Carr was een van de grootste beoefenaren van het genre van de onmogelijke misdaad en de gesloten-kamer moord. detective: Dr. Gideon Fell Dr. Fell is een flamboyante, omvangrijke, aan drank verslaafde detective. Hij heeft een boevensnor, draagt een platte hoed en een cape die om hem heenfladdert als een tent. Hij draagt een pince-nez en rookt een pijp. Als je hem tegenkomt, lijkt het wel of je de kerstman ontmoet. Hij lijkt op G.K. Chesterton, waarvoor Carr grote bewondering had en die hij als zijn leermeester beschouwde, maar nooit ontmoet heeft. Fell is gespecialiseerd in het oplossen van moorden die lijken te zijn begaan door middel van tovenarij en bovennatuurlijke krachten, maar waarvan de oplossingen volledig rationeel zijn. Dr. Fell heeft een B.A. en Ph.D. van Harvard, een M.A. van Oxford en een graad in de rechten van de universiteit van Edinburgh, maar praktiseerde nooit. Hij is lexicograaf en schrijft boeken over pseudogeleerde boeken als ‘de minnaressen van de Britse koningen’ en ‘Engelse drinkgewoonten’, heel toepasselijk op Fell zelf die verzot is op bier. Als Scotland Yard geen raad meer weet met een ogenschijnlijk onmogelijke misdaad, komt zij naar Dr. Fell.
