As skin ages, epidermal cell turnover slows down:

Cells take up to 40 days (instead of 28 days) to depart the stratum basale, become keratinized and shed at the stratum corneum.

Old senescent cells accumulate brown melanoid pigment while

the thickened keratin layer accumulates a yellow-orange colour (resulting in pigmentation and age spots).
