    Overview of the Division’s mission

The Test Centre Division is in charge of ESTEC Test centre where satellites and other space hardwares from ESA

are tested before they are sent to space. For this purpose, the Test Centre is equipped with a large number of world class

test facilities, and is developping new test method and measuring techniques. The tasks handles by the division are

    - Operation, maintenance and updating of the facilities of the ESTEC Test Centre

    -

Mechanical and electrical engineering support to projects and ESTEC laboratories-  Assembly, integration and verification support to projects

    - Study and development of new test methods and test facilities

    - Study, development and application of new measurement equipment (e.g. videogrammetry, thermography)

    and data acquisition systems

Overview of the field of activity proposed

    1. Modal analysis of a spacecraft study based on high speed videogrammetry

It is very important to have a proper mechanical model of the satellites we are launching in order to be able to perform

proper simulation. Usually the acceleration responses of 100’s of accelerometers is used during the vibration tests to

make a modal identification of the specimen under test and extract the parameters necessary to update the mechanical

models. Videogrammetry is a measurement technique allowing to measure displacement from pictures. It is proposed

to make tests with high speed cameras and try to make modal identification on a few specimens.

    2. Design of a new IR emissivity bench for complete BRDF sample measurement

When measuring the temperature of an object using infrared camera, a good knowledge of the optical properties of the

object under test is essential to be able to get good results. The optical properties measurement of the different

materials are measured internally to be able to demonstrate a full traceability of the measurement. The purpose is to

design, manufacture and install such a test bench.

    3. design of multipurpose ground support equipment for micro-cameras

The Test Centre is using videogrametry to measure thermo-elastic deformation for about 2 decades. We have just

qualified the new generation of camera that we want to use but we still need to develop the MGSE (Mechanical Ground

Support Equipment) that is necessary to use the camera in our space simulator.

    Educational and other requirements

Applicants should have just completed, or be in their final year of a University course at Masters Level (or equivalent)

in a mechanical engineering. They shall have a good knowledge of 3-D CAD tools (such as CATIA), numerical

simulation tools (matlab/Simulink) and have hands on experience in laboratory work.

Applicants should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multi-cultural

environment, both independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must be fluent in English and/or French, the working languages of the Agency. A good proficiency inEnglish is required.
