Hooggewaardeerd onderwijs Het onderwijs en het onderzoek van de Faculteit Rechtswetenschappen

in Tilburg staat hoog aangeschreven in zowel Nederlandse onderzoeken

(Elsevier, Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs) als internationale rankings

(Amerikaanse Social Science Research Network). Het juridisch onder-

zoek in Tilburg is in 2010 als beste van Nederland beoordeeld (rapport

Thuis op de campus

De Universiteit van Tilburg heeft een prachtige, overzichtelijke campus;

alle gebouwen liggen dicht bij elkaar en de campus is goed bereikbaar

per fiets, trein en bus.

De Universiteit van Tilburg stelt hoge eisen aan technologie. Dit houdt

in dat je vrijwel overal op de campus kunt inloggen op pc’s en draad-

loos kunt internetten. Alle cursusinformatie wordt online aangeboden

via Blackboard. De compleet vernieuwde bibliotheek is elke dag

toegankelijk om rustig te kunnen studeren.

Sterk internationaal georiënteerd Zowel het onderzoek als het onderwijs is in Tilburg sterk internationaal

georiënteerd. De rechtenfaculteit heeft een groot netwerk met andere

rechtenfaculteiten over de hele wereld. Dit betekent dat we kennis kunnen

uitwisselen, maar ook dat je zelf studeert in een internationale context.

Persoonlijk contact

Uniek voor de Universiteit van Tilburg is dat het onderwijs kleinschalig

is. Docenten en hoogleraren zijn daardoor gemakkelijk benaderbaar

Waarom een master in Tilburg volgen? Master Bestuurkunde Geloofwaardigheid in Politiek en Bestuur

Bestuurskundigen bestuderen de manier waarop overheid, bedrijfs-

leven, maatschappelijke organisaties en burgers richting geven aan alle

onderwerpen die voor grote groepen mensen van belang zijn. Veiligheid,

studiefinanciering, wachtlijsten, spoorwegen, integratie, milieu.

Voorbeelden die laten zien dat er nog veel kan worden verbeterd in

onze samenleving. Ook is duidelijk dat dit niet (altijd) meer kan met een

ouderwets opererende overheid, die denkt de zaken zelf te kunnen

regelen. De vraagstukken van vandaag zijn zo ingewikkeld en er zijn

zoveel verschillende spelers bij betrokken, dat besturing vanuit één

centrum vaak niet meer werkt. Het openbaar bestuur verandert en

bestuurskundigen spelen daarin een vooraanstaande rol.

Ze sleutelen mee aan het vernieuwen van het openbaar bestuur,

op internationaal, nationaal, regionaal en lokaal niveau. Ze leveren

grensoverschrijdende bijdragen als onderzoeker, docent en adviseur.

De masteropleiding Bestuurskunde werkt toe naar een verdere

verdieping van de kennis en vaardigheden van bachelorstudenten

Bestuurskunde. Inspiratiebron en referentiekader is het onderzoeks-

programma ‘Geloofwaardigheid in Politiek en Bestuur’ van de

Tilburgse School voor Politiek en Bestuur.

Research in Public Administration & Organizational ScienceWil je een volleerd bestuurskundig onderzoeker worden, denk dan ook

Wat houdt deze master in?Opzet van de opleidingDe master Bestuurskunde heeft een omvang van 60 ECTS (European

Credit Transfer System, 1 ECTS omvat 28 uur). Je kunt deze opleiding

afronden in één jaar. De 60 ECTS zijn in drie categorieën onder te

brengen: de verplichte vakken (18), keuzeprofiel inclusief atelier (12),

vrije keuzevakken (12) en het scriptietraject (18). In het masterjaar

werken studenten gericht toe naar een thesis op masterniveau. In

de master wordt aansluiting gezocht bij het onderzoeksprogramma

‘Geloofwaardigheid in Politiek en Bestuur’.

Theorieën en thema’s worden uitgediept in verplichte hoofdvakken en de

ateliers van het eerste en tweede semester. Daarnaast maakt de student een

‘Kiezen voor Bestuurskunde in Tilburg is kiezen voor een kleinschalige opleiding waarin je veel contact hebt met

docenten en studenten. Je maakt kennis met boeiende inzichten: door het bestuderen van klassieke teksten, maar

Classic questions, new insightsNumerous public tasks are not, or no longer, performed exclusively

by national government institutions. Rather, these tasks are increasingly

being taken over by a series of private, semi-private, or privatised

organisations. Political decision-making does not only take place in

the national political arenas, but also at the European level and in

numerous international arenas, in horizontal networks of social partners

and at the headquarters of large companies and social institutions. So if

you want to study the public domain and classic questions concerning

the organisation of strong societies, you can no longer confine yourself

to the study of government institutions. Indeed, you must focus on

public organisations in the broadest sense of the word.

Late modern or post-modern society not only involves a great diversity

of actors and networks in the public domain, but there is also a large

degree of socio-cultural pluralism. Organisations construct the meaning

of social developments, the public interest, and their own role in it.

The study of governance issues therefore does not only require a

multi-level and multi-actor perspective, but also pays attention to

issues and processes of sense-making in and between organisations.

The programme takes these developments seriously and focuses on

the interaction between social changes and the performance of public

organisations in tackling social issues. These may be government

institutions, but also independent governing bodies, corporations,

public enterprises, educational and care institutions, civil society

associations, and private companies. This programme therefore

combines the classic questions of public administration with new

insights from organizational science.

Then the Master’s programme Public Administration and Organizational

Science is the right choice for you. During this Master’s programme,

you can prepare for a PhD programme but you can also choose to

Curriculum of the programmeThe programme takes two years to complete at 60 ECTS per year.

A two-year programme is necessary in order to meet the requirements

of the programme, theoretical competence and methodological expertise

leading up to a research project, and a Master’s thesis that complies

with the standards of an international publication.

The programme includes three core course components. Firstly, there

are course components for the core theoretical themes in the fields of

public administration and organizational science. Secondly, there are

course components for advanced methodological study in the fields

of philosophy of science, research ethics, and methods of research.

Academic staffThe programme was jointly developed by the Utrecht University School

of Governance, the Tilburg School of Politics and Public Administration

(TSPPA) and the Department of Public Administration of Erasmus

University Rotterdam. These institutions are among the best public

administration and organizational science research groups in the

Netherlands. They guarantee to cover the state-of-the-art knowledge

of central issues in modern public administration and organizational

science, and introduce students directly and thoroughly to the most

prominent researchers in these areas.

Selection procedureAn Admissions Committee will assess candidates on the basis of a

portfolio submitted by the candidates. The portfolio must contain proof

of their knowledge and skills in public administration and organizational

science, of research methods including research projects completed

(please note: demonstrating affinity with and proven quality in the field

of research skills), and relevant extra-curricular experience (e.g., trainee/

work experience with a research agency, experience with project

management). Besides, the Admissions Committee will require a letter

of motivation written by the candidate, which must include details of a

research proposal that the candidate would like to specify in more detail

on admission. An intake interview is part of the selection procedure

for students living in the Netherlands. Suitable candidates holding a

Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Organizational Science of

Utrecht University and/or a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration

of Tilburg University and/or of Erasmus University Rotterdam will be

given precedence.

Late entry on the grounds of affiliated degreesCandidates holding a one-year Master’s degree in public administration

or in a related discipline (general social sciences, business administra-

tion, policy studies, communication science, cultural anthropology,

organizational science, human resource management, social sciences,

sociology, political science) are eligible for exemption from those com-

ponents of the Research Master’s programme that show substantial

overlap with the academic Master’s programme completed previously.

This will be assessed by the Admissions Committee.

The programme directors will see to a study plan that allows candidates

to enter the coursework of the Master’s programme in the best possible

way and thus prevent unnecessary prolongation of the course.

the Remuneration Division. At approximately the same time, somebody pointed this Master’s Programme out to me. I was not
