CLUB SNAPSHOTS

FARIS GETS HIS 10THBethlehem Steel FC forward Faris hit a big milestone in his young career last weekend. The 19-year-old scored his 10th goal all-time for Steel FC in the club’s last match at Tampa Bay Rowdies (September 21). Faris was able to bag three goals in his first campaign for the Steel in 2018 and has notched a team-leading seven more tallies this season. With five matches remaining in 2019, he’ll look to add more to his total.

JAMES CHAMBERS HAVING PERSONAL-BEST SEASONMidfielder and team captain James Chambers is having one of his best seasons with the Steel. The 32-year-old Irishman has scored five goals and provided four assists this year, being involved in a total of nine goals in 2019. His five tallies tie his high marks from the 2017 and 2018 seasons, while his four helpers tie his 2016 season-end production as the most in his Steel FC career. With five games left, Chambers will look to break those marks, while leading a push for the playoffs.

PICAZO NOTCHES FIRSTPhiladelphia Union Academy midfielder Axel Picazo notched his first goal for Steel FC in the club’s 5-2 home win over Loudoun United FC (September 18). Picazo scored the fifth of the night on a penalty kick that he drew. Picazo dribbled through multiple defenders before being taken down in the box and converting the shot for his first tally.

PREVIOUS MEETINGBethlehem Steel FC and Memphis 901 FC last met on March 24 at Talen Energy Stadium for the inaugural meeting between the two sides. The match ended in a 1-0 loss for the Steel in what would prove to be a tough match for the hosts. Rashawn Dally became the only man on the score sheet with a 58th-minute goal that beat Philadelphia Union goal-keeper Matt Freese. Steel FC held most of the possession throughout the match (60.4% - 39.6%), but Memphis took the result.

STEEL FC LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACKBethlehem Steel FC (8-15-6) travels to take on expansion side Memphis 901 FC (8-14-7) at AutoZone Park this Saturday, September 28. The Steel will look to get back on track in the 2019 USL Championship Play-offs hunt following a 6-1 road loss at the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Memphis has been on a tear in their chase for a playoff spot, winning four of their last six matches and climbing in the standings to 12th place. With only one point separating the Steel (13th) and 901 FC (12th), this is an important match for both sides.

On how his team responds after a bad loss last weekend . . .

I think it’s important to understand that we’ve gone to most of our games without a full 18 this year, it was three games in seven days, so I said to the players at halftime that that’s about the worst beating you’re ever going to take. Tampa [Bay Rowdies] was on that night on top of it, so I thought it was a great learning exercise to have to pick your head up and walk out of that locker room. I told them that I wasn’t making any subs, we’re going back out and we’re going to reapply ourselves to the best our abilities with whatever energy you have left and then we’ll make subs. This is an experience that we have to learn from collectively as a staff and players. I thought the guys responded well in the second half. Now we need to take that lesson, but also on a week’s rest now and a little fresher going into Memphis, and see what we can get out of it. It’s important that we remain focused on the one thing we’ve been charged with this year, which is making sure that these guys get some quality development in tough environments.

On facing off against familiar faces on Memphis 901 FC . . .

These guys will know a lot about us and some of our players. It’s always helpful to know your opponents and understand some of their tendencies, but the reality is that this is about us and execut-ing the game plan that’s been laid out for us, the style of play. I’m really happy for those guys that they’re in a good environment, stand alone, they can kind of take the handcuffs off and get after it. I know, certainly for a goalscorer, that has to be freeing and Brandon [Allen] is moving well in the box and taking his chances. Adam [Najem], for my money, is one of the best 10s at the USL Championship level right now, so it’s great to see those guys doing well.
