La semaine se poursuit avec le plus récent opus de la chorégraphe, RADICALE VITALITÉ, SOLOS ET DUOS, rassemblant des fragments d’œuvres revisités dans une construction toute en intelligence et où les clins d’œil à son répertoire entier sont multiples.

This week dedicated to Marie Chouinard is a highly anticipated moment in our season, and we’re delighted to welcome so many of you. Dance is a living art, and major works are too rarely restaged.

We’re thrilled to present a masterpiece of the dance repertoire, an iconic work that marks its 15 th anniversary this year: bODY_rEMIX/ les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG.

The week continues with the choreographer’s most recent creation, RADICALE VITALITÉ, SOLOS ET DUOS, which brings together fragments of several works, brilliantly revisited in a dance anthology with multiple references to her entire repertoire.

Dans une relecture de l’œuvre musicale de Jean-Sébastien Bach – béquilles, pointes, barres horizontales, harnais – deviennent les prolongements des corps des 13 danseurs et danseuses. Ici, les extensions entravent le mouvement et là, le libèrent, créant des figures et des motifs gestuels inusités, ouvrant sur un univers d’explorations ludiques dans lequel solos, duos, trios et ensembles font écho à la condition humaine et où se réinvente le potentiel infini du corps en mouvement.

Depuis sa création en 2005, il y a 15 ans déjà, bODY_rEMIX/les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG connaît un parcours exceptionnel. Cette œuvre phare du répertoire de la chorégraphe fut présentée dans 58 villes de 22 pays. Esthète du hors norme, Marie Chouinard, offre ici une réflexion sur les effleurements entre l’indéfinissable de l’Autre et la fulgurance de la Beauté. Subtils et extravagants, somptueux et sauvages, les mouvements sondent le mystère insoluble du corps, du vivant.

In this new reading of the famous musical work by Johann Sebastian Bach, crutches, spikes, horizontal bars, harnesses become extensions of the bodies of thirteen dancers. Some of these extensions hinder movement while others liberate it, creating unusual figures and gestural patterns, opening onto a universe of playful exploration in which solos, duets, trios and ensembles reflect the human condition and serve as a medium for the reinvention of the infinite potential of the moving body.

Since its creation in 2005, fifteen years ago, bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS has seen an exceptional trajectory. This flagship work from the choreographer’s repertoire has been presented in 58 cities in 22 countries. With bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, Marie Chouinard, an extraordinary aesthete, presents a reflection on the encounter between the elusive Other and dazzling beauty. Subtle and extravagant, sumptuous and wild, the movements probe the insoluble mystery of the body, of the living being.

RADICALE VITALITÉ, SOLOS ET DUOS30. 31 JAN 1 FÉV 2020

Marie Chouinard a puisé au répertoire de la compagnie pour composer un recueil chorégraphique constitué de solos et de duos. Elle a porté un nouveau regard sur ces petites formes chorégraphiques, issues ou non des œuvres de groupe, et elle les a revisitées : nouveaux costumes, mises en scène, environnements sonores. La chorégraphe a aussi déterré deux pièces qui n’avaient jamais été portées à la scène et qui étaient demeurées dans ses cartables. Et elle a créé deux tout nouveaux duos.

Ces 25 miniatures dansées, de durées variant de 1 à 10 minutes, offrent une relecture de ces courtes formes devenues autonomes et inscrites dans une longue et profonde démarche de création. Une vitalité radicale : radicale, du latin radix : racine.

Marie Chouinard delved into the company’s repertoire to compose a new work consisting of solos and duets. She brought a new perspective to these small choreographic forms and recreated them: new costumes or sound environments, new choreographic adaptations, etc. She also unearthed certain projects which, until then, had remained on the pages of the choreographer’s notebooks. And she created two brand new duets.

These 25 dance miniatures of 1 to 10 minutes duration have become stand-alone pieces in a long and profound creative process. Radical vitality, that is, radical from the latin radix, root.

En 1990, la soliste fonde la COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD qui jouit depuis d’une réputation mondiale. Auteure, artiste visuelle, scénographe et réalisatrice, Marie Chouinard a également à son actif installations, performances, films, photographies, dessins, poèmes, récits et une application. Véritable ambassadrice culturelle du Québec, Marie Chouinard est récipiendaire de plusieurs prix et distinctions soulignant sa contribution au monde des arts, dont le Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal, le Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada, le Prix Positano et un Bessie Award; elle est officière de l’Ordre du Canada, chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France et compagne de l’Ordre national des arts et des lettres du Québec. En 2019, le livre ZÉRO DOUZE (380 pages) de Marie Chouinard est publié aux éditions du passage.

Marie Chouinard, dancer and choreographer, is founding president of the Prix de la Danse de Montréal, and director of dance at the Venice Biennale. In 1990, the soloist founded the COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD, which has since enjoyed a solid reputation all over the world. An author, artist, stage designer and director, her opus also includes installations, performances, films, photographs, drawings, poems, stories and applications.
