Op blz. 7 van zijn interessante artikel verteltHerfs dat reuzenslangen heel behendig zijn enzelfs wel drie levende prooien tegelijk in apartekronkels kunnen wurgen. Hij vermeldt daarinook waarnemingen van anderen over ditaspect van hun gedrag. Onlangs kon ik zelfook enige staaltjes van de behendigheid vanmijn boa’s waarnemen en fotograferen.

Thuis bezit ik twee volwassen en enkelejongere Boa constrictor. Elke boa voed ik uit dehand met dode prooi, op de volwassen man nadie het liefst in afzondering eet. Het vrouwtjezet ik voor het eten op een huishoudtrap inonze zitkamer en de jongen plaats ik in detakken die ik daar aan het plafond hebopgehangen (zie Verveen voor details).Daardoor zijn de dieren in hun eetgedrag goedte observeren.

Omdat ik - met handschoenen aan en eenbeschermingskap op - de prooi met de kopvooruit aanbied, grijpen de boa’s de prooimeestal op die plaats. Wanneer dat nietgebeurt moeten zij de kop op gaan zoeken.Het bleek mij dat zij in die zoekfase makkelijkworden verleid een tweede aangeboden prooite slaan. De kronkel met de eerste prooi wordtondertussen naar achter opgeschoven. In dezesituatie hangt de boa meestal aan zijn staartvan de tak omlaag (foto 1).

Op een keer had ik alleen maar een serie veelte kleine ratjes om de jonge boa’s mee tevoeren. Ze waren erg hongerig en hapten goedtoe, ondanks de moeite die zij hadden deze tekleine beestjes te verorberen. Eén slang haptebij herhaling in de handschoen, vóór hij de ratzelf te pakken had. Iedere keer moest ik mijnhand uit de handschoen halen. De slang had

At home I have two adult Boa constrictorand several younger ones. I hand-feed eachof them dead prey, but for the adult male.He is a shy animal and needs to be fed inisolation. To feed the other snakes I placethe adult female on the wooden platform of astepladder that I put in our sitting room. Theyoung are placed on hawthorn branches,which I suspended from the ceiling (cf.Verveen for details). I am, hence, able toeasily observe the feeding behaviour of myboas.

I use gloves and a facemask to present thedead prey – mainly rats - headfirst to theboas. The snake often grasps the prey at itshead. When this is not the case than it hasto search for the site of ingestion, the snoutof the prey. While the boa is busy searchingfor it, I noted that another dead prey animaloffered to it may easily distract the snake tocatch that one too. It then moves theconstriction containing the first prey to amore caudal position. In this situation thesnake usually hangs down from its branch,only suspended by the caudal part of itsbody (picture 1).

I was recently left with a set of rather smallprey animals. The boas were quite hungry,however, and did eat well, notwithstanding

tenslotte zowel twéé handschoenen in dekronkels als – als derde prooi - het ratje in debek. Terwijl hij hangend aan de staart het ratjeverorberde maakte ik verschillende foto’s vandeze fraaie situatie (foto’s 2).

Toen ik later deze foto’s bekeek, merkte ik datéén set een fraaie driedimensionale weergavemogelijk maakte, al loopt het bij de kop wat mis,omdat de boa ondertussen met de maaltijd verderwas gegaan. Verder hangt door de verschillen inflitsrichting ook de schaduw op de gordijnen in deruimte.

Ik heb er drie combinaties van gemaakt (foto’s2A, B en C). De dubbele afbeelding 2A is tebekijken door scheel te kijken (bvb met behulpvan je wijsvinger) tot je drie beelden ziet en danop de middelste ervan scherp te stellen. Wanneerdit niet lukt kun je een ca 40 cm lang stuk kartonnemen en dit aan één kant tussen je neus en metde andere kant op de zwarte streep in 2B tezetten. Na wat in de verte staren vallen deafbeeldingen op elkaar en kun je daarop scherpstellen. Beide mogelijkheden vereisen enigeoefening. Tenslotte heb ik het rode beeld van defoto voor het linkeroog en de blauwe en groenedelen van die voor het rechteroog in één afdruksamen gevoegd in 2C. Door een rood cellofaanpapiertje voor het linkeroog en een groen, blauwof blauwgroen cellofaanpapiertje voor hetrechteroog te houden is de foto in drie dimensiesin zwart-wit te bekijken. Zij die van jongs af maaréén oog effectief kunnen gebruiken zullen zichechter met de afzonderlijke foto’s tevredenmoeten stellen.

Het valt op dat de boa heel goed in staat is zowelde staart als elk deel van zijn lijf gelijktijdig enzowel letterlijk als figuurlijk handig te gebruiken.Deze slang “bezit dus tenminste drie handen”.

The result was quite striking and Imade several pictures of the snakeswallowing the rat while it kept the twogloves in its slings (picture-set 2).

When I studied the pictures I discovered tomy delight the presence of a nearly perfect3-D set of this behavioural feat, but for thehead of the snake for it had continued toswallow the rat. The differences in thedirections of the flash also caused theshadow on the curtains to be situated inspace.

I combined these two pictures into the threesets of picture 2. Set 2A needs to be lookedat with your eyes crossed. Try to look atyour index finger and at set 2A at the sametime. The second set is a wall-eyed one.Use an about 40 cm long piece ofcardboard. Place one end of it on your noseand the other end on the black line of picture2B and gaze until the pictures float together.If nothing works, then a red piece ofcellophane in front of your left eye and agreen, blue or bluegreen one in front of yourright eye will enable you to see a black-and-white picture of the boa in three dimensionsat picture 2C. However, those who havenever been able to use two eyes in staticthree-dimensional viewing have to becontent with the pictures as such.

It is really amazing that the boa is able to sodeftly use both its tail and all other parts ofits body at the same time and in differentactivities. The boa is prehensile all over andit, hence, “does own at least three hands”.
