    ifhebealiar,onhimwillbehislie,andifhebetruthful,therewillbefallyousomeofthatwhich

    hethreatensyou(with);surelyAllahdoesnotguidehimwhoisextravagant,aliar.40:28

    Andhe,whobelieved,said:Omypeople,followme,Iwillguideyoutotherightcourse;Omy

    people,thislifeoftheworldisonlya(passing)enjoyment,andsurelythehereafteristheabode

    tosettle.Whoeverdoesanevil,heshallnotberecompensed(withaught)butthelikeofit,and

    whoeverdoesgood,whethermaleoffemale,andheisabeliever,theseshallenterthegarden,in

    whichtheyshallbegivensustenancewithoutmeasure.

    whichIhavewrittenaboutImamAbulHassan(Ali),andthisbookisaboutthefatherofImamAli.I

    havetalkedintheepicaboutthevirtueofAbuTalib,thenotablesheikhofQuraysh,(2)who

    securedtheProphet(s)againsthisenemiesandnowIamjusttoprefacethisbookwithaswift

    wordtalkingaboutthebookitself.Theauthorbeganhisbookwithshowingthecrimesofthe

    Umayyadsand

    refuting

    the

    accusations

    they

    ascribed

    to

    the

    Prophet's

    family.

    Neither

    he

    failed

    norhispenbecameconfused.AnditwasnowonderbecausewhoevertookthesideofAbuTurab

    (3)wouldbepowerful.ThesonofthecastleofalQateefknewthathewasinafort,againstwhich

    theenemiesweresoactivebuttheyalwaysweretheweakandthefortwassteadfastalongthe

    Itwaswellknownthattheauthorarrangedtheaccusationsinaskilledwayandheexaggerated

    theminordertoshowtheiratrocityandtoshowtheuglinessoftheliesfabricatedagainstthe

    Prophet'sfamily.Inspiteofhisrush,theenthusiasmoftheyouthandtheleapofhispen,nothing

    escapedhimtofollowthesayingsofthegreathistoriansandthemastersofHadithand

    eloquence.Ithinkthatthepreface"Atthethreshold"wasthedefendingattackingfront.The

    authorthought

    to

    gather

    the

    fabricated

    lies,

    which

    collapsed

    easily

    and

    to

    show

    the

    oftheman(AbuTalib).Hiseloquencedidn'tripenyetlikemostoftherisingyouth,butthis

    branch,whichgrewonalargetreethatgavemuchtotheArabiclanguage,promisetogiveripe

    fruitsinthenearfutureinshallah.

    TheauthordidwellwhenheshowedthepersonalityofSayyidalBat~ha'ibnShaybatulHamd(1)

    andclearedit,thenhespreaditthroughoutthechaptersofthebookandsothevirtueofthe

    guardianoftheProphet(s)grewsidebysidewiththegrowthoftheProphethimself.Theorphan

    (Muhammad)livedunderthewingofhisuncle(AbuTalib)whenchildandyoung.Whenthesunof

    theorphanshone,theunclewalkedinitslight.Hewassoloyaltohisnephew;thesonof

    Abdullah.Hestrivedtosacrificehismoney,hissonsandhimselffortheProphet(s).

    Inordertobefairtotheauthor,wehadtoacknowledgethathewassoskilledinhisanalysis.

    WhatconfirmedthiswashischoosingandanalysisoftheversessaidbyAbuTalibthatprovedhis

    faith,althoughhe(theauthor)criticizedthepoets,whomthepoeticlicenseledthemtosaywhat

    theydidn'twant.Hepleadedwithasayingofoneofthem:(Theymayfindsomethingbeautiful

    eventhoughitisn't).Butthevirtueofthepoetryappearedinwhathechose

    his

    theProphet,ImamAliandtheProphet'sfamilyaboutthefaithofAbuTalib.

    Ithoughtthatiftheauthorhadbecomealawyer,hewouldhavebeenamongtheleadinggroup.

    Hehadgoodqualitiesofcomparingandconcluding.Hecouldeasilymoveformthepremisesto

    theconclusionsandthiswouldmakehimsuccessful.AfterallIamnottostudyandanalyze

    becausethisisthejobofthereadersandthecriticsbutjusttoprefaceawordaboutthebook.

    Theauthorcouldarriveattheaimheapproachedto;heresearched,analyzed,refutedand

    defended.Themanyadvantagesofthebookmightintercedeforthefewdefectsoccurredinthe

    wordingbuttheformwouldn'taffecttheessence.Inthisbookthereweremanypearlsandafew

    shells.

    IthinkthatinsayingmyopinionaboutthebookIamnearertofairseveritythantoflattering.Yes,

    1Shi'bmeansamountainpassandsaheefameansabook,acharteroracovenant,whichusually

    writtenonaleaforapieceofleather.

    ATTHETHRESHOLD

    Iamnowbeforeaman'sbiography,whichthefanciesplayedagreatroletodistort.The

    mercenarypensdeviatedfromthewayofrightfulnessandthrewathickcoveroverthetruth,

    exactlylikewhattheydidtoeveryclearandshinytruth,justtodefameanddistortthisgreat

    personality.Iambeforeaman,whosebiographyleftprominentlinesinhistory.Hewasoneofthe

    mujahidin,whostoodinthefirstfront.Hewasoneofthose,whosupportedthetrueprinciples

    andsupportedtheprophetsandtheguidesofthehumanity.

    Aman,whosupportedthestraightbeliefwhilealltheheartsturnedasidefromhimandallthe

    eyeslookedaskanceathim.Thoseheartsandeyesscatteredgrudge,quiveredwithserious

    enmity,warnedofresistanceanddisobediencetoputoutthisfreshburningtorch...somehands

    stretchedtodoawaywiththis(newprophet),whoselighthadcuredthesoreeyes.

    Butthisstrongfort(AbuTalib)stooduptothemtowering,showinghispowerfulnessand

    challengingtheir

    reckless

    will.

    And

    then

    they

    turned

    back

    empty

    handed.

    The

    grudge

    increased

    in

    theheartsagainstthissupporterbutitwasasthegrudgeofthehorsesagainstthebridles.Aman,

    whowateredIslamwhenitwasaseedinabarrenland,guardeditagainstthewindwhenitwas

    softandtenderandthentookcareofitwhenitwasyoung.Itgrewandbecamestrong.Thelight

    spreadfromit.Noenemycouldachieveanaimuntiltheloyalguardofthisflowingspringleftto

    thebetterworldanduntiltheflowingspringdried.

    Hewasaman,whohadastandinginIslamandleftafineimpressionandaneternalvirtue.But

    thefancieswantedtheeyestobeawayfromhimortolookathimwithawrongfullook.They

    triedtheirbesttofabricateliesagainsthiminordertodistortthetruthandtocoverthevirtue.

    TheageofthecaliphateelapsedanditwasfullofthevirtuesofAbuTalib;thegreatmanofIslam.

    Theagerecordedtheexploitsofthismanandthebenevolenthandsofhimtogivehimsomeof

    hisdue.

    Thentheageofmonarchyandtyrannycame.Thisillegalauthoritywouldn'tlastexceptby

    defamingtheheroofIslam,ImamAli,becausethetyrantshadextortedthelegalrightofAliand

    hissonsandsothebiographyofhisfatherwasonesideamongotherstheauthoritytriedthebest

    todestroythinkingthatitmightdestroythepersonalityofImamAliandattemptingtoturnthe

    people'sattentionawayfromthematterofextortinghisrightofthecaliphate.

    Therulersbegantohirethoseofthefilthyconsciencesandtheopportunisthearts,whodidn't

    knowameaningofavirtuenoranendofvice.Theywouldselltheirconsciences,breakthe

    covenantsandpromises,changethetruthintofalsehood,showthefalsehoodastrueandsell

    theirreligionforastolendinaroranextortedpropertyjusttoachievetheirlowintents,tosatisfy

    theirfilthyconsciencesandtoobtainthecontentmentoftherulers.

    Suchpeoplewouldn'tbeabletoliveexceptunderthedarknessbecausethebatwouldn'tfly

    duringthebrightnessofthedaylight.Theywishedthenighttobesolongsothatthestagewould

    befreeforthemalone.

    Thefanciesplayedtherole,changedthecourseofhistoryandwantedtooverthrowthepresent

    situationsotheyexploitedthemercenariestofabricatetraditionsaccordingtothewishesofthe

    rulersuntilfabricatingtraditionsbecamesalableinthemarketofthestateatthosedays.Many

    fabricators,whoseheartswerefullofaftermathsofthepreIslamicage,begantheirattemptsto

    destroythereligioninordertosatisfytherulers.

    Thisblackmarketwasbaseduponthreethings;hidingthevirtuesofImamAli,fabricating

    traditionsagainsthimandturningtheQuranicversesconcerninghimtotheothersandturning

    theotherstohimandthirdlyascribingfabricatedvirtuestotheothercompanions.The(merchant)

    Mo'awiya(1)encouragedthismarkettoworkforthebenefitofhim.Itwasthecornerstoneofhis

    rule.He

    followed

    every

    means

    to

    strengthen

    his

    rule

    especially

    when

    he

    saw

    the

    people

    believe

    whateverhefabricatedfortheirfaithwasflickeringandthereligiondidn'treachfartherthantheir

    tongues.Theiroldpartyspiritdidn'tacceptthenewreligionyet,thefancieswerestillreadyinthe

    chests,thepersonalhopespreparedtoleapandthegoldofMo'awiyareignedinthehearts.

    Thoseoftheblackaimsandbadfanciesfollowedthiswaybecausetheyfoundthatitsatisfied

    theirgreed.TheopportunistMo'awiyafoundthemasatractablemountsoheputthoseheavy

    loadsupontheirbacks.Theyobeyedwhateverhewantedandwhenhedidn'twant,they

    themselvestriedtoflatterhim.

    Hewrotetohisgovernors:(Wewillneverforgiveanyone,whonarratessomethingaboutthe

    virtuesofAbuTuraboranyofhisfamily).(2)Theoratorshurriedtorespond.Theybegantocurse

    Ali(s)oneveryminbarthroughoutthestate.Theydeclaredtheirquittancefromhimandbeganto

    defamehimandhisfamily.Theminbars,uponwhichImamAliwascursed,weremorethan

    seventythousandones.Thepublicrespondedtotheoratorsandbelieved

    them.Youmayestimatehowmanymensittingbeforeeachminbarofthoseseventythousands

    andhowmanywomenandchildrenwerebehindeachoneofthosemen,whocertainlywould

    listentohissayingsashelistenedtotheorator'ssayings.Theirfleshwouldgrowwiththose

    fabricationsandtheirbloodwouldflowintheveinswiththem.

    ThenMo'awiyawrotetohisgovernors:(Don'tacceptanywitnessofthefollowersofAliorhis

    family)(1)totightenthegriparoundtheShia,todisgracethemandtoletthembeliabletothe

    oppressionsoftheirenemiesandtobeatargetfortheirarrows.ThenMo'awiyaassignedgreat

    giftsandhighpositionsforwhomevernarratedtraditionsascribingvirtuestoOthmanandhis

    companions.

    Onceagainhewrotetohisgovernors:(CriticizingOthmanincreasedandspreadineverycountry

    andeveryside.Whenthisbookreachesyou,invitepeopletonarratetraditionstalkingaboutthe

    virtuesofthecompanionsandthefirstcaliphs.Don'tletanytraditionnarratedbyanyMuslim

    aboutthevirtuesofAbuTurabunlessyoufabricatedsamevirtuestobeascribedtothe

    companions.ThiswillmakemedelightedandwillrefutethevirtuesofAbuTurabandwillbe

    Assoonasthebookreachedthehearings,theimaginationsflewtoinventnewsandtocreate

    traditions,someofwhichascribeduntruevirtuestothecompanionsandtheothersdefamedAli

    fabricated

    traditions.

    Wearenotinneedofsayingorreferringtothevalueofthismuchnessoftraditionswhether

    andweregiventotheteacherstobelearntbythechildren,whomemorizedthemasthey

    memorizedtheversesoftheholyQuranorbetter.

    Hencethosetraditionsbecamemorespreading,morecurrentandmoreeffectiveandonthe

    othersidetheprofitwouldbemoreinclusivethateachofthefactorykeeper,theexporterand

    theimporterwouldgethisshareaccordingtothecommerciallanguage.Sothecreatorofthe

    tradition,thespeaker,theteacherandwhoeversurroundedthemwouldshareintheprofit.

    The(greatmerchant)Mo'awiyawrotetohisgovernorsthroughoutthestate:(Seeifitisproved

    thatsomeonelovesAlithenyouaretoremovehisnamefromtheregisterofthetreasuryandto

    abitofaffectiontothesepeoplebyanyonewouldmakethatonefaceabitterwar.Hewould

    neverbeforgiven.Hewouldbeliabletoeverykindofaggression.Hisnamewouldbeomitted

    right

    Mo'awiyawouldn'tbesatisfiedwithissuingthoseunjustorders,whichkilledthesocialjustice,but

    hechosetheones,whowouldcarryoutthoseunjustorders.Heappointedhisillegitimatebrother

    ZiyadbinAbeeh(1)asthegovernorofIraqtoincreasethepressureagainsttheShiabecauseZiyad

    knewthemwellforhehadbeennearthembeforethegrudgereignedinhisheart.(2)

    saysthismaliciousandrepugnantsaying:"Idon'tthinkthatitwoulddefamehisthinking,virtues

    anddeeds...becauseMo'awiyaacknowledgedthathewashisbrotherfromAbuSufyanand

    nothingwouldbemoreimportantformanthantobecertainabouthislineage."Ifwehadtimeto

    commentonthisfalsesaying,wewoulduncoverwhatdestruction,misleading,fabricationand

    distortionoftheprinciplesofIslamandhumanitytheselittlewordshad.Itobjectedthetradition

    oftheProphet(s)whensaying:"Thenewbornbabyistobeascribedtoitsmotheranditis

    prohibitedtoascribeittotheadulterer).Itencouragedjoiningtheillegitimatechildtothe

    adultereranditdidn'tconsidersecedingfromthelegalimamasasinoraguilt...!Yes,allthese

    baddoingprovedthegoodthinking,thevirtueandtheexcellentdeedsofZiyad...whatdisgrace!

    WhatadifferencebetweenthisSandoobiandajJahidhwaswhentalkingaboutthedisgraceof

    ascribingZiyadtoAbuSufyanashisfather.ThisconsidereditasvirtueandexcellenceofZiyadand

    thatexcludedMo'awiya,whenhejoinedZiyadtohisfather,fromthedissolutetojoinhimtothe

    MywonderandsurpriseaboutthisrepugnantsayingofasSandoobidwindledafterstepsof

    readinghisexplantion.Istoppedsurprisedlybeforehiscomment,whichblackenedsevenlinesin

    Abadites

    sect

    of

    theKharijites)opposingallthetruetraditionsmentionedinalloftheSahihs(thebooksofHadith)

    andagreeduponbyalltheMuslims.TheProphet(s)saidwhenreferringtotheKharijites:"They

    renegadelikethearrowgoingoutofthegameanimal".ButthisSandoobisaidaboutthem:"They

    arethebestoftheMuslims.Theydetesttheheresies,whicharesofarfromthetruereligionand

    Hewasn'tsatisfiedwiththis.Headded:"Iwasdeceivedbythesayingsoftheiropponentsabout

    themandIusedthesameaccusationsinsomeofthefootnotesinthefirstvolumeofmybookbut

    thenthetruthappeared.Iknewthatthey(theKharijites)wereamongthebestoftheMuslims,

    whodependedinalltheirworshipsanddealings upontheQuranandtheSunna.Don'tcare

    Mo'awiyausedeverymeanstosellandbuythesegoods.Hewasthatopportunistdealer,who

    didn'tleaveanyopportunityunlesshewouldexploititforhisprivateinterestselfishly.

    Bribes,giftsandpositionswereinsignificantpricestobuywiththemmanyconsciencesput

    forwardinthatblackmarket!Soitwaseasyforhimtoconcludeadealeverydaytobuya

    conscience,tosellacovenantandtodoawaywithabelief.

    sectoftheMuslims).MayAllahbepleasedwithalloftheMuslims."HeprayedAllahtobepleased

    withthose,whorenegadedIslamandheconsideredthemasbeingdevotedtotheSunna.Idon't

    knowwhathewillsayaboutwhatwasmentionedintheProphet'stradition,whichwasagreed

    uponamongalltheMuslims,aboutthosepeople.Howdidhegatherbetweenthisandhis

    beseechingAllahtobepleasedwithalloftheMuslimsiftheKharijites,aftertheyrenegaded

    Islam,wereamongtheMuslims?TheMuslims,exceptthosewhocontradictedthetrueSunna,

    werecertainofwhattheProphet(s)hadsaidabouttheKharijitesandtheydidn'tconsiderthem

    butastheProphet(s)hadconsideredthem.Theywerebutapostates.Theirprayerswerebut

    whistlingandclapping.

    TheyreadtheQuranbutitdidn'treachtheirclaviclesastheProphet(s)haddescribedthem.They

    wereagreatimageofcunningreligioushypocrisywhichdeceivedthenaivelikethisinexperienced

    Sandoobi!InoticedaKharijitetendencyinhimbeforeIquotedhisfootnotehere.Wheneverhe

    talkedaboutoneoftheKharijites,hefilledhisspeechwithpraise,tributeandcommendationbut,

    onthecontrary,whenhewantedtotalkaboutsomeonehavingaShiitetendency,

    heabridgedifhedidn'tignorehimorcriticizedhim aspossibleashecouldwhateverpersonality

    thatone

    had

    except

    for

    what

    he

    was

    obliged

    to

    mention

    unwillingly.

    The

    main

    cause

    behind

    his

    situationconcerningZiyad,theKharijitesandtheShiawasbecausetherewassomethinginhis

    hearttowardsImamAli...ItwasnotbutafruitfromtheseedofMo'awiyatoresistImamAliin

    ordertocontroltheMuslims'affairs.

    ChapterOne:TheRouteOfLifeAHouse

    Inadarkmilieuandignorantenvironment...amilieuthatfellunderobscurityand

    unenlightenmentconcerningthereligiousviewwheretheidolsweresomanythateverytribehad

    itsgodsandeveryfamilyhaditsgods!Infacteverypersonhadhisorhergodthatnoone

    participatedhim/herwith.

    Inthatmilieuandinthatenvironmentwherethefeelingwasinactive,thesensewaslostandthe

    eyeswereclosedtoseeeverysignshowingthatGodwasbutoneandonlywithonparticipantin

    Hisrule.

    Inthatmilieuwherethestrongwindinvadedtochangethedivinereligionandthetruebeliefof

    Abrahamtotheworshipofpiecesofstoneandwood,whichdidn'thear,seeorperceiveand

    didn'tbenefitorharm.ManhewedhisgodwithhishandstobehisintercessorwithAllah.Inthat

    milieuwherethenightcoveredwithitsdarknessandfromamongthosemessageofpeoplewith

    theirclosedeyes,lockedheartsanddeadsenses,wholivedinthatdarknessandthatabyssof

    unenlightenment...fromamongthousandsandthousandsofpeopleamanmightbreaktherule

    andfromamongmillionsofhousesahousemightbedifferent.

    Amongthese

    and

    those

    of

    the

    crowded

    masses

    of

    people

    aman

    might

    excel

    to

    see

    with

    anew

    eyeandafullblownheartarayoflight,whichwouldlighthiswaythroughthatdarkness...he

    wouldreadinthedivinebookstoquiethisheartandconscienceafterlongdoubtingwherehe

    passedbyacriticalstage,whichwastheworsestageofchangeanddevelopmentwithallitsfears

    andfatigues.

    Hereadinthosebookstofindthattheybroughtgoodnewsaboutanewprophet.Hesawthe

    natureinformingofanewprophettobesent.Hefoundeverythingaroundhimreferringtothe

    necessityoftheexistenceofthatprophetandconfirmingthathisexpectedcomingwouldbe

    soon.Hefoundinthebookswhatdefinedthelandofthatprophet.WasitbutMecca,fromwhich

    thatlightwouldshine?Hisheartfriskedandhissoulbecamerefreshed.Hewishedhewouldbe

    oneof

    those,

    who

    would

    get

    abit

    of

    that

    shining

    ray

    and

    to

    defend

    that

    guiding

    light.

    Andfromamongtheseandthose...andfromamongthosehouses,whichnooneofthemwas

    withoutapieceofstoneorwoodthateveryoneinthehousehadtoprostratehimselforherself

    beforeandtotendtoservilely.Itwasthelastthingtobefarewelledandthefirstthingtobe

    receivedwhenonewastotravel.Fromthisstillgodtheyexpectedhelpandsuccess.Thesame

    hands,whichmadethisgod,extendedtowardsitpraying,beggingandfearingsomuch.Thatwas

    theutmostdeclineoftheintellectuality,thehumanvaluesandthecreativemindofman.

    Fromamongthosehousestherewasonehousethatnothreadofthatdarknessenteredandthe

    lamp,whichProphetAbraham(s)hadlit,wasstillalightandnowindcouldputitout.Thishouse

    stillbelievedinthetruebeliefofAbraham.Thishouseneverdoubtedaboutthetruthfulnessof

    themissionofAbraham,bywhichhehadprovedthemonotheismoftheOneandOnlyGod.

    Thishouse,whichwasrelatedtoAbrahamintwoways;thewasyofprogenyandfatherhoodand

    thewayoffaithandmonotheism,wasbutcontinuanceofthemissionofAbraham(s).Inthis

    faithfulhouse,whichneitherignorancenorpolytheismhadsoiled...inthishonoredhouseAbu

    Talibopenedhiseyestowardstherouteoflife.Hesawinthishousealifedifferentfromthelife

    hesawamongpeopleandhelivedalifedifferentfromthatpeoplelived.Hesawinthechiefof

    thishousehisfatherAbdulMuttalib amandifferentfromtheotherman.Hedidn'tseeinthose

    peoplesavemassesoffleshesandbonesordollswithoutabitofreason.Heopenedhiseyesto

    seeaswhatDi'bil(1)lateronwouldopenhiseyestoseeandtocry:"Iopenmyeyestowards

    many,butIseenone!"

    Hesawinhisfather,AbdulMuttalib,theobeyedleaderandtherespectedman,whocarriedout

    whateverhesaidandjudgedandnoonewoulddenyhisjudgement.Hesawsogenerous.Heused

    toservebanquetsthateventheriderwouldgethissharefromuponhiscamel.Somefoodwas

    putonthetopsofthemountainsthatbirdsandbeastsmighteatfromuntilhewascalled(the

    profluent)and(thefeederofthebirdsofthesky).HeprayedAllahandAllahrespondedtohis

    prayers.HewaspleasedwithbyAllahintheheavenandwaspraisedontheearth;thereforehe

    wascalled(ShaybatulHamd;theoldmanofpraise).

    Hesawinhisfathermanyexcellencesthatnooneotherthanhisfatherhad.AbdulMuttalib

    enactedmanylawsthatshowedhisguidance,sublimity,purityofinnerselfandthegreatfaiththat

    hecompiledwithwhatAbraham(s)hadpreachedat.Heforbadehimselffrom

    sometime.OneoftheJewswasundertheprotectionofAbdulMuttalib.OnedaythisJewspoke

    roughlytoHarbinoneofthemarketsofTehama.Harbbecameangry.Heincitedsomeoneto

    assassinatetheJew.HeinheritedtreacheryfromhisgrandfatherAbdShams.Treacherywasa

    characteristicofthisfamilyalongtheages.WhenAbdulMuttalibknewaboutthedoingofHarb,

    hedesertedhimforhedidn'twanttoassociatewithatreacherousman.Buthedidn'tletHarbget

    free.HeforcedhimtopayonehundredshecamelstothekilledJew'scousinasbloodmoney.(3)

    Ebrahaandhissoldiers'heads.Thosestoneswerequickerinkillingthantheatomicbombsbut

    throughouthislife.AbdulMuttalibanswered:"ByAllah,thereisanotherworldafterthisworld,in

    whichthebenevolentwillberewardedfortheirbenevolenceandtheevildoerswillbepunished

    AbuTalibsawhisfatherAbdulMuttalibwhenhewasnewsedthathissonAbdullah(Abdul

    Muttalib'sson)hadbegotanewbornbaby...thisnewbornbaby,whichtheuniversehadbeen

    waitingfortoreceivetheshineofitsbrightness.Assoonasthisbabyfacedtheuniverse,the

    grandfatherwasnewsed.Hecametothebaby'smotheraskinghertotellhimofallwhatshesaw

    duringthegivingbirthtoherbaby.ThenhetookthebabytotheKaabatoprayAllahandtothank

    Himforthisgreatfavor.Hebegantorecite:

    PraisebetoAllah,Whograntedmethisgoodboy

    Hemastersoveralltheboysalthoughheisyetincradle

    IprayAllahtoprotecthimuntilIseehimbeaman

    IprayAllahtoprotecthimfromtheevilofeveryspitefulandeveryenvier.(2)

    AbdulMuttalibtookmuchcareofthisorphan(Muhammad)andtriedhisbesttobringhimup.He

    lookedatthisboywithadeepinspectivelookpiercingthroughthefutureandseeingthatthis

    orphanwouldmaketheearth;eastorwest,submittohisgreatnessandwouldmakethehearts

    pulsewithhisloveandfollowhismissionandthetonguesspeakofhimandpraisehimwiththe

    signsofhonoringconstantly.AcarpetwasspreadforAbdulMuttalib,therespectedleader,the

    glorifiedmanamongQurayshandtheobeyedchiefamongtheArabs,aroundtheKaabaandhe

    heart!Onceagainhesaidtotheone,whowantedtopreventMuhammadfromsittingonhis

    grandfather'scarpet:"Letmysonsit!Hefeelsthathewillbeanimportantman.Ihopethathe

    willreachahighglorythatnooneoftheArabshadreachedbeforehimnoanyonewillreach

    afterhim."

    Athirdtimehesaid:"Returnmysontomyseat!Heforefeelsofagreatrule.Hewillbeofgreat

    therewasbutoneevidence,itwouldbeenoughtoprovethathisgrandsonMuhammadwasthe

    veryone,whowouldbethatexpectedprophet,aboutwhomthedivineBookoftheprevious

    prophetshadtalked.

    Somebarrenpassed.Therainstoppedandthewaterbecamerate.Thegreengrassyellowedand

    thattorrentialmilkoftheuddersdried.Lifebecamesodifficult.Griefovercamethefaces.Fearof

    theunknowndarkenedtheeyes.NoonewastointercedeforthemsaveAbdulMuttalib.Withhis

    greatspirittheyaskedhimtointercedewithGod.Theheavenrainedheavilyandliferefreshed

    again.TheprayeroftheintercessorwasrespondedbyhisGodtorevivethosedyingsoulsafter

    thelossofmoniesandthedeathofcattle.

    Avisioninthesleephadledthemtothisman,whowasnotablenearAllah,tointercedeforthem

    andthathisintercessionwouldn'tbedenied.Itwasavisionthattalkedabouthonoredqualities

    yourbondmaidsanddaughtersofyourbondmaids.Youseewhatweareafflictedwith.Thebarren

    yearsexhaustedus.Theydidawaywithallthecattleandtheyareabouttodowiththeselves.O

    Allah,takeawaythebarrennessandbringusrain,fertilityandrevival!"Whatatruthfulprayerit

    was!AssoonasitascendedtotheHeaven,theBeneficentGodrespondedtoit.

    Assoonastheyleftthemountain,theskywascoveredwithheavycloudsbearingfertilityand

    revivalanddrivingawaythebarrenness.Itbegantorainandthevalleyswerefilledwith

    goodness.Thelipssmiled,theheartsdancedandtheeyesshinedwithhappiness...but

    neverthelesssomefacesfrowned,somelipswrithed,someheartsweredisgustedandsomeeyes

    scatteredraysofgrudge!ThecaravanwasabouttoreachMeccawhenasweetsoundcameoutof

    oneofthehousesofMeccaexpressingjoyandhappinessafterAllahhadrespondedtotheprayer

    ofAbdulMuttalib.ItwasRaqeeqabintAbuSayfibinSham,whoselipsannouncedhersweet

    verses:

    ByShaybatulHamdAllahirrigatedourcountry

    Afterwelostthemeansoflifeandtherainretardedmuch.

    Thevalleyflowedwithwaterwherecattleandtreesrevive.

    ItwasablessingofAllahandthankstothismanthatMudharhadnevernewsedwithbetterthan.

    WhatablessednameitwasthatAllahmadethecloudsrainforthesakeofhim,whohadno

    lab.HeraisedhishandstowardstheHeaven.Hiseyesshonewithfaith;hisheartpulsedwith

    sincerityandhistongueprayedsubmissively:"OAllah,theGodoftheswiftlighting,theGodof

    thepealingthunder,theGodofthegodsandtheSolverofthedifficulties!TheseareQayssand

    Mudhar,(1)whoarethebestamongthepeoples.Theirheadsaredisheveledandtheirbacksare

    hunched.TheycomplaintoYoutheirweaknessandthelossofselvesandmonies!OAllah,give

    themthunderingcloudsandpouringskytomaketheirlandsmileandtheirdamagedisappear!"

    Assoonasheutteredthesewords,athunderingdarkcloudwastravelingtowardshim,asa

    responseforhispray,onitswaytowardsthebarrencountryofthosepeople.ThenAbdulMuttalib

    saidtothem:"OpeopleofQayssandMudhar,goback!Youarewatered."(2)

    AbuTalibbegantorecite:

    Ourfatherwastheintercessor,bywhompeoplewere

    wateredbyheavythunderingclouds.

    sightrovedhereandthereuntilitmetAbuTalib,whomnoonewasbetterthantoundertakethis

    heavytask,besidesthathehadparticipatedincarryingoutthetasksincethelightofthisshinning

    lamphadshone:

    OAbdManaf'Ientrustyouwiththisaloneoneafterme.(2)AbuTalibacceptedthistaskwillingly

    anddelightfully.Herecited:Youdon'tneedtorecommendmetomyduty,

    heredityhadimportanteffectinformingthepersonalityofman,asthepsychologistssaid,soAbu

    Talibhadmadeinfiniteuseofthisheredity.

    AbuTalibwasaclearimageofabrightpast.HehadqualitiesofhisfatherAbdulMuttalib,his

    grandfatherHashemandhisgreatgrandfathersthatmadeofhimthatbrightwonderfulimage.No

    onewould

    deny

    that

    Abu

    Talib,

    as

    Allah

    willed,

    was

    the

    adopter

    of

    the

    Prophet

    of

    Islam,

    who

    was

    theperfectimageofmanandtheidealcopyofhumanity.

    NoonewoulddenythattheProphethadgrown,beenbroughtupandspenthisyouth,whichwas

    thegreaterandthemoreeffective,critical,sensitiveandaffectivestageofman'slife,underthe

    careofAbuTalib.

    andtheenemyasthesunwhensendingitsraystothecavesandtothetopsofmountains.But

    thecoldednosewouldn'tsmelltheredolentfragranceandthesoreeyewouldn'tseetheraysof

    thesun!

    Leadershipandsovereigntywouldn'tbegainedwithoutplentyofmoneybutalthoughAbuTalib

    wasnotsorich,hewastherespectedleader,thefirstmasterandtheobeyedchiefandthismight

    bethecharacteristicofAbuTalibaloneandnooneelseotherthanhim.(2)

    Eventhoughhewasemptyhandedbuthehadagreatrichspirit.Hewassogreatwithhis

    qualitiesandvirtuesandnoonewouldeverreplacedhim.Heinheritedhisfather'squalities.He

    forgavewithoutbeingaskedforandgaveopenhandedlywithoutconsideringitasdoingfavor.He

    himself

    abad

    situationthathemightnotbeabletoservethepilgrims.Hedecidedtoborrowfourteenthousand

    dirhamsfromhisbrotheragain.ButalAbbasinthistimewouldn'tlendhimthemoneyexcepton

    aconditionthatifhecouldn'tpaythedebtinthenextyear,hewouldhavetogiveupwatering

    thepilgrimsandtoletalAbbasundertakeit...anditwasso.(1)

    Thelossofwateringthepilgrimsdidn'taffecthishighpositionnorharmedhisleadershipthathe

    wasthefountofgoodnessinMeccaandhe,whoseprayerswerealwaysrespondedto,wasthe

    pointofconnectionbetweentheHeavenandtheearth.Hehadsomuchhighqualitiesthatmade

    himaleadersurroundedbyhonorandgloryandmadehimasafortressthatnodefamemight

    reachhimnorhemightbeshakenbeforeawind.

    HisqualitiesimposeduponustobelievethathehadfollowedthebeliefofProphetAbraham(s).

    tobeasignforadivinemission,whichwouldshinetodrivethedarkcloudprevailingoverthe

    existenceaway.Butitmightbesurprisingforthose,whousedtoliveunderthedarknessandthat

    itmightbetoodifficultforthemtoopentheireyesbeforeabrightlamp.

    Buhayralivinginhiscell.Butitwasthefirsttimeforthecaravantoseethismonk.Asmuchas

    theytraveledthroughthislandbuttheyhadn'tmetortalkedwiththismonk.

    Themonkcameoutofhiscellandsawthecaravan.Therewassomethingthatdrewhisattention.

    Therewasacloudmovingtoshadowoneofthoseinthecaravan.Whenthecaravanstopped,the

    monknoticedanotherthing.Henoticedthatthetree,whichtheystoppednear,bentitbranches

    toshadowthesameone,whohadbeenshadowedbythecloud.

    Hewassoastonishedbutwhenherememberedwhowastherebetweenthelinesoftheholy

    Bookhehad,hisastonishmentlefthisprudentmind.Hecamedownfromhiscell,orderedhis

    companionstoservefoodandinvitedthecaravansaying:"OpeopleofQuraysh,Ihaveserved

    somefoodforyou.Ilikethatallofyou;thelittleboysandtheoldmen,theservantsandthe

    Onefromamongthecaravansaid:"OBuhayra,byAllahyouhavesomethinginyourmindtoday.

    caravanwhereasthecaravanusedtopassbythecellsincealongtimewithoutattractingabitof

    Buhayra'sattentionsowhyitwassothatday?

    AndtheconversationbetweenBuhayraandAbuTalib,whichhadfirmevidence...AbuTalibsaid

    thathewashissonbutBuhayraansweredwithnoanydoubtthathewasnotAbuTalib'ssonand

    thathisfatherwouldnotbealiveandthenhewarnedhimoftheJewsbecausehewouldbeof

    family'sexpenses.Moreoverhethoughtthatagreatfutureawaitinghisnephewandhedidn't

    wanthimtobedependentorinactive.

    Hethoughtthatitwouldbebetterforhisnephewtoworkintradeforoneofthosewealthy

    peopleofMecca.Thepositionandthehighqualitieshisnephewhadwouldmakeeveryonehappy

    toemployhim.Infactthemerchantswouldcompletetowinhim.Khadeeja(1)heardofwhat

    conversationwasbetweenAbuTalibandhisnephew.Shesentforhimandshewouldbevery

    happytoemploysuchtruthfulandtrustworthymantoundertakehertrades.

    Muhammad(s)camebackwithgreatprofits.ThismadehimhaveagoodpositioninKhadeeja's

    goodheartuntilshelovedhimandwishedifhewouldbeherspouse.Shewouldn'tfindanyone

    betterthanhiminhishandsomeness,morals,honesty,truthfulnessandpuredeeds.Khadeeja,

    sincethatmomentwhenshelistenedtoherservantMaysara,whoaccompaniedMuhammad(s)

    inhistravels,whentellingherabouteverysignhappenedtoMuhammad(s)ontheirwayto

    Theweddingtookplace.TheleaderofQurayshandthemasteroftheArabs,atthattime,Abu

    Talibstooduptodoaspeech.Hesaid:"PraisebetoAllah,Whohasmadeusoftheprogenyof

    AbrahamandthedescentofIshmaelandtheoriginofMi'addandtheraceofMudhar.Hehas

    madeustheguardiansofHisHouseandtheguardsofHisSanctum.HehasmadeforusaHouse,

    towhichpeopleintendfromeverywhere,madeforusasafesanctumandhadmadeustherulers

    overthepeople.

    MynephewMuhammadbinAbdullahisn'tcomparedwithamanunlesshewillbepreferredto

    himinhonor,nobility,virtueandreason.Ifhehasalittlemoney;moneyisatransientshadow,a

    changeablethingandapaidbackdebt.

    HereisMuhammad.Youknowhislineagewell....HeproposedtoengageKhadeejabint

    Khuwaylidandpaidherdowryassoandso....ByAllah,hewillbeofhighpositionandgreat

    ThisspeechofAbuTalibshowedtwothings;

    HebeganhisspeechwithpraisingAllahformakingthemoftheprogenyofAbrahamandthe

    descentsofIshmaelthattheidolatryhadneverpollutedthemwithitsfilthsandthattheythe

    Hashemites wereacontinuousoriginandaremainderrayconnectedwiththefirstlightof

    AbrahamsotheywereaneternalsymbolofthedivinemissionofAbraham(s).

    ThisqualitythatdistinguishedthemfromtherestofpeoplemadethemtheguardiansoftheHoly

    House(theKaaba),whichhadbeenbuiltbytheirfatherAbrahamontheorderofAllah.Hence

    theyaloneweretheguardiansoftheKaaba;thereforetheybecametherulersoverthepeople.

    Thenhewentonshowingtheexcellenceofhisnephew.Hedeclaredthathisnephewwasthe

    mostperfectmanandhewaspreferabletotheallinthescalesofmoralsandvalues.Noone

    wouldbecomparabletohiminhisqualitiesandexcellencesatall.

    greatdayandaskedhisothersons,whoeverofthemwouldremainuntilthisday,tobelievein

    him;the

    man,

    who

    would

    be

    chosen

    by

    the

    Heaven

    for

    the

    great

    mission.

    SincethedeathofAbdulMuttalib,AbuTalibhadbeenwaitingforthedawnofthisday

    impatientlyforhedidn'tknowwhetherhislifewouldreachthisdayorhispagewouldbefolded.

    Hewasafraidthatthedeathmightattackhimashisfatherwithoutattendingthedawnofthisday

    andhewouldmissthehonorofbelievinginitsrightness,gloryandgreatness.

    Yes,thatdaycamewithitssmilingfaceandAbuTalib'sfaceshone,hisheartdelightedandhis

    soulcounteredtoseewithhiseyesthedawnofthatexpectedday.

    AndnowMuhammadtheProphet(s)wenttohisunclealAbbas,AbuTalib'sbrother,andsaidto

    him:"Allahhasorderedmetoannouncemymission."Heaskedhisuncletosupporthim,butal

    Abbasfoundthathewasnotabletoundertakethisheavytasksoheapologizedtohisnephew

    saying:"...butyouaskyouruncleAbuTalibbecauseheistheeldestofyourunclesandifhe

    doesn'tsupportyou,certainlyhewon'tdisappointyouorbetrayyou."

    WhenAbuTalibsawthemboth,hethoughtthattherewassomethingimportant.Heasked:

    "Whatisthematter?Whatmadeyoucomeatthistime?HelistenedtohisbrotheralAbbas

    tellinghimofwhatmattertheirnephewhadbrought.AssoonasAbuTalibheardthat,hiseyes

    shonedelightfullyandsaidhissaying,whichwouldfilltheheartofMuhammad(s)withhappiness,

    courageandpowertogooncarryingouttheorderofhisGodstably,courageouslyandfaithfully

    becausehegotagoodassistantandastrongfortress,towhichhewouldresortifanystormfaced

    him.

    AbuTalibsaid:"Omynephew,setabout!Youareexalted,defendedbyagreatpartyandhonored

    ofagreatfather.ByAllah,nooneconfutesyou,unlesshewillbeconfutedwithsharptonguesand

    sharpswords.ByAllah,theArabswillsubmittoyou.Myfatherhadreadallthebooksandhe

    oftensaid:"Therewillbeaprophetfrommyprogeny.IwishIwouldlivetillthatdaytobelievein

    him.Whoeverofmychildrenlivestillthatdayhastobelieveinhim."(1)AbuTalibencouraged

    Muhammad(s)togoonhismissionandpromisedtodefendhim,tosupporthimandtosacrifice

    forthesakeofthemission.Thenherememberedwhathisfatherhadsaidtohimandtohis

    brothersinhiswill.TheexpecteddaycameandMuhammad(s)becametheApostleofAllahso

    AbuTalibhadtobelieveinhimandtosupporthimtoachievethewillofhisfathersothatthesoul

    ofAbdulMuttalibwouldcontentandhiseyewoulddelight.

    ThiswasthefirstevidenceofAbuTalib'sfaithinMuhammad'smission,otherwisehewouldbe

    thefirsttodenyitandrefutewhatMuhammad(s)pretended.Hecoulddothatwhereas

    Muhammadwashisfostersonbesidesthathismissionwasnotyetactiveoracceptedbyanyone.

    Itwasstillaseedwithoutastemyet.Itwaseasyforhimtoperishitwithoutanydifficultyorat

    leasthecouldlethisnephewalonewithoutpromisingtosupporthimortoencouragehimso

    enthusiastically.

    ButwefoundthatAbuTalibwaswaitingforthatexpectedeventtooccurinamomentoranother

    andwhenhesawthefirstsignoftheprophecyhedidn'tbecomesurprised;thereforeassoonas

    alAbbasendedhistalkwithhisnephew,AbuTalibencouragedMuhammad(s)toannouncehis

    missionwithoutanyhesitation.

    IfAbuTalibhadn'tbelievedinhisnephew'spretense,hewouldn'thaveencouragedhimtospread

    itandhewouldhavetakenadifferentsituation.Buthisfaithand

    TheDayoftheWarning

    Anotherdaycame.Itwasnotlessimportantthanthatdayoftherevelationofthemission.

    WhentheQuranicverseoftheWarning(Andwarnyournearestrelations...Quran,26:214)was

    reveledto

    the

    Prophet

    believed

    in

    the

    mission,

    to

    invite

    the

    close

    relatives

    of

    Quraysh

    and

    to

    tell

    themaboutthepurposeofthisinvitationbutthecrowedseparatedwithoutanyuse.TheProphet

    (s)triedagaintogatherthem.Andassoonashefinishedhisspeech,hisuncleAbuTalibsaidto

    him:"Howmuchweliketoassistyou,toacceptyourrelativesgatheringandIamoneofthembut

    Iamthefirstofthemtodowhatyoulike.Followwhatyouareorderedof.ByAllah,Iwillstillbe

    yourguardandprotectorbutmyselfdoesn'tobeymetogiveupthereligionofAbdulMuttalib."

    andhewouldn'tconfuteAbuLahabsoseverelyuntilhesaidtohim:"Besilent,Oyoutosayso...

    Sowhydideachofthemhaveadifferentsituation?Thisdefended,assisted,encouragedthe

    Prophet(s)andstrivedagainstthearrogantsofQurayshwithasharptongueandthatdefamed

    theProphet,preventedpeoplefrombelievinghim,distributedhisspeechandmockedhismission.

    Wasn'tthefaithalonethatimposeduponAbuTalibhissituation,whichhehadneverdeviated
