Shop focus Cavallaro Napoli The two main walls of this rectangle-shaped boutique are lined nearly floor-to-ceiling with the brand’s signature product: well-tailored dress shirts for both men and women in a variety of colours, patterns and stripes, all featur- ing Cavallaro’s signature three-button neck and double button-down collar (a second collar in a contrasting colour peeks out from beneath the shirt’s main collar). This boutique, opened in autumn 2010, is the 11th iteration of the successful Dutch chain created nearly six years ago by Haarlem-based Italian designer, Giuseppe Cavallaro. The shirts are produced in the company’s own factory in Naples and imported to the Netherlands; prices range from €69.90-€99.90. Options are far from limited, with 30-35 models available on the floor at a given time; five new mod- els arrive weekly and each design only gets produced once. Tim Peterson The Amsterdamse Bos (Amster- dam Wood) is a large woodland park out beyond the Olympic Stadium with plenty of space for every conceivable outdoor activity, with great walking and running trails, a scenic lake for boating and canoeing, massive playing fields for ball games, petting farms where kids can get up close and personal with the animals and plenty of wide open space where you can just lie down and take in a little sun. There are also lots of nice indoor locations where you can enjoy bucolic views without hav- ing to brave the (inevitable) wind and rain: dine at the Grand Café Restaurant de Bosbaan right on the lake, eat typical Dutch pannenkoeken at the Boerderij Meerzicht and visit the Bosmu- seum, which chronicles the history and use of this great public wood- land (where you can also pick up detailed walking routes and maps). Summer in the Bos All summer long, the Museumtram travels along the eastern side of the Bos, from the Haarlem- mermeerstation to Bovenkerk. It’s a one-and-a-half-hour historic tram ride, with amazing views (see museumtramlijn.org) and children love it. Canoe and water-bike rent- ing in the Amsterdamse Bos Grote Speelweide 5 (645 7831/ kanoverhuur-adam.nl). In the heart of Amsterdam’s woods is a large artificial lake where you can hire pedaloes, canoes and even small electric boats. Prices start at just €6 per hour and there are all kinds of extra options, including children’s parties, survival trips by Canadian canoe, picnics, brunches and barbecues. Why go to a park in Amstelveen when Amsterdam has green spaces galore? The answer would be that this is no ordinary recreation area but a heempark, (a home or yard park) created with landscape architecture that’s dependent on native Dutch wild plants and flowers. Created by C.P. Broerse and named after pioneer- ing conservationist and botanist Jacobus P. Thijsse, the park was laid out in three stages, the earliest starting in 1941. While noisy, camera-equipped tourists rub shoulders with jogging locals and beer-drinking hipsters in the busy Vondel, the Thijssepark, spanning about 5.3 hectares and located on the edge of the Amsterdamse Bos, offers peace and quiet. There are no bikes rushing by but a string of narrow pebble footpaths lined with densely planted trees, un- trimmed fern bushes and the odd mushroom. The trails sometimes open up into openings with sweeping views of a rather large lake, while small wooden bridges help visitors across streams, allowing them to explore different parts of the park. Picnickers will have a hard time finding a spot to throw a blanket down, since the Thijssepark is all about walking and occasion- ally relaxing on the few benches scattered in the most panoramic stretches.
