The generosity of Steck parents, and our surrounding community and business partners, never ceases to amaze and inspire us. How lucky we all are to be a part of this supportive community! We would like to give a special shout out to Kimberly Mitchell and Shelby Beebe for chairing this event. Their hard work and dedication to the success of this event is appreciated and admired!! The PTA has many things going on this month at Steck from the fun "walk to school" event in early October, to the fall room parties on October 31st, but we wanted to use this space this month to raise awareness about a very special issue that effects all district 204 parents. SB-16 is an Illinois State Senate bill that passed the state senate in the spring. It is waiting to be voted on in the House in the late fall. This bill, nicknamed "The Robin Hood Bill" aims to redistribute school funding among Illinois school districts. While we can all agree that underfunded schools are a major issue that need to be addressed, there are many reasons that this bill is not the right piece of legislation to actually accomplish the job; not the least of which is that it will end up costing District 204 over $10 million dollars, even though our cost per student spending is actually less (sometimes by almost half!) than several of the districts that our funds (YOUR tax dollars!) will be redistributed to! This is a crucial topic and time is short to get something done about it. The district is holding several informational meetings about SB-16, and you can view the list of those meeting dates here: http:// www.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=64359 the closest one to us will take place at Fischer Middle School on October 8th at 7:00pm. Any district 204 parent or community member is welcome to attend. Topics covered will include: What SB-16 is, how it will impact our district, and what YOU can do about it. We urge all parents to seriously consider attending one of these meetings. This is a very serious topic that has the potential to make life in the 204 school district very challenging for our students. Jay Strang, our district 204 financial guru, and Dr. Sullivan, our new superintendent, will be the speakers at these meetings. Hope to see you there! In closing, we would like to encourage all PTA members to attend out next general meeting on October 14th at 7:00pm in the Steck MPR. Mrs. Christakes, Steck LMC Director, will be our guest speaker and she will walk us through the apps and databases that our children use with their BYOT devices every day. This is a topic we have had a lot of demand for, so we hope to see you there! Additionally, we are very excited to ask all PTA members to mark their calendars for November 12th at 7:00pm, as we have been able to schedule Dr. Sullivan, our new district 204 superintendent, to be our guest speaker! She will be addressing topics at your request, and we will be sending out a request for questions ahead of time, so please watch your email in early November for the opportunity to submit your questions! Have a wonderful October and thank you, as always, for your continued support of the Steck PTA! Kathy Lengiewicz and Kerry Clemm Steck Co-Presidents

Please Join Us in Supporting Indian Prairie Parents’

Council’s Annual

Winter Coat & Boot Drive!!!

During the month of October, the Indian Prairie Parents’ Council is sponsoring

a district-wide winter coat and boot collection. Due to the growing needs

within our district, IPPC is collecting “new and gently-used,” warm, clean coats and boots of all

sizes from infant to adult. The coats will be distributed to families in need within our district in

early November.

The Steck PTA will be collecting gently worn coats and boots in October from the 6th through the

29th. Please drop off in the bin outside of the school front office.

If you have any questions about the coat drive in your school, please contact your local PTA/

PTSA (Tina O’Sullivan at [email protected]) or contact IPPC Secretary, Tami Reid at

[email protected]. – Please put COAT DRIVE in the subject line.
