Spring Room Decor By: Lexi Rubio

What’s up everyone, I am here to enlighten you on some awesome decor ideas for the new Spring season! So, let’s get right into it. I got my information from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8-7qmKgPGo

Art Clips

For this first one, you are just going to get these things called bulldog clips from the

office supply section of stores like Target, Walmart, or Office Depot. You can spray

paint these with a variety of different colors. Let them dry for about a half hour. Then,

you can use some damage free command strips. First, put the first sticky side on the

back of the clip. Then the other sticky side on the wall, and then there’s Velcro to

connect them together. And these are so cool because when you remove them, there is

no marks on the wall. Then, you can just put some inspirational cards on them and

there you go!

Polaroid Shadow Box

This next one is one of my personal favorites because it involves Polaroids. With some duct tape, just make a little duct tape roll to put across the width of each one. It’s awesome because the duct tape is the same width as the Polaroid, so you don’t have to trim at all. Next, measure the size of your shadow box and they have a bunch of different sizes to choose from. She started placing them from the sides so they can be more even, but you can do it however you want. So, after you’ve laid them out in your box, you can go ahead and add any stickers or scrapbook elements (as she did in the video) to make it cuter or just look how you want it.

Have you ever wondered: “Do teachers and students enjoy the same things?” Well, I

have. So, I decided to survey some of them and write an article about it. In the

charts below, you will see the teachers and students I interviewed, the question I

asked them, and how they responded.

(WARNING: SOME PEOPLE MAY BE REPEATED)

The next question is:

Komarek School: The Retiring Teachers

By: Darren Par

As one of the graduating students this year, I’ve always wanted to leave my own history behind with Komarek. I’ve been here ever since preschool, and ever since then I’ve been enjoying Komarek more than ever. However, I feel like eighth graders shouldn’t be the only ones leaving one last message. I’d like to honor the retiring staff of Komarek School this year. I want to give them the spotlight and the chance to leave one last message for all the students and staff of Komarek School. So, with the spotlight on Ms. Mizia, Mrs. Corlett, and Mrs. Mullen, I’m here to share one last message from them all. During press time, Mr. Norris had notified me he was undecided. So, in case you’re wondering where Mr. Norris is on this article, he remains undecided on his retirement status. Thank you, and now presenting Ms. Mizia, Mrs. Corlett, and Mrs. Mullen!

Q1: What inspired you to choose your current profession? Ms. Mizia: “Math was always my favorite subject and always my best subject. I wanted to be able to help people who had trouble with math.” Mrs. Corlett:

“It was a long time ago...I really believed that being able to take care of yourself and take care of others will lead to a happier life. Being self-efficient is important.” Mrs. Mullen: “Well, I always wanted to be a teacher. I always wanted to help students with special needs and I always had great teachers and great role models. And I love kids. I love students and being in the school environment.”

Q2: What was your most memorable year here at Komarek? Ms. Mizia:

“It would have to be my very first year because before I came here, I taught at a school that was 7th and 8th grade only with over 600 students. I was amazed at how a small school could have Kindergarten through 8th grade, but still offer everything a big school could offer.” Mrs. Corlett:

“The year that the board approved having FCCLA. I was able to enjoy my time with those students, with things such as the Chili Cook Off.” Mrs. Mullen: “Hm, I have so many. I loved the time I spent as a school counselor. To be able to help students with social or emotional needs. But, every year here has been an exciting journey.”

Q3: Describe one of the biggest challenges you had to face. Ms. Mizia:

“My biggest challenge was trying to finish everything we have to finish in math in one school year. That was my biggest challenge, trying to fit everything in before school was out.” Mrs. Corlett: “Fitting 23 students in my classrooms. 23 8th graders in my classroom, just trying to be able to fit everyone so I can teach them everything I want them to learn.” Mrs. Mullen: “Ugh, the paperwork! Lots and lots of paperwork. Teachers have, besides grading, lesson plans. As the special education coordinator, I have reports, and reports, and reports. It’s not hard, it’s just tedious and very

SPECIAL: Was math a struggle for you in the past? What is the best way that students can tackle math? Ms. Mizia:

“Fortunately, math was never a struggle for me, my dad was good at math. But, for students who struggle, do one step at a time, work carefully, and find someone who can help you. It can be anyone, a friend, teacher, anybody. Just find someone who can help you. There’s always someone out there who can help you.” SPECIAL: What is your most favorite recipe to teach? Why? Mrs. Corlett: “Apple pie. It’s my favorite recipe to teach because they’re learning the skills of peeling, slicing, how to use pastry crust, crimp, and mostly because students are very proud of their pie and how delicious it is.” SPECIAL: Describe a difficult situation a student was in. How did you handle it and help them? Mrs. Mullen: “Whenever a student is so very sad, that they feel there’s no hope or change in their life, I talk with them. I talk with them to see how valuable they are. I talk with their parents to help guide them. I make sure the student has support here, and those have probably been my most difficult challenges.”

Q5: What plans do you have for the future?

Ms. Mizia: “I still plan on continuing on teaching at the College of DuPage and then spend time with friends

that I haven’t seen in a while.” Mrs. Corlett: “I hope to say in education on a part-time basis. My daughter is having a baby in June, so that’ll keep me busy. She lives in the area and teaches at Brook Park. Mrs. Mullen: “Well, I hope to continue working in some form in the educational field. I might teach a class or two at the college level. I love to read, go to movies, but mostly I like to spend time with my four children, my daughter-in-law, my husband, and other extended family members. Hopefully we get a little travel in! It depends on when my husband retires.”

Q6: What is one last piece of advice you’d like to leave for the students of Komarek? Ms. Mizia:

“Always do your best at everything, and you will be successful, and always be kind to everyone you can be kind to.” Mrs. Corlett: “Enjoy your time here, and take advantage of all the opportunities that they have here. Unique opportunities, we’re very unique here. That’s what makes Komarek great.” Mrs. Mullen: “Everyone has talents. Everyone can succeed. But, I think the most important thing about being a successful human being, is to be the nice kid. Be nice to others, support others.

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. These three teachers from Komarek are some of the greatest teachers we’ve had here. We’ve truly adored them from since they first came here to now, by all staff and students of the past and present. We will miss and treasure these retired teachers of Komarek School, and they will always be remembered.

3 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions:

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating thoroughly after each one is added.

Sift dry ingredients together three times and add alternately (beginning and ending with dry ingredients

in 3 parts) with buttermilk and vanilla to creamed mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Fold

butter and dusted with flour. Bake in a preheated oven at 325 degrees for one hour. Remove from oven and

This castiron lamb mold, shown here, is from the Czech Republic (formerly known as Czechoslovakia). When my great-great grandmother was 16 years old, she brought this over to the United States when she left her home in Czechoslovakia. This cast

iron mold has been passed down to each generation and is now my mom’s. Every year, as a tradition, we use this cast iron mold to make our Easter Lamb cake for our family celebration.

SUPER MARIO 64

By: C.J. Rosa

Super Mario 64 was made in 1996. It is a video game for the Nintendo 64, and

the first in the Super Mario series. As Mario, the player explores Princess Peach's castle

and must rescue her from Bowser. Super Mario 64 is based on open-world playability,

degrees of freedom through all three axes in space, and relatively large areas which are

composed primarily of true 3D polygons as opposed to only 2D characters. It places an

importance on exploration within vast worlds that require the player to complete

missions, in addition to the occasional straight obstacle courses as in traditional platform

games. While doing so, it still preserves many gameplay elements and characters of

earlier Mario games, and the same visual style. Super Mario 64 is acclaimed as one of the

greatest video games of all time and was the first game to receive a perfect score from

Edge magazine.

Barcelona’s Best! Annabella Moreno

Over Spring Break, my family decided to take a trip overseas. So, my parents said that they wanted to take a trip to Barcelona, a city is Spain’s Catalonia region. I feel that the city was beautiful, and there was so much beautiful artwork in building and drawing form. My father particularly liked the seafood there, as he is a fan of it. However, I’m not here to discuss all of our experiences. Here are the places that we visited and thought were interesting!

La Sagrada Familia: La Sagrada Familia, which translates to The Holy Family, is a is a large unfinished Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí is very famous in Barcelona, and this is his greatest work. He died before it was completed, as it is expected to be finished in 2026, so about seven years. I think that the architecture was so symbolic and everything was so planned out and beautiful. La Pedrera: Also known as Casa Milà, this building was also designed by Antoni Gaudí, for Pere Milà and his wife, Roser. The building was very controversial because of its unique design. Today, people can visit the building and see the beautiful and unique design. Park Güell: This park isn’t an amusement park, nor is it nature. This is a place that has unique buildings designed by (you guessed it) Antoni Gaudí. It also has gardens and colorful statues adorning the area. This park is located on Carmel Hill, which is part of a mountain range in Barcelona. Although you have to walk uphill for a while, the place is worth it! Now, these weren’t all the places I visited in Barcelona, but these locations were the most memorable for me.

Myers-Briggs - The Guardians and The Artisans By: Ella Westel

In my previous article, I have talked about “The Rationals”, which were four types that each had the “N” and “T” traits in common with each other. For my final article, I will be doing a “two-fer”; “The Guardians” and “The Artisans”, which have the “SJ” and “SP” traits respectively.

ESFJ - “The Consul”

If you are an ESFJ, you generally:

• Enjoy positively influencing others • Try to create a peaceful environment • Prefer working with others to accurately complete

tasks • Strongly support your loved ones, whether it be

friends or family • Want to gossip, but you try to refrain from being

mean/harsh • Lead with a moral compass based on what you are

familiar with, but you forget that some people have different views than you

• Prefer to be in positions that make an impact • Enjoy listening to your friends’ stories, and usually

remember random details about your friends, too • Like to organize plans, and feel offended if someone

doesn’t go with them

ESTJ - “The Executive”

If you are an ESTJ, you generally: • Pick up on small details quicker than others • Have a very logical mind and way of dealing with situations • Are very practical, decisive, and organized • Always want to complete tasks in the most efficient way

possible • Great advice/guidance and typically take the lead during

difficult tasks, which is what makes you come off as a good leader

• Have a strong distaste for cheating and laziness, preferring to work hard and push through the challenges

• Have very strong beliefs and principles, and you never separate yourself from them

• Prefer to work with groups, but if someone in the group doesn’t meet your expectations, you can get very agitated with them

• Are known to be very inflexible

3 Things you Didn’t Know About NetRef

By: Jessica Bellm

NetRef, the program our school recently took up might be

great for teachers, but not for students. NetRef allows teachers

to see their students search history and what they are currently

looking at on their computers.

1.Securly and NetRef Work Together

Since we began using NetRef, many students were wondering

why we still had Securly. Based on my research, NetRef and

Securly go hand in hand. NetRef catches students on sites they

shouldn’t be on, and Securly blocks those sites.

2. NetRef isn’t the Only One

As it turns out, NetRef is one of the many

“classroom management” programs on the

market. Other programs such as Net Support,

Sentry PC, Go Guardian, and Classroom Spy do

similar things to NetRef, sometimes with even

more features.

3. It Could Be Worse

Getting caught for being off task may seem bad,

but other “classroom management” programs

are able to do more than just catch students in

the act and limit their access. Some programs

allow teachers to take control of student

computers and limit the amount of daily usage

per student, which would make time

management difficult.

Mr. Beast By: Nick Onesti

Mr. Beast one of the best Youtubers! He started off small making gaming videos

but moved to make better videos with the help of his roommate Chris, who still makes

videos with him today. He was gaining followers, just not fast, until he made an old

series called, “Worst Intros” with his icon Giant Asian Sticker. This is what really got

him in the main steam with millions of views. Since he got a sponsorship from Quidd, he

gave a homeless person 10k. He kept doing more stuff with Quidd and finally had

enough money to start a company, so he did. That allowed him to give away more money.

Of course, he hired workers. Some that we see often are Chris (his old roommate),

Garret, Chandler/ Chandler’s dad, Ethan, Jake (The Viking), and sometimes Tyler.

Once he got these people on his team, he made viral video after viral video. In

one year, he had 8 million subscribers! His videos are entertaining and original. He

makes videos twice a week and they are always amazing. Some of his videos are of him

spending one day in jail, him going back to first grade, having Youtubers have battle

royal, spending 24 hours in the desert, and seeing what can stop a bullet. At least 57

million people have seen this man at work. This is a great channel and I highly

recommend you subscribe but not just to Mr. Beast but to also Pewdiepie. He needs

subscribers, so he can beat T-Series.
