MEN’S SOCCERGustavus Adolphus vs. Pacific Lutheran UniversitySeptember 7, 2009, 12:30 p.m.

Welcome to the Gustavus Soccer Field on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College for today’s

important non-conference match-up between your Golden Gusties and the Lutes from Pacific

Lutheran University. Gustavus enters the match with a record of 1-0-1 overall, while Pacific

Lutheran enters with a mark of 1-1-0 overall

Just when it seemed like the Gustavus men’s soccer team was going to register a hard-fought

1-0 win over visiting Whitworth University on Saturday, the Pirates’ Kekoa Mountcastle scored

with just over a minute remaining in regulation play to tie the score at 1-1. The two teams

played scoreless soccer through two 10 minute overtimes and the result was a 1-1 tie. The

Gustavus goal was scored by Justin Eglseder in the 62nd minute with an assist from Fraser

Horton. The game was very evenly played statistically as Whitworth outshot Gustavus 9-8,

while the Gusties held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gustavus goalkeeper Luke Strom

allowed one goal and made three saves, while Whitworth goalkeeper Brian Sherpe allowed one

goal and made four saves.

Pacific Lutheran rallied for an exciting 3-2 win in overtime against St. Thomas on the

Gustavus field on Saturday afternoon. The Lutes found themselves in a 2-0 when the Tommies

scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the match. Mohamed Bouzakraft pulled Pacific

Lutheran to within one at 2-1 when he scored at the 38:17 mark. The Lutes tied the score

at 2-2 when Daniele Zaccagnini scored in the 62nd minute. Regulation play ended with the

score tied at 2-2. The Lutes won the game in overtime when Andy Hyre score at the 96:30

mark. Brian Kostol was the winning goalkeeper for Pacific Lutheran as he made two saves and

allowed two goals.

The Gusties will continue non-conference play next weekend with a match at Central College

in Pella, Iowa on Saturday at 10:30 am followed by a match at Simpson College in Indianola,

Iowa on Sunday, at 4:00 pm. The Gusties will open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic

Conference play against defending champion Carleton on Wednesday, Sept 16 in Northfield.

Quick Facts• This will be the third meeting between the Gusties and Lutes on the soccer pitch with

Gustavus leading the all-time series with a mark of 2-0-0. The Gusties claimed a hard-fought 1-0

win at Pacific Lutheran last August 29.

• The Lutes have started their season with two very exciting matches both of which have

ended in overtime. PLU opened its season last Thursday with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to

UC-Santa Cruz in two overtimes and then rallied to claim a 3-2 win in one overtime against

St. Thomas here on the Gustavus Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.

• Pacific Lutheran is a member of the Northwest Conference. The Gusties are 5-3-2 all-time

against teams from the NWC including a 2-0-0 record against PLU, a 2-0-1 mark against Puget

Sound, a 1-2-1 against Whitworth, and a 0-1-0 mark against Linfield.
