Its easy to think of computers as machinery..like buttons, screens andparts that work together.

The problem withcomputers is that most of us don’t speak thatlanguage.

They are understoodonly by the computerscalled binary digits. (0’sand 1’s).

We need a translator or something that canunderstand our needs and put the computer towork for us. The translator is called software, itmakes the computer respond to us.

By adding software the computers become

more alive by helping us do all the activities weneed.

There are 2 basic kinds of operating systemand software programs.




The operating systems perform basicoperations of a computer like saving files, usingmouse and fixing problems. The operatingsystems do the same things with all thecomputers such Windows, Mac and Linux.

Computer Software is a collection of computer programs or instructions that performa particular operation on the computer system.

They are instructions or programs that enablea computer to perform a function.

Computer software are mostly created by

computer programmers using a programminglanguage.




The programmers write commands in theprogramming language that are similar to what

someone might use in everyday speech. Thesecommands are called source code.

Another computer program called a compileris then used on the source code, fortransforming the commands into a languagethat the computer can understand. The result is

an executable computer program, which isanother name for software.

System software are programs that allow thehardware to run properly. System software helpsto run the computer hardware and computersystem.

DEVICE DRIVER

A device driver is a file that letsthe computer know theconfiguration and specificationsof a certain hardware device.

Some examples of devices thatneed drivers are hard drives,DVD drives, and PCI cards.




An Operating systemis an interfacebetween hardwareand software in acomputer system.

The OS is responsible

for the managementand coordination of activities and thesharing of the limitedresources of the

An application software is aprogram that helps us performspecific operation in a userfriendly way.

They interact with ourmachine and we use them toget things done. If you have ever used Word,Excel or PowerPoint fromMicrosoft, then you know whatan application software is.




Web browsers are alsoapplication software that

we use on a regular basis. The most popular ones areInternet Explorer andMozilla Firefox. Another

well known applicationsoftware is the anti-virus.

Multiple applicationsare bundled together as a

package and aresometimes referred to asan application suite.




Programming softwareprovides tools to assist aprogrammer in writingcomputer programs and

software using differentprogramming languages in amore convenient way.

Computer programs canbe compiler, debuggers,interpreters and text editors.
