3WISCONSIN WOMEN’S SOCCER 2019

KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER Wisconsin returns 10 starters from last year’s

team that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time under head coach Paula Wilkins.

The Badgers were picked to finish third in the Big Ten Conference behind defending champion Penn State and rival Rutgers.

Dani Rhodes paced the Badger offense last year with 10 goals and two assists in 21 games for the Cardinal and White. The senior was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection as she also led the team in shots on goal with 29.

Lauren Rice was clutch for the Badgers as four of her seven goals last year were game-winning efforts, including game-winners at Indiana and Minnesota.

Cameron Murtha scored six goals and logged a team-high five assists during her sophomore season for the Badgers. Her 17 points were the second-most on the team.

Jordyn Bloomer started all 22 games for UW in net and collected eight shutouts during her first season starting for Wisconsin. She had a 0.83 goals-against average and made 73 saves during the 2018 campaign.

UW returns a pair of players that look to make an impact on the pitch after missing time during the 2018 season. Sammy Kleedtke, a 2017 All-Big Ten Freshman Team honoree, played in 11 games last year while dealing with injuries while Allie Winterfield, a 2016 All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection, returns to UW after missing the entire 2018 campaign.

2018 SEASON IN REVIEW Wisconsin started off 2018 the only way it

knows how: with a win. The Badgers marched into Milwaukee, Wis. to face off against inter-state rival Marquette and left with a 2-0 victory. The following game Wisconsin dropped a tough 3-0 match to Florida State.

Following the loss to FSU, Wisconsin went on a five game winning streak, comprised of a road win at Kentucky, a road win at Washington, a neutral site win against Portland and back-to-back home victories over Illinois State and Loyola-Chicago. The Badgers posted one shut-out in that stretch and outscored opponents 10-4.

UW then opened up Big Ten play and tied Northwestern in the conference opener, 1-1, before snagging its first conference victory against Illinois, 1-0 in double overtime on a Dani Rhodes game-winner. Those two games added up to Wisconsin’s first seven-game unbeaten streak of the season.

UW then suffered a loss on the road at Michigan, it’s first since Aug. 23, before going on another seven-game unbeaten streak.

This streak started with a victory in East Lansing, Mich. against the Spartans, followed by back-to-back 0-0 draws against Rutgers and Maryland, both at home. Following the draws came four straight victories over conference opponents Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota and Nebraska. Wisconsin posted two shutouts in that four-game winning streak and four in the seven-game unbeaten streak.

UW’s streak ended in Columbus, with a 2-1 loss against the Buckeyes.

In the first round of the 2018 Tournament, Wisconsin shutout Memphis on the road in dominant fashion, scoring three goals. Maia Cella, Cameron Murtha and Dani Rhodes all found the back of the net on the way to UW’s victory.

The Badgers went on to earn a convincing 6-0 win over Hofstra in the round of 32 as Dani Rhodes scored a school-record four goals in the contest.

UW faced Stanford in the Sweet 16 and suf-fered a narrow 1-0 setback to the Cardinal in Palo Alto, California.

The Badgers’ 14 wins last year were tied for the 10th-most in program history

AGAINST THE CREAM OF THE CROP Wisconsin is eying its first-ever victory against

a No. 1 team in the country on Sunday after dropping their last five matches against the top-ranked team in the nation.

This marks the third-straight year UW has faced the No. 1 team in the country after dropping 1-0 contests to No. 1 South Carolina (2017) and No. 1 Stanford (2018) in NCAA tournament play. UW VS. The Badgers have a pair of wins against No. 3 teams in the country as UW defeated No. 3 Virginia and No. 3 Minnesota during the 2017 season.

SUMMER OF ROSE Former Wisconsin women’s soccer standout

Rose Lavelle became a household name this summer after helping the United States to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as she scored three goals, including the insurance goal in the USA’s 2-0 win over Netherlands in the final.

Lavelle scored a brace in the United States’ historic 13-0 win over Thailand in the opening game of the World Cup, which was her World Cup debut for the Red, White and Blue.

A native of Cincinnati, Lavelle has 10 goals in her 33 caps with the United States and news outlets from USA Today to Yahoo Sports have declared her the breakout star of this year’s World Cup.

Lavelle is currently playing her professional soc-cer with the NWSL’s Washington Spirit after becoming the first female athlete in program his-tory to be the No. 1 draft pick in a professional sports league.

A captain at Wisconsin, Lavelle scored 22 goals while adding 24 assists during her four years at Wisconsin and became the first player in confer-ence history to be named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year in consecutive years. She was a four-time first-team All-Big Ten performer for the Badgers and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2015.

LAST TIME OUT: UW 1, UCF 0 Dani Rhodes and Jordyn Bloomer each made

standout plays in the second half, leading the No. 16 Wisconsin women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win at UCF on Thursday at the UCF Track and Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half between the Badgers (1-0-0) and Golden Knights (0-1-0), Rhodes scored her fifth goal in three games in the 64th minute as she capitalized on a rebound off a Cammie Murtha shot and fired the ball low into the net to give UW a 1-0 lead.

Bloomer came up huge for the Badgers with 10 minutes remaining as the redshirt junior goalten-der stopped Mallory Olsson’s penalty kick down the middle to preserve the Wisconsin win.

“Anytime you can get a win on the road against a team like UCF, who does well in their confer-ence and has played in the NCAA tournament, is a step in the right direction,” Wilkins said. “I think tonight showed us some of the strengths that we have and some things we are going to need to work on before we play Florida State on Sunday. I’m proud that we were able to find a way to win tonight and that we were able to adjust our game plan on the fly thanks in part to our experienced players. Dani (Rhodes) getting the goal tonight with Cammie (Murtha) setting it up was a great example of that.”

Wisconsin improved to 26-8-5 in season-open-ing matches and the Badgers have won their last eight season-openers.

Bloomer matched a career high with six saves to earn her ninth career shutout.

With her 26th career goal, Rhodes is tied for seventh place in school history with H. Willihnganz (1993-96) and Jackie Billet (1992-95).

Rhodes, Murtha, Payton Wesley and Natalie Viggiano each had a shot on goal during the win.

Macy Monticello earned her first career start for the Badgers in her collegiate debut while fellow freshmen Isabelle Verdugo and Jenna Kiraly also made their Wisconsin debuts.

DANG, DANI With her goal against UCF on Thursday, senior

Dani Rhodes moved into a tie for seventh place for career goals with her 26th career tally. CAREER GOALS AT UW Name Goals Years

SCOUTING FSU The reigning national champion Seminoles are in

hunt of another championship appearance in 2019 Florida State has been in four out of the last twelve

WISCONSIN WOMEN’S SOCCER 2019

GAME 2: WISCONSIN AT FLORIDA STATE HEAD COACH PAULA WILKINS

HEAD COACH PAULA WILKINS 13TH SEASON

One of the most accomplished women’s college soccer head coaches in the country, Paula Wilkins is in her 13th season as head coach of the Wisconsin women’s soccer program in 2019.

With a pair of College Cup Semifinal appearances and 11 NCAA tournament berths, Wilkins has long been regarded as one of the game’s elite coaches. In 13 seasons at the helm in Madison, she has made great progress in rebuilding the culture and sustaining success with the women’s soccer program at Wisconsin.

Among Big Ten women’s soccer coaches with 10 or more years of experience, Wilkins ranks No. 1 all-time for winning percentage (.706). She ranks third in Big Ten history for career coaching wins (217). Wilkins also ranks second all-time in Big Ten history with a total of seven Big Ten titles, and that doesn’t even include her three Big Ten tournament titles.

Wilkins earned her 250th career win as a head coach in 2018 after leading Wisconsin to a 1-0 victory on the road against Big Ten opponent Purdue.

Building on a season in which they lost multiple starters, Rose Lavelle and started three freshmen, Wilkins led Wisconsin to a season full of surprises. An upset over No. 3 Virginia on the road was just one win in Wisconsin’s seven-game winning streak following a loss to Stanford. The Badgers also had a big upset win over Penn State late in the season to keep championship hopes alive. Upsetting Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, the Badgers then went on to lose to Northwestern 2-1 in overtime in the semifi-nals. After receiving a bid into the NCAA Tournament, an uncertainty before the season, Wisconsin knocked off Toledo in the first round 5-0. The Badgers then faced No. 1 seed South Carolina in Columbia and lost 1-0, ending Wilkins’ 11th season.

Aside from the success on the pitch, Wilkins helped led her three freshmen starters to All-Big Ten honors, Dani Rhodes was awarded Second Team All-Big Ten and, another diamond in the midfield, Victoria Pickett was recognized with First Team All-Big Ten honors at the end of 2017. Rhodes, freshman Sammy Kleedtke and Pickett all then went on to receive All-Region recognition. Rhodes and Pickett were given First Team Midwest All-Region and Kleedtke was third team.

The 2016 season saw the Badgers accumulate a 9-5-8 record, which included an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After defeating Marquette on their home field in the first round of action, Wisconsin nearly knocked off No. 9 Florida in the second round after an overtime battle. After start-ing the year 5-4-4, Wilkins guided the team to a seven-game unbeaten streak to close out the regular sea-son, including a win over No. 8 Minnesota in Minneapolis as well as a tie against ranked opponent, Michigan.

Wilkins’ work in establishing a winning culture at Wisconsin culminated in one of the program’s most remarkable seasons in 2015. Despite beginning the year 3-4-2 overall, Wilkins rallied the Badgers to a nine-game unbeaten streak. The remarkable run included a 1-0 victory at Maryland on Oct. 24, which clinched UW at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title—the program’s first since 1994. Wilkins was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career and became the second ever to win the award at Wisconsin, joining only Dean Duerst (1996). Under the mentorship of Wilkins, Rose Lavelle became the first NSCAA first-team All-American at Wisconsin since 1991 and the program’s first-ever Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. Victoria Pickett was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, just the second in UW history joining only Lavelle, both coached by Wilkins.

Under Wilkins, Wisconsin put together the winningest season in program history in 2014. The Badgers finished 19-3-2, winning the Big Ten tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tour-nament. Wilkins coached Rose Lavelle and Genevieve Richard to become the program’s first NSCAA All-Americans since 2000, while Richard also became just the second player in UW history to be named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. Cara Walls, Rose Lavelle and Kinley McNicoll joined Richard in earning First-Team All-Big Ten accolades, while Brianna Stelzer was Second Team All-Big Ten. Lavelle, McNicoll, Richard, Stelzer and Walls each earned All-Great Lakes Region recognition, as well.

Wilkins guided the Cardinal and White to a 10-win campaign in 2013, becoming just the second head coach in school history to earn double-digit victories in five consecutive seasons. A former All-American her-self, Wilkins helped acclimate her heralded rookie class to the college game, while also aiding Rose Lavelle in becoming Wisconsin’s first ever Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winner. Lavelle went on to become the 16th UW player to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors, the first since 2011.

In 2012, Wilkins guided Wisconsin an appearance in the NCAA tournament, the team’s third in the last four seasons, and eclipsed 10 wins for the fourth-straight year.

In 2011, the Badgers made their third-straight appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. Wilkins guided UW to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, the school’s best finish in 15 years, after reaching the third round of the NCAA tournament in just her third season with the program.

In her second season, UW finished with a 9-9-1 record finishing the season at .500, and narrowly missed a berth into the Big Ten Tournament. In her first season Wilkins led the Badgers to a 6-11-1 record, marking a three-game improvement overall and a one-game improvement in the Big Ten from 2007 to 2008.

Following the conclusion of her first season Wilkins scored one of the top recruiting classes for 2008, ranking 21st in the nation and marking the highest ranking in UW history. In her first recruiting class, two were named to the 2008 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, Laurie Nosbusch and Erin Jacobsen.

Prior to her start at Wisconsin, Wilkins was the head coach at Penn State for six years. The Nittany Lions earned six NCAA tournament berths, which included two College Cup appearances during her tenure. In addition, Penn State won the last six Big Ten regular season championships, along with a pair of Big Ten tour-nament titles.

A defender at the University of Massachusetts from 1991-94, Wilkins captained the 1993 squad that went 17-3-3 and reached the NCAA College Cup semifinals. When she led Penn State to the 2002 College Cup, she became the first person in NCAA history to both play and coach in the event. During her collegiate career, Wilkins scored seven goals and collected 18 assists and was named NSCAA first-team All-American and to the Soccer News All-America first team in 1993.

Wilkins earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from UMass in 1994 and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American. She later received her master’s degree in physiology from Penn State.

Wilkins, a native of Middletown, Pa., was an NSCAA youth All-American at Middletown Area High School. She also played on a national Olympic Development Program team.
