Confront results of theoretical studies on French nominalizations in -age and -ment based on dictionaries to real data.

Examine noun pairs in -age and -ment derived from the same verb, where one member is attested in French contemporary dictionaries, and the other one only present on the Internet .

Presupposition:

-age and -ment are phonological manifestations of different

morphosyntactic property-sets. If there are two different

exponents, the Lexeme Formation Rules they belong to must

be different => “Fixed meaning model” (Fradin, 2016).

Transitive verbs: suffixation in -age.

Intransitive, reflexive or passivized verbs: suffixation in -ment.

How is pattern competition between Xage and Xmentmotivated?

Is there a clear-cut distribution of roles?

What drives speakers in the choice of Xment or Xage?

Nonce formations are coined within the Xage pattern, or the Xmentpattern.

Is there really something specific to the Xage and Xmentpatterns?


Xment and Xage do not fit the Aronoff’s criteria of "pattern competition":

Constraints are not in complementary distribution

Pattern instantiations are not mutually exclusive

No niches

Rather: compatible suffixation models, both available withthe same verb base, and striving toward the same derivationaleffect


Both Xage Xment models are better accounted for from a paradigmatic perspective

Xsuf1 <--> Xsuf2 unoriented complementarity relation with"niche sharing"

Bi-exponent pattern: covering the set of relevant text types, included the general

language

accounting for alternating event/result aspectual values, and/or agent/patient argument

used to create (playful) nonce-formations


In short, Xage/Xment is in French a derivational paradigmensuring that nominalizations can access the largestavailable panel in terms of aspect, argument structure, language register and context.


Theoretical results do not resist to real data: No complementarity between the two suffixations, but, at the

very best, trends that suffer frequent and large overlaps. « Fixed semantic model » contradicted by the analysis of the

data reported here: suffixations in -age and -ment both act as events and results.
