De heropening van het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is internationaal gevierd als een van de meest geslaagde museumrenovaties van de laatste jaren. De sobere ingrepen van de Spaanse architecten Cruz y Ortiz verhouden zich ontspannen tot het complexe en uit-bundig gedecoreerde gebouw van de oorspronkelijke architect P.J.H. Cuypers. ‘Alsof het altijd zo geweest is’, zou architect Antonio Ortiz opmerken. Niets is minder waar: de relatie van het gebouw tot de collectie, de stad Amsterdam, de wisselende opvattingen over musea en tentoonstellingen en niet te vergeten de Nederlandse identiteit, zijn sinds de bouw in 1885 altijd stormachtig en vaak problematisch geweest. Met Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Restauratie en vernieuwing van een nationaal monument verschijnt de definitieve monografie van het museum en zijn gebouw, vanaf de bouw tot de recente heropening als het ‘Museum van Nederland’.Schuin tegenover het Rijksmuseum, aan de overkant van het Museumplein, ligt het Stedelijk Museum. Daar vindt vanaf oktober 2013 de grootste Malevich-tentoonstelling plaats sinds 1989. The renovation of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is being internationally celebrated as one of the most successful museum overhauls in recent years. The Spanish architects Cruz y Ortiz’s restrained interven-tions sit comfortably within the complex, lavishly decorated building of original architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Bernard Hulsman (1958) studeerde politieke weten-schappen en is sinds 1990 redacteur van NRC Handels-blad. Hij schrijft vooral over architectuur en steden-bouw. Daarnaast publiceerde hij in onder meer Vrij Nederland, De Groene Amsterdammer, Archis, Items en Die Welt.

Double Dutch. Nederlandse architectuur na 1985 biedt een fascinerend en kritisch overzicht van de Neder-landse architectuur van de afgelopen decennia. Van de schraalheid van de jaren tachtig tot de bravoure van de ‘Superdutch’ en van de opkomst van de neotraditionele architectuur tot de duurzaamheid van vandaag.

Architectuurcriticus en journalist Bernard Hulsman (NRC) beschrijft hoe de Nederlandse architectuur in de afgelopen kwarteeuw een ongekende bloei beleefde. Nieuwe belangstelling voor architectuur uit de wederopbouwperiode

De wederopbouw is een belangrijke periode in de Nederlandse cultuurgeschiedenis. In die periode wer-den de sporen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitgewist en werd het land opnieuw opgebouwd. Het was een tijd van schaarste, maar ook van economische groei, optimisme en vernieuwing. Lange tijd vond men de architectuur en monumentale kunst uit deze periode saai en gezapig, maar de laatste jaren is er steeds meer belangstelling en waardering voor het erfgoed uit deze tijd.

Hoewel veel door de jaren heen verloren is gegaan, zijn er in Nederland nog veel sporen van de wederopbouw te ontdekken.

Eind september 2013 organiseert de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) de Week van de wederop-bouw. Tegelijkertijd verschijnen bij nai010 drie publica-ties die het verhaal van de wederopbouw integraal ver-tellen: Monumenten van de wederopbouw, Kunst van de wederopbouw en de Atlas van de wederopbouw.

Dorine van Hoogstraten werkt als zelfstandig architec-tuurhistoricus. Historicus Ben de Vries is werkzaam als projectleider wederopbouw 1959-1965 bij de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

Het overzichtswerk Monumenten van de wederopbouw Nederland 1940-1965. Opbouw en optimisme toont bijna tweehonderd belangwekkende bouwwerken uit de wederopbouwperiode.

Een groot aantal vroeg-naoorlogse bouwwerken is inmiddels gesloopt of onherkenbaar veranderd. Gelukkig groeit de waardering voor de architectuur en stedenbouw uit de jaren 1940, 1950 en 1960. Terecht, want dit boek laat zien dat deze iconen van vernieu-wende architectuur verfi jnder zijn dan menigeen denkt. De diversiteit van de architectuur uit de naoorlogse jaren is verrassend groot. Sommige architecten hadden voor de oorlog al naam gemaakt, zoals Dudok, Granpré Molière, Rietveld, Van den Broek en Bakema; anderen, onder wie Warners, Ingwersen en Van Gool, stonden aan het begin van hun carrière en kregen de kans in de wederopbouwwijken markante gebouwen te realiseren.

Aan de hand van thema’s als infrastructuur, economie, cultuur en herdenking, wordt geschetst hoe Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog uit de as herrees en zich ontwikkelde tot een prille welvaartsstaat.

Yteke Spoelstra is zelfstandig kunst- en architectuur-historicus. Frans van Burkom is zelfstandig kunsthisto-risch onderzoeker. Kunsthistoricus Simone Vermaat is werkzaam bij de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

In de wederopbouwperiode (1940-1965) werden veel bouwwerken voorzien van kunstwerken. Muurschil-deringen, mozaïek, glas-in-lood en (wand-)tapijten werden speciaal ontworpen voor een bepaalde plek in of aan een gebouw. Na jaren van veronachtzaming en sloop, groeit nu de publieke belangstelling voor de wederopbouwperiode en haar bijzondere erfgoed. Deze publicatie vertelt het verhaal van de opkomst, bloei en teloorgang van de wederopbouwkunst in Nederland.

Kunstenaars zoals Dick Elffers, Wally Elenbaas, Louis van Roode en Karel Appel streefden in de sobere naoorlogse jaren naar een synthese van kunst en architectuur. Dit ideaal hing samen met het verlangen naar een collectieve en samenbindende kunst voor een samenleving die moest herstellen van de gevolgen van de oorlog. Bijzondere technieken zoals sgraffi to en glas-in-beton werden herontdekt of nieuw ontwikkeld. Dit boek bevat portretten van kunstenaars, kunstwer-ken, interviews, technieken en historisch en veel recent beeldmateriaal.

Anita Blom is specialist wederopbouw en naoorlogse stedenbouw bij de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

Deze atlas biedt een bijzonder overzicht van de grootse vernieuwing van stad en land tijdens de wederopbouw-periode van Nederland. Met de selectie van 30 gebie-den geeft de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed in deze uitgave een afspiegeling van de ruimtelijke ambities van Nederland in de jaren 1940-1965.

Nederland ging in deze periode grootschalig ‘op de schop’. De oorlogsschade werd hersteld, bijvoorbeeld in Rotterdam, Nijmegen en Rhenen. Vervolgens wist de Nederlandse stedenbouw met omvangrijke stads-uitbreidingen internationaal de aandacht op zich te vestigen. Tegelijkertijd deed schaalvergroting door ruilverkaveling zijn intrede als oplossing voor de plat-telandsvernieuwing in Europees verband.

Deze publicatie heeft een brede benadering met essays van specialisten op het terrein van stedenbouw, (land-schaps)architectuur, landbouw, ruimtelijke ordening en volkshuisvesting. No building in the Netherlands has such a tempestuous relationship to Dutch identity as the Rijksmuseum. This book traces the history of the national Rijksmu-seum project from its birth, midwifed by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers to the formulation of the restoration plan and the long road to the successful reopening in 2013.

The Rijksmuseum has been viewed – and criticised – as a national symbol ever since it was built in 1885. Its neo-Gothic architecture was deemed too Catholic, the building too large and complex. And yet the ‘Rijks’ proved an effective mirror and signboard for the Dutch national self-image.

In this book, a team of specialists exhaustively docu-ments the design history of the building while taking into account the cultural, social and political environ-ment. It explores the building’s relationship to the collection, its positioning in the city and the role played by museum directors, the Chief Government Architect and the ministries, heritage conservation officials, the architects Cruz y Ortiz and Van Hoogevest Archi-tecten, and the interior architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte in bringing about the most famous renovation in the Netherlands.

Geen gebouw in Nederland heeft een zo onstuimige relatie met de Nederlandse identiteit als het Rijksmuseum. Dit boek volgt de geschiedenis van het ‘Nationale Project Rijksmuseum’. Van de totstandkoming van het gebouw onder Cuypers, de relatie tot de collectie, de situering in de stad en de maatschappelijke context, tot de formu-lering van de opgave voor de restauratie en de lange weg naar de succesvolle heropening in 2013.

The Glass Farm makes for an arresting sight on the market square in the Dutch town of Schijndel. Just as fascinating is the history of how the building came into being. This book tells the story of Winy Maas, who at age 18 asked the mayor to do something with the empty space that had been left in Schijndel’s market square since Operation Market Garden bombing in 1944. It took 33 years for the building to be erected. The chronicle of the Glass Farm is a history that reads like a novel.

Author Gerard Buenen, editor-in-chief of Schijndels Weekblad, has written a gripping, fact-fi lled biography of the building. The story is accompanied by the photo-graphy of Niels Stomps and informative illustrations by MVRDV.

This double issue of OASE sheds light on a different set of modern architectural approaches by architects who lingered, as it were, ‘in the shadow’ of their canonical peers. In this way OASE offers points of departure to rethink contemporary design attitudes.

A so-called Shadow Canon epitomizes an alternative set of design sensibilities and attitudes (on typology, tectonics and composition) and advocates the presence of tradition as a means of rearticulating the modern. Leading authors describe how modern architects like Fernand Pouillon, Fernando Tavora en Giovanni Muzio occupied themselves with the language and the history of architecture, both recent and classic.

Their work was a quest to create continuities with the architecture of the period before modernism. The notion of a Shadow Canon offers the opportunity to broaden the existing knowledge on modern design attitudes, and to refl ect on the relation between the ca-nonical works of the high modern avant-garde and such alternative design attitudes, and what impact this might have on contemporary architecture practice and theory.

DASH 9 focuses on the objectives and outcomes of housing exhibitions. Exhibitions featuring actual dwellings – temporary or permanent – as built objects have had a signifi cant impact on the development of 20th-century residential architecture.

Essays by Frederique van Andel, Lucy Craegh, Sandra Wagner-Conzelmann and Noud de Vreeze. An interview with Barry Bergdoll delves into the tradition of full-scale exhibition houses in the sculpture garden at the Muse-um of Modern Art in New York. The planning documentation encompasses the exhi-bitions Ein Dokument Deutscher Kunst in Darmstadt, Germany (1901), the Werkbund show in Vienna (1932), Quartiere Triennale 8 in Milan, Bo01 City of Tomorrow in Malmö (2001) and the IBA in Hamburg, which ended in 2013.

The Why Factory dreams the Green City. There is confu-sion about what green means for design, architecture and urbanism. Winy Maas asserts that green projects are still disconnected efforts which fail to attain the scale of the interventions that are actually called for. Green is fashionable, but its design potentials remain unexplored. Green Dream questions what is currently labelled as ‘green’ and in conjunction with experts elaborates how it ought to be defi ned. It challenges architectural conventions and looks into the potentials of new green architecture.

The Why Factory droomt van de Groene Stad. Over de betekenis van het begrip ‘groen’ heerst verwarring onder ontwerpers, architecten en stedenbouwkundi-gen. Winy Maas stelt dat groene projecten nog steeds onsamenhangende pogingen zijn waarvan de schaal-grootte het niet haalt bij die van de interventies die in feite nodig zijn. Groen is ‘in’, maar met het ontwerp-potentieel ervan wordt weinig gedaan. Green Dream stelt vraagtekens bij wat tegenwoordig als ‘groen’ wordt aangemerkt en onderzoekt in samenwerking met deskundigen hoe de term zou moeten worden gedefi -nieerd. Rotterdam landscape architects LOLA (LOst LAnd-scapes), winners of the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for Young Architects 2013, design and study landscapes that are forgotten, derelict or about to change. Since its founding in 2006, the agency has worked on conceptual as well as realisable projects in the inner city, on the outskirts and in the country.

LOLA’s designers combine a knowledge of large-scale ecosystems with their own ideas about space and an open attitude that enables them to work collaboratively with other specialists, such as the garden designer Piet Oudolf and the urbanists at Maxwan.

LOLA, who previously published an atlas of urban outskirts and a dike atlas for the island of IJsselmonde, shape sublime experiences in the city and landscape in their own individual way, evincing an infectious new romanticism. In this book, they argue for a design practice centred on human experience.

De Gouden Piramide is de jaarlijkse rijksprijs voor inspirerend opdrachtgeverschap. In 2013 is het thema gebiedsontwikkeling. Een jury onder voorzitterschap van de Rijksbouwmeester kiest uit vijf genomineerden een winnaar.

De tijd van dwingende masterplannen en grote stads-uitbreidingen is voorbij. Gebiedsontwikkeling gaat tegenwoordig steeds vaker over herstructurering van de bestaande stad (en het landschap) en over het bieden van ruimte aan kleinschalige initiatieven, ‘van onderop’. Ruimtelijk ontwerpen is een wezenlijk onderdeel van de Nederlandse cultuur. Als klein land in de delta van Rijn, Maas en Schelde, met een hoge ruimtedruk, heeft Neder-land een lange historie in het welbewust vormgeven van de leefomgeving. Met de serie Design and Politics, een initiatief van het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu, wordt een beeld gegeven van het samenspel en de wisselwerking tussen ruimtelijk ontwerpen en de politiek.

De serie bestaat inmiddels uit zeven delen en een extra deel over de Olympische Spelen.

Spatial design is an essential part of Dutch culture. As a densely populated small country situated in the delta of the Rhine, Maas and Schelde rivers, the Netherlands has a long history in well-considered design of the environ-ment. At eighty, internationally acclaimed Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger invited colleagues and students to refl ect on the future of architecture. At the beginning of the twentieth century, two avant-garde movements emerged that sought to change the world: expressionism and constructivism. Utopia 1900–1940 paints a portrait of the two schools and the inspiring work they produced.

The leaders of these movements believed they were standing at the threshold of a new era, and they sought to shape its reality in a forceful, radical way. They created the utopian concept of A New Man in a New Society: a total concept that encompassed art, architec-ture and design. From teaspoons to skyscrapers, they designed life with the goal of improving human beings and society. Yet philosophically the two movements were diametrically opposed. For the expressionists, individual freedom came fi rst; for the constructivists, the individual was fi rst and foremost part of a larger whole.

This book provides depth and context for the exhibition at Leiden’s Museum De Lakenhal through contributions from experts and showcases the most important works.

Aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw kwamen er twee avant-gardebewegingen op die de wereld wilden ver-anderen: het expressionisme en het constructivisme. Utopia 1900-1940 presenteert deze twee stromingen en het inspirerende werk dat ze hebben voortgebracht.

De belangrijkste voormannen van deze bewegingen hadden het gevoel aan de vooravond van een nieuw tijdperk te staan. Aan de verwerkelijking hiervan willen zij op overtuigende en radicale wijze vormgeven. Ze ontwikkelden een utopisch concept voor Een Nieuwe Mens in een Nieuwe Samenleving. Dit totaalconcept omvat zowel kunst als architectuur en design. Van thee-lepeltje tot wolkenkrabber ontwerpt men het leven met het doel de mens en de samenleving beter te maken. Desondanks staan beide stromingen in hun opvat-tingen diametraal tegenover elkaar: bij het expres-sionisme staat de vrijheid van het individu voorop. Bij de constructivisten geldt het individu als deel van het grote geheel.

In deze publicatie geven experts verdieping en context aan de tentoonstelling en worden de belangrijkste werken afgebeeld.

The Russian literary scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903-1996) was a friend and admirer of the modern painters of his time. He collected work by masters such as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, Olga Rozanova, El Lissitzky, Vasiliy Chekrygin, Mikhail Matyushin and Vla-dimir Tatlin, compiling an extensive collection of Rus-sian avant-garde art beginning at the end of the 1920s. The Russian Avant-Garde provides a full overview of the unique Khardziev-Chaga collection, housed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 1997.

The collection contains numerous works on paper, including gouaches, watercolours, futurist book cover designs, sketches and studies. These items deepen un-derstanding of the work of these Russian avant-garde artists. This part of this important collection has been reproduced and written about here for the fi rst time.

In October 2013, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will stage the largest survey exhibition of Kazimir Malevich’s work in 20 years. Works from the Khardzhiev-Chaga collection will comprise a signifi cant part of this major show.

Khardzhiev verzamelde werk van meesters als Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, Olga Rozanova, El Lissitzky, Vasiliy Chekrygin, Mikhail Matyushin en Vladimir Tatlin. Zo bracht hij vanaf eind jaren 1920 een omvangrijke verzameling Russische avant-gardekunst bijeen. De Russische avant-garde biedt een compleet overzicht van de unieke collectie Khardziev-Chaga, die zich sinds 1997 in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam bevindt.

De collectie bevat veel werken op papier, waaronder gouaches, aquarellen, omslagontwerpen van futuris-tische boeken, schetsen en studies. Door deze werken wordt een beter begrip van het werk van deze Russi-sche avant-gardekunstenaars mogelijk. Het is voor het eerst dat dit deel van zijn belangrijke collectie gepubli-ceerd en beschreven wordt.

In oktober 2013 presenteert het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam het grootste overzicht van Kazimir Malevich sinds twintig jaar. De werken uit de Khardzhiev-Chaga collectie vormen een belangrijk onderdeel van deze tentoonstelling.

Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL), established in 1995 by Joep van Lieshout, is a multidisciplinary collective that engages in conceiving and producing contemporary art, design and architecture.

This richly illustrated publication provides an overview of AVL’s often provocative work: from art objects, items of furniture and mobile architecture to wholly self-suffi cient survival campers, autonomous communes and surrealistic architectural projects.

Prix de Rome 2013 profi les the four talented young artists nominated for this edition of the prestigious award. The work of Christian Friedrich, Falke Pisano, Remco Torenbosch and Ola Vasiljeva was shortlisted by a group of 35 scouts and an international jury of experts.

Stefan Kuiper and Roos van der Lint, nominees for the 2013 Young Art Critics’ Prize, contribute an essay to the book. With this commission, the Prix de Rome underli-nes the importance of supporting a new generation of art critics.

The Prix de Rome is the Netherlands’ oldest, most im-portant prize for visual artists under 40. Its aims to fi nd talented artists and encourage them to develop their work and their visibility. From 2013, the competition is organised by the Mondriaan Foundation. The winner will receive €40,000 and a residency in Rome.

De publicatie Prix de Rome 2013 presenteert portretten van vier getalenteerde jonge kunstenaars die deel-nemen aan de Prix de Rome. For the fi rst time, the much-talked-about Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook 2012/13 is available in digital format. This edition contains the same content as the printed book, with large photographs and zoomable fl oor plans and cross-sections. The 'international calling card of Dutch architecture' (as the newspaper De Volkskrant called it) is available from the iBookstore in English and Dutch editions.

Architectenbureau Brinkman & Van der Vlugt (1925-1936) is vooral bekend van de wereldberoemde Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam. In november 2012 verscheen het eerste overzichtswerk van dit Rotterdamse archi-tectenbureau, waarvan nu tevens een digitale editie beschikbaar komt.

The architectural practice Brinkman & Van der Vlugt (1925-1936) is best known for the world-famous Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam. In November 2012, nai010 published the fi rst retrospective on this Rotterdam architecture fi rm. A digital version is now available.
