Principal’s Report Dear Parents/Carers, Principal Start Date Update A separate letter will be coming home tonight outlining a change to the start date of our new Principal, Mr Travis Eddy. Prior to his appointment to Kennington Primary School, Travis had been granted Long Service Leave for Term 3, 2016. As a result, Travis will not commence at KPS until the beginning of Term 4, 2016. Speaking with Travis this week, he is excited about coming to Kennington and is eager to meet our families and become involved in our community. I will continue as Acting Principal for Term 3. Demolition of old F Block – Begins Monday 6

th June

I have been advised that the contractors will be on site this Monday 6

th June to begin the demolition process of F

Block. This means that as of Monday, we will be blocking access to the school via Edwards Road. Staff, students, families and community members are asked to access the school via Crook Street or St Aidans Road during this time. The school crossing on Edwards Road will not be supervised during the demolition period, so parents are asked to make alternate arrangements. It is anticipated to take 4-5 weeks to systematically demolish the building in sections. The demolition team will access the site from Edwards Road. Whilst the contractors will make every effort to fit around the school’s needs, it will likely have significant impact:

Traffic flow around the Edwards Road area may be restricted during the day. Parking along Edwards Road may also be restricted.

Access to the school via Edwards Road will be blocked. Please start planning for different drop off and pick up points if this affects your family. This will also apply pressure to the other collection and drop off points around the school. Families are asked to plan accordingly to accommodate this change of traffic flow and be patient.

Students who walk, ride or scoot to school will need to enter the school via St Aidans Road or Crook Street. If this is a new route, please ensure your child is familiar with it.

Pram/wheelchair access via Edwards Road will not be possible during this time. Families with prams and wheelchairs will need to access the school via either St Aidans Road or Crook Street.

Access to play space at the back of the school may be restricted during this time. The school will make a decision about this as the need arises.

Principal’s Report continued…….

Dust and noise are likely to have an impact during school times. The contractors will make every effort to contain dust during school hours, but will be unable to restrict noise. If you are concerned about the dust or noise affecting your child/children, please discuss this with your child’s teacher, Trudi Jacobson or me.

The Camp Australia Holiday Program will be relocated to Golden Square Primary School for the Term 2 holidays. Please contact Camp Australia for further information.

Please make appropriate arrangements if any of the above points affect you or your child/children. We are hoping for short term pain for long term gain. I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Team China This morning we farewelled Jonah Z, Lezane R and Parker M and their two teachers Leah Daley and Aimee Welton. The group will depart from Melbourne at lunchtime and will arrive in Shanghai, China at approximately 11:00pm (1.00am our time). We look forward to hearing of

their experiences. Follow them on their blog: http://teamchina.global2.vic.edu.au

Morning Club Morning Club will resume next week on Wednesday 8

th at

8:00am. Queen’s Birthday – Public Holiday A reminder that Monday 13

th June is a public holiday.

There will be no school on this day. Student Late Arrivals/Early Departures It is important that your child is at school all day, every day. We ask that appointments etc. be scheduled outside of school hours unless unavoidable so that your child does not arrive after 8:45am, or leave before 3:15pm. If your child does arrive late at school they must report to the office prior to going to their classroom. When they report to the office they will be provided with a late pass to give to their classroom teacher. This process ensures that our attendance records are accurate. In addition, if for some unavoidable reason you need to collect your child early, we require that you or a person authorised by you first visit the office to collect an early departure slip. When you go to the classroom, please give the classroom teacher the slip. Again, these processes are in place to maximise our care for the children and we thank you in advance for your cooperation in these matters. Students Arriving Too Early I am concerned with the number of students arriving prior to 8:35am every morning, some as early as 8:00am. Yard duty does not commence until 8:35am. Children are then supervised. The only exceptions to this are Breakfast Club and Morning Club. Breakfast Club is supervised from 8:10am. Morning Club occurs every week on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:00am in the stadium.

Student Reports Semester 1 student reports will be distributed on Friday 17

th June, and will be followed up with Student Led

Conferences on Tuesday 21st June.

Student Led Conferences Student Led Conferences will be held on Tuesday 21

st

June. Students will only attend for their conference time on this day. Students must wear school uniform to their conference. Each student will spend time preparing their work, their learning goals and their presentation for their parents or carers. It is a very special time for each student. For students to present their work more than once can be quite taxing for them. Where possible, we ask that families co-ordinate diaries so that all parents and carers who intend to come to the student led conference do so at the same time. Meeting times must be booked online. Meeting times will also be available after school on Monday 20

th June. The

booking system will open on Friday 10th June.

The necessary code will be provided in The LINK closer to this date.

PREP 2017 - Enrolment All parents who are intending to enrol their child in Prep at Kennington for next year, 2017, should collect an Information Pack from the school office. The pack includes information pertinent to KPS including the Great Start Transition Program and includes the official school enrolment form. The enrolment form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunisation record must be returned to school by Friday 24th June, 2016. This date is set by the Department of Education. If your child has additional needs including a medical diagnosis, language difficulties, is involved with any Early Intervention services, or if you just have a worry or concern about your child, please make an appointment to see me as soon as possible. If your child is hearing impaired please contact Ms Marg Tope, the leader of the Deaf Facility through the school office.

Before School Care Survey As you aware school supervision commences at 8:35 am each school day. Students should not arrive before this time unless there is an organised and promoted school activity such as Morning Clubs. Recently an increasing number of parents have expressed an interest in Before School Care. The purpose of this survey is to ascertain whether there is enough interest to ask Camp Australia, the organisation who run the After School Care program, to consider running a Before School Care Program at KPS. Please return the attached slip by Friday 10

th June to the

school office.

The Link The Link is the main form of communication with you and the school. The Link will be sent home with the youngest child in each family or look on www.kenningtonps.vic.edu.au. The Link is published on Thursdays. Sometimes, where we need to ensure that a piece of information gets to all of our school community, a notice will be repeated in a number of newsletters. Regards

Choir News Unfortunately our attempts to sign up for the Annual Bendigo Choir Eisteddfod met with unexpected results, as we were told that the places were all filled. Very unusual. I am attempting to find other opportunities in the community for the choir to perform the seven wonderful songs currently in their repertoire. We will be performing “I am the Earth” next Monday at assembly. So this is a “Stay Tuned!” notice. Thank you, Wendy Collishaw

5 Cent Coin Fundraiser The 5 Cent Coin Drive is going well. Each classroom has been provided with a funky money box to collect the coins that are donated to the classrooms. Each Friday our Student School Councillors will collect the coins and provide each classroom with their total. Incentives have been provided for classes to try to collect as many coins as they can. Whilst 5 cent coins are the target denomination, all coins are gratefully accepted. Thank you in advance for your support of this new fundraiser. Funds raised will go towards purchasing classroom reading books. Last week’s winning class was 6C with a total of $22.50. The current overall winner with a total of $105.15 is 4B.

PE News Yesterday, Wednesday 1

st June, Kennington girls team

and boys team participated in the Goldfields and Sandhurst Soccer Tournament. Both teams successfully made it through to the next level, winning all games and working hard in the midfield and forward to create many scoring opportunities throughout the day. Kennington boys and girls team played strongly in the grand final, attacking the ball at every opportunity they had. The girls team scored a golden goal in overtime and the boys scored the winning goal in their overtime! Both teams now move on to the next level, which will be in Swan Hill later this year. Congratulations to all students for representing Kennington with fantastic behaviour and sportsmanship on the day. Thank you to the parents who came and watched, BSE students for umpiring and Mr Ladd and Mr Canobie for training the two teams this year. Well done, Miss Rady

Visual Arts News We have been so busy in the Art Room working on a range of 3 dimensional construction projects. Students in grades 3 and 4 have created fish and animal faces using papier-mâché. Grade 5 students have spent many weeks patiently planning and building little elf houses from plaster, card and natural materials. So cute! Our Grade 6 students have also put hours of work and care into bringing character and personality to their amazing papier-mâché bottle birds. Such wonderful work from our Grade 3 – 6 classes. Daily Home Reading Program

We strongly recommend establishing a daily routine for

your child’s daily home reading. A regular time and place

will help you and your child to establish a regular reading

routine. This is an extremely important part of your child’s

education. We have found that the most effective learning

occurs with an effective home – school partnership.

Netbook Computers

Each class has access to a set of netbook computers that

we integrate into aspects of the curriculum. With

technology, students learn how to log into Mathletics with

their user names and passwords, learn how to create and

publish posters in Microsoft Word and learn how to

research and use different search engines on the internet.

Students are also introduced to cyber safety.

Digital Technologies

Students have begun using Bee Bots in classrooms this

semester. We have integrated the Bee Bots into our Maths

and English curriculum. Students are required to use

locational language to move the Bee Bots. Ask your child

what Bee Bots are!

1/2 Sport

Every Friday morning the Grade 1 and 2 students

complete an hour long rotation of sports activities. Every

week the students complete a different activity with a

different teacher. There is a new focus for sport and

fitness each term.

Bounce Back!

The Bounce Back! Program is a part of the KPS Wellbeing

Program. Students complete regular Bounce Back!

lessons commencing in Grade Prep and finishing in Grade

6. These lessons cover areas including core values,

emotions, relationships and bullying.

Reminders

Please ensure your child has an art smock and a library

bag with their name clearly written on them. Also, now that

the winter has arrived all students should be wearing

winter uniform. Please ensure that jumpers and long pants

or winter tunics are worn and that any beanies and

scarves are in the school colours.
