To me, being an effective teacher is not merely about relaying knowledge and

demonstrating skills to my students. Instead, I find contentment in having to inspire

my students to achieve more than what they could imagine. I believe that every

student has his/her own unique potential, which has to be discovered, and be

allowed to develop to its full capacity. Students should be shown the different doors

that they could enter, as teachers guide them to enter with positive spirits, mind and

soul. I find ‘motivational interviewing’ to be helpful in assisting my students adapt

themselves to the highly demanding academic load, while creating a balance to a

well-rounded life via fulfillment of non-academic achievements. I consistently

emphasized on the importance of maintaining psychological and social wellbeing,

while encouraging my students to strive for academic excellence, professional

development and personal endeavour.

I also believe that a ‘multi-sectoral approach’ should be instilled in the teaching of

dentistry, especially in my area of expertise, which is Special Needs Dentistry. While

it is my role to educate my students about the oral health care of people with special

health care needs, I feel that my teaching responsibility should also be extended to

other individuals who are involved with caring for this patient cohort. As such, I am

committed to developing innovative teaching and learning materials to be utilized by

dental and non-dental healthcare practitioners and students, as well as special

education teachers, caregivers and disability advocates. I hope to reach and engage

as many individuals as I could to collaboratively promote oral health, in an attempt to

achieve systemic health and overall wellbeing of patients with special healthcare

needs.
