The following projects share a common theme - to breathe new life into forgotten areas of East London, and bring back the poetry, and significance of a once thriving area.

My name is Kia Scott. I am an interior architect, a recent graduate of London Metropolitan University in England. I am a creative thinker with a humanistic approach to design.

Residing in such dynamic cities as London and Chicago gives me a unique perspective and I use this to my advantage when coming up with design solutions.

It seems easier to forget and discard, and then turn to something new, rather than face the forgotten.

The Old Sailmakers site offers an interesting paradox: it is rich in its history and architecture. It is a building valued enough by the Tower Hamlets Council to be protected and Grade II listed. However it has been neglected, forgotten and left to rot. It is in desperate need of attention, repair and life.

“We live in a disposable society. It’s easier to throw things out than to fix them.”

-Neil LaBute

Program

This proposal is an opportunity to take the concept of recycling and apply it to a neglected building thus regenerating the surrounding community.

It is a multiple use building that offers a creative space for the community to recycle items, discover new uses and new sources of revenue also.

Site location: Commercial Road, Limehouse, East London

Give. Create. Buy. Sell

Give: Users drop off recycling. Create: The recyclables are sorted, reworked and re-imagined to make something new and useful - such as furniture or jewelry. Buy: In the on-site market, users can buy newly made recycled products. Sell: Users can also sell their own recycled creations in the market.

Inspired by the temporary nature of the tides of the River Thames, this device is used to make henna, an ink used for temporary tattoos. The device works in partnership with a tattoo studio called Baboo located on Commercial Road.

Leaving a mark and transience are primary themes the device brings to Commercial road.

When the device enters Baboo, the floor lowers, allowing the deck on the device to be at the first level. In this position customers are able to receive a henna tattoo while in the device.

This dual-use project takes the East London working class tradition of ‘Pie and Mash’, and combines it with a leisurely activity: theater. This creates a pie factory/cafe and an outdoor movie theater.

Patrons can enjoy traditional and contemporary pie creations while feasting their eyes on entertaining films.

This pop-up theater was designed for a youth Stratford Theater Company, to be placed around the Stratford Westfield Shopping Center.

This pop-up acts as a connecting point for visitors of the shiny new Westfield Shopping Center as well as residents of the not-so-shiny surrounding area of Stratford.
