Voorwoord ‘Topless 38’ – januari 2014

De start van het nieuwe (reeds ons 16de

club-) jaar is

wederom gegeven. We gaan opnieuw een interessant jaar

tegemoet met reizen naar Corsica (april) & Friesland,

Nederland (Pinksterweekend) tegemoet. Daarnaast zullen

we onze 15de

inschrijvingsformulier.

Topless Magazine is bijna

prochaine rencontre MMRC !

Ronald Van Kelst, Voorzitter MMRC

Deep in the Mazda Basement

By TJ Keon | October 25, 2013

Source : http://www.autobytel.com/mazda/news/deep-in-the-mazda-basement-120260/

The Mazda Basement

Burried deep benath the bowels of Mazda's R&D headquarters in Irvine, CA lies a treasure trove of Zoom-Zoom goodies. Once inside the basement, guests are treated to an intimate encounter with everything from LeMans winning endurance racecars like the legendary 787, to a host of rotary powered RX-7 sports cars of both the racetrack and road-going variety. There are also a few scale models from years past; not to mention a whole lot of Miatas. The Mazda Miata featured in the foreground is the Miata Speedster showcar, and is eaisly distinguished by a shorter windshield as well as early Fast and the Furious-inspired bodywork. (Photo 1)

Since this is a working research and development office, it was no surprise to see a pallet of industrail clay sitting at the far end of the Mazda dream garage meant for the modelers upstairs. However, the scale Miata in various states of refinement sitting on top was quite the easter egg, giving a deeper look into the steps the sculptor will take to bring their vision to a three dimensional reality. (Photo 2)

Speaking of scale models, tucked away in the corner, hidden behind a stack of RX-7

rims and tires were a few more finished versions of Mazda's scale proposals. Items like a Mazda6 wagon and a few scaled-down multi-people movers gave a glimpse into what might have been for the manufacturer from Hiroshima. Note the Furai at the bottom, with the full size version going up in flames, this could be the only one in the world. (Photo 3)

Page 9: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

Remember the Mazdaspeed Protoge? Shortly after Mazda realeased the first affordable four door compact with an MP3 player, they decided to turn up the boost with a turbocharged version from the factory. This one with its Racing Hart rims and engine bay dress up kit looks like it might have seen SEMA duty in its earlier days. (Photo 4)

What you see here is the original Miata that Mazda pulled the covers off of at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, oficially introducing the world to the future of Japanese-built classic British-style lightweight sports cars. (Photo 5)

The RX-7 has been considered one of the last great Japanese sportscars, ever since they stopped coming to the U.S. The classic rotary experimental formula made up of a turbocharged two rotor motor up front sending power straight to the rear wheels packaged inside a sleek aerodynamic shell is a hit no matter what generation. Down in the Basement you will find both FC and FD RX-7s as well as a bright orange pace car and a very limited production left hand drive gunmetal Spirit R. (Photo 6)

Page 10: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

It is truly a pity that Mazda never saw fit to bring the Miata Coupe to market. The sleek lines formed by the fixed roof translate well with the traditional roadster body, but then what would a Miata be without wind in your face and bugs in your teeth? (Photo 7)

As unassuming as this little Miata racer looks, it is actually a very impartant piece of the MX-5's timeline. That's because the diminutive white Mazda seen here was the first one ever outfitted to go racing. It makes you wonder if they knew what was going to come when they finished bolting in that roll cage. After all, more Mazdas are road raced than any other car, and alot of that can be attributed to #6. (Photo 8)

Page 11: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

Miatas galore! Every generation, every iteration and even a few one-off show cars can be found housed inside the Mazda R&D Basement. (Photo 9)

If rarity is something that excites you then this trio of classic Mazdas will not disapoint. Starting with the right hand drive Eunos Cosmo (not even a Mazda), this luxury coupe from the 1990s is most notable for its powerplant, an utra rare and highly sought after twin turbocharged three rotor dubbed the 20B. The 1976 Mazda GLC was optioned with every box checked on the order form in 1976 and today the bright yellow hatchback shows only 7500 miles on the odometer. However, the Cosmo on the end is the car that ushered in the era of lightweight rotary powered sports cars from Japan back in 1967. (Photo 10)

Page 12: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

The first thing you see after descending the sterilized white staircase leading down to the Basement is the gorgeous Mazda RX-7 GTO, wearing the eye catching ARTNATURE blue and yellow livery. The RX-7 GTO ran in the 1994 24 Hours of LeMans. (Photo 11)

To some, the word "Mazda" means racing, and the 787 and 757 endurance racers are no exception. Did you know that Mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer to take home the overall win at the coveted 24 Hours of LeMans? (Photo 12)

12

Page 13: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

Even more racecars, this time based on the road going RX-7. In their day, these machines tore up the tracks in the IMSA competition. These days the rotary powered racers save their strength for vintage motorsport events as well as spending some time doing car show duty. (Photo 13)

Here you can see the sister car to the LeMans-winning orage and green 787/B Group C sports car, this time wearing the more traditional blue and white Mazda livery, sitting on blocks. Beside it sits a sleek looking RX-792P, whose name comes from the RX-7 road car, the 1992 season in which it raced, and the fact that it is a prototype competing in the IMSA GTP competition. Hiding behind the blue pole an MXR-01 pokes its nose out, the MX did not experience the same success as the 787 which ran the year before. Unlike previous rotary powered prototypes, this one was powered by a V10. (Photo 14)

Mazda was a presence on the prototpye scene with their mighty Group C competitors, long before the success of other Japanese automakers in the 1990s. It was cars like the FA RX-7 and RX-3 Savanna that the brand from Japan used to cut their teeth in early grassroots wheel-to-wheel competition. (Photo 15)

Multi National Drive to Venice

Having agreed with Amelia & Alan Robertson to join the Mazda Miata Roadster Club of Belgium on their drive to

Venice we let other members know of our plans, we then had other members showing an interest. As the starting point

was Saltzburg and we intended to make the trip with several stops to meet up with the main group I asked European

Driving Tours (EDT) to assist us in booking hotels and planning a route to Salzburg where we would meet up with

the others for the drive to Venice. This account of our motoring holiday is not intended as a recommendation

for EDT but am however thankful for their assistance and for sharing their experience with us as the routes

and hotels were all superb and we enjoyed the discount afforded to Club Members.

SUNDAY 7th

JULY

We did not fancy driving in the Monday morning traffic on either the M25 or the M20, so we booked into a hotel

at Maidstone for the night so that we were close to where we had arranged to meet others that were traveling with

us but travelling on Monday. However on leaving their home in Northampton, I managed to lead them straight into

the local supermarket car park instead of joining the M1, but then it would not have been a true MX5 drive without

a u turn although I have never done one at the start before.

MONDAY 8th

JULY

We enjoyed a leisurely start to the day in bright sunshine as we waited to meet Sally & Brian Winter, Liz Wallace &

Rod Calvert, Sharon & Tony Wright plus Jo and Keith Visser as they arrived at the service station at junction 8 on the

M20. Once everyone had refreshed and was ready we set off to meet up with Sandy Duncan & Bill Pearson at the

Eurotunnel as planned in time to catch our 11.50 train. In no time at all we were in France heading for our first stop

Page 15: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

at “Vinny Ridge” the Canadian memorial site to those that lost their lives in the Great War of 1916 – 1918 which was

a very moving experience and quite an eye opener as the tour explained some of the conditions at the time. Our next

stage of our journey which we were all beginning to settle into took us to “Le Manour Du Capitaine” near to Mons in

Belgium where our first hotel was a beautiful converted Brewery. A very quick change and a short walk for most if not

myself and we were in the village of Feluy where we all enjoyed a fantastic meal cooked and served by a single man

who did all he could to make us feel welcome.

TUESDAY 9th

JULY

The sun was so bright that it woke us up early, however the facilities in our apartment were so

good it was a pleasure to have the chance to appreciate them before we set off. On setting off there was

a bit of confusion over the bill which was soon sorted out when they realised that EDT had already paid for the

accommodation and so after visiting the local shop for provisions we set off on our route to Fussen in Germany. It was

a long journey and very hot with what seemed like road works on every stretch of road we used with lots of diversions

that confused the preset sat navs that EDT had provided, however between the sat navs and the maps which were also

provided we managed to complete the route experiencing both Autobahns and some bendy roads. Once at our hotel we

were informed that EDT had arranged a complimentary mini bar as a way to apologies for the confusion regarding

the bill at the previous hotel which was very welcome on such a hot day as was the swimming pool that was made

good use of by most. In the evening we ventured out into the town and enjoyed meals at various restaurants as

there were plenty to choose from although some were short of outside seating.

WEDNESDAY 10th

JULY

It being my birthday I was woken early with the first text coming through to congratulate me on my big “O” at 01.20

hrs but then my Son always did have a weird sense of humour. Other best wishes arrived from 06.00 hrs including

cards from fellow travellers. We set off from the hotel at 09.15 with the sun promising to be as hot as is was the

previous day. In a very short period of time we found ourselves in very heavy traffic and lots of roadworks on the

Autobahn, on stopping for a pit stop Lucie discovered that she had left her mobile phone in the hotel reception at

Fussion. However with the help of Amelia and Alan and lots of phone calls arrangements were made to have the sim

card from my phone sent back to our home as to send the phone would have cost more than it was worth. Our first

destination for the day was to visit Schloss Neuschwanstein known as the inspiration for the “Disney Castle”.in

Florida. Having visited there previously we did not join those that took the Castle tour, instead we enjoyed the

sunshine having a drink and cake where we met an American Air force man that was stationed in Cambridgeshire

back in the UK. He had a wicked sense of humour and we enjoyed some lively banter with him and some very

interesting discussion regarding world travel which he had obviously done lots of, he certainly helped to make my

birthday. We only had a short drive from the castle to our hotel which had a very nice patio area where we all enjoyed

a drink and snacks together before taking the short walk into town to have our meal where we were later joined for

drinks by Jo, Keith, Sandy & Bill which was a nice way to finish off my 70th birthday.

THURSDAY 11th

July

For the first time since leaving home we woke up to find the weather overcast however by the time we were ready to set

off for Saltzburg the sun was already breaking through. Unfortunately our journey was hindered by heavy haulage

vehicles and more road repairs that had traffic lights that seemed to take forever to change. Eventually we finally got

moving and being out front I reached the speed limit of 100km whilst overtaking and pulled back into the nearside

lane, however one of our group was still catching up and was pulled over by the Police using a hand held radar gun

and fined 25 euros for speeding. Although a little later than planned we arrived at our destination “The Eagles Nest”

which is the house on the top of a mountain that Boreman built for Hitler’s birthday in 1938 using slave labour. The

building is certainly an engineering feat but cost so many lives and Hitler only visited the place a few times. From

there it was a short drive into Saltzburg and our hotel which was well placed in the heart of the city and where were we

had booked in for two nights so that we could all enjoy a driving free day to explore the city before meeting up with the

rest of the members booked on the trip to Venice.

FRIDAY 12th July

I had been trying to delete roaming on my mobile whilst having a drink the night before and must have unintentionally

set the alarm as it woke us up at 05.30, and yes I did get told off. However I was soon forgiven when we got to the

bridge over the river and Alan and I produced our padlocks which we had engraved before leaving home showing our

wedding dates. Alan & Amelia followed by us secured them to the bridge and tossed the keys into the river making a

romantic wish which is customary in Salzburg. In the evening some of the group went to a Mozart concert whilst the

rest of us found a pleasant restaurant and enjoyed a nice meal that was a fitting end to a great day spent sightseeing in

a fantastic city in glorious weather.

Page 17: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

SATURDAY 13th

July

Following breakfast we loaded the cars to take the short drive to Bad Reichenhall where we met up with members of

the Mazda Miata Roadster Club of Belgium to start the next stage of our holiday on the drive to Venice. The weather

was still very good and tops had stayed down, the hotel looked out onto a mountain where large numbers of people

were jumping from the top and paragliding down and landing in the meadow next to our patio. At 4pm all 28 cars that

were on the tour gathered at the local historic salt mine for a group photograph, there was also one convertible Volvo,

as an American couple that had flown over to join the tour had hired as they had been unsuccessful in finding a MX-5

to hire, much to their disappointment. Apparently in 1994 when they owned a Ford Mustang of 1963 vintage they saw

a Miata in the showroom and part exchanged the Mustang and they have owned the Miata ever since. Lucie took

advantage of the time to take the salt mine tour which on hearing it involved some 300 steps I declined and enjoyed

meeting all the other owners and letting the Americans have their photograph taken in our car. The evening was spent

meeting old friends and making new ones over dinner and a few drinks as it was arranged for all the evening meals

between this stop and Venice to be taken as a group.

SUNDAY 14th

July

There was no rush to finish breakfast or load up the cars as the roads were closed whilst the local Triathlon was being

held which involved, hang gliding off the mountain,(hence all the practice the previous day) swimming and then a

road cycle race. Our planned route from our hotel to our next stop was 200 miles and we had planned to have a mud

bath on route to our next hotel in Reutte. However it being so hot and the traffic was very heavy with various detours

and long delays we rescheduled and enjoyed a long lunch break and a variety of beauty spots. The evening meal was

where many stories of the day’s journey were exchanged between members with everyone having a different tale to tell

about the road.

MONDAY 15th

July

We made an earlier start as we wanted to be sure that we covered all of the days drive from Reutte to Bormio taking in

Timmelsjoch Pass which was very green and scenic with a fantastic road with long sweeping bends. It is sometimes

referred to as the secret pass as it is little used compared to the much easier and lower Brenner Pass. We then made

our way to Resia Roschen to see the manmade lake that engulfed a church which still has its tower showing out of the

water which is all part of a much larger tourist area involving all outdoor leisure activities including water sports. Our

next destination was a drive up the Stelvio Pass which is the highest pass in Italy and we drove all 58 hairpin bends

with what seemed like every cyclist, motor cyclist and mobile home in Italy who all had the same idea, we even

encountered the local bus on one of the bends. Using all of my driving skill and the engine plus gear box to the full, I

still managed to give Lucie a white knuckle ride and myself the thrill of a drive that will always be remembered, it is

difficult to find the right words to describe just how exciting it all was and how fantastic the views were at every

corner. On reaching our hotel in Bormio we were pleasantly surprised to find it also had a swimming pool which was

the perfect ending to a spectacular day, and we still had the evening meal to look forward to.

TUESDAY 16th

July

Today there was a choice of routes with some members planning to attempt all, others doing the direct route to our

next destination at Lake Como using the ferry to see more along the lake. Others like us chose to complete the Albula

Pass, unfortunately when we arrived at the entrance to the pass we learnt that the authorities had chosen that day to

resurface the road and therefore is was closed. We retraced our route for some distance and then did the Julier Pass

which was a dead end so again we had to retrace our route to get back on the road to Como, this had been the hottest

day so far with a temperature of 32 being recorded. Todays route was made all the more interesting as we met various

makes of classic cars on the road including Porsche, MG, Mustang, Healy, Escorts and a MX-5 Mk1 towing a

caravan which unfortunately I was not able to get a photograph of. The only problem we encountered as did many

others was that our sat navs would not recognise our hotel location and we had quite a problem finding it.

WEDNESDAY 17th

July

The journey to Venice is nearing its end and as we left our hotel the sun was hiding behind some low clouds however

as the first part of our route involved some long tunnels it didn’t bother us. Some of the members were taking the short

route to take advantage of the swimming pool that was available at our next hotel in Iseo. As we wanted to make the

most or our day and see as much of Italy as we could we decided to follow the route as supplied driving along the edge

of Lake Como then onto the San Marco Pass and Lake Endine all of which were well worth experiencing and the sun

had come out so that we saw it all at its best. On the road up the pass which had photo opportunities round every bend

there were signs warning of the danger of rock falls and some evidence of fallen rocks on the road, but there is really

not much one can do other than be careful. Unfortunately a rock slide occurred just as we were passing and there was

a loud bang as a rock the size of small football hit the near side of the car just behind the door causing damage.

Fortunately we were not hurt and shortly reached Lake Garda where we stopped to enjoy ice creams and get over the

shock of the incident before continuing onto our hotel and taking full advantage of the swimming pool. As the hotel

did not have a restaurant arrangements had been made for us to travel to a restaurant by bus so that we could all enjoy

another meal together.

THURSDAY 18th

July

We decided to take a short cut today and set the sat nav to cut across the main route, however although we were soon

out of the Lake Iseo area our route took us through some very interesting industrial areas and out into unspoilt

countryside. The sat navs were having difficulty finding roads and at one point took us into a small hamlet which was

a dead end much to the amusement of the locals enjoying a morning coffee in the local café, using both the sat nav

and Lucie’s map reading we eventually got back on route which took us though some great scenery and alongside a

dam. Our route from here took us along the edge of Lake Garda until we reached the main autostrada which we

travelled along for the last 100 miles at reasonable speeds none stop to our next hotel in San Dona di Piave. Our

evening meal was punctuated with tales of routes that took some high up into the mountains and others that went

Page 19: .BHB[JOF +BO 'FCP 1 Cover rally Salzburg Venice 07 / 2013 P 2 Inhoud - Contenu P 3 Voorwoord - Préface P 4 - 6 Even Voorstellen : Koen & Anja

swimming in two lakes on route, our American friend Felix who had completed the whole route in the Volvo with a

sticker on the side saying “Miata Support Vehicle” thanked everyone for being so friendly and accepting the Volvo

which he referred to as the “Mule” he went on to say that the hood took over a minute and a half to open or close and

he was glad that the weather had stayed dry during the trip. He then asked all the ladies from the UK to stand up and

told them that he would love to have a calendar with one of them on each month draped over a MX-5, an interesting

thought that the National Committee might want to consider!! Felix gave everyone a pin badge from the Miata Club of

America and explained that they hold a rally which they call “Miata Safari” every five years and the next one is to be

held in Montidiago in 2015 and invited us all to attend. He suggested that with the close working relationship the have

with Mazda of America he thought they could get cars available for any one visiting, Lucie and I have it on our to do

list although we are not banking on Mazda providing a MX-5 and expect to have to hire, if we do it is more likely to be

a Cadillac than a Volvo. Anyone interested in joining us please get in touch and we will keep you in the loop as we get

more information on what could be a trip of a lifetime. I gave Felix a copy of the latest STHT which really bowled him

over as he was astonished at the content and quality of the club magazine and said that he will be joining our owners

club so that he can have regular copies of the magazine and again was delighted that it came as part of the annual

subs as he was expecting to pay extra for it. Finally Toby our tour representative who had accompanied us at every

hotel although he had kept a low profile on the route in his “Skoda” passed on information of the planned trip into

Venice the next day by train that was to be followed by a walking tour of the Sights.

FRIDAY 19th

July

Not wanting to hold everyone up on the walk to the

station or on the tour I declined to go into Venice as I had

been twice in the past and remembered how hot and crowed it was, so

Lucie went with the group and I spent a lazy day in the local cafes and did a bit of

people watching as I had failed to find a place to hire a Vespa for the day. It was amusing to

watch the Saga Crocodile being lead out of the hotel towards the station by Toby and later

learnt that it was as hot as I thought it would be and that the price of a Gondola ride was prohibitive. Everyone seemed

to have enjoyed it although I suspected that a few would have rather spent the day as I did. The evening had everyone

saying farewells with some going to bed early as they had early rises and long journeys the next day to get back home,

however some of us managed to walk into town where the shops were open until 11pm. Between the shops and the

even later bar my wallet wished I had also gone to bed early but it was a great end to a great trip with everyone

agreeing that Kathleen and Ronald with a little help from Toby had produced a good holiday and a chance to enjoy

our cars to the full in great company.

SATURDAY 20th

July

Due to our rather late night and the fact that we were not in any hurry to get away as we only had a

short drive to our next stop as we with Amelia and Alan had planned another tour on the way home.

We missed a lot of the early people leaving, some of which were catching the Monorail back to the

channel as they needed to get back home for work on Monday. With almost everyone gone Amelia

and Alan along with us took the road to Brescia to visit the Mille Miglia Museum, a superb

museum that captures all the atmosphere of the historic races, beautifully laid out in a former

Monastery with a very pleasant tavern for lunch. What a surprise it was to arrive and find about

10 Italians of Polish decent all dressed in Kilts with bagpipes playing as they prepared to set off

on vintage motorcycles to Verona on what we learnt was an annual event. It was quite a

sight seeing all these people in Kilts leaving the car park, although a couple had to have a

push to get going they all rode off as we lined our cars up to get a photograph of

them in front of a picture of Sir Sterling Moss before we set of for the short drive to

our hotel.

SUNDAY 21st July

We had a late start after breakfast and took a direct route to Cernobbio on the

shores of Lake Como where we were delighted to find our hotel far exceeded our

expectations with a beautiful garden where we sat and enjoyed a drink

before taking the short walk down to the lake. We learnt that there was to be a

local festival on the edge of the lake in the evening so we arranged to have a meal

overlooking the lake before spending the rest of the evening enjoying watching the

locals dancing in the square and having family picnics.

MONDAY 22nd

July

It was rather overcast this morning which was welcomed as we faced a 300 mile drive today to our next stop at

Mulhouse, however by the time we had breakfast and set off the sun was out again and a usual tops were down. I am

not sure if can recapture todays drive in words as if any of you have ever experienced a spirited drive on the Stelvio or

Timmelsjoch Passes I can only describe the Furka Pass which was used for the famous driving scene in the film

Goldfinger and voted as one of the top ten drives, as fantastic. Next to come was the Susten Pass which really lets you

use the car to its full potential not to mention your own skill and your cars brakes all of which made for a great days

drive, before joining the Autostrader for the last section of the route to Mulhouse and our town centre hotel.

TUESDAY 23rd

July

The plan for today was to spend time visiting the Schlumpf Auto Museum and then take a drive to the summit of the

Ballon D’ Alsace to enjoy further driving passes and splendid views from the top, however we all got so engrossed in

the museum that we ran out of time and abandoned the drive in favour of a walk round the town and finding a place to

eat in the evening. The Schlumpf Museum was so interesting that after some 5 hours I had to remind Lucie of the time

and the fact that I needed both refreshments and a rest, if you ever get the chance to visit this area I strongly

recommend you to take time out to visit the museum as it really is breath taking, there is also a tram museum which we

were advised is of the same standard which we will certainly view next time we are in the area.

WEDNESDAY 24th July

For the first time it was actually raining hard as we set off from our hotel with tops up and the

air con on as it was still very hot with 32 degrees being recorded at 10.30 in the

morning. Our route avoided all motorways and we covered some 300 miles along roads

with stunning views and long winding bends and 10 mile long straights that let us

stretch the cars legs. The rain soon stopped and we had lunch at Pont a Mousson

where we enjoyed a walk along the river bank, our next stop was at the American

WW1 Memorial which was fitting memorial to the thousands of soldiers that lost their

lives at the Battle Staint Mihiel at Butte de Montsec. It was another great day in spite

of the rain which had left the cars speckled and covered in dust so at the

next fuel stop we took the opportunity to use the car wash facilities before

reaching our hotel.

THURSDAY 25th

July

As it was our last day in France we had not intended to do very much and enjoy an easy day, however as the “Circuit

of Reims-Gueux” was close by we decided to make a visit. A member of the “Friends of Gueux Circuit” was on site

and soon introduced himself to Lucie who in turn soon explained that we were hoping to get a photo of the cars on the

site. He explained to us that many of the Advertisements have been restored with the help of the companies that are

still in existence and it is their long term aim to open the circuit again, we were shown original drawings that had been

uncovered during restoration of the pits and where best to park our cars to get the best photographs, this was a very

fitting end to our motoring holiday and we left after being presented with a car sticker as a memento. We then took a

drive to Suippes where we visited “Marne 14-18” which is a Centre that offers an interactive account of the Great War

using original photos and media coverage, a truly moving experience for us all. We had refreshments in a small café

where the owner had a collection of over 2500 Regimental Cap Badges from all over the world, he was obviously very

proud of them being a veteran himself and showed us photos of himself

in uniform at remembrance parades. On route back to our hotel we

stopped off to refuel and visit the local hypermarket, not that we had

room for wine or beer having been away for almost three weeks by the

time we get home. Our hotel had a pool which was appreciated as it

had again been a hot day, we had our meal in the hotel and generally

got ready to travel back to England the next day.

FRIDAY 26th

July

Following a tremendous thunderstorm during the night we packed the cars and set off in heavy rain and tops up, as we

had quite a bit of motorway driving ahead of us we were happy to have the tops up as there was a lot of spray. On

reaching the exit toll we lowered the tops which remained that way until we reached the Eurotunnel, once back in

England we drove to our next hotel in Whitstable which we had pre booked not wanting to face the M25 on a Friday

evening. The weather was hot and sunny and we had a drink on the beach before finding a nice restaurant for our last

meal together where we all agreed that the holiday had been a success. Following our meal we returned to the beach

for coffee and ice cream where we met a couple from the midlands that had connections with Northampton who were

very interested in out tales of our holiday and shared some very interesting ideas for future travels.

SATURDAY 27th

July

Having said all our goodbyes the night before, Amelia and Alan were already gone when we

surfaced to load the car for the last time, we took a route for home via Oxford so that we

could visit our youngest Grandson Luke who had been in hospital the whole time we were

away and I am pleased to say that although as I write this he is still undergoing

chemotherapy at the age of two he is making progress and now back home, and Lucie and I

would like to thank everyone that has expressed good wishes for Luke. It was a great

motoring holiday and I can say with confidence that a good time was had by all, with a few

fellow travellers saying that they will definitely go back to spend more time in the lakes

area of Italy. No one was put off European Travelling and in the future and I am sure that

we shall meet most of them again on a future motoring holiday if not on the 2014 Drive to

Monty Carlo of which details can be found on European Driving Tours website

www.europeandrivingtours.co.uk places are still available if you feel you would like to join

us in celebrating the 25 years of the car and 20 years of the club.

Daguitstap naar de …

Essen Motorshow beurs

in Duitsland

Mc Donalds tegen in Duitsland waar we onze honger konden stillen…

Klokslag 21u uur waren we terug thuis….

Het bezoek van 2013 was geslaagd en volgend

jaar gaan we natuurlijk weer!

tribute to Paul Walker.

rondreden. Thanks to Paul Walker is Tuning Still Alive.

Hommage à Paul Walker: 600 voitures rassemblées

Source : http://www.lacapitale.be/876636/article/regions/bruxelles/actualite/2013-12-08/hommage-a-paul-walker-600-voitures-rassemblees

National Rally 2013 Sandringham (MX-5 Owners UK) - 28-29 september 2013

Tijdens het weekend van 28 &

29 september 2013 vond

opnieuw de ‘National Rally’

plaats in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

In 2012 waren we met drie

auto’s vanuit België (Bruno De

Leeuw met zijn pa, Ludo Vander

Vliet met Petra & mezelf met

Kathleen).

Andere gasten waren Philip & Vanessa, Rolf Hass, Guy Bosschaerts &

Henk Vercammen.
