For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930's and '40's. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each contain 1 line of a 4 line couplet ... And the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popu-lar shaving cream.

Poco Quatros Model A Ford Club - MAFCA Chapter # 10328

Spoonnote: Newsletter Vol 55. No. 5,

Good meeting. John Gibbs did a good job on the program of “magnafluxing” cast iron items to locate cracks. Rumor has it that the tour to Canyon De Chelly was wonderful. Cars averaged 1100 miles traveled. 2755 miles driven in one day total was submitted to MAFCA for the Club for their “National Challenge.” The Power Ford Show & Tell had 19 “A”s and 14 “T”s. Happy Trails. A few ideas to keep in mind. A free turning front wheel hub makes an excellent wheel balancer.

Mount a wheel, turn and test for heavy point, add standard wheel weights on opposite side as needed (add weights on both sides of wheel if over 1 ounce). For 21" wheels, wrap ¼" lead wire around spokes. Lead wire can be found at most fishing supply stores.

A bit of STP or Lubriplate on surfaces of "force fit" gears, bearings and bushings will help to ease assembly. This includes crankshaft timing gear, steering worm, rear end carrier bearings, water pump, king pin bushings and similar items. A few Model B timing gear covers find their way to Model A's. "B" covers have a built-in advance and accurate Model A timing is impossible using the "pin-in-the-hole" method. Peep into # 1 with plug removed and top dead center on compression stroke. Retard spark and set distributor as usual. This will by-pass the pin method and ignore "B" cover. For the adventurous, speedometers can be adjusted to correct the

miles per hour portion. A shorting bar on the rotating magnet can vary the speed indication several miles per hour. Open the magnet gap to increase speed indication, close down the magnet gap to show less speed.

A tablespoonful of baking soda in a tuna can of water should be

handy as a finger dip when working on a battery. Saves clothes, tools and eyes.

Replacement fan belts always seem a bit short and present a testy

challenge to install. Do not force the belt over the pulleys or a dis-torted pulley or torn belt will result. Temporarily pull the generator mounting bolt, install belt and reinstall bolt and adjust tension. Belts about 1" longer are available and can be installed without fuss.

Did you Know? I sent a question to the Restorer Technical Editor. Here is the result:

Problem: Differential oil is getting on the brake linings. To replace the rear axle grease seals, can each axle housing be unbolted from the center section then following seal replacement, replace the housings with the same gasket thickness and not mess up the pre-loads on the gears?

Answer: You can do that. However I would not go to all that trouble just to replace the seals. The seals are grease seals, not oil seals. There is a misunderstanding that oil from the differential can get on the brakes if the seals are shot. Not true. The only purpose of the seals is to direct the grease that is pumped in at the grease fitting on the backing plate flange on the axle housing to the rear wheel bearing. If you hand pack the bearings you won't have to worry about them until the next brake job. As long as you do not overfill your differential, the seals serve no other purpose. PQ SUNSHINE CORNER

(Mostly Gossip) The group who traveled to Canyon De Chelly had a great trip. Folks got some extra exercise by pushing Pat James’ car each day since his starter quit. I’m told that Vic Padilla serenaded the folks each morning to start their day with a smile. Charlie V bragged a lot about his fuel mileage with air conditioning going full blast (in his modern car). Vic P was caught trying to bribe Charlie V, some-thing about an “overdrive.” Deane A was caught with his “A” along side the road. He was muttering about having a loose connection. Did he get reconnected yet? Joann F said she enjoyed getting wet on the Jeep ride up Canyon De Chelly. Mac somehow stayed dry. On the day the Club members left the Arizona Lodge, someone “dog napped” a brown dog from the parking lot. Folks are still looking for the culprit. Pat J, Al S, and Tom M were seen resurrecting a rebuilt Model A engine. They got dirty but did they get it going yet? ‘ Be careful, I’m watching you! The Sleuth
