NUMERACY SUMMER SCHOOL HOMEWORK

The aim of the activities in this book is to help you to improve your numeracyskills.

v You must not use a calculator for any of the activities.

v Try to find a quiet place to work and sit at a table so that youcan do your best work.

v Do your homework early in the evening so that you are not too tired to do your work well.

v If you are having problems, try to find an adult who can help you.

v Your homework should take about thirty minutes. If it is taking a lot longer than that, leave it and tell your teacher the next day.

v Do not worry if you find the work difficult. Do the best you can then leave it and ask your teacher for help the next day.

v The pages at the front of this book are exercises which will be set bythe teacher. You will be told when to do these activities. The pagesat the back are extra tasks that you can do at any time if you want to.

v Fill in the record sheet for each piece of homework you do. Sign itand ask a parent to sign it. You can also make a comment if you want to.

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING IN YOUR HEAD

A Fill in the missing numbers.

1. 3 + 7 + 8 + 4 = 2. 6 + 9 + 5 + 2 =

3. 8 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 4. 4 + 14 + 6 + 9 =

5. 11 + 13 + 15 + 6 = 6. 3 + 8 + 5 + = 23

7. 6 + 9 + 4 + = 26 8. 9 + 8 + + 7 = 31

9. 12 + 16 + 9 + = 48 10. 14 + 9 + + 19 = 52

Adding 19 is the same as adding 20 then subtracting 1.

e.g. 27 + 19 = 27 + 20 - 1 = 46

Subtracting 49 is the same as subtracting 50 then adding 1.

e.g. 83 - 49 = 83 - 50 + 1 = 34

B Copy and complete the following:

1. Adding 29 is the same as ……………………………………………………..

46 + 29 = =

2. Subtracting 69 is the same as ………………………………………………..

93 - 69 = =

3. Adding 38 is the same as ……………………………………………………

27 + 38 = =

4. Subtracting 28 is the same as ………………………………………………..

83 - 28 = =

Adding 41 is the same as adding 40 then adding 1

e.g. 146 + 41 = 146 + 40 + 1 = 187

Subtracting 51 is the same as subtracting 50 then subtracting 1.

e.g. 273 - 51 = 273 - 50 - 1 = 222

C Copy and complete the following:

1. Adding 61 is the same as ……………………………………………………..

123 + 61 = =

2. Subtracting 31 is the same as ………………………………………………..

269 - 31 = =

3. Adding 68 is the same as ……………………………………………………

325 + 68 = =

4. Subtracting 58 is the same as ………………………………………………..

297 - 58 = =

It is often easiest to add two numbers that are close together by doubling anumber and then adding or subtracting something .

e.g. 45 + 46 = 2 x 45 + 1 = 91

39 + 42 = 2 x 40 - 1 + 2 = 81

D Copy and complete the following:

1. 82 + 83 = ………………………………………………………………….

2. 78 + 79 = ………………………………………………………………….

3. 62 + 59 = ………………………………………………………………….
