Are we committed to Spiritual Growth? After Paul had invested over a year with a church plant in Corinth, he wrote back to the new believers with these challenging words, “Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly - mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready” (1 Cor. 3:1-2). These words challenge us also to consider where we are in our spiritual growth and whether we are committed to disciple-making strategies that will foster such growth. As we continue this newsletter series on why new people would become part of this church, it is important for us to recognize that new people will often come our way because they want to improve their lives. Many are hoping to be better in some way, whether that means being kinder and gentler or finding deeper meaning and purpose for their lives. We know that the greater abundant life is found only in Christ. But are we committed to personal spiritual growth in a way that will also help others grow? One big step of commitment is for us to encourage every member and frequent guest to get connected to a Bible study class or group. Greater growth happens when we are being fed God’s Word in a context where faith can be demonstrated through personal relationships and ministry care. In September, we will begin a Sunday morning emphasis called, “Every Person Matters,” with the goal of every member and frequent guest to find that greater smaller connection. We will host a Discover FBC Lunch on Sunday, 9.8, as a launching point. -Jason

Continue to dream about greater ministry strategies as we continue our pursuit of greater gospel relationships and greater financial freedom. We will share a new gospel vision with these dreams in mind at our next leadership Summit. Join us for that vision time on Sunday, 9..8, at 4p in our downstairs Gathering Circle.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Evening at the Ball Park Our Men’s Ministry is inviting men of all ages to the Lookout’s Game on Monday, 8.26. There are two ways to join the fun. You can meet us on the church campus at 6p to ride the bus or meet at the downtown stadium at 6:45p. We will purchase tickets at the gate.

Free to Be Concert “Music Sets You Free” is the community concert on Saturday, 8.24, at 5p, in our main Worship Center. The musical artists will be Eric Shaw, Ryan Stinson, Dave Boling, and many more. The concert is free, but will be a special opportunity to contribute to our Countdown to Financial Freedom. ‘Every Person Matters’ In September, we are encouraging every one in worship to connect with a Bible study group. You matter and we have a place for you! We are also challenging our Sunday Bible Groups to provide extra seats, invite and welcome new people! Statistics confirm that small group involvement is the key to a satisfactory experience in any church. Pray with us for our church to have 1:1 ratio for the worship to group attendance.

Blood Assurance Campaign Our North Georgia Blood Assurance is leading a campaign this August to encourage new and current donors to rally around an important need. Blood supplies are low and now is the time to help ensure that our local hospitals have what they need to save lives. Donate at our local center at 2720 Lafayette Road in Fort O. The week of August 19-24 is church week.

Keenagers’ Meeting Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson will speak at the regular meeting of the FBCFO Keenagers on Tuesday, 9.10, 10:30a. His topic will be "A Day in the Life of a County Sheriff.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

The above verses tell us that Satan targets his attacks on our minds. Paul talks about speculations, the knowledge of God, and taking every thought captive. Where do speculations come from? The mind. Where is knowledge rooted? In the mind. Where do thoughts come from? The mind. The Christian who wants to live differently must learn to think differently. We must take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.

But, we can’t fight spiritual battles with fleshy weapons. One doesn’t shoot an elephant with a pistol. One cannot take thoughts captive by wishing them away, or trying to not think about them. We must renew our minds (Rom. 12:2) by memorizing and meditating on scripture. At the same time we must be careful with what we expose ourselves to: What we read, listen to, watch, and consume on social media.

If we truly want to win, we must diligently fight the spiritual battle. Daily, hourly, and moment by moment we must not allow Satan to gain a stronghold on our minds. We must be quick to dispel the beginnings of non-godly thoughts (anything that is contrary to scripture including how we see ourselves). We must protect our minds from anything that is opposed to God and His Kingdom. Worship Well!

ANDY ATKINSONpastor of discipleship & families - [email protected]

We can never ignore the Spirit’s work to bring us more aware of ourselves. How quick we are to question the motives of others, yet we are so slow to question our own! When others harm us, we may assume the worst of intentions. When we are guilty, we often excuse our offenses, concluding that others are far too sensitive. Regardless of how we monitor our motives, God weighs them in His scales of righteousness. It is futile to try to deceive God with our pious justifications, for He sees our hearts. Is it possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason? Of course! You can attend worship services with a heart that is far from worshipful (Isa. 1:10-17). Could you show concern for the poor and yet have a heart that is desiring the praise of others? Judas did (John 12:4-8). Could you make bold statements of love for Christ and actually be aiding the oppression of God’s will? Peter did (Matt. 16:21-23). Could you offer sacrifices to God and be in total disobedience to Him? King Saul did (1 Sam. 13:8-9). We learn how outside surfaces are not good judges. The Spirit reveals the heart and whether the heart is open to God. Could we pray with the wrong motives? James said we can (James 4:3). A practice of listening instead of simply talking keeps us aware of God’s heart and our own. Many things cause us to do what we do. We are often motivated by good things, such as love for God, compassion, generosity, and faith. Or our actions can come from unhealthy motives such as pride, insecurity, ambition, lust, greed, guilt, anger, fear, and hurt. It is even possible to do the best things based on the worst motives. When the Lord measures our motives He looks for one thing: love. That is a hard place to arrive at for anyone. All that we do should proceed from our love for God and for others (1 Cor. 13). Let’s take some time to look at past our actions to what lies behind them. Ask God to show us what He sees when He examines our motives.
