RESEARCH INTERESTS: Current research interests include cellular and molecular biology of cytokines as signalling molecules with a pivotal role in cell-cell interactions, mediator of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, allergic diseases and understanding their mechanism of action is providing novel strategies for use in the development of anti-inflammatory drugs. Polymorphism within cytokine, cytokine receptor, and receptor antagonist genes has been identified in a growing number of cases but in most instances, few if any systematic polymorphism studies have been reported. In my laboratory we are investigating the Cytokine Polymorphism and study the genomic variability that characterizes genes encoding certain cytokine molecules. The aim of these projects was to understand the role of Immunogenetic factors in human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) and hepatitis B virus infection. I worked as part of research group including Prof Ali Bazarbachi from the American University of Beirut to investigate the role of antiviral therapy in patients with adult T cell leukaemia (ATL).
