The59-year-old Caucasianladywhocame tomy officethatday in Clearwater, Florida, hadbeen seenby severalallopaths andhadalso been caredfor bya chiropractorwhodiduppercervicalworkexclusively. She complainedofpaininthe legs, whichwouldcauseher tocryoutperiodically, but notconsistently when shewalkedalmostas ifthe pains were moreimaginedthanreal.

WesatdownandI tookher history.AsI did, shetoldmethatshewasbasicallya nightpersonwholikedto watch

oldmovies.Herdietwasnotgoodandsheadmittedthatshetendedto eat cookiesand drinkginger aleas shewatchedher movies, but lately, she saidthe painwasbecoming more problematic. She wasreferredtome byanother patient.

Theladywas about 35poundsoverweight andclearlyhadsomehypochondriacaltendencies. Her examinationwas not particularly remarkable withmost neurologicaland orthopedic signs being non-productive. Lungssoundedclear andher abdomenwas softwith nomassesandno abnormalsounds. She didhave somecomplaintsof pain onchest compressionandshe had that initialcomplaint.I finallydecided toradiograph herlow backandher thoracic cage.

Herfilms showedgeneralized osteopenia, but what hitmelike asledge hammer werethe17 ribfractures, whichwhileproductiveofsome painuponcompression, didnotseem to reallyhurt herwhenshe engaged in normalactivities. Some ofthe fracturesites seemedtohave someclearevidenceof boneloss.

Clinicallaboratory studiesshoweda markedincreaseinAlkalinePhosphataseand I begantothink seriouslyaboutplasma cell myeloma (sometimes called multiplemyeloma),but when I didthe proteinelectrophoresis, Ididnotget thetypicalspike. Still, thiswasa case that

appearedtobe beyondmesoI referredheronceagaintoher allopathwith a tentative diagnosis of plasma cellmyeloma, whichatthattimehad a verypoorprognosis.

Shewas hospitalized andspent justunder a monththerewithfurthertesting includinga bonemarrowbiopsy. Theconclusionwas malignancy of undeterminedorigin, butnotplasma cellmyeloma. At thispoint thislady checkedherselfoutofthehospitalandreturnedtomyoffice.Shesaid,Iwantyoutotreatme.Theydontknowwhatis wrongwith

    meandI certainlyamnotgettinganybetter!Howmanyofyouhaveheardthis inyourcareersasphysicians?

IagreedthatI wouldtrytohelpherwithherpain, butsheneededto understand that I couldnot treat hersystemiccondition(it wasnotlegal in Florida). We beganwith adiet andsomenutritionalsupplements andmild spinalmanipulation.Yes,I knowabouttherib fracturesand I didnot adjust her inthe thoracicspine of course, but didadjustthelowback.I askedto seeherthreetimesduringthe first two weeksand then tapered offbecause sheseemed, surprisingly, to beimproving.Clearly, she wasahappier womanandwas experiencingless pain.

Aftera month,I decidedto haveanotherlook atthoseribsandwasastounded whenI foundthat allof thefracturesitesweredemonstratingcallusformation!I toldherwhatI hadfound andshesaidshehad been goingto a prayergroupthathadanointedherand thatGodhad healedher.I was notabout toarguewiththat!

    Shedid recovercompletely, lostsomeweightand was

discharged from care.Twoyears later,a patientsaidsheknew this lady was having trouble again and she didreturnforcare.I wentthroughtheusualprocessandonceagain, there were ribfractures. This time, however, Iworkedto pindown theleg painand found thatshecomplained primarily about painin the upper thighs, which I radiographed. Low and behold, there werebilateralLoosers zonesin herupper femora. It hitmelikea trainlocomotive. Shehad adultRickets!

How couldthisbe ina lady who livedon ClearwaterBeach,Florida?ThenI learneda lessonagain. She hadTOLDme that shewasanightpersonwhoatecookiesanddrank gingerale, but I didnotpay attention tothat. The realitywasthat shewasspot on!WhenI made hercometo myoffice during theday, she gotsunshinetoform Vitamin D, which in addition to the diet andsupplementscausedthe fracturesto heal.

Live andlearn butatthe bottomline, peopleneedus.Would this lady eventually been helped somewherealongtheline?Veryprobably, butthereare thousandsand

perhaps millions of people who need the kind ofphysicians that are trained at National. People needdoctorswho willlook, listen, examine, apply a liberaldoseof commonsense, offera senseof empathy, andputit alltogether forthe benefitof thepatient, and, I mightadd, soonerthanI didinthisladys case!

Withallthe talktoday abouthealthcarereform, whatismost likely to happen is that some deals will be cutbetween thesocialistson theone handand theprivateinsurance companieson theother. If I hadto guess, Iwould think that at best thechiropracticprofessionwillend up in some kind of lowback box, or limited

musculoskeletalcare, butwhatwill happento thepatientslikethe oneI described above?Who willreallyCAREaboutthe dilemmaof thepatients? Not manyphysiciansdotoday;theyare toobusyeithertryingto make moneyortrying toappease someinsurance company.

The worldneedswhatwe bring tothe table rational, evidenceoriented, patientcenteredcare forwhichwedeserve tobe paidand paidwell.Frankly, ifwe dontgetgreedy, I thinkall ofthat canhappenjust solong aswe

    continue toplacethepatientright inthe centerof thepicture.

A decade ago, National established its Hall of Honor andinducted the first five members who were chiropracticphysicians (John Fitz Allan Howard, DC, MD, WilliamCharles Schulze, MD, DC, Joseph Janse, DC, ND, WalterWolf, DC, and Orville Hidde, DC, JD) and three non DChonorary members who were Ms. Evelyn BuchholzRichie LLD (honorary), Jacob Fisher, PhD, and EmoryGiles, PhD.

Giving Support to Your Alma Mater Gives Support to Your Dear Colleagues,

My letter will be a bit different this year. I will skip theusual commentary about how great National is. We allunderstand the reasons why a prospective studentshould choose NUHS and how our education at NUHShas enabled us to enjoy our respected standing as ahealth care professional in our communities. What I willdiscuss is the responsibility we have to our professionand how it begins with our alma mater.

Back in 2006, I was having dinner with a colleague andmentor of mine when he asked if I had made my travelarrangements for the 100th anniversary homecomingcelebration at National. Caught off guard, my facialexpression gave me away and before I could state my

excuses for not being able to go, a look ofdisappointment made my answer quite clear! Thatnight I made my plane reservations and signed up forhomecoming. That would be the homecomingweekend, 10 years after graduation, and it becamepainfully apparent to me how I had been neglecting myresponsibility to my alma mater and through thatneglect, to the profession in general.

Not only was this the first homecoming that I attendedsince graduation, but also I was embarrassed with thereality that I had not been fulfilling my responsibility. Itseems that for 10 years I had drifted further and furtherinto a state of self-centered ignorance from myunwritten responsibilities to my school on all levels. Itwas actually embarrassing to be there and not be ableto feel part of anything as I was a member ofnothing. I could not even attend the presidentsluncheon as I was not a dues paying alumnus. To saythe least, my head was hanging rather low. Tocompound the issue, I was humbled to watch thoseolder doctors who had not missed a homecoming since

graduation, who contributed each year, not till it hurt

but till it felt good! I was seeing responsibility in action, and formed a new respect for my colleagues.

That weekend, I paid my dues and have been staying activeever since. The next year or two, I became a member of thePresidents Cabinet International (PCI). More importantly, theseactions raised my professional awareness of responsibility andfrom then on my personal budget included national and stateassociation dues as well. My commitment to NUHS as a duespaying alumnus was the first step in correcting my lack ofcommitment to my profession.

As is the case with many patients, if they miss anappointment or are delinquent on a bill, they will avoidyour office out of embarrassment. If this is the case forsome of you and your relationship with NUHS, it is

time to stop feeling embarrassed and instead feel PRIDEas you are doing your part as an active alumnus!

What I am asking is simple and gradual. Every alumniout there who is not an active dues paying member ofthe NUHS Alumni Association, please become one.Every active paying alumni out there who has been inpractice 8+ years, please evaluate your ability to jointhe many levels of donating or become a member ofthe Presidents Cabinet Internationale. I encourage anycurrent PCI members to please evaluate the possibilityof raising your rank, but also know that your currentcommitment is and has been greatly appreciated!

Each of us entered this profession for different reasons, butonce we graduated we all undertook the same obligations andresponsibilities. We enjoy what we have because of those whopreceded us, and we must continue to provide support tothose who succeed us. It is important that we are concernedwith paying off our student loans and creating a practice, butlet us not get so consumed with self-preservation that we losesight of the bigger picture. We are helping keep our university

strong so our profession can advance.

So, I have made my plea and enough for all alumni to becothose of you who are able, to However, as an added incentivmembers of the PCI, burgers athe best burger in the greater C

I hope all is well and yourlook forward to seeing mhomecoming and at the PC

    Chair, Preside

    P.S.

I would also like to encouhomecoming. Personally, family vacation, althougtrip for no other reason thaInstead, it has become my ohave a weekend where theto discuss business and shwith other colleagues. I havnot interested in the panelyou tell me that every CE claout of the love of the topic/the mere requirement to pspeakers and some more thcount on learning somerejuvenated sense of purpocolleagues of all ages and classroom. It is also comfonot alone with the concerna practice. So buy yourselthe CEs, and spend some tiand friends instead of forw
