yellow Energiewacht jerseys. Don’t miss this 50th edition!
